The Best Book On Public Speaking I have ever read!
Lenny's book is probably one of the bext books written on this topic. Lenny's clear writing style is like being in one of Lenny's seminars. When you read this book, it is like Lenny is speaking to you during one of his seminars. He makes it very easy to understand. What a wonderful book.

Worth looking at, understand what this book will help with
I picked up this book because I have a problem with conversations. I have difficulty talking to people if I don't know them very well. That's one problem, but the real reason I read this book was my other problem: thinking of things to say with people I do know. Larry King (the king of talking) addresses the first problem, but not the second. He gives tips and techniques about how to talk to strangers and how to speak in a business setting. This advice is valuable. There were tips that I found useful, but as a whole, this book did not address what I needed.

Fortunately, this was an interesting book to read as King gives examples and illustrations from his own life and career. He explains things clearly and if I would have been reading this to help me converse with strangers, there would have been more value in reading this book. If you are thinking about reading this book for being able to converse with strangers, I would give this book a try. If you are looking at it for my reason, skip it and try something else.

This is mostly a name-dropping kind of book.
This book is enternaining in places, but not particularly helpful in my opinion. Larry King is a master of the bold, rapid-fire question type of interview. In this book, though, he talks about celebrities like himself, with whom he is on first name terms. That's fine for him, but there's not much here that I can use.

Talking from experience
This book is not the ideal book to learn how to talk to people, but nervertheless it is a good book to read. Larry King in this book talks of his personal experience, how did he reach his current success, from a boy running around the studio working on any work got to current Larry King - one of the successful people of show business.

Back to the basics
Larry King knows how to talk, but that doesn't mean he knows how to teach. This is predictable stuff that only will help those who are in need of basic advice. Save your money and your time.

Not so good.
When buying this book, I thought I will master the skills of communication, after all who would be better than Larry King to teach me how to talk?

Unfortunately, I did not gain much of this book. Well I can't blame Larry for not letting out his secrets of communication, he is definitely aware that competitors will read it too!

Becoming a Great Speaker
I have been speaking professionally for 3 years. Prior to that, I spent years speaking in Toastmasters and other non-paid forums. I have read numerous books on public speaking, but by far my favorite is Lee Glickstein's Be Heard Now! The tape complement's the book very well.

Once you get beyond the nuts and bolts of public speaking, you are ready for learning the art of this craft. Lee Glickstein takes you to there. Although there are a few nuts and bolts (he gives what I think is the best formula for structuring a speech, especially how to make your opening remarks), most of the book goes to the subtleties of great speaking-building rapport with your audience. He also makes the profound observation that rapport comes more in the silence between spoken words than the words themselves. You can read the connection in the eyes of your audience. Lee Glickstein shows you how. Finally, he talks about the concept of "Speaking Circles" - similar to Toastmasters in some ways but with an even more of a supportive slant.

This book and tape can take you from being a good speaker to a great one.

Lose the fear of public speaking!

Did I listen to a different tape from the one that most listeners awarded five stars? I found it full of new age waffle that certainly wouldn't help me prepare a speech. I did find a few useful tips on tape 2, but it was a long time to wait!

Great help for turning fear into fuel for public speaking.

Good advice for beginning speakers...
As part of my Lotusphere preparation, I read the book 101 Secrets Of Highly Effective Speakers by Caryl Rae Krannich. As the title indicates, it's a series of short "secrets" (tips) on how to make effective presentations. The tips are broken up into categories such as Plan To Exceed Expectation, Build Your Body - Your Speech Body, Close With Power, and Prepare Like A Pro.

This isn't a "program" to help you overcome your fear. Instead, it's more like a buffett of ideas. Most of the ideas are common sense, and will strike you as "I know that already". If you've given presentations before, or if you're an experienced presenter, you might not take much away from the book. But if you're just starting out on the speaking trail, the information in the book will help you to focus your efforts.

Sensible advice for all
True to the title, Ms. Krannich outlines, in a sensible order, 101 eminently useful tidbits on public speaking. She covers everything from the speaker's posture to controlling anxiety to the actual environment of the room, giving fledgling speakers insights that might have taken years of trial and error otherwise. True, there are limitations in the user-friendly self-help style Ms. Krannich adopts. At times , things seem a little too overly simplified; at other times, she doesn't explain enough why the technique is useful. Most of the time though, she offers well reasoned common sense. Definitely useful.

Read This Book If You Are New To Public Speaking
Easy to read straight forward style. Author does not talk down to you like so many other public speaking books. Great tips on how to get started and how to improve in many, many ways. As you read each tip you know you are going to use it as the tip is so well reasoned. It would be an excellent first book on speaking. This is one of the most wisely organized books I have ever read. If you need to improve, you need this book
Not only is this a great book for professionals who do a lot of public speaking, but it is also great for those of us who only rarely have the opportunity to speak or give presentations.

The level of nervousness is much higher for those who do not consistently practice speaking, so they need a lot of practical advice that they can put into practice immediately, and they also need only that advice that has already been proven to work well. This book provides both.

I discovered this book before my last presentation and my delivery was immediately improved by using the practical tips Mr. jeary provided in the book. If you need to improve and you need it in a hurry, you need this book.

It was just the thing I needed. Why do I rate it outstanding? Because I have put many of Tony's ideas into practise, and they work!

Good
This is filled with good tips for speakers. As past president of Toastmasters in Monticello, I highly recommend this as a good review for polished speakers and a good introduction to the basics for beginning speakers.
I would have liked to know alittle bit more, however, how speakers can connect with different kinds of audiences..that could have been explored a little bit deeper.

Basic messages are be prepared and know your audience.

Offensive title, not enough on various formats
First off, I just HATE the use of the word "Dummies" in this highly successful series of books. Dummy carries such a negative connotation! I am using this book as one of my resources in putting together curriculum for teaching people with disabilities how to be more effective at speaking in public, which in turn empowers them by giving the disabled a voice to be heard by politicians, policy-makers, service providers and others. Some of the content in this book is good, but because of the title, I keep the book hidden in a drawer in my desk. I don't want my clients seeing the book and thinking that "dummies" applies to them! Also, the emphasis on the book has to do with giving a speech, though there is a small chapter dealing with panel discussions and other situations. People perform public speaking in a variety of formats besides the "typical" stand at a podium and give a speech. Speaking up at a 12-Step meeting, speaking from the audience during a public hearing, and speaking as part of an organized "protest" or other public advocacy format are just three examples. The book's value lies in four chapters that cover organizing your material, building the speech, getting off on the right foot, and how to wrap up a speech. There are some topics there that can be generalized to any speaking situation, and those are useful. But, by and large, this book has been a bit of a letdown. If you are giving a formal speech before an organization, this would probably be helpful. The tips for dealing with panel discussions are also helpful. But for anyone who wants to participate in other public speaking situations, this book falls a bit short. It's helpful, but not thorough -- and, again, the title is just downright offensive...

Helpful Guide to Public Speaking
I am new to this Public Speaking business! In my new position, I must make lots of presentations. Public Speaking for Dummies is a very helpful manual. Lots of good tips and suggestions. I also really liked the book called, Speech Communication Made Simple: A Multicultural Perspective. Both of these books have given me a lot of confidence when public speaking and have helped me to overcome much of my nervousness when speaking before groups.

From mediocre to DAZZLING
I have been giving speeches for the past 16 years, and am well acquainted with the ropes. I was looking for a book that wouldn't just tell me "how not to be nervous" etc., but a book that would sharpen my speeches and make me a more polished speaker. Well, that's exactly what happened. I took Malcolm's ideas and started incorporating them into all my talks, classes, and speeches. It seems that overnight, I was being complimented more and more, and I myself feel that my speeches have much more "pizzaz" - but not only. They also are more well-built, educational, and get my points across fast. Malcolm Kushner's book is also very humorous. Practical and Useful!
One of the most practical and helpful books I have read. I bought it on a whim because of the title. The author soon drew me into his topic and convinced me that if we have something worth saying, we must make sure that people hear it. Concise speach and writing helps that happen. As part of my job, I teach communication, especially public speaking and writing, to future missionaries. This book helped shape my teaching notes AND my delivery. I always recommend it to my trainees. None of them has ever been disappointed. Thank you, Milo O. Frank.

Milo O. Frank shows step-by step how you can improve your communications skills by using a 30-second message. While we all often gab for minutes or hours, you should be able to get your point across within 30 seconds. The rest is simply preparation or follow-through. A Required Skill In This Day and Age...
Basically, it's turning your message into a commerical since the average person can only hold their attention for 30 seconds thanks to (M)TV. It's useful in getting a message across to individuals who either don't want to talk to you or are too busy quicky. It can be seen as "brute honesty" if it's news the individual doen't like to hear, especially, regarding personal performance.Could be very useful in sales and retail. The book uses the 3 Ks (KKK). Unfortunately, it's not a good (PC) memory aid. I perfer the 3 Cs. "Catch Em", "Ceep Em", "Convince Em". I love the saying "Talking to many is the same as talking to one."
Worth a look at about 110 pages. You can finish it in one sitting.

Cheaper than college credits!
This book is excellent. It's written for the average Joe; no technical jargon -- it can and should be used by everyone. It's a short and sweet read...brief and to the point, it can be read in approximately 1-2 hours. I'm a radio announcer, and this book is one of the top 5 that I insist other people read ... but get your own copy! In my opinion "How to get your point across in 30 seconds or less" is equal to AT THE VERY LEAST one half semester of a college course in Public Speaking 101.... and it's much cheaper! This book should be required reading for everyone who opens their mouth in public.

Good content - annoying audio production
While the content of the book is excellent, the production of the audio version is annoying. The clock ticking throughout examples, cheezy music, use of various voice-overs split through left right and channels, and other unneccessary audio gimics are really distracting, and actually make it more difficult to follow the dialog. While this type of format has long been the norm in business and non fiction audio productions in the 70's and 80's, I would expect a less annoying and updated format for an item produced in 1999. You Don't Learn It From A Book (Or Tape)
A painfully shy friend let me listen to part of this, and it's not worth the tape it's recorded on. I was "painfully shy" until my 22nd year (oh, boo hoo hoo!), when I moved into a place of my own and, after awhile, realized that other people simply were not thinking about me as much as I thought they were. After I quit caring what others thought, I completely lost all shyness. Life is short, get out and have fun!

If you always worry about what others think of you, you would be astounded to realize how infrequently they DO think of you! Shyness is the result of your own inflated self-importance. You are NOT the center of the world, princess. Get over it.

Seems out of touch with the painfully shy
The book has a few tips for what to say in various situations. Maybe they would be useful (or at least good for a laugh) for a person who doesn't have shyness problems. But the book doesn't address anything at all about overcoming the problem of shyness. Shy people experience pain and sometimes even panic in social situations. Simply telling them to "have a positive attitude" doesn't solve the problem - we need to know how!

So I'm still looking for a good book on the subject.

Very bad
This audiobook was definitely a waste of time to listen to. Everything is commonsense, and not inspiring at all. Personally, I like books and tapes that pump you up, but in an intelligent way. This has none of that, and the ideas contained in this tape aren't worth spending your time on (ie. everybody already knows them, and it doesn't take a person with a university degree or PHD to explain them to you).

disappointing
I was eagerly looking forward to this book, but am very disappointed by it. I just received it today, and though admittedly I haven't had time to read it fully, I have skimmed the topics and several dozen pages, and I'm not even going to bother reading it. This book would seem to be useless to anyone but a yuppie business executive holding million-dollar meetings and having power lunches. And obtaining such a position would seem to me to require a reasonably outgoing, aggressive personality, not the painfully shy person to which this book is allegedly directed. Oh, there's also sections on how to meet with difficult clients, and how to become a master salesman. All topics of great interest to a painfully shy person (I'm being sarcastic, of course). If you want a book by this author, buy his other book, How to Start a Conversation and Make Friends. It's much better, and has lots of halfway amusing cartoons. Gabor has completely missed the mark with Talking With Confidence For the Painfully Shy. Avoid it.

Unrealistic and too brief
I agree that the situations and phrases described and prescribed in this book are tacky and unrealistic. Some of the advice would push someone further into their shyness shell because of the reactions they would get. Not recommended. Positively Poetic Prose
It is by far the best book ever written by someone named Peggy. Some say it's "I Teach Kindergarten" by Peggy Campbell-Rush, but they're wrong. There's no doubt, Peggy Noonan is the Peggy I'm talking about.

Her prose is positively poetic. Her stories about scribing speeches are spectacular. Her anecdotes are awesome, awe-inspiring, and amazing. After reading it, I just wanted to write. Write what you say? Not letters nor essays, no short stories, and definitely not novels; I just wanted to write speeches.

With this book, I obtained important insights and intriguing information about how to draft a speech (As you can see, Peggy informed me of the importance of alliteration). Maybe one day I will write a line as memorable as "Ask not what your country can do for you, but ask what you can do for your country," and I promise you that it is now possible because of Peggy Noonan.

Speaking to me
I loved reading this book - Ms. Noonan kept the momentum flowing. This is a very good introduction for people who are nervous about public speaking and/or speech writing. Ms. Noonan gives some insights and "how to's" about a person and/or topic. We must learn about what works for a person and what will not. Some of this is not earth shattering, however we can enhance our knowledge through her real life examples. Peggy points out that we should develop our own style, and we should avoid imitating other people's styles. Ms. Noonan also recommends that we use of humor in the right situations, never speak in a style above us, and avoid industry jargon.

I frequently give seminars for my company, and I am a president of a non-profit group. I found the ideas and suggestions extremely useful in enhancing my presentation skills.

There are a lot of Ronald Reagan examples/case studies, which I enjoyed because I am a huge Reagan fan. To me this was an added bonus.

I actually tried to rely on this book for a presentation...
I couldn't beleive how bad this book is. Not really a presentation on how to speak well, but full of recollections of her career-long speaking days. There was nothing useful in this book, except if you want to hear her reflections on talking her grades up with the professors in college back in the '60's. A complete waste of time and money.

Insightful and Well Written
What I loved best about Peggy's book is the delightful conversational style in which she writes which makes for an entertaining "how-to" read. I learned as much about people and history as I did about speech writing. Who says learning has to be dry or boring? A great book to expand a liberal arts education and improve your writing skills.

A good reference source
If you're a speech writer or a person who is often called upon to speak in public, you'll find this slim volume full of nice advice. I liked best the sections that featured passages from some of the memorable speeches Ms. Noonan has written for others. Maybe it's time for a collection of her writings from Time, the Wall Street Journal, as well as complete texts of her classic speeches? Publishers & editors should look into this. ... Read more

Semi-helpful
The first six chapters are helpful and contain useful information about the use of Language from the Center and from the Edge. However, the next two chapters are simply the author's social commentary about not pre-judging people on their differences in communication. The last chapter is just an overview of the study of linguistics.

An excellent book for consultants and salespeople
This book made a profound difference in the way I conduct my business. I was an "Edge" person to the extreme. I had always been taught that asking questions and constantly probing was the best and most powerful way to deal with clients and prospects. Not so! There's a time to stop asking and start "telling."
My clients want confident advice from me. They don't want to sit around and explore options forever. I do not understand some of the negative reviews of this book. I found it to be a great help.

DIDN'T HELP AT ALL
I really don't think that changing my voice mail will help me succeed in my corporation. The author talks about mixing two forms of language (Edge and Center) to have a perfect communication with the people you work with (employees, employers, boss, etc) and never tells you how to mix these concepts... and besides, if a certain form of language works for me, center or edge, I really don't see the point on changing the way I speak.I never close a book forever before finishing it but after reading a couple of pages after the middle of the book and realized that I could be reading something else so I decided to stop with the torture.

Not helpful
This book was full of everyday scenarios, which were interpreted in a very narrow way to show the author's point. The connections between the examples and her points were vague at best. The real problem with this book is that it would only appeal to those with very little self-confidence, and if that person took the advice to heart the result would be laughable.

Leadership is about language and communication. Sarah McGinty is an expert in the field of linguistics and her book offers us the opportunity to improve our patterns of speech to become a linguistic leader. She breaks down speech patterns into two basic modes of communication. These modes are referred to as "Language from the Center" and "Language from the Edge". The first of these conveys the pattern that is typically associated with leadership including knowledge, trust and authority. The later mode conveys responsiveness and collaboration.

"Language from the Center" is authoritative and tends to direct the flow of conversation. It makes statements, argues, and leads the listeners to where the speaker wants them to go. It also conveys competence, knowledge and a feeling of trust in the speaker by the nature of the confidence expressed. This mode also tends to use facts and strong analogies to make a point and demonstrate their expertise.

"Language from the Edge" is responsive rather than directive. It tends to ask questions, avoid argumentation and explore others' opinions. It explores, brings others into the conversation and seeks to gather information, to learn and listen instead of direct. In this mode objections may come in the form of a question rather than a bold statement. Some careers require this mode of communication including teachers, therapists, and counselors. In these professions communication is first gathered and secondarily is expressed with expertise when their opinion is needed.

The purpose of Power Talk goes far beyond the definition of these speech patterns. McGinty clearly shows how one can combine both modes into an effective unified communication style. By cross-training these linguistic modes a speaker is now able to immediately draw the positive aspects of both. The author believes that different situations require different communication styles and adapting the right language for the given situation will lead to greater success. The result is a linguistic toolbox referred to as power talk. However, this is not an easy task. It requires the speaker to examine himself or herself internally and discover how we sound to others. One must become aware of their own speech patterns and the speech patterns of others. Then by practice, sampling and observation the speaker can increase the effectiveness of their communication. Not Helpful For Me
Yes, the 7 steps can teach people in all types of careers and lifestyles to improve their oral communications skills but some of her methods are a bit "out there". For example: learning to focus on your voice as an instrument. The CD includes examples and anecdotes from Wilder's own work, and a number of exercises to help the reader implement the ideas set forth. If you're looking to overcome your fear of public speaking, join Toastmasters and skip this CD.

An effective program for overcoming your fears...
As part of my Lotusphere preparation, I've been reading 7 Steps To Fearless Speaking by Lilyan Wilder. She's a communication consultant who has coached a number of broadcast correspondents. In this book, she outlines seven steps to take in order to become a more effective public speaker. The seven steps are: Experience Your Voice; Get A Response And Structure Your Thoughts; Establish A Dialogue; Tap Your Creativity; Learn To Persuade; Achieve Your Higher Objective; and Give The Gift Of Your Conviction.

It's not a "short-cut" or "quick fix" book, in that she has exercises that you need to work through to get the most benefit from the program. However, if you're willing to work at it and follow the path she lays out, you will emerge as a more confident and composed speaker when you find yourself called upon to speak in front of a group.

I didnt even want to give it a half star.
A SNORE!!!! Geez this CD audio set was AWEFUL!! I literaly threw it in the trash as was too embarressed to give it away to anyone knowing I'd spent good money on it. Yes, I bought it or would NOT be able to comment here.
For a speaking aid, it had a huge political agenda to it that I DID NOT appreciate.
Some educational items/lessons are profound and stay with you all your life, there is nothing here that will stay except the VISA bill until you pay it off for this ripoff.
This old lady is a wash...find something current and revelant.

Bunch of useless tips for fearful speakers
I purchased this book expecting a book that would ease my anxiety of public speaking, and Ms Wilder certainly "claims" in her introduction that this book is to help you become less fearful, but the tips actually are for speakers who are ALREADY fearless but just need to improve their speech skills: For example: Get immediate response from audience. You know, the last thing I want to do in a presentation is further prolong it by asking what they think of it. My plain goal, Ms Wilder, is just to complete a mediocre if dull presentation WITHOUT anxiety, not get responses from my audience and so forth. I can hardly find any good books on stage fright. They either don't help at all or are off the subject.

This book will build your confidence in speaking.
I recommend this book as one of your first books to read on public speaking along with Simply Speaking by Peggy Noonan. 7 Steps is more complete and more like a text book to read. Wilder is a writer that uplifts you and encourages you rather than talking down to you like some other speach books by well known authors. Interestingly, the book begins and ends with your voice as an instrument of vocal production. Most other speech book writers don't address how to make your voice sound better. They take the: "Live with it approach." Great singers practice and practice on the sound itself. Why not speakers. May be they don't know any better or their publisher says: "too complicated." This author knows but does not overwhelm you. One speaking book was so hard to follow on vocal production I had to set it aside for a while. Wilder made the exercises so easy to follow that I was not overwhelmed. Most of the book is about developing a content filled speech and then how to deliver it. Not much here
I found precious little here. You might think that with the glowing reviews from famous people that this would be a useful book, but in fact the reviews aren't wrong - if you're a senator or a TV personality you'll find this book useful.

The rest of us can give it a miss.

Valenti may be a great speaker, but in terms of a book for everyone he offers little. You should remember your speech pretty much word for word. You should think of the cadence of how you'll deliver it. There really isn't much more, apart from long reminiscences about famous speeches and speakers. The book has a strange almost Victorian tone.

To misquote one of the reviews - this is a dispensible resource. Spend your money on one of the books that teaches you a lot.

A rare gem that stands out....
This outstanding book is a rare gem that stands out amongst so many books on public speaking. Jack Valenti knows his stuff and demonstrates with finesse the skills and techniques required for successful public speaking. Even the experts, like Barbara Walters, are taking tips from this prolific writer and respected public speaker. His stories and eloquent illustrations are vivid and memorable, drawing both from his personal experience and real life examples of top public figures.

Valenti was a speechwriter for US President Johnson and is currently president of the Motion Picture Association of America. What can you say for a book that former US President George H.W. Bush recommends as a must-read for those who take their case to the public. This book is a brilliant achievement indeed. Once you start reading, it is hard to put it down.

Valenti assures us with his words:
"Let us be clear: If you want to be able to rise before an audience, large or small, and speak to them so that they will listen to you, you can do it."

A valuable resource
As a former teacher, I think this book is an excellent resource for teaching a skill that is becoming a lost art. Whether your career routinely includes public speaking or not, people in every walk of life could benefit from the ability to organize thoughts and communicate better. And who better to teach confidence? To see him speak is to admire him.

Kind of disappointing
I ordered this book after listening to an interview of the author on cable. I guess I had excessive expectations. I've been in need of a pep talk, and have always wanted to improve my ability to persuade others. The idea that this author had coached many persuasive people was a selling point.

But I can't say I found anything for me in here. There's nothing wrong with the technical content - there just wasn't anything new. While helpful, it seems awfully basic - like stressing the importance of preparation, and practice. Whoopie.

And much of the unique content, IMO, is too heavy on the name-dropping. The excerpts from speeches of the-beautiful-people-I-have-helped felt much like padding. Uh-huh, I guess I should be impressed, but shouldn't these passages be more inspiring?

Certainly I'm picky in these days of economic duress - I spend my money much more carefully, since I have a lot less. But I really thought this might be a worthwhile investment, and I rather feel it came up short. ... Read more

Still nervous
I just started graduate school and thought this book might help me overcome nervousness during the many presentations I'll have to do. This book offers very general tips for many different speaking situations (business, tv interview, etc.)and just a couple of techniques for controlling nervousness. If you're looking for a book that focuses more on controlling nerves and less on what color to wear or the perfect lighting for your face then you really should look elsewhere.

Disappointing....
Perhaps my fear is a little too severe for this tape, but I did not find it at all useful. I was looking for a way to mitigate my physical symptoms and the author's suggestions/tips did not help in any way.

This book really works.
This is an excellent book for people who want to overcome their public speaking fears. Sarnoff teaches techniques that stop the nervousness that overcomes us before our presentations. Her book is also easy to read. ... Read more

don't bother
I bought this tape set to listen to in the car on the way to work. Unfortunately it was a big disappointment. I expected some professional help for a working professional but what I got was some childish play with bad ethnic voice imitations that would probably offend several ethnic groups. Some of the information seems to be outdated although the copyright is 1998. This tape set sounds more like a college freshman's attempt at getting a "C" in a writing class.
