Book Description

This book is based on fresh and original research with 50 EU business associations and 150 of their members, drawing on literature from a wide range of disciplines, and presents some highly original synthesis. It assesses the effectiveness of EU business associations and their potential to bring value to the EU policy-making process and to their members, and lends a methodology by which they can be evaluated. The book bocates and assesses factors in the environment of EU business associations that influence their 'governabliity,' that is their ability to unify their members' intersts and to ensure they work together for the sam purpose. It then examines variation in the governability of EU business associations. From this, the reader will be able to understand the prospect for, and limitations on, the effectiveness of EU business associations, why they vary in their capacities and performance, and why they vary in their ability to bring value to their members and to the EU policy-making process.

Book Description

During the nineteenth century, Beirut was transformed from a provincial town of 6,000 to a political and cultural center of 120,000, becoming the leading seaport of the eastern Mediterranean. This study examines the migration that lay behind much of this growth – why the migrants came, what economic changes resulted, and particularly how social relations among the city’s religious communities were transformed. The author shows how Beirut grew from a community where Muslims and Christians lived side by side in harmony to a city where new sectarian tensions reflected fundamental changes in the socioeconomic and political balance, changes that shaped the social relations of modern Lebanon. ... This is a well researched and balanced account of the social and economic changes that accompanied the huge transformation of Beirut from a small town to a metropolis in the span of less than 100 years. The book is easy to read and adds quite a bit to what we know about lebanon in the 19th century. ... Read more

Book Description

InMerchants and Empire, Cathy Matson examines the economic ideas and behavior of New York City's commercial wholesalers, especially the middling merchants who, as a majority of active traders, affected the character of city commerce over its colonial years. Although less prominent in transatlantic dry goods commerce than the great traders, this middling majority spread dissenting economic ideas and flouted political authority time and again when the benefits to their interests were clear. Indeed, middling or lesser merchants fashioned a plausible alternative to mercantilism, and contributed significantly to the challenges Americans offered to British rule in the final colonial years.

Book Description

This is the second, thoroughly revised edition of Shereen Ratnagar's Encounters: The Westerly Trade of the Harappa Civilization. The book explores the scope of the trading contacts of the centres that fell within the "Indus Valley" civilizations. In doing so, it describes the remarkable range of merchandise and the long distances over which luxuries and ordinary goods were transported. In this new edition, Shereen Ratnagar has expanded her scope of study considerably and has included exciting new data recently available from excavations in West Asia. These have helped refine the perspective on trade in this period. Using all this information, the author takes forward her hypothesis of the Harappa Civilization being part of a World System. In this new edition, Shereen Ratnagar also indicates that for understanding Harappa, a chronology based on synchronisms with Meopotamia is important. Finally, the new information also provides a fresh perspective to understanding the decline of the Harappa Civilization. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for those interested in the great age of sail.
One of the most fascinating accounts of sailing, history and economics I've ever encountered, this book is a must if you have an interest in the great age of sail.

Certainly more than a dry recounting of historical events, Morrison helps you understand the passions, motivation and impact on the economic development of the western world of those who came and went from Boston and other East coast ports in the early to mid-1800's.

The last two chapters, in particular were absolutely rivetting. The era of the clipper ships was not only amazingly brief, but possibly one of the biggest catalysts for economic change in the 19th century. In particular, the extremely detailed description of the activities on the deck of a huge clipper moving into a berthing at a Boston pier, completely through the skill of the experienced captain literally moved me to tears. Understanding the pride of a seaman in presenting the best face of his ship and crew to the watching throngs on shore is something that any sailor can readily identify with.

You'll find it a very rewarding read. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Title should read: B2B 101
I am also writing this review, as I selected this book from a list given to us in our MBA/MSE class. I thought that this book would be a good insight to B2B and how to come about with a strategy. The book actually elaborates on the first half on the differences between B2B and B2C, only to conclude that they are very similar with a major difference on who are the users : businesses only as opposed to businesses and consumers, no surprises here! There are also constant repetitions on the definitions of B2B throughout the book, and thus one never feels as if they are reading new material, but just a definition with different wording. The final chapters touch a little on some technical aspects required for the proper set up of a B2B. Mainly the types of software that should be used or language, such as JAVA, HTML and XML. Also they provide insight on the security aspect of B2B as well as the need and advantages of Virtual Private Networks (VPN). There is also some guidance on requirements for the success to building the proper B2B by creating partnerships and alliances, and the use of Intranet and extranet. The downfall here is that all this information is extremely vague, you will find passages which will state that XML compacts the information that you can place on a web page, thus accelerating the transfer rate, but that is as far as it gets. I would compare the information that I gathered in reading this book, to the information that I obtain when I read Business technology magazines: interesting, easy to comprehend, and vague. The most frustrating part of reading this book is to know that a lot of the information is already somewhat outdated, and that examples of the companies that are benchmarked are companies that today are in serious financial trouble.

4-0 out of 5 stars Considering the price, this book is well worth it
Recently, I read Cunningham's How to Build a Profitable E-commerce Strategy for a BUS240 class at San Jose State University. I found this book to be very beneficial. Prior to reading it, I, like most, had heard the term B2B, but I was not clear on the differences. This book provided an appropriate level of detail for someone who might consider themselves "new" to the world of e-commerce. Its strengths were its simplicity and its breadth of topics covered. Its weaknesses might be that it was more of an overview, versus delving in to deeper levels of detail as the title may suggest. I reads well and does not bog down in any particular area which kept it interesting. For anyone considering a B2B venture, without extensive prior experience, I would definitely recommend they read Cunningham's work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Update on the first edition
The revised and updated version of B2B (paperback edition) reflects the changes in the market since the first version was published. As the author of the book, I would like to thank both the input from the press, editors, industry analysts and users of B2B technologies for their experiences and knowledge to keep this title current. I hope that others still find this a useful blueprint for the development and delivery of their stategies.

5-0 out of 5 stars B2B - Bible.
Charles Stevens, this is possibly the best B2B book I have ever read. Cunningham provides a clear-cut approach to B2B business. He clearly defines differences and avoids excessive jargon making this book ideal for the experiences business professional or anyone new to the field. It was key in developing the fundamentals and our approaches of our own corporate B2B plan. As sacrilegious as it may be this book has been our B2B Bible. 75% of business - to - business transactions for computers, electronics, and storage are done online. There is a need to develop B2B commerce, improving systems and methods are crucial. People and corporations are hesitant about investing in the Internet because of the current tension in the ecommerce market highlighted by the media. Let it be understood that the failings of high-profile corporations should not be a reflection on the B2B market. Even considering this media-driven pseudo-bear market the estimated revenue from B2B business for 2004 exceeds 3 trillion dollars. Pick up this book, at the very least flip through it at the bookstore (and take notes).

5-0 out of 5 stars B2B: It's about creating value
Many organizations today are focused on the bad news in the B2B markets. Failing exchanges, dot com crashes and vendor and consulting layoffs. In my experience, B2B is and will be a potent weapon the the development and optimization of business processes and technology to support new and better ways of conducting business. Collaborative technologies, widespread affordable communication and faster to implement solutions will allow winning firms to take the lead in this segment of the market. While some start-ups have failed, most are because they were not adding enough value to their clients and partners in the first place. B2B technology, tools and platforms are providing the opportunity for organizations to improve and optimize their position in the market. There are good examples of start-ups, existing businesses and others moving to leverage the Internet sprinkled throughout this book. Winning strategies are built by companies following good business practices and being innnovative in their approach to the market. This book was obviously created as a blueprint for individuals and organizations that are looking for a path through this maze. The examples are based on strategies that have worked and produced excellent results for the firm's using them. Like all technologies and strategies there are winners and losers. Emulating winners is still the best way that we know to reduce risk at the early stages in the marketplace. This book helps others achieve this goal, by providing guidance on the good, bad and the ugly of this complex subject. An powerful and comprehensive read. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars What would we do without it?
A must for editorial and/or stock photographers. A bible of contact information. A few photo buyers, like those who only buy one or two photos from freelancers a year, could be left out of the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Read it Cover to Cover
Okay, this is not the type of book one should read cover to cover but I did it anyway. As a young photographer taking baby steps to a new career this book has been invaluable.

Not only does it instill me with the confidence that there is a market for the type of photography I produce, but it gives the contact information I need an the instructions on how to make contact with each photobuyer. The scattered articles also help in pointing the direction for further research into the business aspect of photography.

I will most defiantly make this a yearly purchase! So I will always have the most up to date information on who buys what, when, how, and for how much.

2-0 out of 5 stars 2003 Photographer's Market
Having read the other reviews I was probably expecting a bit too much. I admit there is a whole heap of information here, but wading through it is headache inducing. One thing I really hate is the way the subject index just throws everything together: magazines, stock agencies, greetings card companies etc. After a few minutes your brain starts to spin. Surely subdividing the subject index would be more helpful.

Another complaint is that there are no big national newspapers listed. The 'Newspapers and Newsletters' section is truly pathetic, covering every obscure backwater newsletter, but nothing substantial apart from one entry: New York Times Magazine. The British BFP Market Handbook lists all the national newspapers, so why are there none here?

Finally, it seems if publications or organisations do not reply to a listing request, they are deleted. Wouldn't it be better to still include their info with a symbol indicating that it might be out of date material? For instance, you do not list the National Enquirer, but this has earnt freelances a lot of money over the years. It may not be serious journalism but it is a good market.

5-0 out of 5 stars More info than you'll ever use
This book is very exhaustive on places to sell photos. It is almost overwhelming trying to find places to send photos too. If you can't find a place to sell photos in here than you'll never be able to sell or post photos.

Do you want to bring back a trunk or two full of Silver (real), rubies, pashminas, hand painted bone china and live like the maharanas in the Palaces? Well then this is the book for you. Its simple, but I would never have known to go to these stores and find such treasures without this guide. Who would have thought we would see a silver covered canopy bed for $3000! Its obvious that expensive hotels are nice, but not so obvious where to get good deals on products. You feel like an "expert buyer." I only wish they had more info on "what makes rubies or silver" real or valuable as without this book it seems so easy to fall into fakes (esp Thailand). Instead of half of the book being about haggling, if there were details on good books to read up on about: carpets, jewelry, silver, whatever can be bought in that country, this series would be much better than what it is. Obviously, you can never get a good deal unless you know about what you are buying but it could also be a primer on luxurious things for the armchair traveller.
