Beyond Work-Family Balance, by academic researchers Rhona Rapoport, Lotte Bailyn, Joyce K. Fletcher, and Bettye H. Pruitt, grew out of a decade-long search for ways to restructure business life that would "enhance organizational effectiveness while making the workplace more equitable and improving the quality of working people's lives." While few would oppose such goals at face value, their full attainment has nonetheless remained elusive as business pressures increase and unrealistic gender assumptions--like institutional refusal to acknowledge the increasing emergence of women as primary breadwinners--remain entrenched in our corporate cultures, structures, and practices. This book advances a conceptual framework for appropriate organizational change that is tied directly to the dual agenda spelled out in the two-pronged premise of its subtitle: Advancing Gender Equity and Workplace Performance. With no one-size-fits-all solution possible for such complex issues, the authors draw on related studies in a dozen different workplace settings to instead present a starting point "so that organizations so inclined and the people in them can embark on a similar journey" of exploration and solution. The result will be of interest to anyone who agrees that such change is badly needed and long overdue. --Howard Rothman ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Gender equity and the bottom line
As a coach and consultant to attorneys struggling to make
the business case for effective and usable work-life practices, I found this book to be an invaluable tool and resource.
Law firms are bastions of gendered assumptions about ideal
workers. The insatiable demand for ever-increasing billable hours makes developing and maintaining a normal life outside of work an extraordinary challenge, particularly for women attorneys. "Beyond Work-Family Balance" clearly articulates the tacit gendered assumptions underlying current law firm work practices and effectively establishes the connection between gender equity and workplace performance.
I wish the managing partners of every law firm would read this.
I'll refer all of my coaching clients to it. At least it will
confirm that it's the system - not them - that has the problem.

5-0 out of 5 stars The business case
The long-awaited, "Beyond Work-Family Balance," is finally out! Many of us have been waiting for
the better part of a decade for a full treatment of the worklife
integration experiments at Xerox and elsewhere, and this is it! If you are
looking for a book to get you charged up about the business case for
work/life programs, go elsewhere. If you want the most honest, detailed
account of attempts to make the business case successful in practice, this
is the book for you. The basic argument starts with integration: we cannot
improve things unless and until we are willing to bring the public sphere
of employment and the private sphere of home together, a process that can
range from embarrassing to painful. The second ingredient is the dual
agenda of improving business performance and gender equity. The tightrope
involved in carrying this dual agenda into the workplace is what makes the
book interesting, powerful, and realistic. The authors argue that an
interactive research approach is required to make the dual agenda work,
with the researchers listening and learning almost as much as the
participants in the business world, a process that requires constant
feedback, reflection, and communication. Indeed, an entire chapter is
devoted to lessons for research teams wishing to pursue research while
applying a dual agenda to themselves. Sometimes the dual agenda succeeds,
and employees and managers learn how to improve the functioning of
workplaces for all participants (yes, stockholders even benefit). But the
fundamental honesty of the authors leaves us wondering: is it worth it?
Fortunately, I think the answer is yes, but the authors leave us in no
doubt as to the incredible amount of work required.
The one question left hanging concerns unions, since the parallels
between many labor-management cooperation initiatives and the integration
approach are multiple (if not perfect), but unions are not mentioned.
Well, that leaves something for the next book. Incredibly well-written,
brutally honest, and extremely insightful! A must-read for academics and
practitioners alike.

5-0 out of 5 stars A groundbreaking book
This is a book we have all been waiting for. After decades of reflection and debate about how best to develop innovative, high performance organisations, on the one hand, and how to enhance gender equity and work-personal life integration on the other hand, this book tells us that the two are not only compatible, but mutually dependent. Written in a non technical and thoroughly engaging style, the book argues that work practices and norms which are inequitable are also ineffective. The authors have the rare knack of presenting a deep and thoughtful analysis in such a clear way that their argument seems simple and obvious.

The heart of the problem lies in the gendered assumptions that underpin many everyday working practices . The authors point out that assumptions based on traditional masculine values and life situations include the defining of commitment in terms of long working hours that preclude time for family or personal life, and the valuing of stereotypical male competencies, such as heroic action and firefighting, above interpersonal and other competencies regarded as more “feminine”. Drawing on action research in a range of organisations they demonstrate how these assumptions and the practices that follow from them, undermine effective performance, but are so taken-for-granted that we rarely question them.

What really distinguishes this book is that the authors go beyond identifying problems to provide a well tried method for bringing about meaningful change It does not offer one size fits all solutions but does provide a process for reaching tailor made solutions. Their method of Collaborative Interactive Action Research (CIAR) includes examining working practice and the assumptions that sustain ineffective practices and gender inequity and then thinking collaboratively with work teams to come up with innovative solutions to what they call the “dual agenda”. The case studies used throughout the book are based on experience in a wide range of organisations so that everybody should be able to identify with at least some of the situations described. This should leave limited room for the traditional cry of “it won’t work here”.

For all those readers who are interested in organisational performance and change and in gender equity, whether or not they have already made the connections between the two, this book will make compulsive reading. Even the most cynical will find it difficult to totally disregard the central message that gender equity and effective performance go hand in hand.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book! New Thinking!
This book provides a powerful example that thinking out of the box can open up a new perspective on a conflict that had seemed to be unsolvable. And this book is an example that academic research can lead to applicable and practical results.

The conflict between work life and family life is as old as the industrial age. We all know it and we all experience it in our daily life. The four authors, all of them experienced researchers, have or most of their lives tried to better understand this conflict and its underlying story. But with this book they went a step beyond traditional approaches. Based on case studies they unveil a number of assumptions on which this conflict is based. They challenge norms and traditional thinking. Career choices, life opportunities, values and reward structures are based on a specific western type of thinking that historically has been shaped by white, married, middle-class men. The result is a system that dominates most of our work-life and effects our private life, that of men and women. The authors question this system from two angles. First, they analyze the often painful struggle between having a life and a career, and how individuals are trying to balance the two. Second, they show that the widely believed assumption: "this system is bad for us but good for the organization" does not hold true. Organizations and work processes are often inefficient and the individual behavior that is based on these norms don't move the whole organization forward.

This book does not make the mistake of ending up with an easy answer. The authors identify leverage points for significant change in organizations. The book has helped me to rethink basic assumptions about work and organizations in the industrialized world and to see new potential for change. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A winner with both analysis and strategies
The author has done an excellent job of providing useful tools, as opposed to the platitudes and vague concepts that plague many self-help books. There is a good balance between analyzing the causes of behavior and providing ideas and strategies for changing it. Of particular note is the useful distinction drawn by the author between procrastination and problems with decision-making.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very useful and motivating self-improvement guide
Ms. Lively is a consultant and speaker on the subjects of procrastination, workplace decision-making and clear-thinking skills. She has also written an eBook called Managing Information Overload.

What makes this book a standout among procrastination books, in my opinion, is its offering of an alternate reason for being stalled in achieving your goals other than procrastination, which the author defines as knowing what to do but not doing it. That other reason for being blocked is that you are clueless about what to do because you lack adequate information or training. For this insight alone, and the accompanying advice for effectively scaling both these types of walls, this book is well worth reading.

Other reasons I gave the book 5 stars include the following:
(1) The author has a lively voice and avoids preaching.
(2) The book has a clear, readable Table of Contents and an Index, making it easy to look up what especially interests you or to go back over particular points in the book at a later time for further inspiration.
(3) While I often get irritated by the "homework" in self-help books, this author is, thankfully, far less cutesy and/or patronizing than most authors in this genre. One caveat: I would recommend that, if you are actually going to give these exercises a try, you get yourself a notebook (either spiral or loose-leaf) to keep your scribblings together. If you just grab up loose pieces of paper as the author suggests, you are going to end up with dozens of messy pieces of paper floating around on your already cluttered desk (procrastinators tend to be very sloppy as well as slow to get going!).
(4) This book isn't primarily geared toward teaching you how to make good choices, set goals, and gain useful problem-solving skills. As the author openly admits, there are many other books on the market specifically aimed at those topics. However, since the author asserts that in order to come out of procrastination, it is crucial to first figure out exactly =why= you are procrastinating, she very appropriately covers these important topics in a solid, basic, understandable way.

4-0 out of 5 stars Don't hestitate! Read this book now.
This book is very suitable for two types of people. The first type is they don¡¦t know what to do. And the second type is they know what to need to do, but don¡¦t do it. If you are one of them, you must read this book immediately. You may not change your lazy behavior after reading this book, but you will know the right direction of being a person who know what to need to do and do it right now. Also, the author divided the content into two parts, one is for the first type of people, another is for the second type. Therefore, you can read the part you need. It can save your time also because of the clear structure. Moreover, many useful tips and techniques are given in each chapter. Apart from teaching the readers the way to overcome procrastination, the author draw out the benefits and drawbacks when you are procrastinating. Certainly, it is not enough to know what to do, it is useless if you don¡¦t do it. So, this book will help you a lot if you want to be an active person.

2-0 out of 5 stars Procrastinator's Guide Review
This book has many good ideas but it is not well organized for procrastinator's. The content deals more with how to be successful at work than dealing with procrastination. Even then, there is a lack of cohesiveness. Author has good ideas but lacks a central point of view.

Really doesn't tackle deep issues surrounding procrastination at work. Serves as a pep talk for dealing with different work problems.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended!
Peg Pickering presents a standard, basic time and self management guide, which is particularly helpful for disorganized people. She teaches you how to organize your work and yourself. Many of the guidelines will be familiar and seem like plain common sense. However, she presents the material in a well-organized brass-tacks way, and her summaries at the end of each chapter are particularly useful highlights of the main points. She also includes a number of charts, forms and quizzes that provide helpful advice for organizing your life and work. Additionally, the book is formatted in a reader-friendly way, with boxes and frequent headlines and type-changes that make it easy to skip ahead to the topics that interest you most. We recommend this good solid guide, particularly for office workers, managers and business professionals.

4-0 out of 5 stars money well invested

5-0 out of 5 stars From reducing stress to creating more leisure time
How To Make The Most Of Your Workday appears in its second edition to provide an updated set of considerations to making the most of one's workday, from reducing stress and increasing efficiency to creating more leisure time and learning how to allocate time. From meetings and phone calls to priorities and goals, How To Make The Most Of Your Workday covers a range of strategies.

4-0 out of 5 stars Delivers on the Title's Promise
This book contains a somewhat eclectic mix of project planning tips, motivational quotes and anecdotes, and genuine get-your-ass organized tips.

The way this is written, you can read it in one of two ways. You can skim this quickly and extract a good dozen tips for implementation at work tomorrow, or you can take your time, fill out all of the worksheets contained inside, and really examine your work habits thoroughly. Many of the tips inside are really great for simply getting organized at work: the tickler-file concept, the two different methods for to-do lists, to name just a couple.

The writing isn't superb but it does a good job of servicing a wide audience. Whether you're a seasoned manager with some bad habits to examine or a recent college graduate with a procrastination streak to kick, this book will help you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great time management resource book.
I first read this book about three years ago and I find myself constantly going back to it for personal tips on time management, but more importantly I use all or parts of it as a training resource for subordinates with time management problems. It's a no nonsense book, laid out logically, easy to read, and contains some great exercises to help drive home different points. You can't go wrong purchasing this book. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars okay but not that useful
With 500 tips I have to admit that I found some good ideas but I didn't like the book. Whether he meant to or not Aslett comes off as that guy everyone in the office can't stand. Some of his ideas simply don't stand up to workplace reality and others were clearly written by a guy who hasn't sat in a cubicle in many years.

4-0 out of 5 stars Lots of good ideas to be gleaned; a few misguided
Decent book, not quite up to par with Aslett's best books. Plenty of good ideas for minimizing overhead at work and concentrating on the "real" task that needs to get done. I take some exception at his recommendations to work evenings and weekends when needed - I think most purchasers of the book want to simplify their work life so they can get out of the office on time and enjoy the rest of their life. i.e. working overtime is one of the biggest components of a *non-simple* work life. ... Wow, what a wonderful and insightful book from Mark Breier! Mark, Puts you in the executives hot seat in the decision making process of companies such as Amazon and Beyond.com go ahead Mark!

2-0 out of 5 stars This is a pre dot-bomb era title
This book was written in and about the time before the dot-com's collapsed. I was hoping to get some real advice on running an internet enabled group, and was very dissapointed to find that this book is basically a day in the life of a work-a-holic .com CEO before his bubble burst.

This is not a book I could suggest is worth your time or money if you are looking to get real ideas and lesson learned for use in your own business or job. Some pre dot-bomb books have lasted the test of time in the couple years since...this one has not. "The Customer Revolution" is a good example of a pre dot-bomb tech/business book that is still worth reading or listening to. Go look at that, or the many other still relevent books. Move along...nothing to see here folks.

1-0 out of 5 stars useful (mostly for shallow readers) but also irritating
This book exemplifies the Internet Bubble with a capital B: 95% marketing hype 5% substance. The author gloats about such practices as having the company's system admins optimize the email login services so that he could get his mail few seconds faster. No mention of how much that actually cost the company. Another interesting story, how while Breier was making a presentation to a brick and mortar company (read value oriented) he was criticized by an older manager as not having anything substantive to offer. Breier's explanation: some people just don't get it. P>This is one of the most irritating books I have ever read. The author never takes a break from selling or hyping you -- a perfect example of rich x-Stanford students selling internet hype in Silicon Valley, making millions doing it, and leaving average Joe holding the bag. It all sounds great until you actually start thinking about it. What is scary is how other CEO's had endorsed this book while beyond.com was trucking along; a lot of CEOs who must have a lot of eggs on their faces.

4-0 out of 5 stars The E-mail & Meeting chapters are worth the money alone
You don't have to own a company or need venture money to realize how valuable this book is. Times have changed, and you have to be organized and move fast to succeed. "It's survival of the fastest." This book is a quick read and a must read for any manager that is busy, uses E-mail & has meetings.

4-0 out of 5 stars The 1 Minute Review of The 10 Second Internet Manager
The past few years have really zoomed along, haven't they? The Internet and technology have transformed business and the workplace in ways previously unimaginable. Business owners, managers, and front-line employees have to work differently now to compete and win in the global marketplace.

Mark Breier is an e-commerce consultant in California who has successfully built web sites for Amazon.com and Beyond.com. He has written a contemporary and useful update of the classic best-selling book "The One Minute Manager" for the rush-rush Internet age marketplace.

"The 10-Second Internet Manager" is (appropriately) a quick and easy read. The book covers topics such as the price of not acting quickly, the proper uses of e-mail, and servicing and getting feedback from customers. It also covers hiring and firing employees, efficient use of meetings, the importance of a strong brand, and (now especially pertinent!) financial and financing matters for technology and internet-related firms.

Old or New Economy business owners, managers, and front-line employees will find Breier's accounts compelling and useful in their everyday work lives. Book Description

To be most effective, leaders must move beyond time management to time mastery. Time managers are reliant on clocks and calendars; time masters develop an intuitive sense of timing. Time managers see time as a fixed, rigid constant; time masters view it as relative and malleable. Time masters have what John Clemens and Scott Dalrymple call the critical skill of "temporal intelligence."

Based on more than four years of research, Time Mastery includes dozens of examples of leaders whose temporal intelligence has helped them achieve business breakthroughs at organizations such as GE, 3M, Staples, and Dell. Readers will learn to develop six time-mastery behaviors, including how to: treat time as a continuous "flow" of peak experience * set the rhythm of their organization * look beyond the moment and encourage long-term, strategic thinking * and use time as an energizing principle that drives improvement. With intriguing examples from sports, science, history, and the performing arts, as well as business, Time Mastery takes a fascinating, in-depth look at a surprising new leadership skill. ... Book Description

Most of us were raised to believe in the old saying, "Time is money."In The Art of Time, Jean-Louis Servan-Schreiber invites us to see time, instead, as life.He urges us not to accept the stress and discomfort that result from a lack of time because, ultimately, it will undermine both our effectiveness and our pleasure in life.Although we can neither modify nor change time, each of us has it in our power to change our attitude toward time-and to make good or bad use of it.The Art of Time will help you define and meet the challenges of modern life, where the Internet, cell phones, and electronic innovations have dramatically redefined how we use our time. Renowned French journalist Jean-Louis Servan-Schreiber's elegant and witty prose illuminates the causes of our frequent misuse of time and offers a cure to understand the "why" behind our busy schedules. His bottom line is to incite us to rediscover our true needs and priorities and to begin to live our time instead of simply spending it. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting but marginally useful.
I think this book is best for someone who's read Mr. Tracey's other books or listened to any of his audio cassette programs and wants a handy, pocket-size "memory jogger" of his basic ideas and insights. If you have not read other books on time management these "quotes" are likely to be of marginal use. While I've enjoyed Mr. Tracy other works I was somewhat disappointed in this one; I thought more could have been included even in a "little book" format. I do recommend his "Mastering Your Time" audio program, Alan Lakein's "How To Get Control of Your Time and Your Life" (my favorite, though it's only available in a mass market paperback now) and Julie Morgenstern's "Time Management From the Inside Out."

5-0 out of 5 stars Time As Our Scarcest (and Thus Most Valuable) Resource
This book is designed for those who need time management the most, and have the least knowledge about the subject. I'll be brief, as a result.

The book is a collection of over 250 sayings, questions, and quotes (very few of the last) on the subject of why time is important and how to get the most out of it.

I have read extensively on this subject, and did not see any major area of thinking that was not reflected somewhere in the book. So you will have a good overview of the principles for how to improve when you are done. You won't have detailed directions, but other books can help you with that when you are ready for them.

The book covers why time is important, goal-setting about time, use of goals, the application of Pareto's Law (80/20 Rule), planning, delegation, priorities, outsourcing, happiness, getting rid of time wasters, rewards from becoming more effective, reading and learning more effectively, and the impact on your personal life.

If you allocate 2 minutes a day to this book, you should soon be saving significant amounts of time and becoming more effective. You could do that while sitting through commercials on television or during moments of enforced idleness when it is safe to read (riding the bus, waiting in line at the bank, etc.).

By starting to take control of your time, you'll end up with a life you would like to lead! Use the additional time well to make a difference for those you care about!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Things Come In Small Packages
Good things come in small packages, and Brian Tracy's book, "Great Little Book On Mastering Your Time," lives up to that expectation. This is an easy book to read, with powerful concepts simply stated. Brian Tracy pulls no punches in his statements: "Most people engage in activities that are tension-relieving rather than goal-achieving". This book restates key aspects using different phrasing in several places in the book, to drive home points through repetition. It deals with the fundamental fact that without clearly defined goals we can not hope to maximise our use of time. How we use our time directly impacts our ability to accomplish whatever is truly important to us. Brian Tracy reminds us of the importance of spending a large quantity of time with our families, with unbroken chunks of time devoted to each of the most important people in our life. Focusing on the quality of the 2,000 hours per year a typical person works - planning and managing that time effectively - is key to leading a prosperous and balanced life that brings peace of mind for us and security for those we love.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great pocket book, Brian Tracy is still the best
Once again, Brian Tracy, master educator, has turned potentially long winded subjects into the most useful pieces of short, but powerful suggestions for one to improve their quality of life. After all, we all have a limited amount of hours in any day. Brian makes the suggestions in a way that any active individual can benefit. I reccommend this book to everyone, but especially to those with "no time" to read. Read a few pages in the morning, a few at night, 30 seconds...can you spare that for a better life? ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Long Book Short on New Information
My tip for time management is to skip this book. Assuming that one reads at about one page per minute, it's difficult to believe that one could recoup the five hours invested in reading this book in saved time. As in other time management books, the author borrows liberally from Stephen Covey's far superior '7 Habits of Highly Effective People', particularly in prioritizing tasks as urgent/not urgent and important/not important. The author also annoyingly tries to infuse some dull story about a couple trying to manage time more effectively by writing page after page about them to illustrate EACH AND EVERY POINT made. I HIGHLY recommend skipping this one and getting '7 Habits' or Brian Tracy's 'Eat That Frog' -- a short (113 page), easy-to-read book that gives better information, but can be read in an hour or so. ...
