Book Description

The growth of regional trading blocs is now a major feature of international relations. Regional Integration and Development examines regionalism from the viewpoint of developing countries and provides a comprehensive account of existing economic theory and empirical results. In a thorough analysis of the politics and dynamics of regionalism, the book considers the relationship between regionalism and multilateralism and explores the economic advantages of nondiscriminatory trade liberalization, which the authors argue should be exploited to the maximum extent. Designed as a practical guide for policymakers whose countries are considering membership in a trade bloc, this book will also be of interest to scholars and students of international trade. ... Book Description

The inclusion of the New World in the international economy, among the most important events in modern history, was based on slavery. Europeans brought at least eight million black men, women and children out of Africa to the Western Hemisphere between the sixteenth and nineteenth centuries, and slavery transformed the Atlantic into a complex trading area. This trade united North and South America, Europe, and Africa through the movement of peoples, goods and services, credit and capital. The essays in this book place slavery in the mainstream of modern history. They describe the transfer of slavery from the Old World, its role in forging the interdependence of the economies bordering the Atlantic, its effect on the empires of Portugal, the Netherlands, France, and Great Britain, and its impact on Africa. ... Suitable for the IT manager or developer who wants to get the"big picture" surrounding mobile commerce (m-commerce) of the presentand near future, Paul May's Mobile Commerce: Opportunities,Applications, and Technologies of Wireless Business provides asmart, business-savvy guide to what's on the horizon with the wirelessWeb.

This book provides a good mix of enthusiasm tempered withrealism about what mobile commerce will mean for all types of business. After outlining the rise of mobile phones across the world, the authordelves into what types of m-commerce applications will potentiallythrive. From travel and electronic ticketing to gambling and games, theauthor outlines a promising vision for the future, illustrated withcurrent online ventures (often from Europe and the U.K.). As this bookwent to press last year, there are a few anachronisms after the dot-comfallout. (While Webvan, for example, is no longer an example ofsuccessful e-commerce, the force of the argument here for m-commerce isstill quite convincing.)

Later on, the author discusses theinfrastructure of mobile commerce, including the differences betweentraditional and mobile networks. Next comes a full tour of today'smobile devices, from phones and PDAs to smart cards and even wirelessdevices for cars (which are a prime market for new m-commerceapplications). There's also a quick tour of WAP and WML for creatingwireless user interfaces. This technical material is suitable for ITmanagers and even developers new to the world of wireless. The bookconcludes with some predictions about how the move to wireless willimpact society, along with some issues that may help or hinder itsadoption.

All in all, this title provides a good introduction to thenew possibilities of wireless, one with a nicely worldwide perspective. As North American companies get onboard with mobile commerce, thisguide to how m-commerce has been implemented in Europe and Asia canbenefit any decision maker or planner with some good ideas, along withproviding some intelligent predictions about how m-commerce mightchange the ways companies do business in the very near future.--Richard Dragan

Topics covered: The emerging mobile device market (trends andpredictions, market drivers); business opportunities for mobilecommerce (m-commerce); moving beyond e-commerce into m-commerce;customer relationships; mobile services described (including e-mail andmessaging, location finding, and digital content products); consumerm-commerce (travel, ticketing, banking, stocks, gambling, games, andshopping); business m-commerce (mobile markets, collaboration andbetter management through m-commerce); m-commerce network technologies;global, local, and personal networks; cellular networks and standardsdescribed; third-generation (3G) networks; types of mobile devices(including phones, pagers, PDAs, smart cards, and cards); overview ofWAP and WML; XML and mobile content; payment systems and securityissues; societal issues surrounding m-commerce (including privacy, health, access, geography, obsolescence, and cost per customer); andreference to m-commerce resources. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A great starting point
This is a broad treatment of M-commerce and is aimed at a broad audience of business and technical readers. Usually books of this nature are mediocre because of the trade-offs compromises in scope and content that need to be made to accommodate a wide audience. In the case of the book, though, it isn't the case.

First, the book is organized by (1) Business opportunity, (2) Applications, (3) Technology, (4) Issues and (5) Directory of M-Commerce Applications. The first four sections are both insightful and invaluable. The directory of M-commerce applications, in my opinion, does not add any value to the book because information of this nature changes so rapidly that it's inaccurate before a book is even published.

What I like about the book is the even treatment of opportunities that are inherent in M-commerce, including some insights into why Europe does not have the advantages that normally come from being early adopters (in spite of the pessimists who cite a "two year head start" while ignoring the U.S. leadership in technology implementation when we do get around to it), and the interesting view of WAP (Wireless Application Protocol), which many believe to be just an interim - the author advises to put resources and effort into WAP and make it part of a business strategy if you want to be an M-commerce player.

The survey of technologies and standards are also useful, even if given somewhat superficial treatment. The value is you are exposed to all of the factors and considerations with which to make informed decisions or gain an understanding of the M-commerce landscape. In this respect the applications and technology sections of the book can be viewed as a primer.

Overall, this is an excellent book for learning about M-commerce from business and technical points of view because it provides a context and keen insights in both domains. ... Read more

Book Description

The book as the subject of a distinct historical discipline dates from the landmark publication ofL'Apparition du livre by Lucien Febvre and Henri-Jean Martin in 1958. In this further contribution to his pathbreaking work with Febvre, eminent French historian Henri-Jean Martin explores the role of the book and book industry in early modern France. Martin begins with a sweeping look at the revolutionary role played by the new technology of printing in Europe of the Renaissance and Reformation. Shifting the focus to France, he then examines the political implications of publishing in the reign of Francis I, including such topics as the founding of royal and university libraries, the role of church-state relations, Richelieu's cultural program, and censorship.

In revealing case studies of Rouen and Grenoble, Martin pinpoints precisely which books were sold and to which social groups, and explains why the initially successful printers of Rouen were eventually forced out of business by the Parisian courts. Martin also casts a discerning eye on early graphic design--from the first illustrated "coffee table" books purchased by the newly rich to the invention of the paragraph to facilitate reading. And he shows how attempts by the French government to suppress and control publication were eventually thwarted by free market forces from Amsterdam and Neufchatel. This is a book that will be of interest to those who study the history of the book, intellectual history of early modern Europe, and the relation between politics and ideas.

5-0 out of 5 stars Maribeth Clemente ~ The Expert on Cultural Travel!!
I have used The Riches of France countless times on tours that I conduct through France and have found it to enhance my travels immensely! What I like is that from the beginning and throughout the whole book, it is clear that Maribeth's main objective is to report on the history and tradition behind France's most celebrated goods. It is not necessarily a book for die-hard shoppers in search of outstanding bargains at every destinations. ( Although I am certain many shopaholics have rejoiced in using it!!) The Riches of France is , however, a book for curious aspects of French culture, savoir faire, and craftsmanship.)

For me, many of the suggested visits in this book provided unique experiences that I would never have found on my own. Maribeth offers visitors a rare glimpse of fine French craftsmanship and tradition so different from anything here at home. Amd, unlike many other guidebooks, The Riches of France will never go out of date as most of the places featured here have been around for hundreds of years!!... Carol Bonow , Milford, N.H.

2-0 out of 5 stars Wild goose chase without finding a golden egg
I recently traveled to the Normandy and Loire Valley regions in France. I am a passionate shopper and love to find unusual items, simple or extravagant. The book sounded perfect for my adventurous shopping stamina. I have to say that unusual is becoming more and more difficult to find. In the states we are saturated with foreign items that used to seem novel. I guess I have become jaded. I traveled to the suggested village where the basketry industry has thrived for 150 years. Although it was charming to drive through the country, the trip was not worth the while. Not that the baskets were not beautiful, they were very expensive and not worth spending 10 times more because it was made in this charming town. Baskets sold are the varieties available at Cost Plus or Pier One Imports. I must admit I did buy one. Again, I traveled to the town where copper is made. They have all the copper pots that we have in the US and really not that much cheaper if you shipped it overseas. I was disappointed with the suggestions offered in this book. It was not worth my vacation time to hunt these areas down and find what we have in the states. This experience makes me want to write my own book on the subject. It was a wild goose chase which I wouldn't have minded if we had found a golden egg.

5-0 out of 5 stars Riches of France
This turned out to be the best guide I cold ever take with me to France. Comprehensive and easy to use. The author seems to know what is most relevant to visitors and shoppers of France. I wish she would write guides to all major shopping capitals of the world. Highly recommended!

Book Description

The stock market is big news today. Over 50 percent of the American public own stocks directly or indirectly, meaning that the financial well-being of tens of millions of people is directly tied to the market. Alan Greenspan has stated that it is not possible to understand the modern economy without understanding the stock market. But this has not always been so.

Many people now alive can remember a very different time, when the stock market was little more than a primitive insiders' game, viewed by most Americans with skepticism and suspicion. In Toward Rational Exuberance, B. Mark Smith, a professional stock trader with two decades of practical experience, tells the story of how this stunning transformation occurred. It is a fascinating story, involving colorful personalities, dramatic events, and revolutionary new ideas. In the course of the narrative, Smith traces the evolution of popular theories of stock market behavior, showing how they have greatly influenced the way the investing public views the market. But he also shows how some of these theories are based on faulty interpretations of market history that may lead investors astray. Freshly updated, this is a timely -- and definitive -- account of the market's true history and dangerous myths.

5-0 out of 5 stars A dry subject made interesting
A key debate among economists is just how "rational" markets are. One school says they are completely rational, immediately absorbing all available information into the pricing of the items traded in each market. Others (with far fewer followers these days) say markets are far from rational, needing massive government intervention. The terriory between these two viewpoints is most likely where the "truth" lies.

Smith takes an interesting, very focused approach to this debate. His focus is the history of the U.S. stock market; his thesis is that the market is getting closer to rational perfection with each passing decade. The result is an eminently readable book.

In his march through twentieth century stock market history he introduces us to a host of characters - some are famous names you will already know; others are les well known scoundrels that taught lessons valuable to those who police the market.

Smith's story also introduces, and explains, various investment strategies and fads, placing each in historical context.

If you already have a doctorate in economics, this book may teach you little. But if you read history, business and economics titles because you want to, not because you have to, buy this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must Read Material
Mark Smith has succeeded in writing one of the best histories of the stock market certainly in recent times and maybe of all time. The book has rich descriptions of many of the individuals and companies that have shaped the market over the years. But much more importantly, the book has a coherent, important message.

Smith argues, quite persuasively, that the history of the stock market can be seen as a continual (if sometimes bumpy) upward movement in the valuation measures applied to the market. Smith brings us back to the days when common stocks needed to YIELD more than bonds because they were riskier. He then traces the advance of P/E ratios all the way to the present. Although I am still unconvinced by his arguments that the markets of the late 20s and late 60s were not bubbles (he seems to almost make bubbles definitionaly impossible), this book is a valuable contribution to the current debates about the state of the market.

This is not a get-rich-quick book or a how-to manual, but the story Mark Smith lays out is vitally important to all investors and is an enjoyable read to boot. Highly Recommended.

1-0 out of 5 stars Toward Stock Market Apology
Mark Smith, a Goldman Sachs and Wall Street veteran, takes an entire book to attempt to get across the point that stocks should be valued based on future earnings, and are (were) not overpriced in the late 90's. The book was composed during the late 90s and early in 2000, during the biggest stock market bubble of all time. He carries a major grudge against Jessie Livermore, and John Kenneth Galbraith, and takes every opportunity to throw in a "cut" on these 2 historic figures. Seems obvious why he carries a negative torch for Galbraith. Galbraith devotes a chapter in his mid 50's book The Great Crash 1929 to Goldman Sachs participation in Wall Street Chicanery though several investment trust schemes. Galbraith's treatment of Goldman was based on fact. More respect for Galbraith's views should have been shown.

Seems the overall point of the book is that no price is too high for stocks, and that you can't beat the market using technical analysis or fundamental analysis. His halting of his narrative to provide a physical description of characters are both annoying and distracting. Its an obvious attempt to bring some sort of writing style to his descriptions which are clearly not there.

Smith goes to great lengths to make a case for stocks being not overvalued in 1929, the early 70's (during the nifty fifty popularity), and before the 1987 crash. However, he fails to look back on whether the earnings and dividends produced by companies after these times would have justified these valuations. Such an analysis would have made this book valuable. Instead we get late 90's rhetoric to support his case.

He suggests that increased "productivity" through technology justifies higher p/e's. This garbage logic is coming back as the market rallies in late December 2003. Such logic was also used in the 1990s bubble era, just as productivity increases from the prohibition was used to support 1929 bubble valuations. I would suggest saving your money for now, and reading this book after the next stock market calamity which is coming to your neighborhood soon. The book will then be good for a few laughs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Toward Rational Exuberance
While one can always quible and debate various issues, this book provides a wonderful perspective of the development of equity markets in the U.S. It is an extremely well written and well thoughtout book.

I recommend this to all who might be interested in a larger perspective of our capital markets system.

Bravo to Mark Smith

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Background Material for Investors
This book deals with the events shaping the modern (US) stockmarket. Although there is a chapter on the "early" days (up to 1900), the meat of the book concentrates on the 20th century.

It is absolutely fascinating to read how all of the institutions and rules that investors are confronted with on a daily basis came into existance not that long ago for very good reasons. On the way, the author argues against some well-entrenched historical myths.

The book is well-written and as such pleasant to read. It should however be borne in mind that someone who has no background in the stockmarkets whatsoever may not grasp everything being discussed here. However, this adds to a healthy academic standard of the book that is underlined by the many references to further background material.

Those who are invested in the stockmarkets will emerge from reading this book enriched by the knowledge that many things that we see today have been with us before and that many statements still heard today have been disproven twenty years ago. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Do You Have A Fortune Sitting On Your Bookshelf?
If you love to buy and collect new or used books, then chances are you have some very collectible books just lying around. Some may be worth a fortune.

A book doesn't have to be old or a first edition Hemingway to be worth money. There are thousands of highly collectible modern first editions. It's easy to find them, too . . . often at prices far below market value.

The secret: Learn which books are in demand (many are more common than you may think), and then try to find them in first editions. Some may be sitting on your shelf right now.

Often, publishers state "First Edition" on a title page, but far from always. And even if you know you have a first edition, how do you know if it's collectible? Ellis gives detailed information on how to identify first editions and books worth collecting. You'll learn about how later editions can be collectible, too.

There's tons of solid, money making advice on how to become a book collector, even if you're on a limited budget, including tips on "avoiding costly mistakes that many beginners make."

Bonus: A section that lists "Over 1,000 Most Collectible Books and Authors."

Best of all: It's fun. You'll learn how to scout for books at major book stores, used book sales, remainder bins, tag sales and more. If you already enjoy buying books, why not turn it into a hobby that pays?

4-0 out of 5 stars Lots of good tips, made me a collector
After reading this I started hunting for finds on ebay and the local bookstore, oh, and my mom's garage too where I found a first edition "To Kill a Mockingbird" which unfortunately turned out to be a book club editon. But it is certainly fun hunting once armed with solid information. This book is a real good place to start for someone thinking about becoming a collector, a part time dealer, or someone that is interested in obtaining a better collection through trading. I'd also recommend this book for someone that has had a family collection of books passed down, know what you have before getting rid of it at a yard sale.
One more person that would benefit from this book is the reader that wants to branch out, never read sci fi or mystery? Well Ellis has an extensive list of modern authors that he recommends buying for collecting but guess what, they are collectable because they are well written, so if you want to try out something new this list is a great place to look.

4-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive guide to book collecting
I have found Ian Ellis' book quite readable and interesting. I have been selling books online for half a year or so and was looking to expand my knowledge base. I would say that Stephen Windwalker's Selling Used Books Online was more helpful for my own purposes of selling used, but not necessarily collectible ones, online. Nevertheless, I found it to be an education on how the book trade operates outside of and before the Internet. It was especially helpful to learn about modern first editions and what makes books collectible and valuable. Stylistically I found Ellis very easy to read, although he has an annoying habit of dropping the name of authors and titles that may mean more to those already initiated in the world of book collecting. I found it to be distracting. More helpful is the list of 1,001 books worth collecting in the last chapter of the book. I found the chapter addressing the advent of the Internet for bookselling to be somewhat out of date - understandable since it was revised in 2001, but I learned very little from this chapter. Overall it was a helpful book that expanded my knowledge base about the book trade, where my experience is mostly limited to online book sales.

4-0 out of 5 stars Quite simply, I recommend this book.
I'm impressed with the level of honesty the author, whose life-long career is in books, used, collectible, etc etc..., shares with the reader. He's not afraid to tell secrets of the trade. He's not afraid of sharing the excitement that he evidently feels about the trade. But most importantly, he also faces describes candidly the tedious nature of making a living from book buying-trading.... It sobered me up very fast... It didn't make me want to plunge into a new hobby without the proper warnings.
Additionally, I found the information regarding procuring and properly identifying a "1st edition" book highly useful in terms of its clarifying certain ambiguous and confusing terminology... WIth this information, I am prepared against book sellers who profit from ignorance. I would recommend this book to anyone before venturing to purchase their favorite author's first editions...

4-0 out of 5 stars great Place to Start
If one is new to collecting books of any kind, this is the book to start off with. It takes the reader on a wonderful journey of what a book actually is comprised of and the history of books in general. This book gives a great foundation while all the time the reader is learning apt and required terminology to continue the journey into actually identifying and buying good collectible books, and then how to repair and care for them, ultimately storing or selling them. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Completely misses the mark
This book appears to have been written for individuals who do not possess even the most basic business/common sense. For example, here is a sample paragraph under the heading "Potential Clients":

Where you locate may also determine the kind of customers you attract. For example, if you have a store in a low-rent area, you will not want to make and sell gift baskets that average $100 each; attracting the local audience would mean developing more economical baskets.

. . . well duh! The book is full of simplistic information consistent with the above. The book also appears to have been written as a generic template (for other how-to books) with a few specific references to gift baskets.

If you have considered starting your home-based business and at least conceptualized a feasibility plan, I'd recommend instead Shirley Frazier's, "How to Start a Home-Based Gift Basket Business".

1-0 out of 5 stars This was a lousy investment.
This book discussed the specific business of gift baskets very infrequently and was extremely outdated. There was no mention of the internet whatsoever and the use of a computer was virtually non-existent as well. It would have been nice to know how to set up inventory and manage bookkeeping through Excel, for example. I agree with the first review also--there was no information on exactly what labor and products are needed to put together a gift basket (other than the obvious gifts and basket). The title of this book should be "Start Your Own Fill-in-the-Blank".

3-0 out of 5 stars A WORTHWHILE BUY
I really enjoyed this book however I felt it should have included a section on how to put a gift basket together for those of us who don't have a clue. I still found the book to be very helpful and worth purchasing. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars What tips?
I got this book before a trip to Rio and it was a waste of space! It was so vague, you could get the same information from any hotel. It's also not helpful to write a guide like this in novel form - we need lists and adresses and numbers. There weren't a lot of specifics and not that many stores given the book's size.

5-0 out of 5 stars From gems and art to antiques and handcrafts
Ron & Caryl Krannich's Treasures And Pleasures Of Rio And Sao Paula explores two popular Latin cities, revealing their shopping opportunities from gems and art to antiques and handcrafts. From planning the trip to observing shopping rules of the region, Treasures And Pleasures Of Rio And Sao Paula provides important information. ... Read more

Amazon.com

A surprising array of sophisticated electronic applications that have no need for a tethering umbilical cord are already transforming the way we live, work, and play. Going Wireless analyzes many of these personal, professional, and leisure-time operations now in use by organizations ranging from Sears to the Dave Matthews Band to the Dominican Sisters of Mission San Jose, and projects ways their descendants could become even more ubiquitous. Jaclyn Easton, a Los Angeles Times columnist who profiled e-commerce pioneers in StrikingItRich.com, looks here at how the Internet revolution is evolving into a wireless reality. "Have you ever waved a Speedpass wand to buy gas at a Mobil station? That's wireless," she writes. "Did you ever rent a car with a global positioning system giving you directions as you drove? Did you know that clothing manufacturers are now sewing wireless technology into garments to track the item through both the supply chain and the retail chain?" In a manner that allows her to address weighty concepts without losing those of us who admit to being challenged by technology, Easton examines ways companies are using wireless technology externally to serve their customers and clients and internally to support their employees and suppliers. She additionally devotes a section to new businesses ("tracking what matters to you most"), markets ("Generation Y-erless"), and challenges (including privacy and security). The result is both provocative and enlightening. --Howard Rothman ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Emerging Technology - New Opportunities
Easton takes a very difficult subject and pieces together how wireless will make our lives simpler and faster still. We can get what we want, when we want it. We can make an order from a wireless hand held device and pick it up within minutes.

This book is made to order if you want to see where wireless is going. Easton is well researched and writes to inform.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good book on new business opportunities
The book presents a wide range of business cases as well as scenarios where wireless technology is used or can be used. The author sometimes gets too excited about the potential of the technologies involved but she proves that, at least in some areas, wireless is revolutionizing business, creating business value by providing convenience, mobility, agility and improved data accuracy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome book! Exciting! Riveting! GET IT!
I probably sound like a paid endorser, but the truth is, this book is fantastic. It's written beautifully, contains riveting stories, and is packed with insights, ideas, trends, and more. It's written for anyone in business ready to cash in on the future. Wireless is the next big trend. This book shows you how to surf it to the bank. Get it. Get it right now. -- Joe Vitale, author of way too many books to list here, ...

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
I hesitated before buying Going Wireless because I didn't want a book about
how wireless works. Then I stumbled on the Newsweek review, read a couple
excerpts on the Going Wireless website and then bought it. My hunch was
right. This book is a real winner by cutting out the "geek speak" and
instead showing me directly how wireless can benefit my business. I highly
recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Smart Read
SUBJECT: Fascinating

Thanks to this book I can say that the phrase "entertaining business book"is no longer an oxymoron. Easton did it with "StrikingItRich.com" and now again with "Going Wireless." This book is a breeze to read and wildly informative. ... Read more
