If you're looking for a clear, easy to understand work, this is not for you. It seems the author fluctuates between writing for a population that is well versed in statistical understanding, to one that is just learning concepts and terms. The reader ends up being tossed around with too much information at times, and at other times too little information. There are many, many better works on these topics. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
I think this book is a great book for people understanding basic statistics and using SPSS. Actually, I also saw some reviewer didn't satisfy this book because it was too tough or could not cover more stuff. Honestly, I think this book already cover a lot of methods and I do not think one book can cover everything. Besides, if people need a specific method (for example: repeated measurement), I really do not think it is a right thing that they want to find every solutions from this book. It is unfair. Anyway, I still like this book because it is really a useful book.

5-0 out of 5 stars lifesaver
It had been a difficult couple of years. I had more life changes than most people have in 30 years, and not the least was that I had moved three times. In the middle of it all, I took multivariate statistics, a graduate course that I didn't have all the prerequisites for. I loved the course, but wow, was it hard. The sheer volume of the work nearly flattened me. Then I had an emotional meltdown right in the middle of the semester project, which was to apply seven multivariate techniques to the data I had collected for my own research.

My professor gave me an "incomplete," bless him, and I had the summer to finish the project. Then I moved again and lost everything -- class notes, textbook, everything.

Then I found this book, and it was all I needed to complete most of the project. Each section describes a statistical procedure clearly, with examples. It is easy to decide whether the technique is appropriate for your data, or, as in my case, how to use your data to try a technique. Then you walk through the technique, step by step, with pictures. The book gives you annotated printouts to help you find the most useful information in what SPSS gives you.

Then, my favorite part -- a sample results section in APA style. If I hadn't had this, I would never have finished by my revised due date, and would have had to repeat the course.

Downside -- it tells you what choices to make as you go through each analysis without fully explaining the options. That's good when you're in a hurry (and I was) but I would love to see these authors make an expanded version to use when I have more time. I would like their help with choosing additional graphs, for instance.

It doesn't help with non-SPSS techniques, of course, and I certainly could have used some help with Structural Equation Modeling. I have since bought Rex Kline's excellent book for that.

If you need to do some heavyweight statistics, you have SPSS, and you find the SPSS help file impenetrable (if you can understand it, you don't need it), then this book is for you. It's worth its weight in gold, and it's heavy.

5-0 out of 5 stars great spss book
Green, Salkind and Akey did a great job in introducing SPSS procedures to students.

The first strength of this book is its use of research scenarios, I found that most useful because sometimes students can't automatically relate some statistical techniques with the research question.

The second strength is the extensive coverage of variety of topics. It covers most of the SPSS procedures, from graphing to descriptive statistics and inferential statistics.

The third strength, the one that can be easily ignored, is the depth of its coverage of some advanced SPSS techniques. For example, the /lmatrix method in the 2-way ANOVA simple main effects and post-hoc contrasts situation is very advanced. Most SPSS books just use the traditional way to conduct the contrast, that is, using the omnibus sum square of error term and hand-computing the new F-value. In using /lmatrix, this process is greatly simplified and more accurate.

However, this shouldn't be the only statistics book at hand when you are trying to answer your research questions. An elementary statistics book is recommended as this book is not covering the computation and rational part of the analysis. ...

If you use SPSS, this book is a must. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great primer!
Having recently completed my MBA I look back and realize how much of a help this book was to me during my program. The author is able to take complex subject matter and reduce it to simple, unerstandable concepts. The chapter on TVM was especially helpful.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not a bad primer
As someone who is about to enter the MBA program at UC Berkeley--and one who was an English major as an undergrad--I heeded the advice of my admissions department and acquired a number of books on math and accounting fundamentals. This one was not nearly as dry as many of the others I've plowed through, and I think I've emerged with a pretty solid foundation of math skills after finishing the book.

However, I do have two qualms with this work: 1) There is little by way of practice exercises. An occasional "try this" problem pops up here and there, but the book does not offer a great deal of practice with the material. Instead it moves pretty quickly from one concept to the next, and as one who knew very little about such areas as discount rates and coupons, a few drills to drive this material home would have been very welcome.

2) This book also was not edited very well. Here and there you will find numerical mistakes, e.g., during a lesson it will tell you to enter "10" for the time period on you financial calculator. In such instances, a graphic is provided that shows what you should be keying into your instrument (say, 10 for the time period, 8 for the rate, etc.). However, the graphic does not always jibe with the text; where the text would say "enter 10" the corresponding area of the graphic might say "enter 11". This was very confusing at first because by following the graphic I was not reaching the answer that the text said I should. This happened at least eight times before page 100 and was extraordinarily annoying and really hindered progress for a bit until I realized that I had to double-check all of my data entry when I went by what the graphics said.

Otherwise, this book is worth a read. ... Read more

Book Description

In Australia you can register a business in 2 days, in Haiti, you need 203. In Denmark, you don't pay anything to start a business, while in Cambodia you pay 5 times income per capita. In Tunisia, you can enforce a contract in 7 days, while in Guatemala it takes more than 4 years.Credit information systems contain credit histories on almost every adult in New Zealand, Norway, and the United States, but cover less than 1 percent of the population in China, Nigeria and Pakistan. Resolving bankruptcy takes half a year in Ireland but more than 11 years in India.

These dramatic differences are found in a new, annual publication from the World Bank Group, Doing Business in 2004: Understanding Regulation, which provides readers with both qualitative and quantitative information on the business climate in over 130 countries.

New indicators on the regulatory environment for private sector development plus informative case studies of real-life exerpience make this a comprehensive resource on business environments throughout the world, the factors that influence them, and how conducive they are to private sector development.

Doing Business collects and analyzes data in over 130 countries, including OECD countries. The analysis is based on assessments of each country’s laws and regulations, with input from and verification by local experts who assist entrepreneurs in starting a business, hiring and firing workers, enforcing contracts, getting credit, and closing a business.

Doing Business in 2004 covers the fundamental aspects of a business life cycle from starting a business to bankruptcy and offers answers to these critical questions:

Which is the most expensive country for starting a business?
Which countries have the most rigid regulations on hiring and firing?
Which countries have themost extensive business entry procedures?
Why does heavy regulation lead to inneficiency and corruption?
What countries are most efficient in the area of contract enforcement?
How do clearly-defined property rights enhance prosperity?
What are the most successful regulatory models? Why?

An ambitious effort to study the determinants of private sector development, Doing Business is an invaluable reference for investors, economic advisers and policymakers, as well as scholars and students of international business and development economics. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Why are poor countries poor?
If you want to know the answer to this question, Doing Business in 2004 is your book.

Various eminent scholars have put forth theories as to why the rich countries get richer and the poor stay poor, including theories about culture, religion, geography, climate, trade openness, political regimes, and even accidents of history. Doing Business puts forth a compelling, and much simpler, story. Poor countries stay poor because their governments intervene excessively in business activity, driving entrepreneurs into informality. Growth is retarded, as is democracy, since many people are left in the fringes of economic and social life.

Lots of statistics on starting a business, hiring and firing workers, getting credit, and the like. Makes you appreciate how easy we have it here! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars True Outlier
This book was, without question, the worst math oriented book I have had the mispleasure of buying or reading. As mention in other reviews, the calculations are often off leading a reader who is reading for the purpose of developing concepts to waste substantial amounts of time. Since time is, among other things, money, this book is way to expensive, even if you were given your copy of it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible!!!! Don't waste your $$$$
I bought the book in preparation for a collegiate stats class. The content wasn't neither accurate enough, complete enough, or well written enough to be of any benefit.

It is almost impossible for me to put into words how awful this book was. How can you learn statistics when the examples are wrong? You spend hours pondering the equations, only to realize they are errors from the author.

The author should either stick to topics they know, or stop churning these books out so fast that the quality resembles rotten eggs.

This was a rare book that inspired enough anger to write such a disparaging review.

1-0 out of 5 stars Too many Errors
In preparation for business school I thought I'd brush up on my stats. But this book is making things even more confusing because of all the errors. Graphs are misplaced, calculations are off, and equations are wrong in way too many places. I wonder how this was ever published with so many mistakes. ... Read more

This introduction to statistics presents balanced coverage of both the theory and application of statistics and at the same time helps learners develop and enhance their critical thinking skills. It teaches readers how to analyze data that appear in situations in the world around them and features an abundance of examples and exercises—nearly all based on current, real-world applications pulled from journals, magazines, news articles, and commerce.Chapter topics cover statistics, data, and statistical thinking; methods for describing sets of data; probability; discrete random variables; continuous random variables; sampling distributions; inferences based on a single sample: estimation with confidence intervals; inferences based on a single sample: tests of hypotheses; inferences based on two samples: confidence intervals and tests of hypotheses; analysis of variance: comparing more than two means; simple linear regression; multiple regression and model building; categorical data analysis; and nonparametric statistics. For individuals who want to learn the fundamentals of statistics. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Introductory Text
Often using real-life examples taken from the media, McClave presents materials in an orderly fashion. Sub-sections are small (usually 5-6 pages) and problem sets are very nicely divided into Mechanics, Basic, and Advanced problems. My only dislike was chapter 3 counting rules, which seemed to be added without proper foundation. As both a student and now a tutor of this text, I find McClave's level of explanation sufficent for an introductory text.

1-0 out of 5 stars Is there a solution manual for this book????
First of all I am not a statistics major and although I find statistics to be a very interesting but challenging subject I am afraid to say that so far I have not been very successful .... I need extra help and I have not yet found the solution manual for this textbook and I am amazed at the fact that there isn't one ? Can anyone help me...

3-0 out of 5 stars Probablity and counting methods sections weak as usual,
Having taken an introductory college course that used this book up through most of chapter 9 (infrences based on two-samples using confidence intervals and hyopthesis tesing), I must say as usually happens in intro stat textbooks, the probablity chapter (3) is the weakest area, it needs more worded explinations on counting rules to clarify seemingly ambiguous situations. I've also heard professors complain that some of the examples used are over simplified and ignore obvious possiblities in the interpertations of results that add new dimentions to the problem. Not to mention the whole things needs a few more passes by some competent editors, as there's quite a few painfully obvious mistakes and misprints. Other than that, it's understandable enough, the applications problems are welcome, if occasionally flawed. For a more intensive introduction to general statistics, I suggest you seek a textbook that wasn't aimed at the widest possible market. (try the texts that say something like: statistics for engineers)

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent text for Advanced Placement statistics course
I was a member of the text selection committee that chose this book for our school division's advanced placement statistics course. It was a wise decision. The text is filled with contemporary examples that grab a student's attention. It is particularly good at using technology both in the exercises and in the discussion. My students were very comfortable with the reading level, and DID READ the text! I especially liked the project suggestions at the end of each chapter. The text's one weakness is the discussion and placement of the linear regression material. I needed a simpler approach and to do it much earlier in the course (after chapter 2). I had to supplement with material from other sources. However, this is a rather minor complaint compared to the text's many other strengths. ... Read more

Positive organizational change does not have to be planned or managed top down in a linear, urgent manner. Rather, it can be "unleashed" or discovered by helping people within organizations to identify their own best experiences in the past, and then use them to imagine, design, and bring into being the organization they want. The method is called "Appreciative Inquiry." The volume editors and their panel of experts examine how AI works in practice, and how its many (and often surprising) benefits can be realized in just about any organization. The result is a major explication and source book for leaders, change managers, and HR/OD specialists. ... Read more

Book Description

This quirky, fast-paced excursion through the world of statistics brings basic statistical concepts down to earth for general readersby showing how statistics are applied in our everyday lives. Drawing on such diverse examples as how pills are manufactured, elections are forecast, and chess tournaments are structured, psychologist Joseph Tal familiarizes readers with variables, means, medians, scales of measurement, sampling, estimating, and other stock-in-trade tools of the statistician. An unusually lively, informal review of statistical concepts Reading Between the Numbers:
• Features dozens of fascinating, often whimsical examples drawn from real life and literature, and 100 vivid graphs and tables
• Makes statistics fun and easy for general readers interested in numbers
• Is the ideal quick-study guide for those who need to learn statistical methods for their jobs
• Focuses on the psychology behind statistics, rather than problem-solving • Is based on the author’s popular professional workshops and seminars

5-0 out of 5 stars A New Angle on an Old Topic
As a professional chemist, I do not look back on the statistics courses I took with particular fondness. While I didn't find them very difficult, neither did I feel that provided me with any deep insights. It was with this, lukewarm attitude that I first picked up Reading Between the Numbers. And then I noticed Chandler's quotation in one of its early chapters. Statistics and Chandler?! This must be interesting. I purchased the book and wasn't disappointed. I found the statistical concepts explained in a way that is both simple and insightful. And the book reminded me that I should have reviewed the topic, which is so important for my work, long ago. But I found the book unique in other ways as well. First, the book is relevant - there is not one concept in it that is not in some way connected to the real world. The author takes special care to show how and why statistics is important in both our professional and everyday lives. The concepts in Reading Between the Numbers are related to applications and vice versa, so that I can now see both sides in a new and more interesting light. Above all, I now feel that the ideas underlying statistics are more accessible to me than before. Second, as in many fields, the more advanced topics are based on earlier ones. And throughout, that author provides reminders of the basics so that I didn't find myself having to return to earlier chapters in order to understand later ones. It seems to me that author was simply sensitive to the needs of nonprofessional readers, which is a rarity in professional books. Finally, Reading Between the Numbers a joy to read. It is written as fiction rather than science and is often very funny. That the author has a rather quirky sense of humor is clear. That he has succeeded in combining it with statistics seems to me no small achievement. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Beginner's book
This is a kindergarten TA book; that is, if one is just entering personal investing, it gives the basics, but for experienced TA investors it's not worth the price.

3-0 out of 5 stars Yet Another book on Technical Analysis
I'll keep this review short. This book is a pretty good introduction to classical techinical analysis (i.e,charting).If you believe in charting (or TA for that matter) as a forecasting tool then this book will be a good enough introduction for the novice. The book is very scant on the technical indicator side of TA and I disagree strongly with the remark made by the reviewer from New York,USA who states that "no real TA trader" uses indicators in trading decisions - from working on various trading desks in several of the largest investment banks in the world and from meeting scores of other traders - this guy is talking baloney. Some of the most profitable trading systems I've seen (ROI never less than triple digit percentages) are purely based on a mixture of advanced technical indicators and proprietary algorithms: there is no classical charting involved whatsoever.People who shun technical indicators are usually those who can just about cope with high school level maths. Moreover anyone who profits from classical TA,i.e, charting - and this is going to seem contentious - is I'm afraid guessing more times correctly than he is incorrectly. In fact there are circles in the professional trading community who genuinely believe that all classical TA is doomed for failure especially with todays fast electronic information systems. The only type of so-called "charting" that can be shown to work is that based on chaos theory ... So, for a novice - go read it as there's no harm done but don't expect to make consistent money using the ideas contained within or even with more 'advanced' classical TA books.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best introduction to technical analysis there is.
I was recommended to read this book during my induction period at a major investment bank. I studied Law at University so I had no idea what Technical Analysis was, until I read this astoundingly simple yet powerful book. Resistance & Support Levels are explained in a way that you will never forget the rationale for them after having read his chapter. This book has saved me from major embarassment in the markets!

5-0 out of 5 stars Well written, informative, and reader friendly.
In this book Michael Kahn clearly explains the practical aspects of technical analysis. I was very impressed by the author's strong financial background, and by his ability to explain technical information in a straightforward understandable way. I found myself looking back at previous successful and unsuccessful trades that I have made, and understanding the reasons behind the outcome. This book taught me principles that I can apply in the market immediately. I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great primer.
I have most of the popular TA books, but I saw this at a local store and bought it for a friend -- she doesn't have it yet. It's well written (as one would expect from a Brit.) and has more breadth than depth, as a primer should. You'll need other books of course, but this is the best introduction that I have encountered. One of its greatest virtues is that it does not dwell on technical indicators -- no real TA trader does. (Note that this is the exact opposite of "TA from A-Z", a book that's a terrible introductry text.)

Some of the topics covered are:

Charts, Trends, Patterns

Risk/Reward Setups

Intermarket Analysis

Candlesticks

Technical Indicators

Example Trades: Entries/Exits ... Read more

Book Description

Recent years have seen a number of introductory texts which focus on the applications of modern stochastic calculus to the theory of finance, and on the pricing models for derivative securities in particular. Some of these books develop the mathematics very quickly, making substantial demands on the readerOs background in advanced probability theory. Others emphasize the financial applications and do not attempt a rigorous coverage of the continuous-time calculus. This book provides a rigorous introduction for those who do not have a good background in stochastic calculus. The emphasis is on keeping the discussion self-contained rather than giving the most general results possible. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent - Good Mathematical Level
Does an excellent job of presenting the mathematics WITH RIGOR. The mathematics is more mature than Bingham & Kiesel, but the book is more accessible and far more readable than the similar texts by Karatzas & Shreve and Musiela & Rutkowski.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good book for Martingale approach
This book discusses the financial mathematics fromthe view of martingale approaches. It is good forsomeone who want to price derivatives by martingale approach. Unfortunately, this book lacks talking about exoticoptions like average options, lookback options and passport options. ... Read more
