The world is in the midst of an industrial and economic revolution more far-reaching than the one that transformed Europe and North America in the 19th century. According to William Greider, this revolution is a juggernaut that neither multinational corporations nor governments can control. Greider looks at the impact of the global revolution in terms of human struggle. While huge amounts of wealth are being generated, there is a downside, too: social dislocation; economic uncertainty; and the oldest, rawest form of exploitation--that of the weak by the strong. Greider proposes a number of steps governments of the world can take to avert disaster: moderate the flow of goods by imposing tariffs to rectify trade deficits, change labor practices in developing countries, and allow labor to share in the ownership of capital. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Globalism at its worst
The negative reviewers and neocons would like to have you believe that everything is hunky dory thanks to globalism when in fact none of it is the case. There is good globalism where there broad prosperity for all and then there is unchecked globalism aka unchecked capitalism aka corporatism aka FASCISM where only the corporate dictators are prosperous. The reality, as Greider continuously hammers in this book, is that with the worst form of slavery and racism on the planet thanks to outsourcing and wars for profit, everyone including the U.S. is a LOSER in this worst form of global capitalism. I live in Utah and I got 20 hardcore conservatives interested in this book after I introduced it to them and now they're rethinking the current globalism that is killing mankind. For this reason alone, I strongly recommend this book. Don't just take back America. Take back democracy before it's too late past the point of no return !

5-0 out of 5 stars Read this book and help take back America
Want to defeat one-sided governments like ours? Then read this book and fight back the politically inconsistent.

3-0 out of 5 stars Ready Or Not, It Won't Work.
A writer of note on various subjects from 'Rolling Stone', not exactly known for its intellectual content, he predicts that "one world" will leave no place to hide because the rain forests are shrinking as is.Without trees, pollution becomes more toxic.Recently, the U.S. courthouse here cut down 48 trees "for security" directly at the location where the city buses congregate and leave the motors running. This town is already so polluted, many of the residents have developed serious allergies.

When a nation becomes industrialized, the toxic refuse is dumped into the rivers and ocean.Where to ship the toxic wastes is a revolving problem. We are but thirty miles from Oak Ridge where they have nuclear waste products, constantly at our peril and on the roads to Utah or wherever.China and other places which are now making America's products will be choking on the polluted atmosphere.Perhaps they could ship it "down under" to Australia!Or to the remote areas of Russia? One World (ten years ago) is becoming a time bomb.

America has suffered economically by this global capitalism because Walmart (here it is called WallyWorld) and their cheap prices forced the U. S. to stop manufacturing and let China, India, Sri Lanka, and other cheap labor markets make inferior products. We used to have pride in our U.S. made appliances and clothing. Now, you have to search far and wide and still unsuccessfully for native-made, first quality merchandise.Even our foods are from other countries, store brands in particular, which could be contaminated.

This possible catastrophe is to offer lower income customers cheap prices. What we need to remember is "You get what you pay for."If you're happy with inferior products or possibly dangerous food items, you're taking chances.Today, instead of having an appliance repaired, it is cheaper to just buy a new one.The foreign made things have a short life span.

Big money hides itself in the global economy using tax havens.Social Security is in peril because the U. S. Government gives tax credits to the wealthy land developers who destroy the environment, causing more pollution. It's a shame.

1-0 out of 5 stars His conclusions drive the narrative
?The Storm Upon Us ? everything seems new and strange ? nothing seems certain ? masses of people are tangibly deprived of their claims to self-sufficiency ? this revolution is steadily creating the predicate for its own collapse ? the prospect of an economic or political cataclysm of unknown dimension ? .? These and similar claims are found on just the first two pages of the book. To be fair, Mr. Greider also references the ?great fortunes? thrown off by globalization and the fact that millions escape poverty, but right from the start you get the feeling that he is working backwards from his conclusions and choosing his rhetoric and his examples to sell his point of view. It?s almost as if Mr. Greider is suggesting that, now that the West has gone through the very sort of radical transformation he describes with shock and dismay, the rest of humanity should just stay where they are at while we in the industrialized world figure out if and how they should reach for the security and the lifestyle that we take for granted. If you are looking to validate an anti-globalization bias you already hold then this may be the book for you, but I think it?s fair to say that most readers would like to benefit from Mr. Greider?s considerable experience and expertise without having to interpret his selective or overly cynical presentation. In a nutshell, my problem with the book is not that it argues against globalization and is wrong, but that it is as committed to persuasion as it is to education. I chose not to finish the book and will look for a more neutral resource.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Close Look At Globalism
I've been meaning to write about One World, Ready Or Not (1997) by William Greider for some time since I finished reading it a few weeks ago, but it is a difficult book to describe in detail given it's scope and content. I first encountered Greider in the pages of Rolling Stone magazine where he writes about politics and economics and was impressed by his intelligence and rational thinking. Needless to say, he is somewhat liberal and progressive. This book is an excellent look at globalism, especially how economic systems and policies affect the world. Some of these sections are bit difficult to follow, but I found his case studies of different companies and labor movements quite fascinating, especially the section about the airplane industry and Boeing in particular. He explained how Boeing parcels out parts contracts to countries that order airplanes as a sort of kickback for countries doing business with them.

The section about the negative impact of free trade zones on the poor people who work in them is very telling. (For a more comprehensive look at the exploitation of third world workers see Naomi Klein's excellent No Logo, which is a good companion text to this). It is something that has troubled me since I saw a large group of peasant girls lining up at the gates of a textile factory in Cambodia, they looked like they were twelve, it was very Dickensian. The fact that they make around $20 a month for shoes that cost over $100, is absurd to me. I'd like to present some of the suggestions he has for reforming the global economic system, which has been spiraling out of control. All of them seem quite reasonable to me.

1. Tax capital instead of labor.

2. Reform the terms of trade to ensue more balanced flows of commerce, compelling export nations to become larger consumers of the global production.

3. Bring the bottom up-raising wages on the low end as rapidly as possible-by requiring trading nations to honor labor rights.

4. Forgive the debtor-that is, initiate a general write-off of bad debts accumulated by poorer nations.

5. Reform the objectives of central banks so they will support a pro- growth regime instead of thwarting it.

6. Refocus national economic agendas on the priority of work and wages rather than trade or multinational competitiveness, as the defining issue for domestic prosperity.

As Greider mentions, none of the propositions I have suggested is especially radical or even new in historical terms, since they all have been actively employed at one time or another. Nonetheless, I don't really expect to see any of these reforms adopted given the fact that there's no real economic motivation to do so. The problem as Greider states it, is that there is no governing body with the best interests of workers overseeing economic policies. As a result the gap between the haves and have-nots will continue to extend. All in all, a very thought provoking look at global economics. ... Read more

Book Description

Hands-on investment strategies for facing the new financial realities of retirement

". . . every conceivable facet of retirement planning and the adviser-client relationship is dealt with in a manner that is methodical yet entertaining."--William J. Bernstein, M.D., Ph.D., principal, Efficient Frontier Advisors, and author of The Intelligent Asset Allocator

Today's burgeoning class of retirees is discovering that financial needs--not to mention investment guidelines--change significantly after retirement. Retire Sooner, Retire Richer addresses the very real concerns of not only planning for retirement but also where to invest assets both prior to and during retirement. Frank L. Netti helps to answer important concerns on these matters, including:

  • Is a financial planner necessary?
  • How can I design an effective, personal pension plan?
  • How can I be certain that my savings will last my lifetime?
  • What kinds of insurance options do I have?

Using the four keys to financial preparedness, Retire Sooner, Retire Richer shows readers how to make the most of their investments for the long term.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential Advice for a Person Who Wants to Retire Early
If you make a mistake with your retirement planning, chances are you will have to live with that mistake for the remainder of your life . . . and wish you had been more careful. Retire Sooner, Retire Richer will help you avoid the bulk of the mistakes that trip up the majority of people. The book is written in a common sense way that can be understood by almost anyone.

A portion of the author's income from the book will go towards low-income workers and their families affected by September 11, 2001, and to charities serving the hungry and homeless, such as Greater New York Labor-Religion Coalition, Second Harvest (USA), Catholic Relief Services (outside the U.S.), and Habitat for Humanity International.

When I first learned about Retire Sooner, Retire Richer, I was skeptical that it could add anything to my knowledge of investments, tax law, estate planning and how to get practical advice. As a result of reading the book, I was pleasantly surprised to learn a great deal of valuable information that I did not know before. After having assessed that information, it made me realize that anyone who works for a company, wants to retire early and desires to leave an estate behind needs a great deal of help. I strongly encourage anyone who is within 10 years of retirement to read this book!

The book opens with one of the best explanations I have ever seen about why volatility in financial instruments means that you have to be very conservative in planning your retirement investments and even more conservative in withdrawing from your retirement savings. Otherwise, you don't save enough and a down market can cause you to wipe out your savings at a time when stock prices are low. This really hit home after seeing the stock market drop for three straight years until 2003. The suggested guidelines in both areas made a lot of sense to me.

Next, Mr. Netti described many ways that you can choose to reduce the current and future taxes to be paid on your income and savings. Most of these choices are only available to you well before you retire. So if you wait until the day before retirement, you will lose many valuable tax reductions. In addition, if you die before your planned retirement date, failure to use these choices will cost your heirs quite a lot!

From reading the text, I began to appreciate that the tax laws governing pension payouts and IRAs have gotten to be very complex. Only someone who follows these details on a daily basis and works with them all of the time can hope to appreciate and take advantage of all the nuances if you want to retire early. From this, I began to see (for the first time) why the advice from a well-schooled financial advisor can pay a vast multiple of the cost of such an advisor. Mr. Netti certainly seems to be such an advisor.

He goes on to give you a process to locate the right financial advisor for you. The process seems like a good one, although I have never personally looked for a financial advisor. Reading Retire Sooner, Retire Richer will also prepare you to get more benefit from working with an advisor.

If you are totally averse to ever working with a financial advisor, this book may change your mind. Reading the book struck me as being a lot like what you might discuss with a financial advisor. I was grateful for the chance to have this dry run on the experience.

Here's the outline of the book:

Part One: Understanding Your Retirement Investments

Chapter 1: The Numbers Game and Retirement Timing
Chapter 2: Factors to Consider When Transitioning to Retirement
Chapter 3: Why Some Retirement Plans Fail and Others Succeed
Chapter 4: How to Improve Your Money-Management Decisions

Part Two: Building the Wealth You Need

Chapter 5: Portfolio Lessons for a Lifetime
Chapter 6: Why You Need to Act Now to Live Happily in Retirement
Chapter 7: How to Make the Best Use of Your Retirement Distribution Options
Chapter 8: How You Can Provide Added Income for You and Your Heirs
Chapter 9: How to Use a Rollover IRA to Leave More to Your Heirs

Part Three: Managing Your Nest Egg

Chapter 10: The Advisor Advantage
Chapter 11: Creating a Financial Planning Review
Chapter 12: The Importance of a Personal Investment Policy
Chapter 13: How to Pay for Financial Management Advice

As I finished the book, I found myself thinking about where else in my life I might benefit from skilled advice . . . and have not been seeking it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Don't let the title fool you
While I found this book useful, I thought the title was kind of misleading. There is really nothing specifically addressing retiring young. In fact, the book will more likely scare you into working to 65+. Also, I sometimes felt like I was reading propoganda material for the financial analyst/management industry. What I walked away with was - work as long as you can stand it then hire as many people as you can afford to help you manage your retirement pot. Granted, not bad advice.

Lastly, just FYI, the book is geared solely to traditional families. Unmarried partners wanting specific advice should look elsewhere. I found this to be kind of surprising for a book published in 2003.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book for those planning to retire!!
I have worked in the investment business for over 7 years and I have been involved in retirement planning. Too many people have found that investing for retirement has become complex. Mr Netti's book helped me to understand (in easy to understand language) how my plans can be affected by many variables, ie., investment returns, withdrawal rates, longevity, etc. Also, it is important to me to find the right advisors to help me choose and monitor those investments. There are many advisors out there and this book enabled me to determine what type of advisor I need, where to look, how to hire and pay for advice. It will save much time and money as I plan to retire. Since there are no competency or ethical standards regulated under the banking, insurance or securites laws, a book like "Retire Sooner, Retire Richer" helped me to find the right person for me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Many Praises
"Frank Netti has taken into consideration the many aspects of retirement. In plain English, he has conscisely and forthrightly written a book that makes a must read for current as well as future retirees."
David Elias, principal of Elias Asset Management

"Frank Netti's book is a wake-up call. To his credit he doesn't downplay the compexities of planning and living a decent retirement in contemporay America. Instead he makes complexity eminently readable. This wise, honest, and instuctive book makes a loud case for finding and partnering with a professional advisor."
Barbara Levin, Director, Fourm for Investor Advice

"In his book, Retire Sooner, Retire Richer, Frank Netti offers 23 investment proverbs to guide the reader in planning a secure retirement. These are the 23 best tips to enjoying your retirement years, and his book offers countless more insights to sound money management. Read this book and take heed, without careful planning, there's trouble ahead."
Christopher L. Davis, Executive Director, Money Management Institute

5-0 out of 5 stars Must read for everyone!
Netti's book is insightful and a must have for those concerned about having enough resources to retire - which should include everyone. It is never too soon to plan for retirement. Gone are the days of "irrational exhuberance". Netti shows us that only with careful planning and the right steps can we face retirement with confidence. Better yet - it is not just advice but the tools to get there! ... Read more

It is so easy to believe that retirement is way out or reach, yet as women especially, we need to plan ahead. 5-0 out of 5 stars Blurb
Understanding the historical development of pensions is critical to the future of retirement systems around the world. This volume offers a comprehensive assessment of the political and financial dimensions of public sector pensions from the colonial period until the emergence of modern retirement plans in the twentieth century. The authors emphasize how retirement plans can help achieve human resource objectives, how public sector pension policy has sometimes been influenced by other government objectives, and how early pension plans were funded.

After discussing the economics of retirement plans, the authors review the history of European retirement plans, beginning with their use in the Roman Empire, and then moves on to early American pension systems. They explore the development and management of U.S. army and navy pension plans during the nineteenth century, drawing on original records of participants, retirees, and plan finances. They document the struggle to establish a federal civil service retirement system and trace the growth of state and local retirement plans. This history is inextricably linked to broader developments in U.S. financial markets, offering rich insights into political debates, including current debates surrounding plan design and plan funding.

This book is of significant interest to financial market and pension experts, labor and corporate pension sponsors, policymakers, public sector plan participants, and others who want to know how and why pensions emerged. Robert L. Clark is Professor of Economics and Professor of Business Management, North Carolina State University, and coeditor of the volume To Retire or Not? Retirement Policy and Practice in Higher Education, also available in the series from the University of Pennsylvania Press. Lee A. Craig is Professor of Economics, North Carolina State University. with all the IDIOTS guides easy to read format, this book provides an in depth look at 401K issues that may have otherwise been much drier if not done in this fun format. when i finished thebook, i lent it to my staff, who are first time 401K investors. i would say that this is a must buy for anyone who feels they are intimidated with 'what to do?' or 'what does this mean?' type of questions. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Timely insights
When you reach your mid-fourties you tend to think you've sorted out finances. On a lay-over in Chicago I started flipping through the copy of Complete Idiot's Guide to personal finance that a friend had loaned me. I quickly started to realize that there were a number of key areas regarding personal debt load where I'd not paid enough attention. The timely insights regarding the danger of excessive credit card balances made me realize that my dream of a nice cabin by a lake would have to wait. Much thanks to Sarah Young and Susan Shelly for this easy to understand guide.

As a father of two college bound children I need to plan for their future as well as my own and my wife's. Regardless of daily social security and tax law changes I needed a starting place to begin to learn about retirement, investment and tax planning. With this book, I was not disappointed. 5-0 out of 5 stars A great gift for parents or grandparents
When my father retired from a long term corporate career he had many questions about stock options, his pensions, his 401k rollover, taxes, social security, medical plans and how to leave a legacy to his family. This book was an easy to read, easy to understand reference book to help him find the answers to his many questions. He may seek more professional financial planning advice, but this book was what he needed to get him started on the right path. I highly recommend it as a gift for anyone in retirement or pre-retirement. ... Read more
