Book Description

No More Heroines deals with the changes in the image of Russian women in the imaginations that occurred after the collapse of Soviet rule and the emergence of independent Russia. The robust tractor drivers and athletes have been replaced by glamorous but vulnerable beauty queens or the disheveled woman trading goods on the street. This book takes a close look at what lies behind these images and how Russian women are coping with a very difficult sort of life. It looks at effect of unemployment on Russian women, how they are coping with it and the problems they face in the emerging Russian labor market. It explores the response of the state, a range of women's organizations and of individual women themselves to the new situation. ... Read more

Book Description

Working for Full Employment considers the feasibility of full employment in a modern market economy. It draws upon contributions from experienced labor market experts and public policy analysts who were pivotal in pushing full employment up the political agenda in the mid-1990s. Identifying the hard choices which policy makers must face, they examine the effects of new technology and increased trade, the increased participation of women in the labor market, the impact of labor market regulation on employment, how welfare reform can help the long-term unemployed into jobs, and reform of pay bargaining. The book's central arguments are also relevant to concepts of "social cohesion" and the "stakeholder economy" which are set to become dominant political themes in the next few years. ... Read more

Book Description

As the need to confront unplanned growth increases, planners, policymakers, and citizens are scrambling for practical tools and examples of successful and workable approaches. Growth management initiatives are underway in the U.S. at all levels, but many American "success stories" provide only one piece of the puzzle. To find examples of a holistic approach to dealing with sprawl, one must turn to models outside of the United States. In Green Urbanism, Timothy Beatley explains what planners and local officials in the United States can learn from the sustainable city movement in Europe. The book draws from the extensive European experience, examining the progress and policies of twenty-five of the most innovative cities in eleven European countries, which Beatley researched and observed in depth during a year-long stay in the Netherlands. Chapters examine:

  • the sustainable cities movement in Europe
  • examples and ideas of different housing and living options
  • transit systems and policies for promoting transit use, increasing bicycle use, and minimizing the role of the automobile
  • creative ways of incorporating greenness into cities
  • ways of readjusting "urban metabolism" so that waste flows become circular
  • programs to promote more sustainable forms of economic development
  • sustainable building and sustainable design measures and features
  • renewable energy initiatives and local efforts to promote solar energy
  • ways of greening the many decisions of local government including ecological budgeting, green accounting, and other city management tools.

Throughout, Beatley focuses on the key lessons from these cities-including Vienna, Helsinki, Copenhagen, Stockholm, Zurich, Amsterdam, London, Berlin, and others-and what their experience can teach us about effectively and creatively promoting sustainable development in the United States. Green Urbanism is the first full-length book to describe urban sustainability in European cities, and provides concrete examples and detailed discussions of innovative and practical sustainable planning ideas. It will be a useful reference and source of ideas for urban and regional planners, state and local officials, policymakers, students of planning and geography, and anyone concerned with how cities can become more livable. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Seperates truth from fiction
The Trade-Off Myth: Fact and Fiction About Jobs and the Environment (Eban Goodstein, Island Press, 1999) Goodstein looks at several claims about jobs and the environment, and finds them all to be false: that regulations cause economy wide loss of jobs, that they devastate local economies, that they create pollution havens, that environmental regulations will generate large numbers of new jobs, and that efforts to control global warming will cause massive losses of jobs. Well written and highly recommended. ... Read more

Book Description

Preventing Unemployment in Europe is an interdisciplinary volume offering an effective and authoritative contribution to the ongoing debate concerning the utility of preventive labor market policies. Positive labor market performance is discussed from a European perspective and analyzed against the background of transferability in an era of increasing globalization of markets. Concentrating particularly on the role of corporatist and market processes, the book focuses on the effects of preventive unemployment through the comparison of innovative and flexible policy solutions.

Some of the fundamental issues the book tackles include the extent to which the conditional framework for preventive labor market policy is undergoing change, the response mechanisms to these changes which characterize national strategies and the learning processes which can be triggered through the exchange of national experiences within the EU. The discussions within the book benefit from both an economic analysis of the subject matter complemented by a broader social science approach.

The editors, themselves distinguished scholars in this field, have produced a comprehensive resource which should prove invaluable reading for both policymakers and academics in the fields of labor market theory and policy. ... Read more
