Book Description

This is a book about actions. It explores many practical aspects of the idea that each of us is defined as a person by our deeds, not by our words. Its goal is to describe, in a simple way, how each of us can plan our own actions, within larger programs of action called projects, to make each stage of life more whole and more meaningful. In large measure, each stage of life consists of its own particular set of life projects. This book calls them life projects since, taken together, they define a person's life, in terms of contribution and values, almost completely.

There are surprisingly few books that carefully address both the practical and the deeper aspects of planning life's projects. This book can be of special value to those readers whose turn of mind includes an interest in the practical planning of your own projects, a desire to see each of your actions as part of a broader picture, and a determination to carry responsibility for defining your own path. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Rare Insight
This is the only book I've seen that applies scientific principles to personal growth. I've known Thomas Fields for many years and have seen his principles at work. Anybody would admire, if not envy, his professional and personal accomplishments. There is never any question that he will do what he starts out to do, or at least fail in a way that could not have been foreseen. His success is based on the ideas in this book. These strategies rely on rationale thinking, not voodoo. Reading the book caused me to examine my own project planning methods and gave me inspiration (and a framework) to do better. What's especially rare is that a personal growth book should be written with such absolute clarity. I think this book is going to make a positive difference in many lives. ... Read more

Book Description

Have you had any of these thoughts in the past week?

I wish I had more time.

I don't have time for that.

I'm running out of time.

This is a waste of time.

This is taking too much time.

I need more time.

Sound familiar? For most of us, juggling too much to do with not enough time in which to do it is a painful, exhausting reality. But out of the cacophony of conflicting advice on scheduling and multi-tasking emerges a resonant voice that goes to the root of our problem with time and offers a fascinating new solution. In this revolutionary book, George Lawrence-Ell looks past superficial approaches to time management and illuminates the very essence of what time is and how we actually experience it. With questions and illustrations as a guide, he takes us on a scintillating journey through our assumptions about clock time, how we actually feel time pass, and ultimately leads us to a practical model we can all use to become time's master instead of its slave. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Huh?
I picked up this book hoping to understand the intricacies of time management.. a new approach. That thought was quickly shot down in the introduction - see that.. I'm so pressed for time I didn't even read it. :)

I did flip through the chapters and was drawn to a few paragraphs.

What a disapointment. The idea that time can pass quickly or slowly determined by the circumstances you face, whether it's enjoyable or not, is about as much as I got out of this book.

The basic premise is that we should approach our daily lives in the present moment. Plan only for what is immediate and in front of you at that moment, give your all to that moment. Don't worry about the past and what you could or should have done at some other time.

Great. But then he goes on to say we should have no thoughts of some "idealized future" and no lists or plans for the day.. allow inspiration to drive your work.

Inspiration is only a starting point for something you want to achieve. After that it is necessary to have a plan. How can you run a business or even go about family duties.. washing clothes.. going grocery shopping and picking up the kids from the grandparents, driven only by inspiration?

That's madness.. you need some sort of logical timetable to work with.

And as for an "idealized future" isn't that like having a vision
of where you want to be in life? You absolutely must know where you want to go in life, what you want to do, and must maintain a positive vision or you will get to nowhereland on the express tracks.

Of course.. the actual steps to acheiving the vision are made in the present, by the actions you do today but I didn't get that he meant it that way.

I'm new to this time management thing. Looking for ways to stem my own procrastinating ways, the stutter stepping on the journey to an "idealized future" but this book just confused me.

5-0 out of 5 stars A first-rate book and enthusiastically recommended
The Invisible Clock: A Practical Revolution In Finding Time For Everyone And Everything by George Lawrence-Ell (Founder and Director, Human Intelligence Research Institute) is a straightforward, "reader friendly" guide to wisely budgeting one's time in order to best make time for everything one wants to do. Questioning basic assumptions about clock time and offering practical models and techniques for making the most of limited time, The Invisible Clock is a first-rate book and enthusiastically recommended reading -- especially for busy students, overworked parents, and stressed-out businessmen! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Zen Organizing changed my life
Okay, I thought I was pretty smart and pretty successful... but I could never keep my house orderly, it never even occurred to me that the insides of drawers could be neat and not stuffed to the brim with stuff. And knickknacks?.... oh, I was the Queen of Knickknacks. My mother was a mess and so was my father (an artist and an inventor... need I say more?) ... and so it never even occurred to me that I could have a neat and orderly home. To tell you the truth, I had gotten used to the feeling that my surroundings were going to leap on me at any time, and so just closed my eyes and pretended like the clutter was... some kind of mulch for my creativity.

That is until I met Ms. Leeds. I was fortunate enough to hire her to help me move into my new home. And, frankly, she made a miracle out of it. And my closet! I actually was awed every time I walked into my closet. I am so grateful to be able to have her again through her book... and not have to pay the big bucks for a one-on-one. It's like having her lead me through the rooms again, showing me how to refine them and create beauty every where I look. Her work is truly amazing and heartfelt. I definitely caught the "organizing fever" and now find absolute joy in creating little pools of order and beauty all around my home. And, to my total amazement, I have learned to enjoy cleaning... because whenever I clean an area... it goes back to being absolutely beautiful. Something about the energy "shines"... I can't explain it.

Anyway, this book is a gift to yourself. I read all the other books on organizing and, quite frankly, they made it too much work. The others made the process of organizing seem like some long, tortuous, boring punishment for being right-brained. THE ZEN OF ORGANIZING brings... Zen into it. Peace. A sense of aliveness and a space for something to enter from the beyond. Like my home is a work of art. I keep refining corners and views and sometimes I just wrap my space around me like a coccoon and cuddle and grin knowing that my surroundings are truly nurturing me. And that it's all right just to sit and enjoy them because to have peace and beauty around me is actually important. That's a new concept for me. Whew. Thank you, Regina. You have truly transformed my life and helped me to become one happy camper. And another thing about it... I didn't have to buy a lot of expensive things to do it... I just had to follow the instructions and then adapt them to my own sensibilities. I suggest everyone buy one copy for themself and one for their favorite messy friend. Once you learn the knack, it becomes a game.

5-0 out of 5 stars Zen delivered...
The Zen of Organizing: Creating Order and Peace in Your Home, Career and Life is one of the first organizing books that I have read that made sense and that actually made a difference in my life. The book has resulted in my creating more peace (zen) not only within my home, but also within my life. The author, through her suggestions and stories, helped me to identify solutions and provided insight to my organizing. Ms. Leeds' inspirational approach to organizing has assisted me in getting organized and staying organized.
If you are looking for lasting changes...Give yourself a gift and get this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Spirituality synergizes with functionality
"Creating Order and Peace in Your Home, Career, and Life," is a tall order and author Regina Leeds is up to the task. The Zen of Organizing goes beyond helpful tips (although it is full of them) to help the reader explore the nature of their relationship with their possessions. Leeds takes you by the hand on a journey to a better life beyond the clutter. The book opens with a discussion of how and why you can succeed in organizing, continues with a detailed area-by-area action plan, and finishes by tying it all together and addressing maintenance.

In the "Getting Started" section, Leeds prepares you for the journey ahead. Organizing isn't easy even though it's simple. Everyone carries emotional baggage that ties in with the physical clutter in their lives. Prior to accomplishing anything, one must identify goals and challenges and then plan for success. The Zen of Organizing lets you know that you are in for a challenge in putting your life in order. It assures you that you're up to that task by helping you break it down into manageable tasks and providing some exercises geared to establish your motivation.

The main body consists of several chapters with specific advice for dealing with your work space, closets, bathroom, kitchen, common rooms and children's rooms. At each way point, you get a helping of common sense advice as well as deeper insight into why the common sense advice has been so hard to follow before. It's obvious from the stories she tells that Leeds has worked for and with people who have more money than the average reader. The principles she espouses, however, are universal: Eliminate, Categorize, Organize. This stuff works whether you're organizing your villa in Spain or your bachelor pad in Venice. Everyone has stuff. Everyone has issues. If you follow the advice in this book, your stuff and your issues will both become easier to manage.

The spirituality in The Zen of Organizing fits seamlessly into the functionality. It's about getting your life organized which is impossible unless your life can reflect your own inner peace. There is one chapter on Feng Shui which I've always thought of as a load of superstitious hooey. After reading this chapter, I see it as some common sense rules for space management as well as some superstitious hooey. A short chapter can be forgiven and doesn't detract from the clarity of the book as a whole. An important message that spoke to me is where the author says that organization shouldn't be used as a weapon in the relationship wars. You cannot create harmony while destroying someone else's peace. That alone is worth the price of admission.

The Zen of Organizing is well-organized (no surprise) and as profound in its details as it is detailed in its profundity. It lives up to its promise and has helped me create order and peace in my home, career and life. Anybody who is already organized could probably pick up a few pointers here and anybody who isn't already organized needs the kind of help offered in this book. Reading this book is the closest thing to having a personal organizer/spiritual guru/shrink/friend stand by and support you while you get your life together.

3-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
I bought this book on the strength of the reader reviews here hoping that it would make a good gift for a friend of mine whose home is a fire hazard, it is so cluttered with more than a decade of junk that she cannot throw away. However, the first chapter that would have been relevant to her needs deals with... how to keep your files straight! My gosh, for someone who is in great need of organizing help, that is one of the last matters to address. I found some of the examples in the book parochial and off-putting - who outside of LA and New York City spends $1,500 on a dinner party for six other couples?! And who in the world told Ms. Leeds that the purpose of a mezuzah for Jews is to ward off evil? That is absolutely ill-informed and incorrect. She should have checked that information out before printing it. In sum, you might find this book helpful if you are slightly to moderately disorganized. If you are nearly hopeless at keeping your life in order, this book will not help a bit.

5-0 out of 5 stars She addresses issues other books miss
I own a whole slew of books on the topic of decluttering and simplifying ones life. Heck, I doubt there is a book on the subject that I do not own. Plus I oversee a local simple living group here in my area of the Sierras, of California.

But this book, The Zen of Organizing is the first book I have owned and read that really clarified the reoccurring issue I face when it comes to actually accomplishing decluttering and actually experiencing for more than a few days or weeks, true simplicity.

This is where Chapter 10 titled Maintenance and Reality with a subtitle of Surrounbded by piles again? There's a reason and a cure., made the price of the book worth every penny. Because that's the real issue for me.

I would spend a half an afternoon week after week, year after year trying to figure out how the boxes I had dropped off at the charity pick up were full again. It seemed to be the complete opposite problem of the lost sock in the wash. And she answered the questions well.

If there is one area that I would call your attention to is the religious passages from various religions that begin each new chapter. If you are not religious or the verses are not from your belief system, ignore them. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Buddhist ideas in a business application
This is terrific introduction to Tibetan Buddhist ideas that are easier to understand because they are expressed in the anecdotal situations of running a printing business in the 90's. The author is candid and unpretentious, speaking clearly about the ups and downs of applying some ancient wisdom to his work, ideas that have come from a genuine buddhist master, but still had to be applied by someone who, despite considerable experience in business, was still a student of applied Buddhism. I like the genuineness of the author, and the feeling of the relationship with the teacher...this book is fun for those of us convinced there is something in Buddhism of great value, but not sure how to bring that something directly into our daily lives.

5-0 out of 5 stars New ideas on mastering time
This is a great book because of how it brings together ideas that are usually kept in separate compartments. The author is the student of a Tibetan Buddhist teacher, and about ten or twelve years ago he and some other students started a printing business. The idea was to use Buddhist teachings in the business, especially some principles that they call "skillful means," and to see if they could make the business more successful.

It seems like it worked. The business did really well, even though they started with a few strikes against them, and they had a good time too (not fun exactly, but a sense that their work had real value and was part of their spiritual path.)

All that makes for interesting reading. But the real point of the book is to share some of the lessons they learned. That's the part that seemed really rewarding. Skillful Means involves a whole approach to time and to taking responsibility for your life and for getting the results you want, in your work or anywhere else. I'm already experimenting with some of the ideas, and they make good sense, and have an immediate impact.

I don't know if all this will translate well into everyone's job, but I can see the benefit, and I feel like I've just scratched the surface. The author is really excited about the ideas in this book, and I am too. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The virtual university transforming workplace education
Suddenly it all makes sense! Virtual universities get hyped up, but what have been the results? We hear of all sorts of initiatives, yet somehow the educational world hasn't changed that much - or has it?

In 'The Virtual University: an action paradigm and process for workplace learning', Teare, Davies and Sandelands outline a coherent vision of what is possible, backed up by real examples of what they are achieving today.

The book manages to sketch out the big picture of the learning society within the context of a rapidly changing, uncertain world. It presents an inclusive, 'open systems' model of personal and organizational learning. But it's not just a theoretical model, as is ably demonstrated by the creation of Our University for Industry - hospitality worldwide, among other experiences related.

The use of electronic communications media is discussed, but this is not a book for the techno-heads, it's for educationalists and in-company senior training and OD specialists. And it's for everyone seeking to develop themselves on an ongoing, 'lifelong' basis.

It follows on nicely for me in the tradition of 'The Knowledge Game' and 'Our Enterprise School of Management' by Gordon Wills, and all works by Reg Revans e.g. 'The ABC of Action Learning'.

I enjoyed it and feel I have benefitted from finding the time to read it cover to cover!

However, since the outcome of the allocation ofattention is not certain, the number of projects among which attentioncan be allocated is stochastic and the maximum number of projects isendogenously determined by the optimal allocation of limitedentrepreneurial attention and describes the implications of thisanalysis for a number of economic problems. ...
