Book Description

Smart tips for staying in the loop when you're out of town.

One of the most crucial aspects of any job is making sure you're in control even when you're not at your desk. Now organization and time management gurus Ronni Eisenberg and Kate Kelly show business travelers dozens of ways to stay organized and keep in touch, whether they're away from the office for a day, a week, or a month.

It shows how to establish foolproof telephone and email systems and lets readers in on the latest technology, from portable scanners to wireless internet access. It offers tips on packing everything from a briefcase to a suitcase (as well as what not to bring). It suggests dozens of ways to make traveling safer, healthier, less taxing and more fun. And it shows how to manage the homefront during those trips (from taking care of the mail to taking care of the kids). 4-0 out of 5 stars Short and Sweet, Gets to the Point
At first review of this book I was somewhat disappointed-the first and second chapters. The information seemed a tired carbon copy of all the other organizational, self help books on the market. It seemed like it was all common sense and elementary in nature. My goal was to get hot tips quickly without the fluff. As I read on, I found what I was looking for. Great tips on saving time by clever delegation and eliminating useless information, meetings etc. I found the tips on what I call "filtering" masses of information very helpful. This book was an easy read and the information was easily digestible. They key points are called out as captions in the book for easy reference. The amount of common sense this book regurgitates is fairly acceptable. These bits of common sense we may find irritating are probably the ones we continually forget to put into action. If you are short on time and need ideas quickly, this book is well worth the small investment. ... Read more

Book Description

Time is of the essence -- and no one seems to have enough of it. But before people can begin to manage time and gain control of their lives, they need to understand why they got out of control in the first place. The Unofficial Guide to Managing Time covers every aspect of life -- not just the nine-to-five grind -- with inside tips on setting priorities and goals, scheduling that works (without wasting additional time!), organizing, delegating, and initiating rather than reacting in personal, business, creative, academic, and family spheres.

Readers learn to

  • Ask for help -- and let go once tasks have been delegated
  • Make best use of tools that help beat the clock, from calendars to computers to the telephone and more
  • Maintain good time management habits by using relaxation and exercise
  • Adapt timely skills for individual lifestyles -- parents (new, used, and single), fast-track career people, students, and creative souls.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not at all helpful. Totally useless
I have a family, work part-time, do charity work, try to squeeze in a few minutes for my wonderful friends.

I don't have spare time aplenty. I thought this book would be helpful, but it wasn't.

The ideas recommended were common sense, and worse the writing was wordy, dry and not at all engaging.

I realize this book is nonfiction, but even nonfiction should offer interesting language, and words, and delightful anecdotes.

This book had none of that.

In my opinion this tome should have been called THE UNOFFICIAL GUIDE TO WASTING TIME.

5-0 out of 5 stars more time yea!
As a student I have found this to be an exelant plan for saving valable time.

5-0 out of 5 stars what I gained from this book as a student and author of poet
As a literture Student and Poetry Author. writing the for school on line magizine, as well as independent poetry contest. Working on several projects at the same time for my world novels class and creative writing class. Keeping a part time job and trying to have a home life is very hard when your at school four days a week from 8 am. to 9pm. This book has showed how I can organize my time better, and how to judge which things come first. I've had to ask myself a hard question, just how bad do I want to reach my goals. And was I willing to make some sacifices in my life to reach this goal. Once I had answered these questions the decision was easy. But if one is not serious about what ever their trying to do, if that person is not willing to make the sacefices to obtain it. Then they really dont want it nor need it or really care if they can save time and make their life a litle bit eaiser. This Author should be praised, and I hope she writes more on the subject.

5-0 out of 5 stars Student help is excellent
i go to school and need real help managing the hourzzzzz it takes me to do homework and schedule time to keep up with projects like electornoics and science. this was reccomended to me by a friend and it has some real good tips. i learned how to schedule the end of the semester stuff that always gets me in trouble and maybe i'll get better grades because i can finish stuff now.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent business info!
I'm married and work almost 60 hours a week. It's been insane to try to get more things done, but reading this book helped me put things in perspective. I got great tips on organizing my office, learning how to stop interruptions, and dealing with the electronic pauses in my day. I highly recommend it. You don't have to have children to feel stressed, and though I was surprised at the other comments, I feel that the book was quite valuable to me. Maybe people with kids should look for something more specific to the home? ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Most Useful Technology Books to Read
I happened to pick up this excellent book from a local library. It has everything I need to know about organizing my life in the tech era.It was written in a precise and straight forward language with selected amount of useful information. I have read quite a few books in organizing and technology management. This book amazingly covers most core principles in other books, and its texts are less than 150 pages.

Ms. Hedrick starts from simple decisions of purchasing/using PDA or a Cellular Phone, to sophisticated system of organizing your life with papers, electronic documents, as well as relationship with other people in term of staying in touch and sharing information. The progression of depth is very nicely planned.

When I think harder, I have found the concepts of this book are aligned with most 'new age' simplicity books. 'Get Organized' gives you every tool you need without the philosophical understandings. The steps and methodologies outline in this book are very easy to follow, and they are effective. If you want to
dig deeper with advanced techniques, this book has plenty of leads you can follow up with.

You can read 'Get Organized in the Digital Age' in an afternoon and reap the benefit of it for the rest of your life. Give it a try!

1-0 out of 5 stars The author's suggestions are ineffective
I ordered this book to try to help the people in my office become more effective managing goals. My co-workers and I have tried some of the author's suggestions, but they have been unsuccessful. Rather than buy this book and read about goal management at work, your time would be better spent communicating with your co-workers. The book does not talk enough about the crucial aspect of communication, and focuses too much on how cognitive abilities affect goal management. Goal setting is extremely important, but Hilgermann's book fails to acknowledge how multidimensional goal setting tends to be. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars disappointed - not the bob bly quality of old
bob bly has written a lot of great books. this is not one of them. i have bought and read most of his books. this one is not up to bob's usual quality.

i have learned a lot of useful things from his other books, but not this one. the little content that had potential did not tell me how to actually use his advice. much of it was unusable by normal people and almost seemed like padding to a magazine article to stretch it to a book.

this book stated the obvious things to do but did not tell how to do them. any time management 101 book would tell more than this book.

some of his advice is similar to the simple-minded simplicity books that would have you using the same towel all week to save laundry. obviously bobs stuff works for bob but we are not bob -- we are us and he should tell us stuff that works for us.

bob works hard and is very successful. but i do NOT want to work hard -- i want to work smart. i just want to know how to get the most out of the time i do work because i plan to have some BALANCE to my life and some fun too not just use every minute to make money.

if bob had just explained all of his lists and how he uses them then the book might have been worthwhile. as it is, it seemed like he ground out another book to make money. the quality of the content was just not up to his earlier books.

if you want to use your time more efficiently then read get control of your time and your life by alan lakein.

bob has some 5star books this one is barely one star.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended!
Robert W. Bly's helpful, amusing and slim volume is jam-packed with wisdom and plenty of tips to help you organize, manage your time better, cure procrastination and increase your productivity. While some of his advice is plain old common-sense information that you've probably already heard, it may well bear repeating. Just one look around your office may show you how many people have heard some of this counsel before but are still hopelessly disorganized time wasters. Bly includes pertinent data from surveys of leaders and working stiffs who feel overwhelmed by information, too many demands on their time and the constant struggle to fit 25 hours of work and real life into a 24-hour day. He also sprinkles witty and instructive quotes throughout the book, which we at getAbstract.com recommend to anyone who'd like to have a little extra time left over (and that's everyone). ... Book Description

Technological capability is driving what has become known as the Information Age. As we enter the 21st century, we face a paradox in that computers have caused many companies to fall behind rather than leap ahead in how they use the information technology being provided in ever-increasing volumes. The problem is not with the information systems, but with the people who use them. This book presents new ways of handling and presenting information. This readable, timely, and useful book:

• provides new ideas on making clearing house information available and immediately useful to companies.
• gives greater market leverage.
• generates competitive advantage for companies.
• includes a definitive roadmap for business professionals.
• teaches how to collect, package, and use feedback.

5-0 out of 5 stars Winning With Information the Timmerman Way
WINNING THE INFORMATION GAME is 153 pages of insight into using information, feedback and communications to the betterment of you and your company. You find yourself agreeing with the author because he has the knack of telling a good story, and explaining the rationale behind his recommendations. In many cases he points out the pitfalls from doing it other ways - which should make a few re-think their modius operendi. I've read many of the books and references Tim Timmerman cites such as "Unleashing the Killer App..," "Real Work," "A Complaint is a Gift," and the Scott Adams' books, et. al. In my mind, they all belong in your library - after you've read them and put their knowledge into practice. Tim's book belongs right next to all the other great management and leadership books you already enjoy. His seven steps will help you take a giant leap by taking advantage of some very well thought out strategies and battle tested learning experiences. I strongly urge you read this book and put its lessons into practice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Information Age and People
Timmerman's WINNING THE INFORMATION GAME is a refreshing look at what is happening with the onslaught of information technology and, more importantly, what needs to be done to master this seemingly unbridled monster. The seven steps to market domination provide an excellent map for executives traveling the information highway in a way that adds knowledge value, not just information or data. Each addresses a critical issue in the capabilities of technology and our ability as managers to know and use it. The book's emphasis is not so much on knowledge management as it is on effective knowledge use.

Timmerman points out the essential requirement that today's executives and managers need to be very savvy about information technology as a business lever. The emphasis in the book on the need for a mind-set change for business leaders as it pertains to information and knowledge management as part of their managerial tool kit is well-placed.

This book offers a different and, in my view, a much needed new approach to the integration of knowledge as it pertains to the customer and to a company's people. Timmerman has successfully joined the hard stuff of information technology with the soft stuff of managing (or more critically, leading) people.

The chapter on avoiding the information highway pitfalls is a must read for business executives. Clear and straightforward, it is a non-technical guide well thought out.

WINNING THE INFORMATION GAME needs to be on the desk of any executive who wants to enhance his or her effectiveness in the next century. I see the book's message as: information technology needs to be in the hands of the managers, not the technologists. ... Read more

The next time I'm hacking up a course during some spare timeon a business trip, I'm going to blame the guys who wrote this book.
