3-0 out of 5 stars Bigger than life....a Texas legend...
Marvin Leonard was a merchant with a flair that will probably never be seen in today's world of "cookie cutter" department stores. His store was a unique place, where tradition and modern convenience blended beautifully. It's too bad that his pioneer Fort Worth store no longer exists. The book chronicles the glory days of a store, the likes of which, recall a time when shopping downtown was fun! ... Read more

Book Description

David A. Westbrook argues that we live in "the city of gold"--a global, cosmopolitan polity where politics are done through markets, and where global capital markets, not states, have become the dominant force in our social life. In this wide-ranging, multi-tiered exploration of our contemporary global political economy, he touches on four major themes: the historical foundation of the city of gold, an assessment of its political scope, its current discontents, and ways to make a better--albeit imperfect--world from within it. ... Book Description

The economic restructuring that has gone on since the 1980s has produced a new economic space in which service and high tech firms are at the forefront of innovation. One of the features of the new economy is what pop geographer Joel Kotkin calls "nerdistans," or smaller cities with a substantial high tech sector, limits on growth, environmentally friendly policies and a generally well-educated population. In New Money, Nice Town, Leonard Nevarez takes a close look at how "new economy" firms in "quality of life" cities interact with local political structures, finding that they are both more liberal and more detached than their traditional counterparts. This new global economy has created communities whose politics are more democratic, but also more tenuous and unstable. ... Book Description

This book examines the economic reasons why people choose to live where they live and develops, through analysis of the bid rent function, a unified theory of urban land use and city size. The first part of the book explicates the basic theory of urban land use and optimal city size. Residential location behavior of households is examined in a microeconomic framework and equilibrium and optimal patterns of residential land use are discussed. The corresponding equilibrium and optimal city sizes are studied in a variety of contexts. Part Two extends the classical theories of von Thunen and Alonso with the addition of externality factors such as local public goods, crowding and congestion, and racial prejudice. The rigorous mathematical approach and theoretical treatment of the material make Urban Economic Theory of interest to researchers in urban economics, location theory, urban geography, and urban planning. ... Book Description

This book presents pioneering work on an interregional input–output table of the Chinese economy and its applications to the analysis of interregional and interindustrial relations in China. It is the fruit of the authors' joint efforts of more than five years to establish a solid basis for the analysis of interregional relations in China, in the hope of laying the foundation for further studies of regional development in that country.

The book endeavors to make a contribution to the regional typology of the Chinese economy. The Chinese provinces are classified into seven large regions. The interregional input–output table is constructed accordingly.

Chapter I describes the methodology for producing this interregional input–output (IRIO) table. Chapter II presents the (IRIO) table after a brief explanation of the Chinese statistical data needed for the compilation of the table. Chapter III explains the basis of seven large regions adopted for the IRIO table. Chapter IV deals with the interdependence of regions and the effects of the changes in some parameters of one region on the activities in other regions. Chapter V, the last chapter, applies the IRIO table to policy analysis. ... Read more

The world of modern capitalism is a global network both of corporations and of cities - 'world command cities' such as New York, London and Tokyo; 'specialized command cities' which concentrate on particular industries, such as Detroit; 'state command cities' such as Washington and Brasilia; and so on.These cities, linked by an organizational web of transnational corporations, are the pins holding the capitalist world economy together in the new international division of labour. In The Capitalist City a group of eminent scholars analyzes the intricate relationships among cities, state policies and urban politics at a time of economic restructuringat global, national and local levels to provide an original and timely contribution to one of the most important areas of political and social science. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome guide for getting your business funded!
An extremely helpful book. The title of this book reflects the frustration entrepreneurs face while seeking capital in the financial arena. I found the book not only helpful in outlining the preparation of a comprehensive business plan, but also what to expect when presenting it to a financier. It provides a synopsis on the various types of lenders; how and why they will view your project. It gives a step by step outline on how to write a plan capable of raising capital. It also provides you with a track to run on that will help you grow your business.

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST READ FOR EVERY ENTREPRENEUR !!!!

It is a humorous journey of the life of someone that is always chasing the deal. Bonus: There is even a Business Plan at the back of the book that anyone can follow. ... Read more

Book Description

Hello, I'm Rick Blunt. This "conversation" is about making "Communities of Practice" more understandable and accessible.I've been dealing with Communities of Practice for the better part of three decades.Yet, if you asked me as recently as five years ago what a Community of Practice was, I would have been clueless. What that means, is that Communities of Practice are already all around you.You may be already part of one and not even know it.The concept that drove home to me how subtly pervasive Communities of Practice are, is the concept of "Peer-to-Peer" or P2P.P2P became popularized with the file swapping technology phenomenon started by Napster.Since Napster, other P2P applications followed such as KaZaA, Gnutella, Morpheus, Groove Networks, and many more. So, what does P2P have to do with Communities of Practice, Learning Networks and the "Speed of Business?"Communities of Practice are about finding and participating with other "equal" professionals (P2P) to help everyone in the community learn from each other (learning networks) how to do their jobs better in today's fast-paced, "Internet-speed" work environment (Speed of Business). ... Book Description

Cities play a growing role in governing. This new role fits within a context that nation-states, global market forces and cities themselves continue to define. The analysis of this book focuses on how local efforts in the distinct European systems of France and Germany as well as American counterparts have provided for environmental quality and social inclusion alongside local economic development.Only in certain European settings has policy making at multiple levels accomplished all three objectives at once.In those settings, effective governance from below has relied on adequate support from higher levels of governments and a favorable position in the global economy. ...
