A quick, enjoyable and incredibly utilitarian read. Trevis, a bonafide expert on sales from the other side of aisle, exposes some secrets that salesman use to coax unlikely buyers into spending more. He walks you through the process of being an expert negotiator even with the pushiest of salesman. Trevis preaches, be polite but firm and above all an educated buyer. Pretty much common sense. But Trevis masterfully puts it all together. Then he goes way beyond that to offer clever tactics for saying "no," advice on how to stoically manage your emotions during a bargaining session, and when to walk away. From the history of first telephone to computer telephony, from area code directory to list of system manufacturers' email address, it covers a wide range of topics and terminologies, some briefly and some in depth, that telecommunication managers should at least be familiar with.

However, it reads like an encyclopedia. from its title of "business telecom systems: a guide to choosing the best technologies and services", i expected to learn not only about telecom components but also how these components work together to make up a system and how that system maps to business processes. after all, most readers are not interested in the technology per se, but how the technology helps businesses.

The book is not meant to be read cover to cover. at the same time, it is not to be used as a reference. i also found a few HTML tags in the passages as if they were cut and pasted from a web site. all in all, the information is useful and bountiful. but i felt that those same information could have been better packaged and presented. ... Dr. Harry Hough's latest text is a quick and easy guide to learn and apply established purchasing techniques.

Purchasing Fundamentals for Today's Buyer is broad in scope and aimed primarily at the new and relatively inexperienced buyer. There are however new practices and procedures that can be adopted by even the most experienced supply chain professional.

Dr. Hough studied both economics and mechanical engineering and holds an MBA from the University of Chicago. He is the Founder and current President of the American Purchasing Society, as well as a full time author and consultant, having held senior positions in purchasing, given seminars and taught at several colleges. Hough authored a previous version of this text in 1992 with James Ashley.

The appendices are my favorite part and I feel the appendices alone are worth the price of the text. Many points are self-evident for experienced practitioners at the management level, but their implications from both an ethical and a strategic perspective are large.

I really enjoyed the approach of this text: simple yet effective.
