3-0 out of 5 stars Okay for the first draft!
I think it has the makings of a good handbook. However, I think the author should have had it reviewed by his RF colleagues. Being no RF expert, I was able to pick out several obvious mistakes. A few gems: Pg. 64, "Velocity factor (v) of 0.80, which means that the wave propagates along the line at 8 - 10 the speed of light". Pg 284, Hot S22 Methods, Lists all the S parameter formulas but leaves out S22.

Several times in the book, Joseph Carr tries to point out the significance of the Third-order intercept point with variations of the same graph along with variations of the same description. I would rather have settled for one in depth explanation. By the way Joseph, just how do you come up with the straight-line equation for the 3rd Order Response?

There were some good examples on plots using the Smith Charts. However, the graphs were barely legible.

5-0 out of 5 stars finebuss handbook for serious amateur radio operators
This is my first Joseph Carr book and I am totally hooked.
Being a new ham and with no EE background, I find this book to be very clear and easy to understand, even for newbies like myself.

To fully grasp the ideas inside I would guess being a ham
helps. With basic college EE background this book sure is
a breeze to read. This is also a good handbook in case you forget RF fundamentals.

I am looking forward to buying more Josheph books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding!
This book is a truly outstanding reference for the RF laboratory. (It is so good, that I'm thinking about buying a second copy just in case I ever lose the first) Although this book says it is a "technician's handbook", I think engineers and technicians alike will find this book invaluable. If you are a young engineer, this book will answer all of the "stupid" questions you're afraid to ask your more senior colleagues. If you are a senior engineer, this book will help you remember how to perform that obscure receiver benchmark measurement. You really can't lose with this book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Too advanced for Newbie
I have a BS in electronics technology. I know alot about digital electronics, but RF frequency is something I know little about. This book is definitely not meant for a beginner to the RF world. I am totally lost.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent RF manual
As contributing editor and technical consultant to Mobile Radio Technology magazine I try to keep up with the latest books on radio and RF in general. I have never seen a Joe Carr book that was anything less than very good. This one is excellent. He knows the subject matter and writes in a practical, down-to-earth way that technicians can relate to. If you need to increase you knowledge of RF this book is for you. I highly recommend it! 3-0 out of 5 stars Not for beginners
I disagree with the editorial review's claim that no experience is required. While it is good at explaining the pros and cons of various types of welding equipment, it is mostly a craft project book. 5-0 out of 5 stars This book is choice!
I recently took my first DSP class and it was taught by none other than Joyce Van de Vegte herself using this text. DSP has some fairly difficult concepts, but this text explains them very well.

Joyce is an excellent instructor, and I find the book is written in the exact same way that she explains them in class. Concepts are explained only as technically as necessary. This makes the text much easier to read and understand the first time around and most technical texts fail in this area. ... Read more

Book Description

"A must read for anyone interested in understanding and developing assessments that can demonstrate the efficacy of their programs and services. A perfect sequel to Assessment in Student Affairs."
--Charles C. Schroeder, vice chancellor for student affairs, University of Missouri Columbia

"Upcraft and Schuh tell us when, where, how, and why we should conduct assessments differently within a wide variety of student service departments. Read and apply!"
--Gary R. Hanson, professor, Educational Leadership and Policy Studies, Arizona State University

When Assessment in Student Affairs first appeared in 1996, readers found a practical context for viewing the power of assessment across the domain of student services. Since then, John H. Schuh and M. Lee Upcraft have received numerous requests for more specific guidance to assessing and communicating the value of student affairs. This manual continues the work begun in their earlier book and provides a full range of tools for conducting effective assessments.

The authors begin with an overview of the assessment process and then detail a range of methodologies, approaches, and issues--explaining how to use them and when to recruit expertise from other campus sources. Drawing from the latest practice and a wealth of case studies, they discuss:

  • Qualitative assessment, including how to conduct focus groups
  • Quantitative assessment, including how to select and design instruments
  • Data collection and analysis, including mailed questionnaires, telephone surveys, and Web-based surveys
  • Assessing diverse needs, satisfaction, outcomes, environments, cost effectiveness, and accreditation
  • Specialized assessment studies, including how to review dropouts, graduates, academic success, and group educational programs
  • Select programs in student services, including first-year programs, recreation programs, financial aid, admissions, residence halls, college unions, health services, career services, counseling services, judicial affairs, and Greek life
  • Organizational and ethical approaches to assessment

5-0 out of 5 stars a beginners right choice
beginning electronic commnication was a nightmare for me,especially i feared cumbersome electronic circuits. But thanx to this outstanding book.authors outstanding vision forces the student to find all these concepts in nature.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good for technicians...as an engineer source: FATAL!
If you are not a Communications Engineer, this book will take you throught some (very basic) theory. The book is TOO expensive for what it has to offer (to engineers). I don't recommended to any engineer, not anyway for such a steep price! . If you are a Technician, ok, it will do, but don't even think about doing some simple designs and use this book as your refence!.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic textbook relating to communications- and more
As a college student involved in computers, this book is a resource. As a student interested in network software, hardware, and/or administration, it's a necessity. This book answers about 75% of the questions that I had regarding the first two units of MCSE. While I didn't need it to pass the tests, it was on the job knowledge that gets you noticed. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent text and "must have" for Driver Ed students!
As the preface says, "this book speaks to you, not at you". Driving is a challenge and this text simplifies the learning to a level that does not intimidate the beginner driver. Whether you're a teen or an adult needing "brush up tips", this book is an excellent investment. Each chapter has a separate "Objectives" page, a "Key Terms" page, self tests, chapter reviews-great for the classroom!

4-0 out of 5 stars The 8051 by Mazidi & Mazidi
The books only covers basics. They have not touched many of the areas such as RTC etc. Many of the topics are not covered in depth. They should also have touched the topic of programming 8051 with C and C++ or they can write a seperate book for this topic.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent book for starting your first project in 8051
It is a great book for beginners ,It has been very useful for my first project ,It explains how to start programming and designing the 8051 microcontroller ,and I advice every engineer student who wants to get a good start in using 8051 in one of his projects to take access of this book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not very useful for real project!
If you need to use 8051 in a work project, this is not the book for you. It's a not college level text, and the more advanced topics are either not covered or left as an exercise for readers. It's definitely not worth the price they charge.

2-0 out of 5 stars For Beginner only, some serious stuff is missing
I bought this book because of the five star rating, and I need a good 8051 book for my project. I spend about two days to go over this book, and are quite disappointed with the depth of the book. If you just want to know the very basic application of 8051, it's probably ok although there are quite a few typos.

There are three major flaws with this book:

1. Most of the serious topics are touched very lightly; it's almost useless for a firware/hardware engineer. For example, the memory map and the handshaking application of 8255.

2. Lots of trivial questions after each section, and each section is very short(again, nothing is really covered in details).

3. Very weak index, try to find memory-map!

I don't think the book deserves the price they ask for. I actually learned more from the 8051.com tutorial than from this book. The search for a good 8051 book is continued!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars The 8051 Microcontroller and Embedded Systems
This book is brand-new technical college level text that does a new slant on explaining the practical ways of designing and programming with this popular microcontroller. Even the latest and best Atmel devices are mentioned, except the bargain priced but maximum performance 20k FLASH ROM AT89C55 version, which the authors should add! The diagrams and actual code examples are very complete, and some tricks to use Windows tools and the supplied diskette I have not seen elsewhere.

My loaner copy came from a tech student as an sample book from his professor, I am buying my copy TODAY. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars OVER PRICED !!
We were very disappointed in this book. We really expected something more comprehensive. However, upon closer examination of the editorial review it is not touted as a text for Admins. It DOES reference "new users" and "students". But given that, this book is WAY OVER PRICED for the amount of information it contains. While the book does contain some good information, there were times when I found it less than accurate. For the amount you are paying for this text, that seems inexcusable. Personally, there are a lot better books for the target group(s) this is aimed at for a whole lot less money. However, I give it the three stars because a lot of information is treated well for beginners. In fact, we would give it more stars in that respect, but the price is ridiculous.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Terrific Book
This a very good book which simplifies the in and outs of Windows NT Administration and Security, in 247 pages (that is amazing). The illustrations are simple and easy to follow. As a student of the topic "Administration and Security" I find this text invaluable and well worth owining and reading. A great reference book for your personal library. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars success in a handbook
As a senior at NYU, the daunting task of writing a strong and well organized resume was dawning upon me.Thankfully, I fell across "The Resume Writer's Workbook" which is designed not only as a book with helpful tips to perka mediocre resume and constuct a professional and convincing resume that you will feel confident to send out, but also breaks down the process of creating a resume by giving you hands on experience through wroksheets. The workbook has been the most valuable lesson I have thus far learned and has made the transition of my education into the professional world easy and clear.I don't think I would have been able to not only create a strong resume describing my attributes and experiences, but also feel fully confidentthat is it the best projection of my skills and passions.Anyone planning on writing a resume should get this book.It will provide anyone with clear hands-on expereince of writing that piece of paper that can get you your dream job. I have read a few books on this subject and in my opinion this book steals the show. The workbook gave me the confidence I was lacking, and helped me nail the job I was after. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book!
Krantman's Resume Writer's Workbook is great! It makes me wish that I would have had the book when I was looking for my first job. It would have saved me the money I spent having someone else help me write my resume--and it would have been a better resume, too! I like the structure and step-by-step instructions. The worksheets are comprehensive and seem to ask just the right questions. The details on how to write cover letters and resumes (right down to the font size to use) tell me the kind of things I need to know. Not being particularly computer literate, I really like the way he explained using the internet to post my resume. My husband, a professor at a local college, even says that he's going to suggest it to his students. ... Read more

This book is brilliantly written and researched. It can be read at all levels of background. I highly recommend it for the colorist that wants to be knowledgeable. I picked it up and couldn't put it down.

1-0 out of 5 stars Boring !!
Not a very modern approach. Most of the ideas in this book would be appropriate for the 70's and 80's but not for today. The techniques used are all things any colorist should know coming out of beauty school.

5-0 out of 5 stars Detailed, Fascinating
Excellent presentation of info for the professional hairdresser. Good for any level of expertise. How to of hair color and the WHY behind it. I loved the details...(for example, they explain WHY and HOW chlorine turns hair brittle and green, not just a boring statement of the fact that it does and some ways to reverse that.)

Nice photos, well laid out, a little pricey but LOTS cheaper than a class.

5-0 out of 5 stars Haircoloring in Plain English
I always keep this book at my station to use as a reference when needed. Of the many haircoloring books I have read, this is the only one I would recommend for any and every hairstylist, no matter what their level of experience. It addresses every point of haircoloring theory in a clear, concise manner, and does not refer to any specific line of color, making this book practical for every stylist, no matter what color line they use.
