Book Description

The apparel and textile industries have always been at the mercy of rapidly changing styles and fickle customers who want the latest designs while they are still in fashion. The result for these businesses, often forced to forecast sales and order from suppliers with scant information about volatile demand, is a history of stock shortages, high inventories, and costly markdowns. But, as the authors explain in A Stitch in Time, technological advances in the 1980s paved the way for a new concept in retailing--lean retailing.

Pioneered by companies like WAL-MART, lean retailing has reshaped the way that products are ordered, virtually eliminating delays from distribution center to sales rack by drawing on sales data captured electronically at the checkout counter. Armed with up-to-the-minute data about colors, sizes, styles, and geographic sales, apparel and textile companies now must be able to respond rapidly to real-time orders efficiently based on new approaches to distribution; forecasting, planning and organizing production; managing supplier relations.A Stitch in Time shows that even in the face of burgeoning product proliferation, companies that successfully adapt to the world of lean retailing can reduce inventory risk, reduce costs, and increase profitability while improving their responsiveness to the ever-changing tastes of customers.Based on the success of these practices in the apparel industry, lean retailing practices are propagating through a growing number of consumer product industries.

A richly detailed and resonant account, A Stitch in Time brilliantly captures both the history and future of the retail-apparel-textile channel and offers bold insights on the changes and challenges facing retailers and manufacturers in all segments of our rapidly changing economy. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Informative
A Stitch In Time is a very good read.

While some academics tend to write books that are beyond the comprehension of mere mortals, this book is very readable, even to a layman like me who has no previous experience in the fashion/apparel/textiles business. The authors have explained techniques in manufacturing and theoretical concepts very clearly. Although it is obvious that much research has been done, the authors did not bore the reader with useless facts and figures just to prove the amount of research that has been done. Rather, significant findings were highlighted whenever appropriate, which made the book more interesting and comprehensible.

The authors believe that a new form of retailing, defined as lean retailing by the authors, will soon make its impact in the retail industry. Major retailers, like Wal-Mart, already practise this form of retailing. The theory of lean retailing propose that as there is an increase in product proliferation, and as customers demand quicker response times, retailers will "force" suppliers to replenish supplies at shorter intervals with smaller quantities. This will reduce inventory, cost and risk. While suppliers may choose to hold more inventories to satisfy lean retailers like Wal-Mart, it is a short-term solution. It is merely pushing the ineffectiveness of the system from retailers to apparel manufacturers. A better way is to re-look the industry from a channel angle, i.e. the whole chain of retailer-supplier-textile manufacturer. How can the channel be more effective as a whole? The authors believe information integration and co-operation is the key.

While the focus of the book has been on the fashion/apparel/textiles industry, I believe the concepts can also be applied to other industries. In fact, I believe the concepts were "borrowed" from more advanced industries like automobile manufacturing. Some of the concepts are similar to concepts in operations management like JIT, sales forecasting, etc.

I recommend this book to anyone in the retail business. This book will change your mindset of traditional retailing, whether you are in the fashion retail or not. I also recommend this book to people who are interested in exploiting IT for the exchanging of information between suppliers and retailers. I have learnt a lot from the book and I am sure many readers will agree with me.

4-0 out of 5 stars Review of A Stitch in Time
This is an extremely lively and readable account of changes in the U.S. apparel industry. It challenges the prevailing assumption that the industry is doomed to move offshore in its entirety. The authors argue persuasively that there will be a continuing need for apparel production in the U.S. by firms that cooperate more closely with retailers, and meet the demand for timely production. In addition, the authors present a fascinating history of the industry and a wonderfully detailed discussion of its changing technology. This book is useful to those interested specifically in the apparel industry, but also as a case study of how new information technologies are reshaping U.S. industries more generally.

5-0 out of 5 stars A welcome in-depth look at the effects of the IT revolution
The book goes beyond the hyped-up jargon of e-commerce and information technology and instead provides a nuts and bolts understanding of the actual impact of these trends on businesses, workers and the American economy. While it focuses on just one industry (one with which we can all identify, as consumers of clothing and customers of the Walmarts, J. Crews and Dillard's of the world), it gives a much broader understanding of the trends and forces that will eventually shape most industres, and affect who wins and loses in this emerging "IT" economy.

The book is eminently readable, packed with real world examples and crisp analysis of trends that we hear about frequently in the popular press, but rarely see investigated in any real detail. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Excellent overview - few details
An excellent overview of the current thinking of corporate retail loss prevention. This is an excellent primer for retail loss prevention as it is espoused by most large corporations. It gives few "in depth" details - this should not guide you in how to achieve this condition (if it does, you're just starting out or else you're in serious trouble). However, this gives an excellent introduction to the new loss prevention specialist. "Hands on" instruction should follow the reading of this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Too little coverage on Internal Theft
The coverage on Loss due to external factors is fair but not deep enough. So only suitable as a first reading for someone who is new to retailing. The coverage about Internal theft is far from satisfactory !!

5-0 out of 5 stars Los Prevention Made Easy
Positive Loss Prevention is a great way to introduce employees to the topic of Loss Prevention. It is clearly written and gives a very practical approach to training employees. Its extremely positive approach is a departure from the majority of books written on the subject. It takes the participant through fourteen quality chapters with the appropiate workbooks for them to complete. When they have completed the book the employee can obtain a certificate of accomplishment.I believe this book can be a great asset for the retailer and for emoployee training. Training employees is the key in adding to bottom line profit by reducing losses.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent ROI Potentials Here
Most retail loss prevention publications and material on the market today are directed specifically to retail executives, owner/operators, or associated loss prevention personnel. Mr. Tilley's recent book and entry to this market, however, has chosen to address two of the major components in the retailing shrinkage equation - shoplifting and employee theft - from a unique perspective. Mr. Tilley has put together a very comprehensive instructional primer, with a workbook review format at the end of each chapter, which is designed to be put directly into the hands of each and every front-line employee, in any retail operation. This book introduces the employee to the basic concepts of retail shrinkage and the cause and effect of everyday losses. More importantly, the book introduces the front-line employee to those simple, but invaluable, time-tested techniques, by which he or she can become an important and intrinsic part of the store's loss prevention program. Most of those loss prevention applications and situation solutions discussed in this primer have an added and common denominator benefit for the retailer - improved customer service.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, professional training guide for retailers.
Easy to read, easy to understand. The ideas are straightforward and easy to implement. Most retail companies have pieces of this information in their own handbooks. Now you can provide your people a complete training guide for less than $25. Your company will look more professional and your people will be better trained. The result is less theft and more competent staff. The real result is more satisfied customers. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Retail Detailed
In my years of selling I have taken sales courses and have read many sales management books. Most have spoken on things like features and benefits, or how to close the sale. Others have given me tips on scheduling my time. Merrill's book has brought to light an issue all sales people need to understand, that is, what is important to the buyer. Seldom does the average salesperson understand what it takes to be on the other side of the desk. This book has a great deal of insight into the analysis that a buyer goes through to maintain their assortment. My advice is to take this book and understand the process the buyer will be going through prior to making your next presentation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Informative, detailed and fun to read
This was so much fun to read. I've met Merrill Lehrer at a conference and his sense of humor is in this book. It's rare for the customer to tell us sales types how to be more effective, but that's just what he does here. Frankly, Merrill confirms many of my suspicions and revealed all kinds of things that have changed the way I approach my retail accounts.

I've been selling to major and minor retailers for over 20 years and didn't think that I could be taught too much more about the ways of the retailer. I now work for a consumer goods manufacturer, but I've been a manufacturers rep in a previous position too, and I've called on the Targets, Wal-Marts, and a bunch of smaller regional/local players. So I didn't think I could learn too much. Fortunately, this book went the distance for me and did offer some great guidance. I know that he aimed to put sales people into the retailer's head, and he does show you their point of view. I'm now using different language and approaching my customers differently and I can tell you that they've noticed it.

This is an easy read--I quickly ran through it on a road trip--and I recommend it to you. I'm surprised that a retailer would offer up all this advice, but I'm glad he did.

Business is very tough. This delightful book has helped me to communicate better, understand the retailers intracacies and I know it's given me an edge over my competition.

4-0 out of 5 stars Understanding Retail Buyers; July 29, 2002

5-0 out of 5 stars Selling to retail stores
For years, I've battled numerous superstore and chain store buyers, trying to get my stuff into their stores. Their logic totally defied me. Creating Stores on the Web fills an important gap in the current crop of e- commerce books, focusing on the general challenges facing would-be online sellers and providing resource pointers for the reader to clear each hurdle. This isn't a technical book but rather a pragmatic walk through all the issues you'll face when hanging your shingle out on the Web.

This book is great for anyone who is curious about how commerce on the Web works. It provides a rather comprehensive overview of each key topic, including business models, marketing, shipping, design, and payment processing. Most readers will be introduced to issues they hadn't even considered previously. The book is chock-full of pointers to real-world sites that either illustrate approaches or provide key services like marketing or payment processing.

Aside from the process of building your own Web store, the authors introduce you to the growing list of commercial sites that enable you to build a virtual presence with little or no upfront investment. Online auctions are also covered.

There are some screen shots, but the majority of the book comprises well-organized text, bulleted lists of options, and tips. Even readers unfamiliar with the Web will follow the discussion easily and get a good grasp on the state of the art of Web selling. --Stephen W. Plain

Topics covered: Online market overview, business models, Web success stories, store design, product stocking, promotion, international sales, payment processing, electronic software distribution (ESD), shipping, online auctions, and all-in-one store builders. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Map to Getting Your Store on the Web
I am using this book to get my online store up and running - it is an excellent map - showing me the way and steering me clear of the many pitfalls involved in opening an onine store (especially those involving credit cards). I wish there was more information and reviews of the checkout process (shopping cart services) as this is the part I am most confused about -how do I get a shopping cart on my site. There is some coverage of some services and I think there are even more services available now that weren't available when this book was printed. It would be great if the author wrote an updated version but as it is, it is pretty updated and aside from that one tiny complaint - the book is excellent and I highly recommend it. It's the best book out there today!

5-0 out of 5 stars A invaluable "how to" guide for online entrepreneurs.
The second edition of Creating Stores On The Web by Ben Swayer, et.al is even more valuable: it provides many basics on online selling options, from using Amazon zshops and Yahoo Store to setting up an individual site. An invaluable 'must', this answers questions ranging from accepting international payments and tracking shipping costs to accepting credit cards online.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a big help!
I am really interested in starting my own web store. After reading this book, I really feel like I can do it! This book covers everything and I would recommend it to anyone who wants to start an e-business but has no idea where to start!

5-0 out of 5 stars Creating Stores on the Web, Second Edition
If you are interested in finding information on the wide range of knowlege required to be a successful web store owner, this book is a great place to start.

This book is co-authored by a man who started a fledgling web-based business in 1993. Through his experience and successes you get all the tools you need to make informed decisions on your web design. You can go to his website and see that all the ideas he outlines for you in the book are in practice on his website.

I am a computer technician who is researching starting my own web based business to sell custom framed wedding invitations. I have read many books and articles in my research. I found this book and one other to be an incredible asset (101 Ways to Promote your Web Site). Both these books are written in "lay-mans" terms that any beginner would be able to understand.

A must have for anyone who wants to know where to start with creating their own web-based business.

Book Description

In this entertaining and informative book, Walter Friedman chronicles the remarkable metamorphosis of the American salesman from itinerant amateur to trained expert. From the mid-nineteenth century to the eve of World War II, the development of sales management transformed an economy populated by peddlers and canvassers to one driven by professional salesmen and executives.

From book agents flogging Ulysses S. Grant's memoirs to John H. Patterson's famous pyramid strategy at National Cash Register to the determined efforts by Ford and Chevrolet to craft surefire sales pitches for their dealers, selling evolved from an art to a science. "Salesmanship" as a term and a concept arose around the turn of the century, paralleling the new science of mass production. Managers assembled professional forces of neat responsible salesmen who were presented as hardworking pillars of society, no longer the butt of endless "traveling salesmen" jokes. People became prospects; their homes became territories. As an NCR representative said, the modern salesman "let the light of reason into dark places." The study of selling itself became an industry, producing academic disciplines devoted to marketing, consumer behavior, and industrial psychology. At Carnegie Mellon's Bureau of Salesmanship Research, Walter Dill Scott studied the characteristics of successful salesmen and ways to motivate consumers to buy.

Full of engaging portraits and illuminating insights, Birth of a Salesman is a singular contribution that offers a clear understanding of the transformation of salesmanship in modern America.

5-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining AND scholarly!
This is the first serious historical study of salesmanship that I know of, and it's terrific. Whether you're an academic, a college student, or someone who just likes history, this is the book for you. It intelligently and entertainingly charts the development of selling from 19th century bible and lightning rod hucksters to the 20th century professional, and discusses why this way of making a living continues to have a bad reputation (the author talks about how there was a post-WWII survey of mothers asking what they hoped their "sons" would grow up to be, and salesman always placed last!). The book is full of entertaining anectdotes and great illustrations-- it isn't often that a serious work of history is also humorous. This one is, and will also inform you about the changes in American society over the past 200 years. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars An expensive book, with pluses and minuses
I got some good ideas from the book, but I don't think they're worth either the $$ or the time it took to ferret them out. Now, I'm a life coach, not a financial advisor, so that may be part of the problem . . . BUT . . . Gregory refers readers to his tip-filled website and when you log on to it, there's no "there" there . . . no website, just the word that it will be coming along soon, and you can register to be kept up to date. He's also wedded to using the keyboard instead of a mouse, arguing that memorizing keyboard controls will cumulatively save you a lot of time. Again, maybe YES for financial advisors, but for a right-brained person, this is not helpful advice. So -- IMHO, the book is uneven. Browse at the library or a bookstore before buying.

5-0 out of 5 stars This one is amazing!
A MUST READ for anyone in sales, CRM or financial services. It's the kind of book that has you grabbing for your yellow highlighter within moments of picking it up. The resources the author brings us are simple and immediately effective...I put them to work right away.
Yes, it has a lot of info about putting computers to work for you but that doesn't mean you need a nerd certificate to use it. Most financial advisors hate being a slave to the computer. This makes your computer a slave to you.
It's full of WOW moments when all you can say is: I didn't know that!
A must read to make life easier!
Incredible sales tool.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Tips for Utilizing the Technology You Already Own
This is a must have resource for financial advisors and related professionals. Learn how to fully and effectively utilize the software and technology you already own to become a more efficient and profitable practitioner.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth every penny!
What a fantastic resource! As a non-techie, I found it eminently readable and comprehensible. Would love to hear one of his seminars in person.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Treasure Chest
I really couldn't believe my eyes when I first read this book. Page after page I found amzing new resources and terrific new ideas. I also discovered leads to find things I had been searching for and given up on.

As I read through and explored Kip Gregory's suggestions, the words "Treasure Trove" and "Treasure Chest" kept coming to mind. Nuggets of great information never stop appearing!

Anyone who works in the financial services industry will find special value here. In an industry that routinely spends thousands on marketing, often with disappointing results it's refreshing to see a marketing tool that provides value in the first chapter.

I say, forget about spending thousands and investing your time in marketing workshops. I know you'll get a lot more value out of a few sawbucks spent on this treasure chest of practical tools.

Let's face it. The computer and the internet are the most powerful marketing tools ever invented. This book shows you how to make them really work for you. Go ahead. Write me, feel free to SPAM me if I'm wrong. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Fun, Entertaining Book
Bought this book on a Tuesday night at 9:30PM, was done by midnight the following day (and I had to work that day). Hard to put down.

One of the advantages to jobs at the low-end of the labor pool is one comes in contact with such a broader spectrum of characters than in say, a corporate office. You end up with a lot of stories to tell. In this case, most of the characters are the hot dog vendors that the author must try to manage.

From vendors who warm their shoes and socks in the bun steamer to the author's own negotiating with loan sharks and pimps on behalf of his employees, this book recounts over 20 years spent hawking dogs in New Orleans' french quarter.

A very fun read.

3-0 out of 5 stars Slow start but fun
This fun book probably wouldn't have been written but for the fact that Lucky Dog hot dogs figured strongly in the classic New Orleans novel CONFEDERACY OF DUNCES. The author here is the company's long time manager. His subject, affectionately portrayed, are his vendors- drifters, mostly, few of whom, we're told, had driver's licenses while the ones who did couldn't be trusted not to run off with the company van.

For me, the book had a slow start. The author tends to report rather than narrate, summarizing conversations rather than recreating dialogue between people, allowing little of New Orleans' "voice" to come through. Also, although he includes many colorful anecdotes, it takes a while before he develops characters whose stories the reader could follow over the long haul.

There is a good sense of the community involved, though. Here a supervisor climbs through an efficiency apartment window to roust a tardy employee while street bums cheer below. When Strahan finally does let his community develop citizens with recognizable personalities and concerns, the book really takes off. Eventually, even the signature Lucky Dog carts seem like characters in the story.

Local color is understated. (Street life in D.C. sounded just as wild in Strahan's description as that in New Orleans.) Mardi Gras, for example, seemed mostly just another predictable busy period- same as major sporting events. Still, if if you've been to New Orleans it will bring back memories and if you're going, you'll notice things you wouldn't otherwise.

It also captures the French Quarter before it was cleaned up for the 1984 World's Fair and how that eccentric decadence still lingers somewhat. Especially amusing are the way the unflappable vendors resist the efforts of powers great and small to harass them. The best were the incidents involving World's Fair politics.

4-0 out of 5 stars Dahlin', Jerry is telling it for True.
I grew up in New Orleans and spent a lot of time in the Quarter eating "Lucky Dogs" aka Bourbon Street Steaks. The characters are not exaggerations. From the shake down cops, to the vendors from Mars, Jerry is tellin' it for true. A visit with these characters is a great way to pass a good time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Stellar!
Several books you have to read if you're interested in "Confederacy": "The Neon Bible," "Ignatius Rising," McCrae's "Bark of the Dogwood" (if Toole were still alive he might have written this), and this book, "Managing Ignatius."

You don't HAVE to have been from New Orleans to enjoy any of these books, but it helps. Long live Southern literature!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars "Ya didn't hav ta be there"
You didn't have to be there, however if you were, you'll know. Now, if you have ever been in the food service industry, regardless of the establishment, you will recognize these characters and know what it is to "manage" them. This is one of very few books that I read over and over again. I relish just opening it up and reading a few paragraphs. I was joyously
surprised with this gift of a book. It is fluid, fun and more factual then you may want to know! This IS New Orleans. I know. I was born, bread, and fried there. This may be a story for "our" eyes only. I can smell the streets and feel the night. The hot, sweaty, sticky nights, and sticky shoes. I can taste the bourbon from the bottom of the cart...I can feel their pain. This is a great read. Read it before you go there,
or read it on the bus home. Moreover, pass it along. This is a great afternoon read wherever you may be. This is a long story, with a long shelf life. Like my life, so far, it just goes on and on and on...... ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars I was not impressed
Folks use your common sence and save the 12 bucks on this one. This book would be good for any one under 16, but for even the
most sheltered adult this book will be a waste of your time. Good Luck

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Overview
This book provided a good overview for some one looking to get started in the retail business. I would caution readers that much of the information is directed more towards a retail business that will be located in a mall setting, not necessarily a stand-alone or downtown located specialty or boutique shop. With that in mind, it certainly provided good personal advice and insight.

2-0 out of 5 stars So you want to own the Store :
A general summary of how to start and run a store, almost common sense. Not very use full in terms of marketing and customer service. Based on an 'American' way of running a large size store instead of a boutique store.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-read for any aspiring retail entrepreneur
Mort Brown offers indispensable advice to people considering going into retail business for themselves. His conversational style and examples from his own experiences running a candy shop and a pet store offer the reader a behind-the-scenes look at what goes into the retail operation. From the daily interaction with customers, to the satisfaction that comes from being your own boss, Brown shares his wisdom on every topic related to running a profitable retail operation. If you're thinking about opening your own store, you'd be wise to read this book before you draft the first page of your business plan. One wonders how many retail failures might have been successes if only their proprietors had read Mort Brown's "So You Want To Own The Store" and taken his advice to heart. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A business book that is truly inspirational, real and funny!
You can do it is the attitude of this book! Rebecca Matthias writes of her experiences starting a business out of her home with the depth and flow of a favorite river. It is always flowing and never too deep that you loose interest or have to stop to figure out what she is saying. The author tells of her own experiences in colorful situations that make you laugh and at times feel the frustation and stress she went through while starting a family and building Mothers Work, Inc. into the biggest maternity apparel company in the world. I highly recommend this book to any woman looking to start her own business and could use the inspiration and/or blue prints. Each chapter recaps like a business book but it by far more enjoyable to read than any business book I can think of. I passed it on to a friend who enjoyed reading it too!

5-0 out of 5 stars A very inspiring book
The book is very inspiring and describes a real case study of a woman who done pretty well for herself and her business. For any woman that thinks about getting into business, it should be highly encouraging. I found it to be a great source of help and fun to read. In order to actually start establishing your own business, you might want to read additional books with more detailed explanation on the steps required to open the specific business you are thinking about. I must admit, I couldn't resist and read it twice.

3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting story of success
I found this book to be an enjoyable read, it was told from a personal perspective and was quite informative. It is very amazing how a little idea thought up by a new mom to be looking for a home based business blossomed into a giant public company with hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue. This book really isn't a "how-to" book, although it would certainly qualify as a "how-to" primer, enough information to get the reader thinking about how things work and developed.
The author was very open about some of the hardships and mistakes that were made along the way, and I found it interesting to hear someone that was ultimately very successful talk about the numerous time she almost quit or at least really wanted to quit, but some how found the courage to go on.
What I didn't like about the book was that she didn't give much of a voice to her husband. The fact of the matter is that her business, by her own admission, never would have made it to where it is today if it hadn't been for his support and contribution. This isn't something to be looked at as a negative, or anti-woman in any sense, but the truth is that in reality there was a partnership that made the business what it became, yet the book's cover and the over-all premise is that it was a "self made" woman story. I think the story would have been much better told if it had alternated between both the voices. In fact, the bottom line is that the business was a success because of the support and work of the entire family unit. This was talked about in the book, but seemingly down played in the cover, jacket and over all scope.
I recommend this book to any that are interested in business success stories, men or women, it is very inspirational and it was fun to read too.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very good read!
I checked this book out of the library. I found it in the section on starting businesses and it looked interesting. I started reading it last night and finished it this morning. I really enjoyed reading it.

The author is very open about her mistakes and how she learned from them. I think the book has valuable information for those who are considering starting their own businesses. I did not agree with everything she said, and I would not choose her lifestyle. But she provided me with a picture of what life is like for a woman trying to build a large, profitable business. I have more modest goals and different priorities. I highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars The personal journey of a business woman
I took this book with me on a recent business trip to Chicago and had to force myself to stop reading it at a reasonable hour the first night so I could get some sleep. This book is not a how-to start a business and take it public kind of book, but rather a look at the woman who ended up doing precisely that and what it meant to her personally.
It's interesting to read the other reviews, because obviously some readers wanted Rebecca to say that she had done it all on her own without any support from her family, or that she managed to create a multi-million dollar business, have a family, AND have time for hobbies, friends, and handicrafts. But the fact that Rebecca's husband and parents worked beside her doesn't detract from her achievement in my eyes. Nor was I surprised that she only has room in her life for immediate family and her business. As I consider whether and how much I want to grow my company, I look at her life and realize that I'm not as ambitious as she is. Yet I admire what she has done, and really admire her bravery as she bares herself in this revealing autobiography of her working years.
Anyone who wants an honest inside look at what it takes in terms of commitment, hard work, and the ability to recover from mistakes and the inevitable setbacks along the way will enjoy reading Motherswork. Bravo to Rebecca for sharing her story with the rest of us. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Paris Bible
Would never sell this book! Would never loan this book! But you can come to my house and look at it. Every bit of information (and there is a lot) is absolutely accurate!
My friend Joann and I had planned two weeks in Paris, just for Flea Markets, when my "brilliant" friend Annie in California sent me this book. I can't image my "hunt" without it. It made preparing for the trip a blast and the actual running around a breeze. Thank you Sandy. I would buy anything that you wrote. To the rest of you: Don't even think about it. Just buy the book and hop on a plane. Take along Sandy's advice and extra suitcases!

5-0 out of 5 stars Road Tested the Section on Paris!
Thank you, Sandy, for this great book! Just returned from Paris where 3 other antique dealers and I visited all the markets listed for Paris that were available in November. The information was accurate and honest and the directions very complete. This is a great time saver for serious shoppers like we are and enabled us to maximize our limited time in Paris. We plan to use the other sections of the book on a future trip (soon we hope!) and recommend it to others we discover that are planning a shopping trip in France. Well worth the modest price!

5-0 out of 5 stars exploring the flea markets of france
I roadtested this book on a recent trip to Provence and it was just what I needed. Not only did it tell me about the markets and their wares, but it also directed me to the best meal of my trip. The other big plus was useful French phrases for transactions with vendors who had little English.

5-0 out of 5 stars Warm, colourful ramble through French flea markets
This is an engaging, knowledgeable book that vividly conveys the sights and sounds of French flea markets and their remarkable history. The author knows her stuff, and her love for the colours and textures of their wares is infectious. Price's prose style is friendly and authoritative, with a sly sense of humour. I found it a great read for anyone who likes France, but it's a must for the flea market enthusiast.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is absolutely fabulous!
Exploring the Flea Markets of France is a witty, informative book which makes you want to hop on a plane to France, put on your comfortable shoes and start searching for flea market treasures. Never dry or boring, and often funny (would you like to buy a bucket of dead fish?), this book is full of useful tips for both experienced and aspiring flea market shoppers. Whether you are actually planning a trip to France or are simply an armchair traveller, you must read Ms Price's book (you won't believe she is a lawyer). ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Dennis Price will Make a Winner out of You!
This book is for anyone who wants to be a casual ebay participant, or for hard core buyers and sellers. There is detailed information for both beginners and seasoned users to aid in the online auction experience. Dennis makes this book easy to read, with simplified explanations and a great sense of humor.

All of your feelings of fear, ignorance and being overwhelmed with the auction process online will be put to rest after reading this book. No stone goes unturned.

The price is a bargain. I have read other online auction books which were a waste of time and money...however, there is not one individual who will not be pleasantly surprised and satisfied by "Online Auctions at eBay".

I have just completed my first auction at eBay after reading this book....Results: I was the high bidder out of 170 bids. I WON!!!

Need I say more.

4-0 out of 5 stars This is Great Book for the Novice at eBay
"Online Auctions at eBay, Bid with Confidence, Sell with Success" is a big book (in both meanings). Mr. Dennis L. Prince makes it enjoyable and easy to understand. This is the book with smooth writing style and a lot of the author's own experience. The book is really well written, with a valuable how-to-do it information, simplified explanations, and a good sense of humor. But, as I see, that would be a valuable reference mostly for beginners. If you are new to eBay, then this is a must-have. This book is for anyone who wants to become a casual eBay participant, both for buyers and sellers.

This book is an excellent companion not for the eBay buyers and sellers only, but also for a thorough education about others online auction sites. After finishing this book I use obtained knowledge in my bids at other online auctions, for example, at the best Russian online auction Molotok.ru. And now I know some people in Moscow who are making business through online auctions. But I think people can figure it out without the use of any book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Words, words, words.
This book takes nearly 500 pages to say what I think needs less than 100 pages.

Padding is a serious problem with many books.

4-0 out of 5 stars I'm done!
I'm already done Christmas shopping. Like that guy in the commercials. All accomplished within the warm, cozy, friendly confines of home! This is especially excellent when one lives in the Tundra and has obviated the need for shopping forays over the frozen river and through the woods to the mall. Through ice and snow. Barefoot. Uphill both ways, coming and going.

Some information in this book is outdated and you would do better to go through eBay's on-line tutorial and Newbie BB. Still, this book has very helpful additional info. Like its subtitle says: "Bid with confidence, Sell with success." In the beginning of the book, there was (to me, at least,) way too boring text on how to buy or borrow hardware and software to connect one's self to the Internet so as to avail one's self of eBay. You can take a nap or skip that if you're already here and reading this.

So far in my preliminary shopping saga, I have shed the Cheap Sunglasses (which serve to caution other eBayers encountering one so identified: "Newbie alert! Newbie alert! This eBayer has yet to establish recognition!") Mr. Prince's book is helpful and humorous - who wants to read a dry old text, anyway? And even if, like me, you are not a Seller, the "how-to's" for Sellers here help a Buyer understand some of the "tricks of the trade" some Sellers, or even competing Buyers, may use on the unwary. And there's a section on that insidious, ubiquitous Sniping. Yikes! Forewarned is forearmed, and Prince's book gives you what you need for the Battle. Bid on! Reviewed by TundraVision
