Book Description

CCTV for Security Professionals provides the information necessary to design the ideal CCTV system. The chapters are stand-alone sources of information on their subjects and are presented in logical sequence to guide the reader from basic principles to more complex for a complete system understanding.

In his straight-forward and informative text, Alan Matchett approaches the camera systems from the user's point of view, providing the security manager with the knowledge to discuss the system, its desired features, and the areas of design concern within the context of an organization's business model. This can prove to be invaluable when evaluating an existing system, the use and components of a given system, or in evaluating a system design proposed by a vendor.

Installers and service personnel will benefit from the functions and possibilities that are available with the various components and by gaining an understanding of their customers' needs.Newer technicians will learn how to set up the system properly, and can familiarize themselves with the technologies that go into a CCTV system.

Security equipment sales personnel will also gain a better knowledge of the customer's needs as well as learn to determine exactly what questions they should be asking the customer and what the customer's responses mean. In this manner, the book will offer invaluable tips to ensure customers get exactly what they expect in a system.

* Provides a detailed explanation of CCTV components and the technology behind analog and digital CCTV systems.
* Establishes a "common language" for security professionals, CCTV system designers and sales personnel to use as a basis for system design.
* Provides a clear explanation of the design process and design principles.

1-0 out of 5 stars Out of date
Has a lot of good background, but if you are looking for in-depth information about the Pentium family, you should likely skip this book. The "Pentium and Pentium Pro" chapter starts page 753, "Pentium II, III and 4" starts page 783, and "Appendixes" star page 802, meaning 30 pages and 19 pages respectively on the last two Intel processor families.

Several references in the book state things like "just introduced" or "this year", but were obviously from early editions.

I recognize how hard it is to keep up to date - The current (as of this writing) architecture documents from Intel on IA-32e and AMD for AMD64 are several thousands of pages and free for download. Of course, I never expected 64 bit architecture discussion in this book, but but I was looking for a narrative that would set the base and context of modern 32 bit implementations.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very detail oriented, complete and good reference
I have read the first 140 pages of this book, and I really like it. So far, I have the following comments.
Good points:
1.) It covers both real and protected mode from the start. Other books wait until the middle of the books before they cover protected mode.
2.) Assembly language command mechanism are explained in great detail. The author explain exactly what's going on. How the data moved from memory to register, register to register, how the memory in a computer is organized, how exactly PUSH and POP command works etc. There are lots of diagram that illustrate his explanations.
3.) It covers from 8086 to Pentium II hardware architecture. Many books are strictly limited to outdated 8086 and 8088 processors.
4.) The exercises at the end of each chapter increases my understanding of the subject and answers to even numbered problems are available at the end of the book.

Bad Points:
1.)Assembly language and processor architecture are hard subjects. You have to read each chapter several times before you can get a good grasp of the topic.
2.)Some of the topic presented by the authors can not be easily understood until you read the subsequent chapters.

One suggestion for people who read the book: Make sure you know how to convert binary, hexadecimal and decimal number. You have to know these otherwise you can get lost. Some basic understanding of logic gates is also helpfull!

2-0 out of 5 stars Unhelpful and Scattered
I'm currently studying Electronic Engineering, and this is our recommended text for the introduction to assembly module. I find i can't use the book as it does not lay out any subject clearly. Often parts of the language are used in examples then introduced and explained many pages later. If starting you have to get at least one other book.

5-0 out of 5 stars This Book is a must for Hardware Freaks
My teacher used this book in our Electronics Engineering course few year back, it was some old edition. Since then I wanted to buy this book, but I couldn't find it in decent price. Few days back I bought it for US ... (lucky me). This book is really great for Assembly Programmers, Hardware Interfacing (with PCI, Local bus, AGP, LPT and USB), etc. It is also great for leaning Interfacing with other devices too, since it clearly describes some interfacing ICs. It is not suited for beginners.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
It is a great book for anybody who learn intel microprocessor.. It gives detail about the architecture and the command review of intel microprocessor. But if you are fresh from oven to learn microprocessor, please make sure you have more than 1 book and try to understand this book by practice to the microprocessor on your computer. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A well-written must-have that won't disappoint!
This is an amazing book that is a must-have for anyone that is in the industry, interested in being in the industry, or just plain interested in the world of digital video. Editing Digital Video by Robert M. Goodman and Patrick McGrath is an exceptionally well-written book that covers techniques in craft and theory about editing that can benefit the novice home video editor to the professional feature film editor. The authors complete the daunting task of covering all of the many different digital editing interfaces by stripping them down to the essentials. They also cover the many different kinds of formats, such as narrative, documentary, commercials, music video, etc. I found the Keyboard Shortcut Cross Reference exceptionally handy. This book also covers recording DVDs, EDL formats, and details about exporting graphics. Being an editor initially learning editing techniques by physically cutting film and graduating to digital video editing, I very much appreciated this book that respected editing as a craft and art.
The fundamentals about storytelling and editing are definitely worth reading. Some of it might be a bit too Editing 101, but surprisingly, held some gems. The "Films to Watch" chapter with films that have been recommended for different genres of editing to lists of Eddie Award Nominees and Oscar Nominees is an added bonus.
Written in a very readable and likeable prose, Editing Digital Video is an absolute joy and a must for any editing enthusiast, whether in trade or in hobby.

5-0 out of 5 stars Invaluable
Let's face it, most people doing digital video are self-taught. Sure, there are some who've been to film school or have lots of experience with film but of all the DV camera owners, they're in the minority. The result: hours and hours and hours of weddings, school plays, birthday parties and... well... tripe. This book can help turn that tripe into gold because it covers the black art of editing.
Editing is one of those subjects that seems to be hard to teach through a book and, therefore, hard to learn. The solution employed by the authors is to include a CD containing three video clips for the reader to edit. The overall process is described in the text.
There's a wealth of other good information, some quite basic, some fairly advanced - a perusal of the table of contents will be informative to you.
Pros:
* Platform and edit system neutrality
* Video clips to edit
* Tour of all the important concepts
* Simple terminology

Cons:
* No finished professional edit of the project
* More detailed info on professional techniques would be nice

4-0 out of 5 stars A True Eye Opener
I've been in the marketing communications field for twenty years. During my tenure, I have worked in a variety of professional environments - from one of the world's largest marketing communications and advertising agency networks to operating my own small consultancy out of a home offfice. And, everything in between. Obviously, in larger organizations there are typically support personnel to develop and produce all video related efforts. In my past life all I needed to do was properly fill out a requisition form and wait for the results. Now that I'm operating independently, I'm always searching for the most appropriate educational resources to support my efforts in developing the best work I'm capable of. Upon discovering Editing Digital Video by McGrath and Goodman, I knew I found the perfect tool to enable me to more thoroughly understanding and orchestrate the many nuances associated with producing and editing professional videos. This book is a must-have for anyone needing to understand the road to better video editing and production.

3-0 out of 5 stars A Good Start to Editing
"Editing Digital Video" is a good overall review of editing. The book tries to touch on both the creative and the technical. It may be hard to teach the creative in these short pages, but it at least points you in the direction. Although it was in depth in teaching the basic of the basics of editing, such as "What is a shot?" it lacked when it came to describing more technical terms such as "What is 16:9?" It also gives an overview of all editing systems, nothing in depth on specific ones, such as Avid or Final Cut Pro, granted many have conformed to the same operations, it would have been nice to have subtle differences pointed out.
Overall, I think this book is a good book for beginner's and for advanced editor's that occasionally have brain freezes when working. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Really makes you think
This book explains the theoretical concepts of electricity and electronics very well. The quizzes really make you think, but they're open-book. The tests and the final exam are, as the author promises, easier, but they're closed-book. I've never seen a book that has so many well-written practice questions. I would like to see more material on advanced systems concepts and aerospace applications, but maybe that is asking too much for an introductory text (and it reflects my own bias!). I have recommended this book to several of my colleagues.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best I've tried so far for the true Beginner
This is the only book on electronics I've read that I didn't have to use another book as a reference for. The author starts off assuming the reader is new to electronics and doesn't forget that as he introduces new topics; most authors at some point start talking in techspeak without explanation or zoom ahead to get to their favorite topic; this one doesn't. He explains topics one at a time, without zooming from electrons to transdimensional quark theory. The book starts with electricity, what it is, what it does, how its behavior relates to electronics, and he introduces the various components, circuits, and ideas one at a time. It is not intended to be a circuit design or hobby book; but this is the one to read before progressing to those books, because they will not guide you through the concepts like this author does. By the end of it, you will confidently be able to go onto a more advanced book. My only quibble with the book is that he sometimes does not go into a subject in enough technical detail, but for that Basic Electronics course by Norman Crowhurst is a nice complement. You don't need it as a reference, but it goes more into technically advanced explanations on certain concepts/circuits. (But doesn't explain things as clearly for the beginner as Gibilisco does.) If you're looking for ONE book that covers it all perfectly, you won't find it. But this is the best beginning book I've found.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good conceptual introduction to the material, not much more
What this book does, it does well; namely, providing an introduction to the general concepts at work in electrical and electronic circuits. What it doesn't do, that many people are probably expecting from it, is to guide the reader to proficiency in anything approaching real-life circuit analysis and design, particularly once you're into Part 3 (Electronics). At that point the book reads more like a How Stuff Works article as opposed to an engineering book. That's not a terrible thing, but potential buyers should be aware of it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Starts off with a bang - ends with a wimper
I had to put my bits in to complement all the great reviews. Gibilisco indeed does a fantastic job introducing all of the basic concepts of electricity and electronics. The first two parts (550+ pages) are exemplary in their treatment of electronic components. I finally understood how to analyze an LRC circuit!!

The second two parts, however, are not nearly as helpful. Perhaps it's because the topics become too complex for the simple presentations use in the first half, but I found the sections on Basic and Advanced Electronics (the last 250+ pages) to be little more than a cursory overview of various components and uses. Good as a very basic introduction, but little practical value.

Overall, I enjoyed reading the book and learned a great deal from the first half. The second parts were interesting but less useful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ian C. Purdie, VK2TIP's Review
I think this is a particularly exciting text for professionals, hobbyists and technicians anxious to get a good grasp on the basis of electricity and electronics. "Teach Yourself Electricity and Electronics" comprises 700+ pages of well thought out tutorials. I would imagine it would be in great demand throughout schools, colleges and even universities.

Teach Yourself Electricity and Electronics is divided into four major sections: Direct Current, Alternating Current, Basic Electronics, and Advanced Electronics and Related Technology. Each chapter has comprehensive qizzes and each section finishes with a multiple-choice test. It is notable that you need nothing more than junior high school level geometry, algebra and physics to cope. There is also a "final" examination!

I think it represents excellent value for money to hobbyists, professionals and technicians. Comes very highly recommended from me, and with very good reason. ... Read more

Pssst, wanna make a weird photograph? How about a moody blue cyanotype or a Kallitype? Or maybe a ziatype, anthotype, or Ambrotype? Or perhaps you'd just like to know more about image transfer processes or how to make a pinhole camera. Imagine knowing a really cool guy who casually tells you lots of valuable stuff about the history and science of photography while you're working in his experimental darkroom, and you've got the essence of the unusual and delightful Book of Alternative Photographic Processes. Christopher James, a photographer and former Harvard University professor, leads you carefully through the chemistry and use of materials for each process. He offers numerous ways to make negatives and prepare the printing paper, and he coaches you in understanding and accepting the enormously variable effects of each method. Seven useful appendices deal with such topics as safety considerations and resources on the Web. Unlike the narrowly task-oriented approach of average how-to guide, this one points you to a much bigger world. Even the illustrations include a generous assortment of contemporary prints--among them James's own inventive images--as well as work by 19th- and early-20th-century photographers. They were the ones who pioneered most of the techniques that are now considered "alternative."

The fun of this book--even for someone unlikely ever to set foot in a darkroom--lies in the author's fascinating excursions into the wide world of knowledge, from the workings of 3-D to Charles Babbage's steam-driven punch-card systems. Equally compelling are the author's sense of humor and his utter lack of dogmatism. "In gum printing," he writes, "there are very few absolutely correct ways to do anything." --Cathy Curtis ... 5-0 out of 5 stars THE Book
Christopher James has written the most reader friendly, technically demystifying, and visually rich books that I have seen in a very long time. The "Little History" sections that begin nearly every chapter are fun to read and full of the connections, anecdotes, and colorful characters, that has made the photographic arts so compelling to historians and artists.

Technically, the book is clear and informative (winner of the Golden Light Technical Book of the Year in 2001) and goes to great lengths to be sure the reader will have little difficulty comprehending and working with the myriad processes covered.

Besides James's very accessible writing style, which reads like conversation between friends, the collection of illustrated work is truly outstanding. It is significant that of the over 300 illustrations, a good percentage were made by James's students and those of other artists, and teachers, represented in the book. It is important to note that the production values in this full color book are outstanding.

James has collected a rich contemporary survey of alternative process work, likely the most comprehensive in print, and this alone makes his book a terrific resource for students of any age. For teachers, it clearly "sets-the-bar" with a buffet of visual possibilities. I viewed an exhibition of the work in the book last fall, at The Art Institute of Boston, and can assure you that the quality of reproduction is first rate.

All in all, this is a wonderful book to read, work with in the studio, and to enjoy purely for the images. If you've ever had an interest in alternative process photography, this is The Book to have.

5-0 out of 5 stars even if you have a slight interest..
As far as I am concerned, this is THE BOOK.
It is so incredibly useful and I've learned so much from reading it. It's very well written, easy to follow, tons of references. Wow. I recommend this book to anyone interested in alternative process photography. Anyone interested in photography even. It is wonderful.
Basically, in photography, Silver is used a lot in the photographic papers. Alternative processing uses anything BUT silver. Platnium/palladium, gold, Iron.. even berries and various plants. This book gives a wonderful over-view of it all and tells you how to do it. There is even a bit of history about the different processes complete with wonderful pictures. I love this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars outstanding
this book is the most thorough alternative photographic process book on the market today.
the images from james, his students and other well-known photographers make it an
inspirational smorgasboard (sp?)......the writing is fun, funny and easily understood.....
highly recommended

1-0 out of 5 stars do not buy this book. It is not good

4-0 out of 5 stars Fills a void in teachers' references
This is one of the few books available that specifically addresses teaching at the high school level. It presents a very realistic picture of what students at this level are like and where they are coming from. The approach is very pragmatic, including things like setting up classroom rules, arranging your desk area, setting up a filing system, preparing for parent meetings, and managing your time. I found the many website recommendations to be especially useful.

I had to rate it less than five stars, however, because much of the material is rudimentary. For example, I think that even new teachers would find little in the lesson planning chapter that they didn't learn in school. This would be a better book if it stuck to the topics that aren't taught in traditional education programs. I recommend reading only the chapters that are of personal concern to you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource
This book is fantastic- a great reference book for a first year high school teacher!

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book I've read yet
As a recent grad with a job starting in August I find myself reading as many books as possible. Most tell me what I already know. This book is different. I've never seen a book cover so many topics so well. The beginning focuses on lesson planning, setting up your classroom, management, etc. Not only does it discuss these issues but the sidebars have different helpful themes. Some define teaching terms, others give the address of a useful webpage, while some are quick stories or tips from established teachers.

Not only does this book help with the basics and give plenty of resources, it goes deeper than any other book I've seen. This book covers touchy subjects that most don't dare talk about. It discusses relationships with peers (it even touches on going out drinking with them), problems with students (such as sex, drugs, abuse, rape, depression, etc) and more.

In short I would highly recommend this book to any new teacher.

3-0 out of 5 stars how-to vs. reference book
I think that the authors were trying too hard to make this a how-to book, when it should be regarded instead as a reference book.

What I mean is, the book spells out everything a new teacher has to think about, from discipline, to lesson plans, to staff relations, to supplies, etc. etc. etc. I don't think it really succeeds as a how-to book, though. If you want something like that, start with Harry Wong's "First Days of School" instead.

This book might be handy next to your dictionary and thesaurus as a reference guide, though. The numerous sidebars are what set apart this book from some others. "From the desk of..." provides nice anecdotes and stories. "Making the grade" points to numerous excellent online resources.

"Teaching terms" is a bit condescending (What first-year teacher doesn't know what curriculum means? If there are a lot, we are all in big trouble!) but on the whole, I think first-year teachers will be able to use snippets of this book. But unless you are a subsitute looking for a "crash course" approach to the profession, I think you will be a bit disappointed if you read this book cover to cover.

5-0 out of 5 stars About as helpful as they come...
After looking through book after book, trying to find that elusive Holy Grail of introductory teaching manuals, I found this. A real gem, giving advice on everything from seating charts to discipline to lesson planning. If you're a new teacher, especially if you haven't taken a lot of education courses, GET THIS BOOK. While it is an easy read, it is crammed full of information, and has calmed my first-year jitters a great deal. ... Read more

Book Description

Designed for use as a companion to any core DC/AC electronics book, this lab manual contains 35 experiments that build upon each other to guide users from basic concepts to more complex circuit analyses. Beyond simple data collection, each lab promotes critical thinking skills by requiring users to make their own predictions about the behavior of a circuit, test them, and draw conclusions by comparing their hypotheses to actual lab results. A series of questions at the end of each experiment leads users through the process of drawing logical conclusions about circuit behavior that are grounded firmly in their understanding of basic electronics principles. In addition, each experiment provides continuous reinforcement of DC/AC electronics concepts. Necessary components for all experiments are readily available in most electronics labs, and component values may be substituted if needed without altering the concept of the experiment. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Okay, but not great
I ordered this along with Harry Wong's First Days of School as something to give my student teacher. I was not impressed with this book. For $7, get Harry Wong's.
This book does contain some useful information, but it's an easy read, with really very little substance. Much of the information is common sense (like what supplies to keep at your desk, or how to make friends with the office staff). In most cases, this information is given out during student-teaching, college courses, or the district induction program. It contains very little in terms of setting expectations, dealing with crises, organization, etc.

If you do choose to get this book, I hope it would be one of many you'd read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Your First Year As an Elementary School Teacher : Making the
This is a fantastic book! I am a business professional looking to switching careers and go into elementary education, and this book was exactly what I needed to give me a heads up on what my first year as an elementary school teacher would be like. It's well-written, easy to read, and contains lots of tid bits of information that I never would have thought of! If you're considering elementary school teaching as a career, you have to read this book! I'm reading it now before I start my teaching licensure classes, and I'll read it again right before I start my first year of teaching. This book helped me to realize that I really do want to become a teacher.

3-0 out of 5 stars how-to vs. reference book
This is very similar to "Your First Year as a High School Teacher." I think that the authors were trying too hard to make this a how-to book, when it should be regarded instead as a reference book.

Sometimes it's nice to know that other teachers have also laughed and cried their way through their first years. "Making the grade" points to numerous excellent online resources. Let me stress how good their resources are - this is truly where you could the best use from this book. The "Teaching terms" are a bit condescending (What first-year teacher doesn't know what a 'school assembly' or a 'grade book' is? If there are a lot, we are all in big trouble!).

On the whole, I think first-year teachers will be able to use snippets of this book. But unless you are a subsitute looking for a "crash course" approach to the profession, I think you will be a bit disappointed if you read this book cover to cover.

5-0 out of 5 stars Your First Year as an Elementary Teacher
This book is truly a fine addition to the limited resources available to first year teachers. It not only gives excellent information on what to expect in your first year, but how to be successful in meeting these challenges. The practical solutions to the everyday issues of teaching are explained with humor as well as authority. The authors bring their experience as educators to the pages making this helpful book a sure winner that will greatly enhance the first year experience for teachers. I will use it and recommend it in my work as a student teacher supervisor. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Not the greatest book for me
I guess I don't understand construction details, but I didn't understand a single problem in this book. I had to refer to my Construction: Materials, Methods, and Techniques by William Spence in order to answer the review questions. The problems were writtin in short hand with abbreviations I didn't know. I think this book might be a little intimidating to someone who is not familiar with construction or detailing. ...
