Want to know why you are unhappy at work. OBTW this is Richard writing this...I am a Family Physician and I understand family systems. The foundation of the work compares organizational dysfunction to family dysfunction. It is a rational and easy to read book. It helped me understand the dynamics of my workplace and realize I needed to leave my job! Don't get me wrong....this is not the advise of the author. Once understanding the workplace is covered there are survival tips. For me I came to the conclusion there is little chance of recovery for the organization I worked with. Book Description

The complete blueprint for making the transition to the most exciting new growth area in psychotherapy today-corporate therapy

"For any psychologist and consultant seeking to apply his or her skills to the great challenges of the corporation, this book is invaluable. Lucidly written, concrete, specific, and practical."—Nathaniel Branden, PhD Psychologist, Management Consultant and author of The Six Pillars of Self-Esteem

"One of the few books that looks at organizational change through the prism of personal change. Transformation, that overused word, is given new meaning in this book as the integration between personal growth and deep cultural change."—Dr. Warren Bennis Distinguished Professor of Business Administration at USC and author of Creative Collaboration

"The job of a therapist is to create a context for change. One immensely important and often overlooked arena to help people in this era is to transform large corporate systems. Iris Martin draws a beautifully detailed map from the therapist's door into the corporate terrain. Sometimes poetic and always rich in examples, she helps readers shape their talents to transform corporations. Reading this book will greatly expand a sense of potential and provide specific guidelines for the journey."—Stephen and Carol Lankton Corporate consultants and authors of The Answer Within; Tales of Enchantment; Enchantment and Intervention in Family Therapy; and Practical Magic

From Couch to Corporation

The business world is experiencing the shock of rapid, unprecedented, all-encompassing change. It is a time of new paradigms and roles, and the accompanying emotional and psychological upheaval. Increasingly, corporations are finding that conventional change management consultants are incapable of dealing constructively with the larger psychological issues that underpin successful change and ultimately impact the bottom line. As a consequence, more and more business executives are coming to rely upon the services of consultant psychotherapists. Trained both in systemic and individual interventions, sensitive to developmental transitions, and skillful in maneuvering the system/psyche dynamic, the well-trained therapist is ideally suited to help organizations successfully maneuver through rapid corporate change.

But the transition from couch to corporation can be a harrowing one; complete with unforeseen pitfalls, unfamiliar rituals, and different values and priorities than private practice or traditional consulting. From Couch to Corporation is designed to help therapists and nonclinically trained change consultants make the transition comfortably and successfully into this new role. It provides psychotherapists with a complete blueprint for becoming successful corporate therapists.

Authored by the founder of one of North America's most prestigious psychologically based international consultancies to the Fortune 500, this book uses case studies and extensive real-world examples to illustrate what it takes to succeed in the corporate environment today.

From Couch to Corporation helps you expand your professional skills and take advantage of lucrative opportunities now available in the field of organizational consulting. As corporate executives recognize the impact of the pressures of the 1990s (downsizing, restructuring, and merging), they are turning with increasing frequency to psychologically skilled professionals for support and guidance. This book will arm you with the insights you need to enter this rapidly growing consultant specialty. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Idea is good, so why do I feel uncomfortable?
I read this book a while ago, after seeing an full-page ad in the Family Therapy Networker. I was favorably enough impressed with the book to call Iris Martin to inquire about her seminars, and spoke with her directly. I was sent flyers (which is good) in which there were testimonials. So I called some people listed, to find out how "competent" the seminars were. I spoke with three people (I don't have names), all of whom had taken the year long seminars, none of whom would recommend her. I decided to skip the workshops.
So, the book is OK as a coaching manual. It's a good introduction to coaching--probably as much as any book can be. Just don't expect the book to replace appropriate training, or to serve as a training manual.

5-0 out of 5 stars An extraordinary book!
Best book i've ever read detailing how psychology has transformed corporations across the globe. I loved the case studies of the crazy CEOs the best! It is all the rave of London.

3-0 out of 5 stars More Resources
Ms. Martin seems to be knowledgeable on the subject & takes many oportunities to sing her own praises. I wish she would've spent more time pointing reader into the direction of helpful resources, people, references, etc. I finished the text feeling I had lots of good ideas, but no where to go for further support and information. Finally, compared to other similar books, the purchase price of the book is extremely high. (Maybe she needs to help pay for all those houses she owns :-) )

3-0 out of 5 stars More "real time" perspective needed.
Martin's book provides an entry level overview of the complexities required to make a transition from conventional therapy to the more "bottom line" world of business. Martin illustrates the application of traditional therapy based skills but provides only a cursory view of real-time business issues - particularly as those issues apply to firms of more moderate size. There are also several instances in which Ms. Martin utilizes scenarios in which there appears to be clear "client/therapist - consultant/therapist" conflicts. Yet, she offers no hint of how these issues are addressed or resolved.

Martin's book is enjoyable introductory reading that needs to provide more substance if it is to have significant impact.

4-0 out of 5 stars Job Retraining for Therapists
Martin presents an interesting outline of how to take psychological therapy skills into the corporate environment. If you're a therapist considering taking on corporate clients for either mentoring or marketing work, this book is a must. Note, Martin assumes psychotherapy expertise. Her focus is on how to transfer it. She doesn't cover what techniques are useful in helping corportions, except incidentally. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A classic!
Nanci Lee Wydra's sociology/urban planning background lend a definite "feet planted on terra firma" approach to what is often presented as a rather out-of-reach, "woo-woo" topic. A regular speaker at American Institute of Architects (AIA) conventions, Wydra lends an intriguing contemporary, approachable, American (yet firmly grounded in Chinese tradition) sensibility to this fascinating ancient Chinese art. Also well worth reading are her follow-up books, Feng Shui in the Garden and Feng Shui in the Office.

2-0 out of 5 stars This book does not cover most important aspects
and I was disappointed after reading this. I wish it would have discussed more common problems that US residents face in their homes and apartments. Could have been written with more diagrams and illustrations.

5-0 out of 5 stars Splendid, simple to use, logical Feng Shui guide that works!
As an American who spends lots of time in Asia, I was thrilled to find a book like this to recommend to my friends. Nancilee Wydra obviously studied Feng Shui's many aspects. She wrote a guide that is easy to use and logical in its approach to this age-old oriental discipline. The author obviously cares about the importance of both our home and business environments. By following her teachings, I really feel that my surroundings have indeed made my life more successful, serene and comfortable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to follow advice for novices in feng shui.
Simple and cost-effective solutions for poor feng shui in homes and offices. Easy to follow, the book is good for those with little knowledge of feng shui. The reader can grasp an immediate (elementary) understanding of feng shui, allowing the reader to begin using this wonderful philosophy right away to help make positive changes in his/her personal environment.

2-0 out of 5 stars Briefly gives the reader brief outlines
This book is so simple anyone could understand it. But for a reader really wanting to understand the ancient philosophy behind Feng Shiu it leaves you sadly lacking, as does Karen Kingston's book Creating Sacred Space with Feng Shui. The most comprehensive reading on this subject actually can be found in Nancy SantoPietro's book Feng Shui: Harmony by Design. I recommend this last book mentioned to anyone, beginner or advanced alike. None of the others even come close to its understanding of the subject matter and explaining hows and whys in the correct application of this ancient art. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Comment on "Calm At Work"
Do you think you have so many things to do but do not have enough time? Do you feel stressful in meeting lots of deadlines? Do the changes make you feel anxious? If yes, you must read this book ¡§Calm at Work¡¨ since these are parts of stress, and this book can help you to deal with these stress. This book offers some simple and straightforward techniques for overcoming stress on the job and keeping people relax and calm at work.

The author stated what stress is first, and he mentioned the seven steps to be calm, including 1) take this first step, 2) life-changing choices, 3) employers to choose from, 4) sanity-saving understandings, 5) life-enriching pieces of advice, 6) areas where you can make a difference, and 7) causes of stress in the workplace. The seven main causes of stress in workplace are time, control, self, social, change, physical and lifestyle habits. After mentioning the causes of stress, the author suggested a series of solutions for each cause. Therefore, when people know their causes of stress, they can read that solutions accordingly. For me, most of my stresses come from time and self since I always think that I do not have enough time to do my things. For time, the author suggested some solutions such as control time, depressurize deadlines and end procrastination. For self, the author suggested planning to be calm, a positive change, dealing with worries and drive control. These advices and solutions are practical and useful for me to reduce stress.

Apart from specific solutions for each cause, the author also mentioned some general suggestions for dealing any type of stress, including deep breath, use of subconscious, doing exercises, taking a rest, planning, thinking positively and to be more get involved and enthusiastic when doing something. These techniques are really useful for everyone to overcome the stress especially for those who are working.

After reading this book, I have tried some of the techniques for dealing the stress and they really help. Whenever I feel stressful, I would have a deep breath for calming down myself first, and I breathed deeply and slowly. Sometimes, I would also do some simple exercises for instant relief from stress. I have learned to write down my plan, I wrote down all of the works, prioritized them and end procrastination, so I could finish the work more efficiently and also make sure that the most important things are done. I have changed my attitude, I think more positively than before and be more optimistic and enthusiastic. This makes me live more happily and do things more efficiently with less stress. I would try to take a rest which is about 30 minutes in a day even it is a busy day, in the rest time, I would stop doing anything. I think most of these techniques are practical and can reduce my stress level and also make me to be more relaxed.

In facing this challenging and highly competitive world, I think everyone would be under stress, therefore, I strongly recommend this book to all people. After reading this book, you¡¦ll feel relaxed, positive and fulfilled. I believe that everyone can benefit from reading this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comment
¡§Calm at Work¡¨ is a book which suggests many useful ways for keeping calm and reducing stress. It mentioned seven main causes of stress in workplace, including time, control, self, social, change, physical and lifestyle habits, and the author advised a series of solutions for each cause of stress. In order to help the readers to find the solutions in a more efficient way, author used a special method. At the end of each section, an ¡§index card¡¨ would be inserted, which contains information that guides the readers to find out the solutions. As some of the solutions are useful for different causes of stress, this book organized in such a way is concise and precise.

Breathing calm is very important. The author used a lot of effort in explaining how to breathe in a right way. It is because the calm breathing method is useful in many other calm keeping solutions. Besides, author suggests readers to write down their plans and prioritize their working schedules. Those methods are very practical for busy people; it can help them to complete their work on schedule. Other solutions like tools of subconscious and some simple exercises are all very useful and easy to carry out in our daily life.

There are some parts in this book which impressed me most. Those include the causes and solutions of time and social. For time, as we cannot control the time to pass, the things that we can control are the things we need to do and the time we need to do the things. Therefore, we must have a good time management. Besides, author suggested the readers to take off their watches, so as to make them more relax. It is because people will refer to their watches frequently, and it increases their pressure. If we can work without that pressure, we would be more relaxed. On the other hand, for social, author suggested the readers to develop a new relationship with those trouble colleagues. If those colleagues are helpful and constructive to our plan, we can build up good relationship with them, for those who will obstruct our plan, we have to avoid frequent contact with them. But in my opinion, in the real life workplace, we are not able to control who are my work partners, therefore, this method would be good, but not very practical.

In short, this book gives me lots of ideas to relax under stressful environment. Although, the author emphasize on the pressure from workplace, most of the solutions are helpful and practical for everyone. The book reminds me procrastination will increase the pressure level, so a well planning for myself is important. Moreover, the attitude of me is also critical. It is because building up a positive attitude would make me become optimistic and I understand that a happy person can live with less stress.

This book is good to everyone, if you are under great pressure, and seeking ways for relax, ¡§Calm at work¡¨ would be a book suitable for you.

I just wanted to write a quick review to let readers know that I recommend this book highly! At the end of 1999, I was working in a very stressful environment. Five people were working in a very small space manning an online retail store during holiday season! Yikes!

Withink two days of reading the book, I not only was able to cut my own stress down substantially, but some of the techniques I used (the positive contribution cup) changed the entire office environment for the better.

I cannot recommend this book enough, especially for people working in the highly stressful high tech field.

Read, enjoy and relax!

The content is very practical and easy applicable in real life. I have read many books on the subject of handling emotions and the techniques the author mentions are familiar. However he is able to add something extra what makes the technicques easier to use. His words are well chosen and full of clear images. It's a very good book in my opinion. ... Read more

Book Description

Workplace Bullying is the deliberate, repeated mistreatment of good employees by harassers who ignore all traditional boundaries of gender, race, age, and organizational rank. The authors, in this book and through the national nonprofit organization--Campaign Against Workplace Bullying--have introduced the term to working Americans.BullyProof Yourself At Work is the first American book and the first volume in The Work Doctor's Bullying series focused exclusively on the topic of workplace bullying.

About one-fourth of all employees are affected directly by a bully's tactics. BullyProof Yourself At Work! is written for individuals who face tyrants at work who threaten their sanity, careers, and relationships with co-workers and friends. The first steps teach how to recognize bullying when it is happening and how to stop being surprised by the fundamentally different way bullies and their Targets (the recipients) think, act and see the workplace. Eight chapters are devoted techniques that can prevent or stop the self-defeating cycle into which Targets regretfully fall.

Quotes from readers:

"It's like being set free from prison. God bless you and your work!"

"You've helped me to stand up to bullies for months. I'm teaching my son bullyproofing before he enters the workforce."

"Discovering the Campaign and reading your material is one of the best things to happen in my life."

"I'm so glad that you both exist! I know my battle has just begun and I willface many new challenges, but know that I have The Work Doctor on my side. I WILL SURVIVE!"

"You do not know how much I appreciate you help, advice, information and especially emotional support." ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars bullies (liars) are everywhere
Bullies get what they need personally because one of their major needs is to look good at the expense of others, especially in a
workplace that allows such behavior to multiply. Government organizations where executives prefer to isolate themselves from frontline workers are particularly vulnerable since the lies that bullies pass on to executives are accepted as de facto truth. Managing by walking around is unheard of in these places.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent theoretical foundation
This book provided the one thing I found missing in all the similar books I have read: a valid theoretical explanation of why bullying occurs -- the characteristics and dynamics of both the targets and the bullies. Essentially, bullies and targets (victims of bullies) come in all varieties, except that targets have one quality in common: they foster collaboration. Bullies, in turn, also have one trait in common: they are hierarchial. This leads to the inevitable crash when the bully percieves that the target is "giving away" the very things that the bully wishes to "sell". The driving force behind bulling is the need to control other people. The vulnerability of targets lies in their incomprehension of why anyone would want to control others when they could instead cooperate with them. These mental models are fundamentally incompatible. In addition, bullies are comfortable using aggression to gain control while cooperators are not. Bullies want to crush targets, targets want to "get along" with bullies. This really excellent book explains the basis for the mental models, the dynamics of the interaction between bullies and targets, and offers targets strategies for survival.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Great Addition to any "Work Abuse " Toolkit
This book helped to "fill in the holes" for me. I am a manager who has witnessed innumerable incidents aptly described in this book. There are no "official" guidelines or information available from my employer for addressing this phenomenon...if it doesn't fall within the classical "legal" definition of harassment...many of my peers either ignore the behavior, engage in the behavior or collude with the "system" to perpetuate it. This book and another great book, "Work Abuse: How To Recognize and Survive It" by Judith Wyatt and Chauncey Hare have been invaluable aids in helping me to identify and implement actions that have strengthened my management skills, by encouraging change and authentic healing.

5-0 out of 5 stars An engaging mix of compassion and fight
This is one of two excellent new books dedicated to the memory of Heinz Leymann, a Swedish psychologist who died in January 1999, after having spearheaded the greatest advance of the past twenty years in the study of work. The other book, also available from amazon, is entitled Mobbing: Emotional Abuse in the American Workplace, by Noa Davenport, Ruth Distler Schwartz, and Gail Pursell Elliott. The books are alike in honoring Leymann's memory in the best possible way: by extending his research and presenting the results in a way that will be of enormous practical benefit to both employers and employees. Leymann's breakthrough was against the background of current preoccupations on sex, race, religion, sexual orientation, and the other officially recognized bases of unfair treatment in the workplace. Some argue now for expanding the list of shibboleths to include employees' criminal records and political beliefs as illegal grounds on which to exclude or punish them. Leymann managed to get beyond this current way of thinking, with its fixation on grounds of ill-treatment, and to focus instead on the fact of ill-treatment, whatever the apparent ground. The phenomenon he conceptualized and studied was the humiliation and destruction of an employee by the employer. He called this process mobbing or bullying: intense aggression against an individual by managers or co-workers, aimed at crushing the individual utterly and eliminating him or her from the group. Leymann's conceptualization, which Bullyproof powerfully brings home to American readers, shifts attention from real or imagined reasons for cruelty to cruelty itself. Quoting extensively from first-person accounts, the Namies show that bullying may occur not just because the target is of the wrong sex or race but because the target is talent, successful, or cooperative. They shift attention from some purported defect in the target to the bully's inordinate need to control and dominate--to the point of destroying one who will not submit. Harassment, as used in the subtitle of this book, need not have anything to do with sex. It means picking on or ganging up on somebody, little by little dragging that person down, often for no other reason than that the perpetrators get a kick out of it. Bullying inflicts huge costs on both the target and the organization. It represents a diversion of time and energy away from getting the job done to putting some worker down. It is the substitution of power-mongering and one-upmanship for efficient and productive work. Bullyproof is an engaging mix of compassion and fight. Far from being detached, ivory-tower researchers, the Namies are determined not just to understand the mini-holocausts taking place every day in American workplaces but to prevent them. The splendid cover illustration shows a bullied worker effectively wielding a shield against flames of destruction exhaled from the bully's mouth. This book is for anybody employed anywhere. Even if you yourself are not being bullied now, you probably know somebody who is, and who will thank you a thousand times for the loan of this helpful guide to resistance and mental health. There is practical advice, well grounded in research, on every page. This book is part of the authors' international Campaign against Workplace Bullying, a movement that deserves wide support.

5-0 out of 5 stars A real contribution to everyone who works for a living.
This book accomplishes what many of us have tried to do for most of our working lives: articulate why work so often causes suffering and reduces productivity. Usually, we know someone is bothering us at work, but we have troublre articulating exactly what it is. This is especially so when the problem is the boss, and when we seem to feel that the boss has the right to bully us. In this book, bullies will recognize themselves and will learn for the first time what behaviors they should quit imposing on others. Targets and victims of bullies will find out what to do to protect themselves. Ruth and Gary Naimie have taken the giant and original first step of identifying this national problem, analyzing it, and telling us how to cope with and ultimately solve this hurtful and wasteful problem. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A classic
Healthy Work is a classic--though currently under-appreciated--work on organizations. It is a book of great breadth and richness that deserves more than one reading. Healthy Work is a "must read" for those concerned with creating healthy organizations. It describes the demand-control model, which has had a huge influence on research on work and health. The model was prompted by Karasek's concern about the consequences of demand-control imbalances in the workplace. Karasek and Theorell provide a vision of humane organizations in which employees can master challenges and experience personal growth. Healthy Work is not an easy read, but it is a "must read" for OD practitioners, OB professors, and those concerned with improving life in organizations. It challenges us to improve the "psychic prisons" in which many employees--unfortunately--spend much of their waking hours. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars good way to look at your work spaces
i have used this to think through the offices my husband and i use, in our home offices and at our public offices at work.

good ideas are presented in a "bullet point" manner, i.e., skip over that page if it does not pertain to your situation.practical, cut to the chase, way to look at this area of your life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Gift and Helpful Tips
I think this book makes a wonderful gift and it is also great for easy fixes, which actually DO work. This book is not intended for those who wish to study the subject in depth, but it is not trying to be that kind of a book. It is a little book of feng shui, and gives you pointers on how you can make sure your feng shui at work is protected... and gives you tips on how to enhance for good feng shui.

For those who want the subject in more depth, go for Lillian Too's Encyclopedia of Feng Shui or the Complete Illustrated Guide to Feng Shui. These are her staples and are great reference manuals.

Book Description

Career Success/Personal Stress begins from a refreshingly commonsense-but frequently overlooked-set of assumptions about stress: that stress is the rule nowadays, and is virtually wired-in to the majority of work environments; that the notion that stress can be eliminated from one's routine is unrealistic; that stress can actually be used to advantage if properly managed; and that a stress-sensitive lifestyle is learnable. Building on these four cornerstones, stress specialists Leatz and Stolar offer a treasury of fascinating findings and high-payoff prescriptions including: How to perform a personalized stress check; How to recognize common physiological stress patterns and interpret common physiological reactions to stress; How to understand and cope with 12 major job stressors (many of which have only surfaced in the past 3 years); How to know if stress is affecting your sexual performance and what can be done about it; How to evaluate the mutual effects of stress, diet, and exercise; How to spot and cope with a wide array of stress-impacted symptoms and illnesses-from backaches, panic attacks, and dermatitis to teeth-grinding, sleeping problems, and sexual dysfunction, plus many others; How to make lifestyle changes that render stress manageable for positive results. In addition, the authors introduce the intriguing new concept of a Type C personality, as distinguished from the stress-vulnerable Type A and stress-avoider Type B personalities. Statistically validated through their own research, the Type C construct illustrates how real-world people who are already functioning successfully in the new environment do it-and it provides a model for the most desirable qualities and behaviors for optimal stress management. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Learn the art of Communicating.
Well, Well, I find this book 'terrific' to say the least.
The arrangement of text(especially 'capitals') is simply wonderful. I learnt more and educated myself in the process. It was more like reading a novel. I would highly recommend you to read this book, but keep it away from the sight of 'Co-workers/Boss(for your own good!). I wish I could have a video of this book, I mean it would definitely help. Words once uttered, cannot be taken back, so it is better to polish it so that it conveys the intended meaning and gets the appropriate results when dealing with not only 'Difficult people' but everybody.
After some time, you will enjoy working with 'Difficult people', because they are usually the ones who have talents that have been overlooked. Take heart.

3-0 out of 5 stars Only an OK book
There is some useful information in the book. The book is divided into many different situations and types of people and this is useful. However many sections are very shallow and it seems that the sections that deal with the most difficult people tend to blame it on the recipient rather than the perpetrator. Also, there is a tendency to helplessness in the face of the worst offenders, i.e. there is nothing you can do. In reality this is seldom the case. But the desired actions may be dramatic and have far reaching consequences. It seems the book is written so as to offend none when some should be offended.

3-0 out of 5 stars Read "Winning with Difficult People" instead
Try reading "Winning with Difficult people" instead of this book. This book did tell me about certain types of people and how to deal with them, but it didn't go into deal about why they are the way they are to others.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good understanding for what motivates difficult people
I bought this book when it first came out over a decade ago. It's a classic (or should be). It covers the behavior in groups (e.g. "Pushy/Presumtious People", "Exploitive People") and further divides each group into how it is manifested in Bosses, Peers, and Suborbdinates. The author is very perceptive in describing the patterns, what insecurities drive people to behave that way, and methods for dealing with them. The advice is very practical and appropriate to the case. Sometimes it's on the order of "give them some attention to get a return", sometimes it's "define your boundaries" and sometimes it's "this is toxic, walk away." ... Read more
