5-0 out of 5 stars An energy & renewal oracle
Last Saturday, I sat with a coffee on a bench outside Quatermaine's and enjoyed about an hour and a half of reading Running on Plenty. That morning break was followed by regular respites of reading time during the following week. I confess to have skipped around and not even attempted to read front to back. Not my way. Yet, it didn't take long for me to run out of pages that had none of my highlighted markings on it.

This book is a solid contribution to my professional and personal life. The visuals are friendly and effective -- the key points, inspirational quotes, road to renewal signs, spaciousness, tailor-made graphics, soulful writing, practicality, and page after loving page of simple wisdom -- all satisfying and nourishing.

I appreciated how this book began, with both authors telling personal stories of learning first-hand about the importance of balance and renewal. Each story was poignant and something that anyone can identify with, I would imagine. It's a friendly, friendly book -- from colors to typeface to spacing to mixing of many inspirational and helpful lines from endless sources & resources. There is so much good work & research supporting what has been assembled and written, which is immediately apparent to the reader, that it had the effect of relaxing me --I knew I was in good hands, and that I was being enriched in ways that I needed.

One final observation that has stayed with me...when I closed the book and went to my car to drive home, and on the way home I noticed a very good, rich, dynamic energy in my solar plexus. It wasn't the caffeine because I'm strictly on decaf now. So, I know it was the stirring from the tone and gentle massaging of the stories, insights, resonance, and spirit of your book. That was a wonderful gift. It surprised me to have had an effect on my energy simply from the reading. I think that happens in the presence of beauty, goodness, and truth, which has been masterfully conveyed and honored.

This book has become an important companion, helping me to care for myself so that I can care more effectively for others.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Time-Management Pocketbook
A very compact and useful 120 page presentation on core time management principles, and tools ready to use in the workplace, by undergraduate business students, or consultants.

Topics include: managing work activities, managing your thinking and reasoning, managing relationships, managing communications, and managing your work environment. Tools include: Pareto, importance vs urgency matrix, delegation checklists, mind-maps, fishbone diagrams, stress management and more.

The material is well presented in the context of business needs. On the negative side, the content is dated, and the compact format limits the number of toolsets and the extent of discussion of contemporary time/project management software.

2-0 out of 5 stars Too obvious for me
I think this is best for people who have some major blind spots when it comes to other people's responsibilities and to their own boundaries. Yes, it gives examples and solutions. But it all seemed obvious.
I don't think I had any "ah ha" moments. If you agree that it's for people with major blind spots, I think you'll agree it should address the readership as well, since such big blind spots generally come with other issues that can get in the way of following the advice in this kind of book.
In my corporate experience, it is usually the more subtle behaviors that don't get addressed and fester, or problems that are more systemic and pervasive as part of the company's culture. But The Addictive Organization it isn't. If it went farther, it could be a codependence recovery book about deeper changes that have to happen to deftly handle the situations it addresses.
If the folks that gave those five star reviews can come back a year later and say that their work lives were really changed, then I'd be more open to the idea that this book is relevant.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not just a time management book
A lot of books about organizing only deal with time management. In this book, the author deals with other types of disorganization. I had to laugh when I read the part about the deceptive chaos creating boss. I now think of that former boss as only a guy with nothing more than a clean desk and a leather Day-Timer. On the surface, he looked organized, in reality, he was never prepared for many of the meetings.

5-0 out of 5 stars I am saved.....
At last!!!! Harriet Schecthter's inspirational book "Conquering Chaos at Work" is here and it's a gem, providing practical, no nonsense solutions to those organizational challenges that frustrate us daily at work.

"Conquering Chaos at Work" fills a gaping void in previous organizational literature by not only addressing and resolving where our personal attempts to get organized may have failed, but also providing vital suggestions and systems to encourage and help the organizationally impaired people around us who may impact negatively on our own effectivess.

"Conquering Chaos at Work" is a must for anyone who aspires to becoming more effective at work and at life.

Do yourself and your organization a big favour and pop one in your shopping trolley now!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
Harriet Schechter's Conquering Chaos at Work is fun to read and very comprehensive. It covers different types of chaos creators and provides methods to deal effectively with these habits, whether they exist in ourselves or other people. In describing the way that people can contribute to unnecessary disorganization, the book does more than describe general behavior and various tips to overcome these tendencies - she gives interesting case histories as well. This is part of what makes it fun to read! It has just the right balance of substance and light-heartedness. I highly recommend it as an easy read that is well worth referring to again and again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Common-sense Organizing
Without a doubt, this is one of the best organizing books I have read in quite some time! From the very beginning, the author defines CHAOS to make sure the reader understands exactly what she is talking about; the rest of the book is common-sense organizing written in a humorous style. A very easy read.

If I had to choose one specific topic I liked most in CHAOS, it would be the fact that most of our disorganized lives come from outside sources, and this book teaches us exactly how to resolve that chaos. Put that way, it seems very simple doesn't it?

Help is on the way. Ms. Schechter provides a Chaos Questionnaire, and gives the reader permission to skip to problematic topics first without reading the book cover to cover. Anytime I read this, I am relieved, because this is truly a time saver that we all welcome.

Conquering Chaos at Work targets time and paper management that we all face, reminding us that we are not alone in our efforts to organize our workday, constantly resolving challenges that others create. No wonder we all have such a problem getting things together. After reading this book, you will be able to identify, classify, and conquer the chaos creators in your own life; and if you can smile and heave a sigh of relief along the way, all the better! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars And just in time.
I thought this book would change my life. But I never thought it would also... oops... I forgot my watch.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Common Sense Down-to-Earth Approach To Time Management
I've always considered myself to be a pretty well organized person. My life is full of many projects, both at work and at home. However this book surprised me with many clever and innovative ideas I can directly apply to my daily life to make my many activities go even smoother. The book is very thorough, and covers almost every aspect of a person's daily life where saving Time would be a major benefit. Thank you, Dr. Jager, for writing such a down-to-earth book all of us can use!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great suggestions, easy to learn and apply in daily life!
Jan Yager's Creative Time Management doesn't talk in generalities. If you work or don't work,if you are young or old, you will find her suggestions practical and easy to apply in your daily life. The major bonus in her book is that she is willing to address the concept that our emotional state of being plays a major part in our ability to handle and manage our time appropriately. So few books include this component. I refer back to the book from time to time, (no pun intended), to specific sections to help me make changes in my own life that will benefit better use of my time. As a professional speaker and trainer, I recommend this book to my audiences and class participants as an excellent resource. We all need a guide like this to read and refer to in order to help balance our busy lives.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well organized, direct, and easy to follow!
Without a doubt, this is the best book on time management I have read in a very long time. Dr. Yager's approach to the biggest challenge we all face each day is well organized, direct, and easy to follow.

The book's opening chapter has a self-evaluation test consisting of five questions that will stimulate your brain and open your mind to new ideas for change. You will learn her 7 Principles of Time Management, emotional blocks that keep us from managing our time wisely, a list of bad habits that affect not only you but those around you, and 4 Simple Organizational Guidlines. And that's just the beginning!

Dr. Jager not only identifies time wasters, but gives you the tools to eliminate them. Her techniques are so practical and hands-on that you'll immediately see ways to change your patterns. Her research documents organizational challenges, andshe clearly prescribes ways for you to overcome them.

While other self-improvement books list the ailments and suggest their way to fix the problem, Creative Time Management gives you the permission to help yourself. That's what growth is all about, now, isn't it?

5-0 out of 5 stars Great time saver for the new millennium
As a working mother of a working mother, Creative Time Management for the New Millennium by Dr. Jan Yager is invaluable. The advice about "making productive use of your 'Hidden Time" is worth the price of the book. She writes: "For example, you may use the five minutes you usually spend waiting for the bus, or the half hour waiting in someone's office, to plan, dictate, read, work on your laptop computer, return or receive calls on your cell phone, or just relax and meditate. " She also admits that when her children were young, she forced herself to wake up by 4 am. so she could work uninterrupted until at least 7 am. She advises how to discover your energy highs and lows. There is little doubt that time will be even more difficult to find in the new millennium so this book will certainly help readers make the future less frantic while finding the time to be successful in parenting and in a career. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars A book to give to Type A's.
This book explains a variety of ways to eliminate the stresses in life that can damage one's health and otherwise reduce the quality of one's life. It may be useful to those who feel generally stressed out but can't seem to identify how to control that stress.

The writing attempts to be witty, but falls a bit short in places.

It's a pretty quick read, so it may be possible to get some Type A's to sit down and actually read it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Time Management Handbook for Librarians
The Time Management Handbook for Librarians provides many valuable time management techniques and tips for library professionals. The author, Wesley Cochran, is a law library director and has taught time management workshops for librarians. The end result is a book that does a good job of taking time management techniques and applying them to libraries.

This time management handbook does not only cover personal time management techniques, but it covers techniques for working with others, and techniques for library administrators. The last two chapters briefly describe balancing career with ones personal life and how to implement a time management plan.

The focus is not so much on saving time as it is to decide ahead of time what goals are most important to accomplish. Having goals and objectives in place librarians can then create a daily plan of action that allows them to work on high priority items first. This will help librarians avoid time wasters such as procrastination, taking on too much, and not being able to say no. Other good tips mentioned were setting aside uninterrupted quiet time everyday, deciding which time of day you are most productive, how to plan effective meetings, and how to delegate effectively.

The Time Management Handbook does what other time management books don't, apply time management to a library setting. However, this book does not explain how to implement a time management plan in great detail. Concepts of planning, goal setting, and implementing time management techniques are not mentioned in depth. Instead the book provides a helpful framework for effective time management. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars It's about time! Time Control that is.
I bet I could have cut back on many of the sixty, seventy, and eighy-hour weeks that I've put in over the years, if this book had been published earlier!
Just as a well-run business follows a budget in spending money, an effective businessperson should also follow a budget (or schedule) in spending time.
Do any of these describe you: Burnt out, stressed out, rundown and tired; Out of balance; out of control; Too much to do; not enough time for my family and me.
Vince Panella's "26-Hour Day" has certainly helped me to get it all done and avoid the interruptions that could throw me off track so that I don't end up procrastinating important items.
Mr. Panella also offer's online time control training and I've also signed up for that. www.timecontrol.cc

5-0 out of 5 stars This 26 Hour Day is Not Fiction!
This Twenty Six Hour Day Is Not Fiction! A Book Review
by Mike Banks Valentine

Vince Panella might have been accused of writing a work of
fiction when titling his book "The 26 Hour Day, How to Gain
at Least 2 Hours a Day with Time Control". When he begins
his "Introduction to Time Control" chapter by stating on the
first page that he's . . . "come to the conclusion that --
time management does not work!" he immediately had me hooked.

I was charmed by the intensely human approach he takes from
the beginning. I've got to agree with him because my own
experience with time management is that it has a mechanistic,
almost robotic feel to it as presented by efficiency experts,
management consultants and minutia-charting time accountants.
Here is an approach that allows for "wasting time" and, even
more surprisingly, advocates getting sufficient sleep!

Although he suggests wasting incrementally less time than you
normally might he is clearly aware that as human beings, we
are driven less by deadlines than by emotional needs. At least
once in every chapter, reminding the reader that we are not
perfect and that it's OK that we're not precise as robots.

Panella blends the best of self improvement with his unique
approach to what he calls "Time Control", quoting personal
growth gurus Tony Robbins and Deepak Chopra beside references
to American Statistician, W. Edwards Deming, the man who was
". . . given credit for engineering Japan's modern industrial
success over the last 50 years." Deming guided Japanese
business through a formula of continual success improvement.

Constant incremental refining of success formulas is certainly
not limited to Deming. One of my strongest early inspirations
was reading "The Autobiography of Ben Franklin", in which the
continual improvement of Franklin's character throughout his
life is chronicled. Self improvement predated Franklin as well,
but Panella has combined the best of personal growth with time
control to offer what he has called "Success Centered Time
Management."

Although Panella does cover critical topics typical to time
management such as standard issue and admittedly important -

* Winning the War Against Procrastination
* The Power and Purpose of Goals
* Reducing Distractions

Those key points are presented in ways that kept my interest,
a surprising accomplishment in itself. But Panella has some
more compelling thoughts on some new approaches he has refined
over his nearly 20 years of presenting this material. Notable
are several concepts that resonate strongly with humanity.

* Gain 2 More Hours a Day Through the Power of Sleep

As one with sleep apnea disorder, I require more sleep than
most, but Panella boldly proclaims that, "Lack of adequate
sleep is the reason for 90 percent of the problems many of
us experience in gaining more control of our time."

He makes a strong case for a society that values sleep far
more than does ours. He goes so far as to cite a Gallup poll
that showed "Twenty-Five percent of adults believe they
cannot be successful AND get enough sleep!" He gives ample
reasons, from reduced productivity and performance right on
through loss of life caused by drowsiness and inattention.

* Bit by Bit, The Amazing Power of Five Minutes

This section emphasizes devoting a simple five minutes to
gradual progress toward seemingly huge goals on a daily
basis. Slow and steady wins the race might describe this
approach. He refers to this technique throughout the book
in varied ways to suggest that progress doesn't have to be
measured in tireless devoted hours of struggle, but can be
achieved much more easily "bit by bit."

* Moments, The Secret of Life

As a teenager, I wondered what my life might look like as
a two hour movie and imagined what little slices of time
might make it to the final cut (as I experienced one of my
first identity crises upon finishing high school). Panella
suggests that all of our lives are much like that and are
defined by individual moments of positive accomplishment
and that all lives are made up of a collection of small
moments we strongly identify with and remember powerfully.

The striking concept he delivers in the book is that we
not only have that inventory of past moments, but that we
should consider steadily depositing in a bank account of
moments from each day, and further, that we consider
investing to accumulate a wealth of moments. "Every day,
consciously look to create significant and simple moments"
to add to your "moments account".

* Maximizing Any Experience

"Before any event or experience . . . simply ask yourself
how prepared you are . . . for the event. You'll go through
details in your head and take a subjective measurement . . .
Then you'll ask yourself what you can do to make the event
a little better ahead of time. You'll repeat asking this
question . . . listing your answers . . . When complete,
you'll have a laundry list of actions to maximize the
event . . . You get to play armchair quarterback ahead of
time. You pull yourself back and look at the big picture
with a chance to make positive changes. Something we fail
to do more times than not."

"Maximizing almost seems too easy." Indeed it does, but
what a powerful tool if we only developed the habit.

The 26 Hour Day, I'm convinced, is a real possibility
in terms of maximising events, investing in our moments
with sincere gratitude and bit by bit, in multiple five
minute increments, we can gain additional value from our
alloted time.

Vince Panella has unwittingly given me the blueprint for
my New Years Resolutions for 2002. I'm committed to
investing significant time to his program of continual
success improvement over the coming year. ... Read more

Time is the currency of the New Economy because time earned has "money value." Make time pay for you! The organizations that succeed in managing time effectively will reap its rewards: time earned to grow the business, create new products, or enable your network of people to be at their best.

In Mark Ellwood's A Complete Waste of Time, the secrets of time management unfold before us with renewed verve. Tips and techniques are intermingled with time trivia and poetic inspiration. This book is for the organization who's employees just can't manage to keep up and don't know where to turn to, or for those of us who need a refresher.

Within the first few pages Mark's delightful tales begin to entertain and amuse. A Complete Waste can be read in one sitting or a chapter at a time. You'll find yourself picking up a pen and jotting down some ideas on time earned from meetings, delegation, networking, and that all too time consuming obligation, travel. A Complete Waste is the source for knowledge when it comes to profit from time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Getting educated while laughing !
If laughter is the best medicine, then learning the lessons in "A Complete Waste of Time" will be absolutely pain-free.

As a Professional Organizer, this was the first book I read on the subject of time management. Mark Ellwood's humourous take on the subject made it very easy to learn and understand his techniques and I gained a great deal of insight into the field of time management. This was not only personally beneficial, but it has also helped a great deal in assisting my clients with their time-management struggles.

Thanks Mark ! ... Read more
