From the supplier: The desirability of various policies designed to counteract the distorting nature of an equilibrium rural-urban wage differential in a small, two-sector economy with urban unemployment was investigated. A labor market model with an efficiency wage in the urban sector and urban unemployment was analyzed for the distributional and national output effects of an urban wage subsidy, a tariff on the urban good and an urban production subsidy. Findings showed that a small urban wage or production subsidy raises the value of national output and overall efficiency.

From the supplier: Until the 1990s, poverty was an unfamiliar concept to Russian social scientists. The Soviet system recognized only "persons not sufficiently provided for" - a purely economic issue to be dealt with through the system's redistributed mechanisms. As a result of economic reform, however, living standards have collapsed, income differentials are widening and perceptions of poverty are changing. Examining these developments in terms of emerging unemployment, the official minimum subsistence level and vulnerable social groups, the author concludes that Russia's poor are becoming socially marginalized. This trend, she argues, calls for a strong social policy, active measures for employment creation and, possibly, rapid restructuring of employment even at the risk of a temporary surge in unemployment. Book Description

This book helps explain one of the most intriguing and politically salient puzzles in comparative political economy: why some countries have much higher unemployment rates than others. Contrary to new classical economics the focus is on explaining distribution and equilibrium unemployment, and contrary to neo-corporatist theory the role of monetary policy and rational expectation is integral to the analysis. The book makes two central arguments. The first is that monetary policies affect equilibrium employment whenever wages are set above the firm level. The second argument focuses on the distributive effects of different institutions, and models institutional design as a strategic game between partisan governments and cross-class alliances of unions and employers. ... Book Description

Informal Employment in Advanced Economies challenges many of the popular myths surrounding informal economic activities. This book tackles the popular belief that informal employment is growing throughout the advanced economies; it challenges the myth that this work is undertaken mostly by marginalized groups such as the unemployed, poor and immigrants; itevaluates the dominant view that we should replace informal with formal employment through enforcement of stringent laws and regulations. Examining policy options and their consequences, the authors show that conventional regulatory and deregulatory approaches merely exacerbate inequalities and a radical alternative solution, grounded in a "new economics" vision of the future of work and welfare is essential. ... Book Description

Out of Work, the first book to chronicle the history of unemployment in the United States traces the evolution of the problem of joblessness from the early decades of the nineteenth century to the Great Depression of the 1930s. Challenging the widely held notion that the United States was a labour-scarce society in which jobs were plentiful, it argues that unemployment played a major role in American history long before the crash of the stock market in 1929. Focusing on the state of Massachusetts, Professor Kevssar analyses the economic and social changes that gave birth to the modern concept of unemployment. Drawing on previously untapped sources - including richly detailed statistics and vivid verbatim testimony - he demonstrates that joblessness was a pervasive feature of working-class life from the 1870s to the 1920s. The book describes the ingenious, yet personally costly, strategies that unemployed workers devised to cope with the joblessness in the absence of formal governmental assistance. It also explores the many dimensions of working-class life that were profoundly affected by recurrent lay-offs and the chronic uncertainty of work. Finally, it demonstrates that the fundamental contours of the Massachusetts experience were repeated, sooner or later, throughout the United States. ... Read more

Book Description

Going beyond slogans and superficial explanations, the authors analyze the reasons why so many jobs disappeared from the Canadian economy in the 1990s.

Drawing on the results of a major three-year research project, the authors offer 25 case studies of Canadian companies from five key sectors of the economy. Included are examples from the resource sector, manufacturing, the low-wage service sector, information services and the public sector. Their findings permit them to suggest concrete steps that can be taken to remedy job losses.

Vanishing Jobs is an in-depth study of Canadian business and labour-market trends in the 1990s.

Book Description

This is the first comprehensive and up-to-date study of the contribution of women and men to changing European economic activity patterns covering all fifteen members states. Based on the work of the European Commission's network of experts on women's employment, it draws on both national and European data sources. The book links trends in the structures of employment with new comparative data on the role of systems of welfare provision in order to explore economic activity patterns by gender. Participation patterns of women still vary widely within Europe, so much attention is paid to the institutions--both in the labour market and welfare--which help to explain these variations. ... Book Description

Teleworking has long been proclaimed as a revolution in working practices for the 21st century. Teleworking: International Perspectives offers an up-to-date, groundbreaking and comprehensive assessment in light of the rapidly changing contexts of the globaliation of markets and the proliferation of new technologies. Based upon papers presented at a conference at Brunel University, which was sponsored by BT and the European Commission, the book features contributions from a range of international and interdisciplinary perspectives. As well as an original analysis of the theoretical context of the post-industrial and postmodern world, the book also contains detailed empirical studies examining telworking in a number of different countries. Contributors explore many of the main issues in teleworking drawing on insights from business, economics, sociology and information systems. These include conceptualizing teleworking; the management of spatial, temporal and cultural boundaries; and the possibility of the virtual organization. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent overview of research for in-depth study
A well-structured collection of empirical research-based articles which provide useful background reading for any academic or advanced student. A variety of mostly European sources make it more relevant and applicable than most US based journal articles and books. Not really suitable for "dissection" or for students below Honours level, as much of the theory is not self contained, and requires considerable academic underpinning. I have found it indispensable, however, for my teaching of ICT-enabled organisational innovations to third and fourth Business Information Management undergraduates.

4-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive survey of the state of the art
Paul Jackson and Jos van der Wielen are researchers and lecturers with deep experience of investigating and analysing telework. In this book they have assembled and edited contributions by some 20 experts from a wide range of disciplines to produce the most comprehensive perspective on the subject available to date. Each chapter has a complete set of references, making this a valuable start point for new research, as well as an important record of the state of the art in telework-related studies at the end of the twentieth century. ...
