When prehistoric tribes first accumulated surplus food and other materials, they began to trade with one another. Eventually, coins, and then paper money, made it easier to keep track of the exchange of goods and services between tribes and nations. Land and sea trade routes, the industrial revolution, mass production, and today, the Internet, helped spread trade and commerce throughout the world. ... Read more

Book Description

"Makers of nothing, sellers of everything" is how official records define the marchands merciers of eighteenth-century Paris. These merchants were centered around the rue St. Honore, identified then, as now, with the luxury trades for which Paris was already internationally famous.They established trading rights in items like fans, wigs, mirrors, and even ink, all of which were supplied to markets that were fashion-driven and likely to expand rapidly. Through an examination of inventories and other records, Sargentson offers a new perspective on the history of consumption, painting a fascinating picture of the marketplace for luxury goods during the fifty years that preceded the Revolution. Her text raises important questions about the life cycle of objects and the way they were valued; the trading options of merchants who operated within narrow margins of credit and cash flow; and the relations between the different groups jostling for position and advantage. ... Book Description

Hardbound. In the 16th Edition of Advances in Econometrics we present twelve papers discussing the current interface between Marketing and Econometrics.The authors are leading scholars in the fields and introduce the latest models for analysing marketing data.The papers are representative of the types of problems and methods that are used within the field of marketing.Marketing focuses on the interaction between the firm and the consumer.Economics encompasses this interaction as well as many others.Economics, along with psychology and sociology, provides a theoretical foundation for marketing.Given the applied nature of marketing research, measurement and quantitative issues arise frequently.Quantitative marketing tends to rely heavily upon statistics and econometrics.However, quantitative marketing can place a different emphasis upon the problem than econometrics, even when using the same techniques. A basic difference between quantitat ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Source for Modern Econometric Marketing Models
"Econometric Models in Marketing" provides an excellent overview of current econometric modeling techniques used by leading marketing academics. An important component of this book, in comparison with other marketing texts, is the emphasis on linking statistical models and economic theory - the structural approach. Several chapters demonstrate the tremendous opportunities for economic theory to help guide the marketing researcher in choosing the appropriate data and the model specification. The book also shows how economic theory can help control for misleading estimation biases. At the same time, it recognizes the limitations of theory for providing useful information to the researcher. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Used Book Lover's Guide to the Central States
Truly a treasure map for the reader! Even if the book did not necessarily give a favorable review of the different book stores,it was a blast to seek some of these shops out. The main drawback to this book is it becomes dated when a tiny bookstore doesn't make it and shuts down. But I've been to some of the shops that ARE still open and loved them all! I was also able to find books that are waaayyy out of print. If you are looking for ignorant used book sellers to sell you a 1st edition "Gone With the Wind" forget it. Most book sellers in this manual are savvy when it comes to the trade. When I retire from my real world job and open my book store in 14 years, I hope to be listed in this book. Please keep revising and printing this one! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great guide for where to shop
I bought the 1993 edition while I was living in Central NY and can only comment on the Central NY listings. I found the format easy to skim through and the maps/directions extremely helpful. All the information you might want is included--phone numbers, hours of operation, genres sold, etc. Occasionally the description of a store's offerings was not quite right, or the place in question no longer existed, but such changes can happen when there are several years between editions. I intend to buy the edition for NC once I get moved in. ... Read more

Book Description

Emerging East Asian economies have seen their share of world exports more than triple during the past quarter-century, and intraregional trade has driven this growth. Broad measures of development in East Asia have improved at the same headlong pace. Why push further integration now? Two economic events of historic proportions provide the context: strategic thinking of development in the region following the East Asian financial crisis of 1997-98 and the accession of China to the World Trade Organization. Policymakers interested in a stable, prosperous region are concerned by mildly rising inequality within countries and a widening gap between richer economies and the poorest economies. Increasingly, the development agenda in the region - with its focus on growth, jobs, and social stability - and the trade policy agenda - with its focus on market access and competitiveness - have become intertwined. East Asian policymakers seek to develop a coherent set of economic policies that can deliver stability, growth, and regional integration. Without attempting to be comprehensive, East Asia Integrates offers fundamental strategies that promote cross-border flows of trade, along with domestic policies on logistics, trade facilitation, standards and institutions to maximize the impact of these flows on development and distribute the gains from trade widely. As the authors demonstrate, multilateral and regional trade initiatives must provide a compelling vision of how integration can deliver broadly shared growth and prosperity if they are to succeed. In addition, they must use the momentum offered by trade agreements to address the links between trade on the one hand, and social stability, poverty reduction, and growth on the other. ... Book Description

Despite the increasing occurrence of consumer boycotts, little has been written about this form of social and economic protest. This timely volume fills the knowledge gap by examining boycotts both historically and currently. Drawing on both published and unpublished material as well as personal interviews with boycott groups and their targets, Monroe Friedman discusses different types of boycotts-from their historical focus on labor and economic concerns to the more recent inclusion of issues such as minority rights, animal welfare, and environmental protection. He also documents the shift in strategic emphasis from the marketplace (cutting consumer sales) to the media (securing news coverage to air criticism of a targeted firm). In turn, these changes in boycott substance and style offer insights into larger upheavals in the social and economic fabric of 20th century America. ... Read more

Book Description

Carin Goldberg, ever on the lookout for useful images for her graphic projects, acquired a mail-order catalog dated winter 1951 to 1952. This two-pound "wish book" offered Americans everything they could ever need or hope to acquire.

Here, Goldberg noted, were consumer goods presented as icons: brassieres and girdles were wonders of engineering, water heaters displayed as if they were pieces of sculpture-hundreds of pages of clothes and appliances and tools elevated to stellar status. In this very personal selection of more than 60 of these images, she prompts one to wonder about the objects themselves, how they are presented, what they meant then and what they mean now. The images she has chosen are pure forms, minimally decorative, juxtaposed to suggest further associations and ideas. The curve of a bodice mirrors the stitched seam of a basketball; a ceiling light's contours echo those of a flowing skirt.

Isolated from any sales description, these pieces are seductive and alluring in a completely unexpected way. An introduction by curator Dorothy Twining Globus forms a context for these images, both past and present.

Catalog is a jewel to hold, peruse, and enjoy. The book's stunning design features a specialty binding; the front cover is embellished simply by a custom metal plate bearing the title. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars They cut down trees for this.
Now here is something a bit different, a handsomely produced book with a small metal plate fixed to the front cover that displays the title, nice paper and printing inside. That is far as I'm going to go with the praise because I thought this book was incredibly boring.

Carin Goldburg it seems was captivated by the sepia illustrations in a fifties mail-order catalog and this book shows these images vastly enlarged, one to a page.Mostly female attire, with a look-in for other everyday household objects, you can look through the sixty-eight pages in about two minutes and that's it!Oh yes, you should know that seven of the pages carry the books title one letter per page.

I don't even think this will be worth buying when it pops up on the BOOKS REDUCED shelf.

5-0 out of 5 stars not what you might expect
this is not some nostalgic look backward at the wacky and retro world of catalogs.this is a lovingly constructed paean to imagery we have all seen, but are now able to understand (with Ms. Goldberg's remarkable touch) as the art of the common object.
her book is about the love of the ordinary.it is about the power of the familiar.and about a time when anonymous artists made ethereal images of the corporeal world, then assembled them into books of contemporary reality.
or maybe i love it becuase it is just beautiful. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent guide to many many streets
Full of information about street markets in London, not only the world famous Portobello Road or Camden Town. When I travelled to England in 2000, I was fed up with fasionable / tourist markets, and then I found this book, which took me to some other streets to spend a ideal Saturday morning in. The author knows the excitement when you stroll down the streets filled with colourful fruit and veg, clothes, bottles of shampoo, cushions and what-you-call bric-a-blac. (Shoppers and traders are there as well as pickpockets!) He says he was led to write about street trade to see the multi-cultural / multi-racial energy at Ridley Road market in East London, and this explains a lot. This book actually guide you down to the core of those traditional street trade. Maps, transport information and where-to-park suggestions --really helpful for drivers-- and some drawings, but no glossy photographs. Thin and small enough to carry about all the time. ... Book Description

Attention to environmental issues is vital if the full potential economic benefits of international trade are to be realized. Greening the Americas offers a number of analytically rigorous proposals to ensure that economic integration in the Western Hemisphere proceeds in an environmentally sustainable and politically sensible manner.

The chapters review the history of the environmental negotiations of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), explore the treaty's economic and environmental impacts, and draw lessons that can be applied to the ongoing Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA) negotiations. Greening the Americas analyzes in detail NAFTA's environmental elements, highlighting those provisions that should be included in future agreements and those that should be amended or dropped. The book includes contributions from a diverse set of participants in the debate about how to link environmental policy and trade agreements. The perspectives range from the broadly optimistic about environmental effects of trade and trade liberalization to a more pessimistic view of the economic and social effects of open markets and economic integration. What unites all of the contributions is a commitment to engage constructively in the policy dialogue over how best to integrate trade and environmental policy making in the Americas.

Book Description

World hunger, jobs, the overall economic prospects of developing and developed countries alike are all being influenced by the international negotiations about trade, agriculture, services, investment and intellectual property rights going on at the World Trade Organization (WTO). Based on interviews with the participants, this remarkable book lifts the shroud of secrecy surrounding these ostensibly democratic negotiations.

What emerges is a disturbing account entirely at odds with the official picture of a rules-based consensus emerging out of multilateral trade discussions in which all WTO member countries are equal participants. In reality:

· Closed doors rather than open access and public information is the preferred mode of negotiation;

· Decisions are often being made without the full approval of developing countries;

· The tiny delegations of the poorest and smallest countries have only a limited capacity to calculate in advance the implications of what they are being asked to sign up to;

· More seriously still, there are instances of illegitimate pressures and inducements being offered by the US and EU delegations - including threats to report non-compliant Third World delegates to their superiors, and hints that aid to countries refusing to kow-tow may be withheld.

The revelations contained in this book are of enormous importance to all those concerned that international institutions should be more transparent and democratic, and that the rules being developed for the world economy should primarily be geared to solving the pressing humanitarian problems of poverty, hunger, jobs and improvements in the standards of living of all those being left behind by the process of globalization.
