THE BEST WIRELESS BOOK IN MY LIBRARY
I was looking for a wireless book that explained RF in a simple and concise manner. The RF Handbook fits that bill perfectly: no complicated formulas, just easy-to-understand text, diagrams and schematics for beginners to experts. It is a perfect reference book for all wireless people as well. I wish all technical books were like this. I hope the author writes another book on similar technical subjects soon... A good book to learn wireless and troubleshooting techniques
This book answered a lot of detailed questions I had about troubleshooting electronics. Not only that, but now I know exactly how a lot of the radio equipment we use every day works.

I feel more confident in becoming a wireless technician after I graduate. I read the first edition also. I liked both books very much.

A must-read for anyone interested in wireless & electronics!
This is my third copy of the RF Handbook. My technician friends in electronics all ask to borrow it -- and never want to return it!

This book has all of the usual defects of books from Kluwer Academic Publishers.Acronyms in the text and terms in equations are not defined.Diagrams have errors.It seems to be a cut and paste job with very little systematic development of the subject.Graphs of CAD program outputs are presented with no or very little comment or discussion.There is one case of a technical error.A mathematical program output which claims to show the effects of amplifier noise figure really illustrates the beneficial effects of dithering data to overcome the effects of finite word length in FFT calculations. ... not worth the money -- beware
As an experienced circuit designer and a lego mindstorms enthusiast, I found this book very disappointing. I had suspicions about why many copies of it were being auctioned on ebay for $2 each. Now I know why. Right from the first chapter on, I am puzzled about what the hell the author is attempting to communicate. I fail to understand why he uses an obsolete Scout programmable brick (from the Robotics Discovery Kit), or for that matter, why he even interfaces a gutted RC transceiver to it. He doesn't even use it to remotely control the robot. No, he uses the Scout interfaced with a relay driver circuit to turn a wireless receiver on and off remotely as a lame example of wireless control. This is an example of wireless control? Yeah, a bad one if anything.

I'm also not sure of the audience he intends this book for. He put lots of circuit schematics and descriptions in it, but assumes the reader has basic elctronics knowledge, such as diode and transistor theory, as well as circuit analysis skills. If this book was intended for high-school age readers, they better be taking electronics or have had courses in it, or he will lose them with this content. My personal opinion is that this text has some potential as a reference in the 2nd year of a community college electronics program, but no serious circuit designer, programmer, or even hobbyist is gonna get anything new from this. Better info about sensor development and other programming languages is easily found on other lego mindstorms websites.

Another annoying aspect is the author's liberal use of acronyms for just about any set of words he deems necessary, whether it fits or not. There are more TLAs throughout this text than any military field manual ever contained. I don't need him to condense something so useless as 'stand-alone code' to SAC for future use.

The author does include a new and interesting method of object-oriented RCX prgramming with Python and VBA language using Excel. This is probably about the only redeeming aspect of this text for savy programmers, but it too is more of a 'type this' and 'run this' treatment that omits any useful explaination of the code and how it works. I believe the intended audience for this book may just find this way over their head if they are only capable of programming the RCX using RCX code, instead of using other more flexible and challenging languages such as NQC and Java.

Bottom line: if you are even mildly curious about this book, get it at an auction or buy it used thru Amazon (as I did--I only paid $2.50 + $3.50 s/h). Don't even think about paying full retail price for this text; it isn't worth it, and you'll be disgusted that you wasted your money on it. Better and more information on RCX interfacing can be found on the web at other lego mindstorm sites such as http://www.plazaearth.com/usr/gasperi/lego.htm

Great book from a different approach
I have in my collection all of the books published on Lego Mindstorms. While everyone else focus on construction of a Lego model with an accompanying program to add functionality to the model, Wilcher takes a different approach.

This book is not for the absolute beginners. You do need to have some prerequisites in electronics and programming. The book only shows you how to carry out the interfacing between the RCX and the outside world (using eg. RC transmitter/receivers, Basic Stamp) but assume you know about potentiometers, resistors etc and also know how to use multimeters. This book is more for the electronically adept users who wishes to use RCX as part of his tools.

Overall, this is book that I would highly recommend to all who wish to use the RCX other than what all the books have on about. I gave it 4 stars (actually I would have preferred 4.5 stars, but Amazon doesn't have that!) as I would really would see Wilcher going in-depth for some of the projects.

Helpful and informative
I found the book easy for me to understand. Although I am relatively new to Mindstorms, I needed to be able to move beyond the basics. The programs provided on the cd gave me some more ideas of where I can go as I develop myself. It's light-hearted and full of illustrations that gave me a thorough understanding of the concepts that he discussed. This book is an asset to any collection.

This book is, hands down, the best book on trunking radio information that I have found. It covers much more than just trunking systems and would serve as an excellent reference to land mobile radio communications techs/engineers and consultants. It's the best I have seen on radio in general and trunking in particular. An unexpected bonus was the free software that is available as a download from the internet. Very clearly written survey of the art of audio amplifier design over the last 50 years. Covers early tube amps, including classic McIntosh, Quad, Williamson, Ultralinear examples as well as OTL designs. Superb review of evolution of transistor amps from early efforts evolved from tube designs, 60s quasi-complementary designs, 70s differential amps with full complementary output, 80s MOSFET applications. Many examples dissected, and plenty of theory but not a cookbook for making amps. Does overlap some of his earlier books, so if you have them you may not find a lot of new content. Stamp this one off your wish list
A very catchy cover that promises to deliver some really interesting projects. Unfortunately, it is a dismal disappointment. I'm surprised that the "editor" even showed her name.
The text is badly written, with a lot of sentences repeated. I found this feature quite annoying. The author's writing style is tedious, but if you can't fall asleep at night, try getting through a chapter of this and you'll be snoozing in no time!
I guess you can use this book to "Stamp out insomnia"!

Written by an engineer from central New York, its no wonder the style is awful and the code doesn't work! Engineers in CNY are always rushed to get product out the door, whatever the cost to quality, and the fact that this book is rife with errors and typos only shows the lack of technical skills of the "editor".

Errors
I had high hopes for the book... but...

There are some nice projects in the book, but as I attempt to load the programs into my stamp2 I note that many have errors. Most of them are minor. They used the wrong symbol for comments. Easy to fix, just change and the stamp program points them out to you. But...

There were a couple of projects that I REALLY wanted to do, like the balloon telemetry device. Turns out the code is NOT for a stamp2.. it is for a stamp 1. As I understand it, the code is completely different. Another program wouldn't load either.. I haven't figured out why yet.. but I suspect it is the same problem.

Why do so many books or magazine articles have errors. Why risk spending the money on all the parts when it may well not work due to errors. Could authors please triple check!?

The book may still be worth it in that there are some fun prjects that DO seem to have good code. But.. are the parts diagrams right? ... Read more

Much better than the reviews say!
I expected the photos to be hard to discern, as it was stated by other reviewers. As a Master Electrician, I found that this is not the case. Apparently, the photos are not for amateurs, since it requires someone who has actually seen such wiring "in the flesh" to really understand them.

No other book deals with old wiring so well. The subject is too often neglected by the industry.

The author wisely recommends consulting an experienced electrician. Unfortunately, too many young ones do not understand old wiring and many old ones are up to date with the current electric code.

Excellent book
My thoughts reflect the previous reviews pretty much. This book has been excellent at helping me deal with my home's 1950's era wiring. The major drawback to the book is the photographs. There are many photographs that I imagine would be very helpful, except that they are in black and white and it is extremely difficult to tell what exactly the pictures contain. Other than that, excellent book.

An excellent book for remodelers
This book is a great resource for the non-professional who has to evaluate and/or repair old residential electrical systems. It is well-organized, thoroughly safety-oriented, and practical. The author, David E. Shapiro, is a master electrician with substantial experience. He not only translates the National Electrical Code into practical advice for the do-it-yourselfer, he isn't afraid to express his opinions and recommendations, which is rare in this kind of book. This kind of practical advice, based on long experience, is more valuable than the just-the-facts approach taken by so many DIY authors.

There are two problems with the book, however, and both are related to the graphics. Many of the photographs are blurry or otherwise unhelpful, and there are a number of places in the text where more phtotographs or illustrations would be quite helpful. I would have given this book five stars if the graphics were done as professionally as the text.

Finally, the book doesn't really deal with the "knob-and-tube" type wiring found in many older homes. The author is clear that many subjects are beyond the scope of this entry-level book, and knob-and-tube is one of the subjects that doesn't make it in.

Excellent users' manual
This book covers all the issues that arise in using Orcad Lite Version 9.2 in an undergraduate setting. Screen dumps show exactly how to implement the most used features. New features are described that prove very useful. Supplementary material on the author's Web site includes file exchange by e-mail, incorporation of Probe plots into Word, and the use of hierarchical blocks that can be drilled down to the underlying schematics. .

Some features, like the design cache, are not described in detail. These are new, more specialized bells and whistles of the Cadence version.

The author takes the conventional approach of showing what can be done without explaining the quirks of the new system and its drawbacks. I believe readers might very well appreciate a comparison of pros and cons of Version 8.0 or earlier vs. this new version that, along with its advantages, uses an inferior drawing package for schematics, consumes huge amounts of memory, crashes frequently, sometimes confuses projects open at the same time, and often can't locate components of projects (like the Schematic!) clearly present in the same folder as parts it does find.

A rare treat
