5-0 out of 5 stars Focuses on fundamentals and provides good applications
This books focuses on the fundamentals of electric circuits. It walks students very carefully through the basics of electric circuits. What I liked in particular was that the book provides examples of things like: "why would you place resistors in parallel" or "why would you place resistors in a series".

It has a CD in the back that I haven't tried yet, but looks interesting. The CD has more experiments with circuits using a simulator or two.

5-0 out of 5 stars A First Rate Guide
Within its sphere of discussion, this is the best reference manual of its type. There is a lot not here concerning RF and power, but it's not an RF or power book. Steve Lampen is about the most knowledgeable 'wire man' around and this book should go with you each time you visit your local High End audio saloon or any other vendor of these products.

5-0 out of 5 stars Small package - HUGE resource of information!
It is easy to see why Steve Lampen is such an esteemed author and lecturer and one of the most respected cable engineers in the industry. Steve Lampen does an excellent job of describing cables and their applications. Starting with the basics of the construction of the wire, Steve describes everything from the conductor's base metal to the insulation and shielding to the applications most appropriate for each cable. He defines all of the important wire specifications and gives you a much better sense of which type of cables are most appropriate for you application. While the book is very technical in scope, Steve makes the complex topics interesting and readable. It is filled with helpful charts, graphs and tables - color codes, NEC fire codes, resistance tables, dielectric constants and more.

So much information is packed into this book that I consider it the best 400 pages of knowledge you can carry in your pocket! This is a must-have book for anyone interested in ANY aspect of cable installation or home-theater hookup. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Digital Electronics made easy and fun!
This book is fantastic. The two included PCBs were a joy to build and are very helpful when doing lab experiments. This book would appeal to an absolute electronics beginner as well as an expert. The projects are fun and very educational. Two thumbs up!

3-0 out of 5 stars Typo's Galore
I think the idea behind this book is fantastic and if there wern't so many typos and mistakes in the diagrams and project schematics it would be a 5 star book.

The ground and power bus is mislabeld in almost every project. Some of the projects won't run without fixing the bugs in the diagrams.

If there is a second edition, hopefully these issues will be resolved.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent but marred with typos
This is an excellent book for neophytes like me. Unfortunately, it is marred by a surprisingly large number of typos, like many of Mr. Predko's books.

Part of this is because he reuses large blocks of text in his many publications w/o really matching up figures with text, etc. He doesn't always match numbers on his printed circuit boards with the text. Perhaps these errors sneak in between editions. Most of these are so obvious there is no problem making out what he meant. Still, I worry that there are typos which I don't recognize.

The printed circuit boards are excellent with plated through holes. Even an inexperienced solderer like me can do a neat job easily and quickly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another great book my Mr. Predko
I just put in a review for "Programming and Customizing PICMicro MCUs" and I realized that I should also put in a few words about this book - Mr. Predko has really come up with an outstanding book for working with basic digital electronics (TTL).

I graduated from university over ten years ago and while I understood the theory behind TTL, I feel like my understanding of how it works by this book. It really ties together theory with practice adn even shows you hot to create a TTL inverter from transistors!

5-0 out of 5 stars TTL from the bottom up
I have a couple of myke's books (PIC, 8051) and this one is quite a departure from the normal run of the mill "microcontroller" books that he does. The book is devoted to explaining digital logic and he does a really good job and approaches it from a direction that I've never seen before.

For example, I've never seen anybody actually build a TTL gate out of discrete transistors and resistors before. This was really helpful for me - I've never really understood how the built in pull ups in a TTL gate worked before I read this book.

Myke has really latched onto the idea of including PCBs in his books and the power supply/TTL interface is really helpful to get the reader started in working with TTL. What I have always liked about Mykes books is that he really tries to provide circuits that the reader can build easily. With the power supply/interface PCBs included in the book, creating the experiments just takes a few moments. This is really nice.

4-0 out of 5 stars Mastering Audio...
If you buy this book and reread it 4 times, you'll come out better of than buying 5 separate books about mastering. Mastering is a true art and if some book tells you exactly how and where to apply your "enhancements" to improve your sound, avoid it. I've been mastering on the cheap with just a "sound forge" mastering software with a 16bit computer. Working off of old tapes from all the bands I've been in, it's been a pretty steep learning curve mastering these tapes to cd. This book is good as a reference, what you're looking for is easy to find. Dither, wordlengh, editing, compression, reverb and all that other stuff is explained well and provides for deeper understanding when reread. I've got my money's worth and am still learning from it.

5-0 out of 5 stars REALLY GOOD!!!
This book is really one of the best on the subject. It may be a little complicated if you don't have background in digital music because all the terms involved, but other than that it's a masterpiece. This book for sure will also be a reference manual for me, not because it's formatted like one, but because it has so many valuable pieces of information. The constant references to further chapters kinda drives you crazy and tempts you to jump to those chapters. All the information is so exciting, I read more than 100 pages non stop... If you're into details and want to learn a few well kept secrets this book is what you should have by your side on your next mastering session.

4-0 out of 5 stars Stay away from it if you are looking for hard-and-fast rules
I bought this book after reading many good reviews. After reading it, I would say that it is indeed a very interesting book, there are a lot of "obscure areas" that the author dares to tackle, with a remarkable "scientific" approach.

BUT, before you buy this book...It's not a "funny" reading, you should get this book if you are already familiar with all the technical subjects covered, the author seems to assume a certain previous knowledge, otherwise you won't go past chapter 1. AND, for all of you cookbook lovers, forget it, you are not bound to find those here.

That being said, I have it, and I like it. I'll probably re read it sometime in the future.

5-0 out of 5 stars if you want a deeper understanding of audio
and a deeper respect for mastering engineers then READ THIS BOOK. this book walks you through the disecting audio to different types of audio. it takes you from handing over your mix to the mastering engineer to what it's going to sound like once it hits the shelf. it's not really a "how to" book. it's a "why you need a qualified mastering engineer" book. don't think you're going to master like bob by the time you read this book.... honestly to really understand what's going on you're probably going to have to read the book more than once. it's a deep book, giving you deep understanding of "the art and science of mastering audio."

3-0 out of 5 stars Difficult to understand..
I relied upon the several positive reviews on this book but I was a bit disappointed. Yes, the book does have an incredible amount of information. It does explain very thoroughly all the concepts, acronyms and just about everything else. The only problem here is it's almost too much.

I purchased this book with the intention of learning how to master properly by using a compressor effectively, making my mix punchier, etc. This book talks about all of those things but in such a round-about way that it's far from a step-by-step guide to mastering. This is more of the history of mastering, how it has changed in the studio, and how you need to be extremely technically proficient to really even follow what he's saying half the time. For example, he breaks out into a long discussion comparing mastering on 24-bit versus 16-bit and how you need to account for differences mathematically, how changing the sampling rate from 48khz to 44.1Khz needs to be corrected,e tc. These are all very valid and useful things to know but I was not able to find any step-by-step tutorials. The reason why they don't exist here is because the author does not believe there is any one approach to mastering, and that there is no magical formula. I can understand that too, but I need something to point me in the right direction. For example, if he told me that cutting ##Hz frequencies and boosting ##Khz frequencies typically provide a "punchy" mix, at least I would have a reference point for what he's talking about. There is simply no such thing here. Maybe I'm asking too much but I really would have liked to have a CD-ROM with examples and explanations of the various tweaks he talks about.

Overall, this is a good book, but far from a "Mastering For Dummies" type of book. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Aubin's Mastering ADT very thorough and easy to follow
Paul's book, after working through the Comprehensive Tutorial by H. Edward Goldberg, is like reading Proust in English for an English as a first language speaker compared to reading Proust in French for an English as a first language speaker. The steps are small enough that a person who is new to the program can follow along without difficulty. Plus, Paul's accessibility is invaluable.
Great resource and learning tool.
The reviewer who said there must be a better book out there somewhere might consider writing one for the office in which he/she works so as to have one to recommend for new employees.
I, too, would be interested in reviewing the new attempt.

4-0 out of 5 stars Help at Last for the CADaphobes!
I'm an architect who's worked with CAD for 10 years...got dragged into using it, literally kicking and screaming!! I needed 3D capabilities to stay competitive, but the thought of learning another CAD program struck terror in the very marrow of my bones! I took took hours and hours of classroom and on-line classes to try to learn ADT and VIZRender, and I feel like it was money up in smoke. Out of sheer desperation I bought Aubin's book, and have found it to be one of the....no, THE clearest, most straightforward CAD guide I've ever, ever, EVER read!!Starting with the basics, and guiding the reader through step-by-step tutorials in plain, non-technical language, Aubin has developed a guide that even a technophobe can clearly understand.

I'd give the book a full 5-star, but it's a little lacking in trouble shooting. If things don't work out the way they're supposed to, it would be helpful to have some suggestions on what might be wrong.

After only one day of working through the guide, I could design a simple building in 3-D. After a full week, the sunshine was pouring through the windows. Well worth the money.

1-0 out of 5 stars Could have used an editor and some better examples.
After working with various versions of AutoCad for the last 7 years, this was my first introduction to Architectural Desktop. I have worked my way through this book over the last week. It is quite possibly the LEAST-well-written Cad book I have ever used. Paragraphs are repeated, steps are skipped over, words are missing in the middle of sentences.

The tutorials give you the false impression that you are accomplishing something, without teaching you how to apply the concepts to the actual projects you will be required to work on in the real world. One man in my office described the tutorials this way: "It's like 'This Old House', Bob takes the camera crew into the bathroom as Norm finishes caulking the tub. Bob turns to the camera and tells you that now you too can remodel your bathroom."

There has to be a better book out there on this program. I just don't know what it is. Don't spend your money on this, take your chances on some other book. Best of Luck.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Resource
When I have a question, I go to the Aubin book first. The help menu and the official Autodesk books never have as much of what I need.

5-0 out of 5 stars Learn ADT2004 from the Master
I am new to ADT and Mastering ADT2004 was recommended to me by others that had used Paul's other books. I have not been disappointed. This book is so easy to follow and learn from. It is a real pleasure to be using this book while learning ADT. The methods he uses to introduce the different features of the program are very well done. The step by step instructions are very detailed with plenty of illustrations to make sure you know you are understanding what he has written.

I also am enjoying the real world exercises that are used in the book as you are working and learning while following along. The CD that came with the book has the files needed to follow along with the instruction and the software loaded perfectly and is well organized.

I was even able to send an email to the author asking an additional question and received an answer in a few minutes. This is not something that is offered as part of buying the book, but I was impressed that I not only got a response, but that it was from Paul himself and was so timely.

I can't imagine a better book for learning ADT2004. Highly recommended. ... Read more

Book Description

Principles of Electronic Materials and Devices, Second Edition, is a greatly enhanced version of the highly successful text Principles of Electrical Engineering Materials and Devices. It is designed for a first course on electronic materials given in Electrical Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, and Physics Departments at the undergraduate level.

The second edition has numerous revisions, additional sections such as "Phonons" and "Optoelectronic Materials and Devices", more solved problems, and a completely new chapter on "Optical Properties of Materials". The revisions have improved the rigor without sacrificing the original semiquantitative approach that the students liked. For example, the thermoelectric effect now includes the Mott-Jones index (x) which is normally treated at the graduate level but has been introduced here through a semiquantitative discussion to explain the true sign of the Seebeck coefficient in metals (one of the most difficult graduate topics in quantum mechanics of metals). The problems have also been updated and various difficult figures have been redrafted to enhance the pedagogy.

The second edition includes the Electronic Materials and Devices CD-ROM. The CD includes color overhead transparency diagrams that can be printed by instructors and students on any color printer; an illustrated dictionary of electronic materials and devices; numerous selected topics and solved problems.

The text with its Selected Topics can also serve as a first course in Materials Science aimed at electrical engineers and engineering physics students. It is suitable for both one- and two-semester courses. By focusing only on those topics relevant to materials that make up electronic and optoelectronic devices, the book offers students a deeper and more meaningful discussion of this material than is offered in general materials science textbooks. The coverage is up-to-date and the applications are of special relevance to students of electronics, materials science and engineering physics. The solutions manual for the second edition is available from the publisher, the McGraw-Hill website and also from the author's website at http://ElectronicMaterials.Usask.CA. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars I think its a good book !
I had engineering science program years ago , but not much electrial circuits- just the basics. I bought this book for self-study. I read through the first eight chapters and worked a lot of the problems without much problem. I then read the chapters on the smaller electric motors and some about controls. Its not a begineers self-study book. If you have the background you can learn from this book;however, I had to read some of the material over several times to understand it. I still didn't feel like I had a good understanding about the basics of electric motors. Like how to wire them up, how to read the nameplate and so forth. This book is for the classroom and lab. It has a lot of information. My local university uses it in their technology program for three different courses I think.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and Complete
I am delighted to have found this text. I find it the most comprehensive, complete and up-to-date text on electrical machinery, power distribution and transmission, etc., that I've seen. It does an esppecially outstanding job of presenting harmonics and harmonic effects on modern power systems. Kudos to the author!

3-0 out of 5 stars NO INDEPENDANT STUDY'S HERE
This book has considerable information for advanced studies, but is lacking more down to earth presentation. It needs more simplified terminology. This is not a book for a first year colledge student.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent blend of practical and theoretical.
This text is well organized and presents a wide range of topics in sufficient detail for many engineers and managers. Pictures and diagrams of equipment are abundant, as are electrical equations, waveforms, and phasor diagrams. Historical perspectives and advantages/disadvantages are included. It is surprising for one text to contain such breadth and depth, including transformers, motors, generators, controls, power electronics, utility systems, and harmonics. It was one of two books used in preparation for, and during, the PE exam; it continues to be a learning tool and reference. ... Read more

Book Description

Digital Compositing for Film and Video is a hands-on, practical, how-to guide that addresses the problems and difficult choices faced by the professional compositor in real-life situations. It presents techniques, tricks, and solutions for dealing with badly shot elements, coloration artifacts, and mismatched lighting that bedevil actual compositors working on real shots. Readers are offered in-depth practical methods for matte extraction, despill procedures, compositing operations, and color correction--the "meat and potatoes" of all digital effects.

Compositing is the artistic blending of several disparate elements from a variety of sources into a single image while making all the component elements appear to be in the same light space and shot with the same camera. When confronted with a bad composite any observer will recognize that something is wrong--the artist will know what is causing the problem, and the technician will know how to fix it. A good compositor must be both an artist and a technician.

Written by a senior compositor with over ten years' experience in both feature film and broadcast television, this book offers a broad range of alternative solutions that will save hours of fiddling with composites trying to get them to look right when the basic tools aren't working. A companion CD-ROM provides examples of the many topics covered in this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Concise technical information!
I really struggled through the first chapter, but after that is stared to make more sense. This book is very technical, and many topics like 10-bit logarithmic color are definitely complex concepts, but generally the author does an excellent job of explaining them as simply as possible.

Explanations for what is happening 'under the hood' of a lot of compositing tools are explained, as well as how to achieve them manually. Stuff like keying, despill, unsharp mask, and defocus operations. I've read the 2 other main compositing textbooks available on Amazon.com, I would say this is definitely better than "Digital Compositing In Depth", and slightly better than "The Art & Science of Digital Compositing". It's definitely the most detailed and technical of the 3 books.

I wouldn't recommend this for a beginner, it'd be more suited to someone who has composited for a few years and wants to better understand the underlying concepts of their compositing software.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous resource.
The author has done a great job of taking most if not all the tricks and tips and combined them into one excellent book.
Film and Video is completely explained and the reader gets a great idea why they are so completely different.
This book is an A+ must have for anyone wanting to know more about the compositing process.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best compositing books out there...
If you consider yourself an upper intermediate level user or less, I'd recommend this book. Among many other things that it does quite well, it explains what procedural keyers like Primatte are doing and shows you how to accomplish the same kinds of processes manually. You will know what each of the many keyers in After Effects (and other compositing apps) are doing and the logic behind each. You will also learn where best to use each based on the situation at hand. It also takes you through many other areas like matte extraction, despill procedures and color correction. After reading it, you will understand scientifically what is going on under the hood of your favorite imaging and video apps. To me, this is the "Photoshop Channel Chops" of 2001. What David Biedny's legendary PCC book did for Photoshop artists a decade or so ago, this book will do for compositors today. I have seen other books handle this subject, some do it well but none as good as this one. Well-written and very easy to understand -- though there are definitely places where you will have to reread passages to understand what's being said. But if you commit to reading it with more than a cursory perusal, you'll walk away a master. Highly recommended. Five Cows.

3-0 out of 5 stars Too many errors and no errata
The book is decent - better than a few I have purchased but suffers from a common failing in technical books - it is repleat with errors. Really, a book which is used by some in technical schools or colleges should have only a few errors at most. This book has scores of errors, which makes learning very difficult. Like most subjects if you intend to teach yourself, you will need three or four references including PLC manuals in order to resolve the many ambiguous diagrams and statements in the text...

4-0 out of 5 stars Great teaching material
I teach electricians about PLCs and use this book as the class textbook. It has very good coverage of the subject. There are other books that are less costly and cover the same basic material (but not in the same depth that this book does).

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent PLC Book
Stenerson's book is an exellent introduction to the subject of Programmable Logic Controllers. He uses several of the major brands in his discussion of automation. The book is not designed to make one fluent with one particular PLC, but rather to give one basic knowledge which is applicable to all brands of PLCs.

I teach PLCs at a technical college and have been using Stenerson's book for the last couple years - what a great text. Although its somewhat expensive, I feel that it is a great value. ... Read more
