4-0 out of 5 stars A mixed blessing
This is the most useful Training book I've come across in a long time. I find myself referring to it often. However, it is in desperate need of editing. It could easily be cut down by 1/3 - and that would make it much better.

3-0 out of 5 stars Did anyone edit this book?
It is tragic to find wonderful research compiled into a book wrought with spelling, grammatical, and sentence structure errors. Unnecessary comments by the author makes reading even more tedious. A new edition with a good editor would make this book priceless.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for people in the workshop business!
"Ultimate" and "comprehensive" are the key words in the title that set this handbook apart from the others. They say it all - over 600 pages of checklists, diagrams, models, and examples covering every topic of the workshop business. And you are given permission to copy pages for personal workshop use! Book Description

The Success Case Method (SCM) offers a simple, carefully crafted way of determining how well a new organizational initiative is working. Already shown to be effective in dozens of organizations, SCM is based on five steps: focusing and planning the study; clearly defining what outcomes will be considered "success"; identifying success cases; conducting interviews to learn exactly how success was achieved; and communicating results throughout the organization. Written by an internationally recognized expert in evaluation and training effectiveness, these are fast and foolproof techniques. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Believable, credible and useful!
Finally! A simple, fast and credible evaluation tool that can be used to tell what is working in a new initiative, what is not working, and how the initiative could be more successful. This description sums up the evaluation technique described in The Success Case Method by Robert O. Brinkherhoff, a professor at Western Michigan University and an internationally recognized expert in evaluation and training effectiveness. If you are a manager trying to make things work better in your organization, this book will show you how to get compelling evidence that decision makers can actually use.

The Success Case Method is a simple book. Step by step, it takes you through the Success Case methodology, starting with planning the success case and creating an Impact Model. This model defines what success should look like. In completing the Impact Model, successful behaviors and results are listed that will happen if the initiative is working well. In leading up to successful application, the model includes the critical actions participants need to demonstrate to make success happen. It highlights the "line of sight," the linkage of an organizational initiative, to key business goals. The process is brief and concise, not strategic and comprehensive. It communicates the "business case" for the initiative -- how the capability produced in a new initiative can be used in actual performance to help achieve business goals.

The remaining chapters describe the process and tools used to search and identify the most likely success cases -- the stories that you need to understand and tell -- to figure out how well a new initiative is working. From the survey results, guidelines are then offered on interviewing respondents to determine what is really happening on the job as a result of application of the learned skills, what results are being achieved, the value of those results, and what could be done to get more people to use the skills.

Once the interviews have been completed, the author provides guidance in the creation and communication of Success Case study reports. Readers will learn how to create reports that are compelling and useful. Reports will drive not just an understanding of results, but help more people take action on those results. A Success Case study report also suggests changes that can be made to the initiative, the delivery of the initiative, or even the audience for whom the initiative is intended to strengthen the application of skills.

The methodology provides the means to combine storytelling with rigorous evaluation methods and principles to combine the credibility of scientific findings with the emotional impact of stories. The stories cite solid evidence and are backed by corroboration and documentation. The stories are verifiable accounts of the actions and results real people have experienced when applying learned skills in the workplace.

Overall, The Success Case Method is a must read for anyone involved in evaluating the impact of learning initiatives or anyone trying to get things to work better in their organization. The book presents simple tools, helpful illustrations, examples and checklists to use the Success Case Method constructively and easily. The end result of using this methodology is credible evidence that is believable, compelling and useful. ... Read more

Book Description

An accident has occurred on the floor of your plant. How do you determine what caused it so you can prevent it from happening again? Or what if there has been an error in the production line that has led to the manufacture of defective products? What do you do?

The answer is root cause analysis, a process that allows you to find the cause of single events/problems in the workplace. The Root Cause Analysis Handbook presents a walk-through example that illustrates the method and shows how to implement it.

Because poor initial problem definition can (and often does) undermine the problem-solving process, Ammerman places special emphasis on this area to build a solid foundation for effective analysis. He also provides guidance on preparing the final report.

The need for clear documentation on dealing with problems makes this book especially valuable for quality managers, engineers, safety managers, and teams implementing the ISO or QS standards.

Written in a simple, user-friendly style, you will grasp the core concepts quickly and begin applying them to your work. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good introduction to root cause analysis.
This book does an excellent job of quickly covering conventional root cause analysis. With an emphasis on documentation, the author takes you through a series of steps that include defining the problem, methods for collecting data and gathering information, analysis of the problem, and ultimately developing corrective action. This book moves very fast, reading more like a slide-show presentation than a book, yet the author is able to communicate a lot of good information using this minimalist approach. Rather than detailing numerous analysis methods, the author keeps it simple by sticking with a fixed path to problem solving. I found the "Pitfalls of ..." sections after each topic very insightful. In addition, the collection of forms, tables, and checklists included in the book (great appendix) are excellent. Don't look for case studies here, this is a straight forward how-to book

5-0 out of 5 stars Unique approach to a traditionally reactive technique
My background is information systems service delivery. I stumbled across this gem when I was searching for resources on how to structure outage investigations for applications that did not meet service level objectives.

Prior to reading this book I viewed root cause analysis as a reactive tool to be used to investigate the causes of failures. The approach taken by the author is to also use this technique as a proactive tool in a manner similar to failure mode effects and criticality analysis (FMECA).

Here is a summary of what how this book approaches root cause analysis: it begins with a section on defining problems and collecting data. This approach allows you to take a proactive approach, especially if you are in an environment that uses statistical process controls to measure process performance. This is augmented by a chapters on task analysis and event and casual factor charting. This is where the author's approach begins to resemble FMECA techniques, which are proactive versus reactive methods of addressing problems and risks. This is followed by chapters on interviewing and reporting.

I particularily liked the chapter on interviewing techniques, which added a practical dimension root cause analysis. I also liked the way the author used hints throughout the book to reinforce methods.

The rest of the brief 135-page book is devoted to forms, worksheets and checklists that significantly add to the value or the book. I would have liked an accompanying diskette with this material in electronic format, but the lack of it does not detract from the book in any way.

If you want to use root cause analysis as a proactive tool in conntection with a continuous improvement initiative I recommend that you also consider Understanding Variation by Donald Wheeler. If you are seeking a more proactive approach to preventing problems in the first place you might consider augmenting Root Cause Analysis Handbook with Failure Mode and Effect Analysis by D. H. Stamatis.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book about a methodology I use and know works!
Provides a clear, step by step methodology, with techniques, for problem or error analysis and identifying a solution. This is an exceptionally practical work offering a methodology for problem solving that is attractive; one which I subscribe to and use. Recommended. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars So good it showed me a retreat is not for us
This book is EXCELLENT. It is so good in fact that it showed me why a retreat is not for us. Instead, I am using the activities it describes to create a series of training sessions for our senior and middle managers, or what you might call a series of mini-retreats, a couple of hours each once a week over several weeks. The activities contained in this book are intelligent and fun, unlike several others I've read. I highly recommend this book for the activities section alone -- and if you do want to do a full retreat, it will prove even more valuable. Also, the sections on pre-interviewing participants and retreat design components were very helpful, and I am putting them to good use.

I also like "101 Games for Trainers" by Bob Pike, and "Games That Teach Teams" by Steve Sugar. I think these three books together are the best place to start -- there are a lot of other titles out there that are, in a word, garbage, and should be avoided.

5-0 out of 5 stars Executives Giving Retreats--You Must Read This Book!!
I run a large department in a major insurance agency. We have attempted on many occasions to hold retreats to improve cohesiveness and teamwork in my department. Ppredictably, some of them worked to some extent and others were total failures at great expense to the company.

Had it been my good fortune to have found this book earlier our department would have been avoided many pitfalls that we encountered. I'll never call another retreat without referring back to this book. I highly recommend Retreats That Work for several reasons. It is written in clear concise and no-nonsense language and with a flair and a sense of humor which made the read not only extremely helpful but also a pleasure. Any executive organizing a retreat should read this book before taking the first step.

5-0 out of 5 stars Priceless advice!
This is a terrific handbook for anyone who wants to (or has been assigned to) organize or lead a retreat for their company or non-profit organization. The authors describe the guiding principles for designing a retreat, they outline the logistics in detail, and they provide all kinds of good advice about how planners and facilitators should work together to get the most out of an offsite meeting. The checklists alone are worth the price of the book, and the activities sections are priceless!

5-0 out of 5 stars Beyond feel good: useful insights and exercises
This book gives examples of various kinds of retreats and includes sample exercises for each that are simple, creative, and effective with no hint of the flaky factor that makes some retreats go offtrack. In fact, I'd say that the section on "Reasons NOT to hold a retreat" was alone worth the price of this book for its value in clarifying what a retreat can and cannot do.

As a communications trainer with my own non-profit board to deal with, I was most impressed by the fact that the chapter on non-profits identifies as a "most common concern" exactly the thing that causes my board trouble -- complaints of micromanaging on details while sidestepping needs for fundraising. The insight that this is a structural problem rather than a personality issue has been extremely helpful to me -- even without a retreat -- and convinced me these authors must know what they're talking about.

5-0 out of 5 stars Everything you ever wanted to know
"Retreats That Work" could be subtitled "Everything you ever wanted to know about retreats." Just a look at the table of contents told me that there was going to be an answer to any question I might have -- from the basic who, what, when, where and why, to the types of specialized retreats.

I am in a related, but quite different, field. As a qualitative research moderator, I am often asked to facilitate meetings or retreats by clients who are unaware of the differences -- hence, my interest in this book. But, whether you are working for a small or large company and want to hold a retreat, or you are someone needing to actually facilitate such an event, this book is a wealth of information. And for anyone thinking of facilitating a retreat or just understanding what a facilitator must be able to do, they would be advised to read the "definition" or role of the facilitator on page 116!

I found this book very well-written, easy to read and follow. It's filled with lots of practical information and tips, valuable time estimates for the various activities, and additional resources given.

The creative thinking section was particularly interesting to me. As a "left brain" person, I am usually skeptical of these kinds of activities. But the authors' examples and explanations of each exercise gave me a new appreciation for the value of this type of retreat.

I also visited the authors' or book web site, which is a nice accompaniment to the book, including additional resources. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars If you have only one training book to keep....
I found Eitington's The Winning Trainer the best of the category. If you were to have only one training book for limited space available for your suitcase, I recommend this. Actually, when I leave my office for an overseas assignment, The Winning Trainer is always my companion. It is comprehensive and practical. Yes, it is the reference for active trainers.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Trainer's Bible
No one in the training field or doing anything even close (teachers take note!) should be without this book. I started workshops for high school students and have done exhaustive research, and spent a great deal of money. This book is by far one of the most outstanding resources anyone could have. I have covered mine to keep it from tattering, since I use it constantly in planning. It is so comprehensive...you can start with just a subject/topic...and find dozens of ways to present it. You can be a novice, or an experienced professional and benefit from this book. I simply don't have the words to express how valuable it has been to me. It is a gold mine of information about the teaching and learning processes.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best overall resource for the training professional.
This is an encyclopedia in one volume for the training professional -- one you can't do without. In clear, concise language the Eitington provides the concepts and ideas to prepare the learning environment, involve the participants, deliver content, and evaluate the learning experience. You won't find another book like it anywhere!

This is an excellent resource for new and experienced designers and trainers. The book contains HUNDREDS of ideas for active, interesting, meaningful learning. EVERYONE in the learning field should own this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent! The Bible of Training - Old and New Testament!
For a new trainer, this tome has proven to be an invaluable source of ideas, inspiration, examples, watch-outs, suggestions, and additional resources. Without this book, my first training sessions would have been lackluster meanderings into unfamiliar (and dangerous) territory. Mr Eitington's suggestions, guidelines and examples served to help me structure and flesh-out my seminar to be a strong success. The book is clearly organized with both a Table of Contents and an Index, and every chapter is broken down into relevant, digestible chunks. This guide focuses only a little on actually setting up and starting a training, in favor of creating a great deal of detail on training techniques, scenarios, and tools. The copiable sheets (for everything from pre-work to team games to feedback) 1included at the end of the book also provide much creative fodder, as well as saving a great deal of time. Of the five training guides I have, this is the one I use more than 80% of the time. ... Read more

Editor Alfred J. Walker briefly introduces the new Web-based technologies that are enabling human resource (HR) managers to operate more effectively. He then offers a series of 17 articles by different authors covering these new approaches. The topics covered include Web-based employee self-service, delivering employee benefits over the Web, creating an HR service center, outsourcing and using the Web for a variety of services, including recruiting, staffing, compensation planning, employee development and knowledge management. This specialized book will primarily interest HR professionals, top executives and information technology professionals involved in setting up HR information systems. Since HR professionals are attuned to human failings, we [...] trust they will forgive the book's occasional information overlaps - hard to avoid with a collection of articles by different authors - and frequently return to this solid and specifically useful book.

4-0 out of 5 stars a pretty good buy
I found many exercises in this book to be useful. Most of them require no props and can be adapted to any environment. I work with school and college students and have used the exercises in my workshops with good results. The games are categorised and presented very well.

3-0 out of 5 stars Average
Some of the activities are very good, however, you have to really look for them. Most of them are not very good or old and too familiar. However, the presentation is very good and the book has an easy reference at the begining that you can use to pinpoint the activities that are suitable for different topics.

1-0 out of 5 stars Much less than I expected
I was very disappointed with this one. In the introduction, the author reminds us that any games or activities must be relevant to the subject. Unfortunately, I saw very few activities that I could use as-is in my workshops. They would take too much time of a two-hour workshop for little return, or seemed to have little point at all. I saw a few I could adapt to the content of my parent and/or teacher early childhood workshops.

1-0 out of 5 stars This book is awful!
My organization purchased this book in hopes of finding some teambuilding exercises that could be used at a conference for 60 insurance claims professionals. What we found was A book filled with games and exercises designed for elementary school children or scouts on a camping trip. If we used any of these games/exercises, we would have had tomatoes thrown at us!

4-0 out of 5 stars Real good one for HR improvement
Can you pls send me some articles on this book which wud be of a help to me in further getting back to you for more books ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Contemporary Advice for Trainers
Wow! This book is a Who's Who of the training and development world. Each chapter is written by a leading contributor on the parts of the field they know best. Furthermore, each chapter is practical and accessible to the training practitioner.

This book guides the reader through the very best current thinking in training and development practice. Each chapter is skillfully written and edited to focus on delivering ideas that can --and should-- be applied and used.

For example, Chapter 9 is Judy Hale's Intervention Questionnaire. *NOT* a chapter about why you should use one--in this chapter get the actual questionnaire. Wm. Rothwell's Chapter 16, "The Future of Instructional Design," ends with a worksheet to encourage you to prepare for the changes described in the chapter. Sivasailam "Thiagi" Thiagarajan in chapter 25 on "Training Games and Activities" includes descriptions of almost 40 types of activities, checklists for game design and evaluation, and tips for facilitation and debriefing. James Kouzes and Barry Posner provide 12 tips to practitioners who help others "Learn to Lead." Rob't Hargrove describes transformational learning in chapter 23 in clear and dynamic terms. Don Kirkpatrick summarizes his 4-level evaluation process, and Jack and Patricia Phillips share their work on Return on Investment.

I'm only hitting the tip of the iceberg. I could easily select seven different chapters, and write how they are just as good as the seven above. There is not a single weak chapter, not a wasted word. I recommend it without reservation. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Blah!!! A Real Chore to Read
I have to admit, I can't stand books written in a question-and-answer format. Its too hard to find what you need. This book is a prime example of why I hate this format. As an example, let's assume that you want information on "Getting People to Participate." You go to the corresponding section and now have to wade through every question in the section to find something that may or may not be applicable to you and your session. There's no doubt that there is some useful information to be found in this book; unfortunately, its just too darned hard to find it. Save your money and buy a copy of "The Ultimate Training Workshop Handbook" instead.

5-0 out of 5 stars My Secret Weapon
When my boss came to me and awarded me the mantle of "trainer" for a huge project rollout at our site, I nearly panicked! I'd never done anything like this before, and I hadn't spoken in front of a group in years. This book saved my life! It is wonderfully and empathetically written, and it was easy for me to absorb the trainers' collective years of experience. As a result, I gained the confidence I needed. My class feedback has been terrific; some people saying it's one of the best classes they've ever had. I used the book's suggestions every step of the way and I now recommend it to everyone who has any kind of training or presentation on the horizon.

Update: July 03: Over a year later, this book CONTINUES to inspire me. I've found I truly love training, and even though it's not my main job function, my feedback has been so good, I am now being sent around the world to conduct training! I'm even going to conduct a train-the-trainer class, and I'm using this book as my textbook. One of the things that really stands out to me in this book is the friendly style of the authors. They WANT to teach you, WANT you to be successful...I've adopted their style in the classroom with great results. Buy this book and you won't be sorry!

4-0 out of 5 stars Training Text Review
Training and Development Book Review The Instant Trainer; Quick Tips on How to Teach Others What You Know By: C. Leslie Charles and Chris Clarke-Epstein

The Instant Trainer, by C. Leslie Charles and Chris Clarke-Epstein is ideal for use with developing and presenting training modules. It provides practical information, advice, tips, and techniques for new trainers. The content is relevant and valuable to a trainer who does not have experience in the field. My assessment of the material is a positive one. The material is sensible, easily understood, and organized clearly. There is enough information without the reader being overwhelmed. The real-life examples help interpret and reinforce pivotal concepts. The topics covered are fundamental to training, but important issues that might be less obvious to a novice are addresses from a seasoned trainer's perspective. My only negative critique is that in the second half of the book, the pretend "advice letters" were over used. Key points were presented in the letters, and there were just too many of them. Cutting down their frequency and only using them to reinforce and reiterate key ideas would have been more effective. The focuses of The Instant Trainer can be broken into four components: FAQ's, techniques, advice, and tools. The FAQ issues cover such issues as, what is in a training session, how to get people to participate, learning assessments, and what to do about difficult trainees. Access to this information can be very beneficial to a new trainer because without the book, achieving an understanding of these insights would require extensive fieldwork and time-consuming training experience. The training techniques discussed include; teaching methods, learning methods, understanding trainees, paying attention, and incorporating fun into the training session. This information is useful to trainers with limited education in general training principals.

The third component of material in The Instant Trainer is the "behind-the-scenes advice." These suggestions and recommendations cover everything from presentation delivery skills to identifying and organizing material. Five factors affecting the success of every training session are examined, as well as advise on how to identify early warning signs of disaster or success. The last section of The Instant Trainer deals entirely with providing the reader with training tools. There are checklists for the trainer to use before, during, and after a presentation, and numerous tips on all aspects of audience participation. A list of eleven resources and 45 general training books is included. The section closes with two sample evaluation forms for the trainees to fill out assessing the effectiveness of the trainer and the course. The Instant Trainer is a valuable resource for any new trainer. The practical information and real-life illustrations of the issues discussed make this training and development textbook so effective. I not only appreciated the concise explanation of the fundamental concepts about training, but I also relied on the tips, tools, and advice while developing and presenting my own training module.

5-0 out of 5 stars Useful Advice for New Trainers
The first time someone has to train coworkers, there are lots of questions about how to do it. "How should I handle stage fright?" "How can I jazz up a dry topic?" "If only there were an advice columnist who could help me out." With this book, there are advice columnists for new trainers: Leslie Charles and Chris Clarke-Epstein.

Part I, only 35 pages long, is titled "What Every First-Time Trainer Needs to Know (Critical Factors That Can Make or Break You!)." This section is a crash course on how adults learn.

Part II, titled "Questions and Answers on Training Basics," is 186 pages of pure experience-sharing. The question/answer format makes for easy reading--the questions are a paragraph long, and the answers are concise but information-packed. This format has another advantage: when a new trainer wants information on a specific subject ("Is there some strategy for using humour in training?"), he or she need only read one or two pages on that specific question, then get on with the job of preparing for the training. The well-done index makes it simple to find the topics quickly.

The appendices are a gold mine for someone new to training. They include resource lists and contact information, an excellent bibliography, and even sample evaluation forms.

This book is usable, readable, and the content is dead-on. When non-trainers or new trainers ask me for a resource, this is the first book I suggest. ... Read more
