Long-time professor and student adviser Bill Coplin surveyed the nation’s top companies and identified the essential skills recent grads need to survive and succeed in the job market. 5-0 out of 5 stars Apractical guide to being practical with your education
The book is a tremendous aid to help a college student, or for that matter any young man our woman get a leg up as they prepare for the real world they face outside of formal education. It addresses things that our formal education system misses. If you plan on working in a career, like most people, then you need this book to help you be prepared to face reallity of the work world. It suggests an investment of thought, time and energy but the payoffs will be worth it. Ask the HR people in your company if it is on target. My children will be reading it as they prepare to move into the "real world". Yours should too!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good and bad
The description of this title does not exactly make clear what the book is about.

Part I - Know How Groups
Details specific skills in 10 groups by saying 1) why they're important 2) how college-level coursework can help you develop them, and 3) how activities, jobs, and internships can help you develop them.

Part II - What you should be doing in college to help yourself get a job/internship
Explains the idea of an apprenticeship, how to make college choices, volunteering, thinking BEYOND college, and more

Part III - Planning your success
More on careers, improving your "know how" skills, and how to use show off your know how skills in your resume and cover letter

Part I I found useful for some skills and a lot of fluff for others.
The explanation of the skill itself is mostly useless and consists principally of 1) a discussion of a rather irrelevant quote put at the top of each section, 2) how you might use it in a business/management type position. Of course that helps you out if you enjoy irrelevant quotations and are heading for a career in management, but be warned - this book was written for liberal arts majors. That is the type of student this author has had the most experience with and portrays most skills that are necessary for a position in sales, management, or some other business-oriented capacity. It's not for engineering majors.

Parts II and III I found very useful and eye-opening was the discussion of internships, jobs, and other activities outside of campus that comes after Coplin's foray into "know how groups." It details how you can use your connections and campus/online resources to find a career-starting experience at a relevant company. It also sheds some light on the internship experience and why it's important to "pay your dues."

If 1) you're majoring in some liberal arts field, or 2) want to learn more about what you SHOULD be doing with your time in college, this book is for you. But don't pick it up if you want to go to med, law, or some other graduate school. There are simply better titles for guiding you to those areas. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars An Editorial Disaster - Stay Away!
I was suckered into buying this worthless book for a survey class I took on Post-Production for Film and Television. What I hoped would be an enabler to my education turned out to be a hurdle: the book is poorly organized, the concepts aren't clearly explained, and the entire text is fraught with spelling errors and grammatical mistakes. When the authors aren't clogging the text with jargon, they're giving you advice on how to do business in this industry. If you work in the industry, as I do now, this book won't tell you anything you don't know already. If you want to learn about the process, this book won't enlighten you. Do yourself a favor and stay away from this editorial disaster!

5-0 out of 5 stars Post-Production Bible!!!!
Susan Spohr and Barbara Clarke have created nothing short of a post-production bible. BRAVISSIMO to them both!! I would not have survived the last year in my job without their brilliant book!!! Everything flows in a clear, concise way, bringing the reader visually into the post-production process. Read this book and keep it with you as a reference tool! I guarantee you it is well worth your time!

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Handbook
The Guide to Postproduction for TV and Film: Managing the Process is an excellent resource for anyone working in the entertainment industry. I haven't been able to find another book that so effectively takes you through the nuts and bolts of post production, from scheduling all the way through to delivery. If you are an entertainment executive, a film student, or anywhere in between this book will be an invaluable resource. I've been working in the film and television industry for twelve years and this book has helped me in jobs at two major television networks and in feature post production at several studios. The new edition provides accurate and up to date information and is the only book I've been able to find that adequately covers the film laboratory. The Guide is the one book I always have at my desk. I strongly recommend it.

2-0 out of 5 stars TV-centric
Don't let the title fool you. This book is mainly about making TV shows in L.A. The aspects of film postproduction are merely added-on as an afterthought and go into no great detail. Those wanting to get serious about film postproduction and learn the "nuts and bolts" of it should definitely look elsewhere.

"Managing The Process" takes a systematic "how to" approach to postproduction. It takes you by the hand and tells you what to do but doesn't explain why things are done a certain way. This makes it a good guide to finishing network shows, but not much else. People working outside television and the Hollywood system are left to figure it out for themselves.

If you're in production and want an overview of how postproduction is done, I guess you could find this book useful. I wouldn't recommend it as a reference to anyone who is serious about getting into postproduction. Depending on your field, there are books that go into much greater detail on either picture and sound editing, tape and film post, or running an editing room.

If you want to learn about making films and need a true reference book that will be useful for years to come, then get Dominic Case's "Film Technology in Post Production". On the other hand, if you aspire to get into the mind-numbing world of network series and made-for-TV movies, then "Managing the Process" is the book for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars A comprehensive production/post production management tool
A good book for those who want to know how to manage the process of production and post production. Contains tables, flow charts and practical lists. Be aware, reader, that this book does NOT contain editing theory and/or aesthetics. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars What's the difference between this book and ISBN# 0130163945
Hi,

What's the difference between this book and ISBN# 0130163945 ?
They appear to be the same.

5-0 out of 5 stars I think its a Great Book
I had engineering years ago, but no electronics. I bought the 4th edition of this book and used it for self-study. I think its a very good book. I thought the examples were good and I worked a lot of the problems. I dont't recall many mistakes in the text or the answers. I also thought the section on the oscilloscope was good. I did have to read some of the material over several times to understand it. Chapter 19 Amplifiers and Oscillators was the hardest material to me. There was some material in that chapter that I never could figure out. I learned a lot from this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excelent fundamental intro
This book is an excelent introduction to electric circuits and some electronics. It presents everything in a very simple and comprehensive way. So if you are initiating in this fiel this book is for you. If you have readed the review below, let me say that there is no problem with these book, because the reality is that electrons move from negative to positive terminals. And because electrons make current you can think of current moving to positive side, or you can think reversely (like the convention) this doesn't matter, this doesn't change the analysis.

1-0 out of 5 stars Beware the current flow. . . .
This book uses the actual flow of electrons to depict current (minus to positive), as opposed to the conventional view that current flows from a positive terminal to the negative terminal. This proved to be the books undoing.

I could not find justification for this current model in the description, the table of contents, or the forward of the book. I was extremely disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Want to learn ELECTRONICS..........Read this book!!!!!
I am an electronics student and this book is the best. Go ahead, buy this book, or better yet, enroll in RETS electronic school. This is the book they use. That alone should let you know how great this book really is. RETS is the best!!!!!!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for med trans students (coming from one!)
I am so glad that I bought this book! It is very helpful and insightful. I am currently in a two-year Associate of Science in Medical Transcription degree program, and while I am very happy with my training at the college, I felt clueless as to: how to start looking for a job, what I should look for in a position, what to expect in salary for my first job, how to do my resume with no on-the-job medical transcription experience, etc. This book covers it all! It has good information on all of the above mentioned topics AND stories from working medical transcriptionists and how they got their first jobs. It also has websites relevant to medical transcription and many more tips including a chapter on "tricks of the trade." This is an excellent book if you need ideas on how to start after you graduate. I highly recommend it for any medical transcription student! ... Read more

Users of this comprehensive guide will find up-to-date information for safely and efficiently locating problems and then troubleshooting online. Multimeters, clamp-on meters, ammeters, megohmmeters, proximity voltage meters, hand-held oscilloscopes and other meters are thoroughly discussed as plant electrical troubleshooting tools. 1-0 out of 5 stars Needs proofread, BADLY!
I'm presently using this as a textbook in an into-level EE class. The book is a great concept - give a book of problems and enough information on the theory to solve them, including some step-by-step examples. And, sometimes, it works well. What kills it are the repeated glaring errors in the answers it gives for the questions - so far, I'd venture to say that, after the first couple chapters, more then 10% of the answers are wrong, be it from swapping a sign someplace or an outright mistake in understanding on the part of the person who solved the problem. This makes the book uterly and totally unacceptable - it has as much potential to damage someone's knowledge of electronics as to teach the person. ... Read more

I have jut finished read his book and let me tell you that it was great! If you are in a jam and are wondering a question. It will have it. If you not sure what book to get. Between this and "build your own combat robot." Well, I am currently reading "build your own combat robot." I'd personally get both but 1st I would definitely get Combat Robots Complete because I have noticed that in "build you own combat robot" they on touch on some stuff and not go in-depth they sometimes have actually said look online or at a library. I mean come on we all could have thought of that one! In combat robots complete they go in-depth a little more and I am an amateur and that really helps because I think a lot of the amateurs really need that kind of help. Now to wrap it up. Get it As SOON AS POSSIBLE! Then read all of it. Do not just read it, read it. Read it and understand it! You may need to reread some chapters. then once you got a good handle on it definitely buy "build your own combat robot," they have different view, chapters and explanations. So get them both! ...
