1-0 out of 5 stars A book that needs updating
This book needs its concepts and focus updated and broaden. I found the book had a very narrow point of view, focusing only on a government perspective of approaching project and engineering management, and providing very little on private industry's management point of view in the book. Even when the book repeats again and again concepts on how government, DoD and NASA do business, the concepts it presents are different (outdated) from how government and DoD do business presently. In short, the book needs to be updated extensively, perhaps a brand new one written altogether.

5-0 out of 5 stars A grad student's review
Howard Eisner's book is an outstanding work that bridges the gulf between project management and systems engineering. As a 46 year old student of Dr Eisner's, I assert this with 25 years of experience in both disciplines. His book has been a wonderful aid to refreshing and updating my skills. If a section with the answers to the problems had been included, I would have said SIX stars... Highly recommended. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars a must have reference
While nearly all SPSS versions now have pull-down windows, there are many times where you don't want to use the defaults and want to modify the pull-down options. This book includes syntax for all commands in SPSS Base for use on statistical procedures. There is an introduction that explains some of the common commands and then a comprehensive user's manual for the language alphabetized by main commands. There is also a subject index and a keyword index that is very helpful. While the examples in the book leave something to be desired, the book takes some of the fear out of creating syntax for novices. It is a much needed companion for students and experts alike. This book can be used with most SPSS versions. ... Read more

Book Description

The second edition of this popular introduction to the classical underpinnings of the mathematics behind finance continues to combine sounds mathematical principles with economic applications.Concentrating on the probabilistics theory of continuous arbitrage pricing of financial derivatives, including stochastic optimal control theory and Merton's fund separation theory, the book is designed for graduate students and combines necessary mathematical background with a solid economic focus. It includes a solved example for every new technique presented, contains numerous exercises and suggests further reading in each chapter. In this substantially extended new edition, Bjork has added separate and complete chapters on measure theory, probability theory, Girsanov transformations, LIBOR and swap market models, and martingale representations, providing two full treatments of arbitrage pricing: the classical delta-hedging and the modern martingales.More advanced areas of study are clearly marked to help students and teachers use the book as it suits their needs. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Hell, I should have rated it 5 stars!
If you're going to be introduced to Derivatives pricing and Quantitative finance in continuous time, you need some basics in probability theory, an elementary introduction to stochastic calculus and you need "bjork". It tells you the equation and how to understand it.

It's the best source for a complete understanding of the basics of arbitrage free pricing in continuous time; whether it's in complete or incomplete markets.

The best feature of this book is how the author invariably provides an "intuitive interpretation or explanation" to convey critical concepts. {Things like market price of risk in the context of interest rate modelling, change of measure etc...}

Why I rated the book 4 instead of 5?
I will not forgive "Tomas bjork" not to have covered the Libor Market Model; it's "THE" model and therefore should be covered in great details by any book of this calibre. A new edition of this book with the libor market model is needed.
Having said that, the coverage he gives to the popular short rate models is worth every read!

Msc Financial Engineering at ISMA Center, Reading - UK.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good introductory book
It is a good book to read as an introduction to the field. The author is successful in conveying the intuition behind the models instead of striving for complete mathematical rigor. I recommend this book if you want to quickly get acquainted with derivatives pricing but are a bit afraid of the higher math seen in other books.

5-0 out of 5 stars An FE Bible
The central text for IOE 552(financial Engineering I) at the University of Michigan. Halfway through the course and I really understand the application of Ito's Lemma and the Feynman-Kac stochastic representation theorem. This book has just the right mixture of narative story telling, and mathematical rigor. The derivations are accessible to those with a semester of advanced calculus and a semester of probability. Over and over, Bjork shows that the secret of success in Financial Engineering is "RAIL" which stands for the "Relentless Application of Ito's Lemma".

5-0 out of 5 stars Rigorous, complete, easy to understand, so worth studying
One of the best book on derivatives pricing. Professor Björk explain from the simplest model to the more elaborate pricing techniques not only the mathematical tools necessary but the methodology in a very clear and understandable manner. I wish I had a Professor like him !! Thank You Professor Björk.

Book Description

Applied Time Series Modelling and Forecasting provides a relatively non-technical introduction to applied time series econometrics and forecasting involving non-stationary data. The emphasis is very much on the why and how and, as much as possible, the authors confine technical material to boxes or point to the relevant sources for more detailed information.

This book is based on an earlier title Using Cointegration Analysis in Econometric Modelling by Richard Harris. As well as updating material covered in the earlier book, there are two major additions involving panel tests for unit roots and cointegration and forecasting of financial time series. Harris and Sollis have also incorporated as many of the latest techniques in the area as possible including: testing for periodic integration and cointegration; GLS detrending when testing for unit roots; structural breaks and season unit root testing; testing for cointegration with a structural break; asymmetric tests for cointegration; testing for super-exogeniety; seasonal cointegration in multivariate models; and approaches to structural macroeconomic modelling. In addition, the discussion of certain topics, such as testing for unique vectors, has been simplified.

Applied Time Series Modelling and Forecasting has been written for students taking courses in financial economics and forecasting, applied time series, and econometrics at advanced undergraduate and postgraduate levels. It will also be useful for practitioners who wish to understand the application of time series modelling e.g. financial brokers.

Data sets and econometric code for implementing some of the more recent procedures covered in the book can be found on the following web site www.wiley.co.uk/harris ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Simple overview of stats and how to use the software
SPSS is a popular software package used by graduate students in the social sciences, since it's a user-friendly software unlike some of the more complicated packages like SAS or Minitab that require programming language and a very sound understanding of statistics before you use them.

This guide is a basic guide to data analysis, and how to do this in SPSS. In fact, I would almost say that it is over simplified - almost all of these analyses can be done in Excel - except that it's not as easy to do it in Excel as it is in SPSS. Although SPSS itself may be somewhat simple compared to other stats software, the guide itself is marvelous.

The guide not only takes you through the steps of "how to" use the software package SPPS, but it also explains why you would want to run a particular analysis and how to interpret the results. It then goes on to explain how to modify those results or analysis according to your preferences.

For those people wishing to run more complex models, such as multiple regression, it is probably recommended that you know the statistical theory behind it, or are taking a class on it, rather than try to do this simply by using the guide, in order to make sure that you achieve a full understanding of the results. Because SPSS is so easy to use, it's easy to fall into the trap of having it run an analysis that is not so easy to interpret.

However, for people who are using SPSS as part of a course, this guide is absolutely great and I highly recommend it for any SPSS users, since the help function in SPSS itself is virtually useless.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful
This book leads you step by step to understand the statistics very well

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for converting theory to SPSS mechanics
I've found this book extremely helpful in understanding how to set up the kinds of analysis in SPSS that I want to conduct. I have the theoretical understanding to design the experiment and know what analyses need to be conducted (and could do it by hand if I had to), but this books helps me understand how to efficiently analyze my data within the program itself. Of related books I have looked at, this is the best. The one drawback is that it is designed as a classroom tool with exercises and learning points and not for the professional user. That space could be used for more information and explanation.

Book Description

Applied statisticians in many fields frequently analyze time-to-event data. While the statistical tools presented in this book are applicable to data from medicine, biology, public health, epidemiology, engineering, economics and demography, the focus here is on applications of the techniques to biology and medicine.

The analysis of survival experiments is complicated by issues of censoring and truncation. The use of counting process methodology has allowed for substantial advances in the statistical theory to account for censoring and truncation in survival experiments. This book makes these complex techniques accessible to applied researchers without the advanced mathematical background. The authors present the essentials of these techniques, as well as classical techniques not based on counting processes, and apply them to data.

The second edition contains some new material as well as solutions to the odd-numbered revised exercises. New material consists of a discussion of summary statistics for competing risks probabilities in Chapter 2 and the estimation process for these probabilities in Chapter 4. A new section on tests of the equality of survival curves at a fixed point in time is added in Chapter 7. In Chapter 8 an expanded discussion is presented on how to code covariates and a new section on discretizing a continuous covariate is added. A new section on Lin and Ying's additive hazards regression model is presented in Chapter 10. We now proceed to a general discussion of the usefulness of this book incorporating the new material with that of the first edition. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book of Studying Survival Analysis
In this new edition, most of the errata are corrected and the texts are explained in a more detailed way.

The formulae are correct and the examples are explained in a more direct and expressive way than that in the 1st edition.

The most valuable one is its Theoretical Notes and Practical Notes. They show a lot of different points of views.

A good-buy and must-read for those want to have an intense level in Survival Analysis. Suitable for elementary and intermediate candidates to read and study.

Ian Lauder

5-0 out of 5 stars A good book of studying Survival Analysis
In this new edition, many errata are corrected and each of the theories has a reason why this is true. Although they may be more practical in view, it is very good to use them to learn Survival Analysis, which is more realistic in sense.

In its Theoretical Notes and Practical Notes, there are a lot of different views and sights to show that which is the best to use. The examples are more or less good one and explained in a more detailed way than that in the 1st edition. A good-buy and must-read for those want to have a thorough view in this aspects. Read them carefully! Better than Cox's in this new edition. Buy and read this new edition!

3-0 out of 5 stars Good for practitioners, but not for statistician
This book describes formulas and list of applications, but it don't give more accurate statistical reasons. I get how to use the formulas, but i think i am more interested in how to get the formulas

1-0 out of 5 stars Worst Textbook Ever
I don't want to say hard words, but this is really a completely USELESS book. It says nothing but only presenting tons of lengthy, non-understandable formulas, without a single explanation. Why would people need such a JUNK book?

There are people that need it. It is a prescribed textbook for Society of Actuary course 4 exam. Other than those guys taking this exam, DON'T TOUCH THIS BOOK.

P.S.: Many of those formulas in the books are wrong.

2-0 out of 5 stars Almost Unreadable
Murphy's Law of College Textbooks: When an author prepares a textbook on a topic he doesn't understand thoroughly, his work will only be understood by those readers who understand more about the topic than the writer . . . thus defeating the prime purpose of writing, which is to inform those who understand less about the topic than the writer.

The above statement applies to this textbook more than to any other that I have ever read in my life. Each chapter reduces to nothing more than an inscrutable collection of formulas. The authors do not provide even the slightest beginning of an insight to a student attempting to learn the material from this text. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars It serves the purpose.
In the past I have been quite critical regarding the quality of this book. I had found it tedious, overly descriptive, and lacking of significant examples.
In the meanwhile I have been using this book consistently because I needed information and verifications regarding the design of a challenging study. Well, I had to change my mind regarding my doubts and skepticism, and now I feel that I must vote in favor of the book.
Research is not exactly a walk on the beach, and this is certainly not a "beach" book. Research requires lots of patience, and very systematic people willing to devote much of their time for the sake of science. This book should be approached in a similar fashion, and with the intent and will to learn. If the reader establishes such a relation with this textbook, she/he will find most of her/his questions answered.
Aside the above praises, the author should consider to add practical examples to theory. This suggestion could be of great help to students willing to stay focused on a stimulating problem, and without ending up lost somewhere in the middle of the path.

Book Description

This is an expanded edition of the author's "Multivariate Statistical Analysis." Twice as long, it includes all the material in that edition, but has a more extensive treatment of introductory methods, especially hypothesis testing, parameter estimation, and experimental design. It also introduces time series analysis, decision analysis, and more advanced probability topics (see the accompanying table of contents). It has been used as a textbook at the graduate level at over 300 leading universities, in over a dozen academic disciplines, including education, business, and the social and health sciences. Like its abridged edition, it has been acclaimed for its lucid treatment of difficult statistical concepts. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Yo Baby, Sammy is Da' Hoochie Daddy
I just wish he would write a new book and focus it around SPSS. Although the book was published long ago, it is written to those struggling in their Multivariate classes. It is very clear and concise. I could have read this in high school and understood every word. The book is not focused on linear algebra or higher level mathematics. Instead, he provides a clear conceptual understanding of the major techniques. If you read this much, buy the book and read it. I guarentee that in no time you will be asking your prof questions that will boggle his or her mind and you will score you some brownie points. Further, after reading it you will love the subject and study stats naked. Even if you decide not to keep this as a desk reference, you can always sell it to another student and use the cash to buy some beer. After reading this review, I only ask that you write Dr. Sam and tell him to keep writing. Tell him that we will revoke his Visa if he doesn't. I love you SAM. Peace to the world. Long live Dallas, TX! This book helped me earn an A+ in advanced stats in the MBA that I am enrolled in.

4-0 out of 5 stars Statistical Analysis by Kachigan
This book has an excellent treatment of the various statistical methodologies. It has an easy-to-read treatment of basic probability with a gradual introduction into conditional prob. The coverage of mean, variance, weighted mean and the standard deviation is good. I was impressed with the explanation of the z statistic and hypothesis testing. The author had a good rendition of regression and correlation in single, as well as, multiple models. The style of this work is a belles lettres

treatment-almost akin to reading a story. Despite the simplicity, there is enough complexity for the quantitatively oriented readers. I would like to see an update of this book with some cross-referencing to the internet and more modern terminology. Despite the fact that it is an older work, there are few books which explain the material with the clarity of this text. Its weaknesses may be overcome by utilizing the REA Statistics or the Schaum's outline. This book is excellent for students who find math hard to comprehend. It serves all levels of students from the most advanced to the students requiring more time with the material.

5-0 out of 5 stars Afraid of Statistics? This book is for you!
This volume is an excellent introduction for someone who needs a conceptual understanding of statistics without the rigor or depth of a specialist. The presention is very non-technical with each new subject carefully developed. Ideal for the general business or social science undergraduate or anyone needing a brief and relatively painless encounter with a vital subject. ... Read more

Book Description

The main objective of Credit Risk: Modeling, Valuation and Hedging is to present a comprehensive survey of the past developments in the area of credit risk research, as well as to put forth the most recent advancements in this field. An important aspect of this text is that it attempts to bridge the gap between the mathematical theory of credit risk and the financial practice, which serves as the motivation for the mathematical modeling studied in the book. Mathematical developments are presented in a thorough manner and cover the structural (value-of-the-firm) and the reduced (intensity-based) approaches to credit risk modeling, applied both to single and to multiple defaults. In particular, the book offers a detailed study of various arbitrage-free models of defaultable term structures with several rating grades. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Could have been much better
In summary, this book is a disappointment. It presents a lot of material in an inaccessible way and doesn't provide solid explanations/proofs for a lot of material. It is also largley mathematical as opposed to the far superior 'Martingale methods in finance' by the same author, which takes the time to talk about applications to finance. As a credit derivatives quantitative analyst I was already familiar with the material in the text and that is the only reason why I understood it. It attempts to bridge the gap between theory and practice but in my opnion achieves neither.

2-0 out of 5 stars Another math book
This is another typical book written by mathematician, and for mathematician. What can one learn from this book? Basically not much. If you don't really know much about credit risk, you still won't know after much after you read the book. If you are a quant, this book definitely won't help you much.

Who might need this book? If you are a mathemtician with research interest in probablity, AND you like the book "Martingale Methods in Financial Markets" by Musiela and Rotkowski, you might want to buy this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for Graduate Business Students
This is one of the best text books in Business Statistics that I have come across which not only is theoretically excellent but also helps you master Excel. I think this author should seriously think of adding some more chapters like Conjoint analysis so that it is helpful to PhD students like me.
On a whole, an excellent text book for all graduate students. A must for all graduate business students.

4-0 out of 5 stars One of the best
I think this is one of the best books on this topic available. I have purchased many in an effort to merge statistical knowledge with the Excel application. While Excel is a powerful tool it can be tough to figure out how to harness all that power. It is an expertly written, no-frills book. The author clearly knows how frustrating most of the other Excel books on the market can be so he takes great care to walk you though the steps to success. A one star hit for a few noticeable things missing. One topic I really would like to have seen is creation of boxplots (very tough to do in Excel). A minor issue though because this book is loaded with great infromation and step-by-step approaches.

It is a bit pricey at [$], but I think well worth the price. If you can find it second hand then all the better because there is no data or sample disc included. I usually find the lack of a disc for such an expensive book annoying; however, there is a web site for you to download the data files referenced in the book so everything makes sense. As the title suggests the focus is business statistical applications. Bottom line: great book.

1-0 out of 5 stars As a class room text
I have been associated with using this book in a class room setting. The level of statistics is Ph.D and overall the class thought the book was written at a depth that was appropriate, but was written in such a way that it was not only hard to read but did not explain itselfin a logical means. The instructor often had to apologize for the short comings found in the book.
