This is a must read for any "girl" - teenager to senior citizen.Dr. Frankel offers straight forward strategies and advice on how to play the game of getting rich. The book is like a great buffet where you can pick and chose any chapter and feel well nourished.She gives you coaching tips that assure your financial and personal growth. The book is rich in priceless words of wisdom!

The title really could be amended to, "Seventy-five mistakes that can benefit just about anyone."

Nearly everyone has made at least one of these mistakes (okay, maybe Donald Trump never did).But I think Frankel offers more than a collection of mistakes and "if onlys." She's got some good ideas you won't find everywhere.

My favorites:

Brainstorm with big picture thinkers -- and then get advice from the nitpickers.

Get out of your safety zone (no guts, no glory).

Listen to your intuition.

Just these three could save you the price of the book -- and there are many, many more.

This book has been all that I hoped for and more. The book, in a nutshell, basically says that to get ahead in life, in career, in everything, women need to stop acting like little girls.

Replete with examples from Ms. Frankel's consulting clients, this book gives practical, no-holds-barred evaluations of such behaviours as feeding people at the office, working too hard, asking questions instead of making statements, and "asking permission." That last was a revelation to me.

As Ms. Frankel points out, we are all raised in a society that says you should get proper approvals before taking a step---any step. But men learn when to ask and when to just go ahead. Men learn how to apply the rubric "It's easier to get forgiveness than to get permission." Ms. Frankel pointes out that children, not adults, ask for permission to do perfectly rational things. I had never considered how detrimental to my career the habit of asking permission had been. But I decided to give Ms. Frankel's suggestions a try. I went to my boss and said, "I cannot come in on Friday." My boss looked nonplussed. I was petrified, but proud. I had done it. I had Made A Statement instead of Seeking Approval. And he didn't demur. He said, "Okay," and we went on with the day.

If you are feeling frustrated by the glass ceiling, if you feel stuck and can't figure out why you can't get further in your career ambitions (and if you're a female), this book is definitely worth the investment. It opened my eyes to things I did that I never even thought about, things that presented an image of an incompetent child---not a competent, composed, and capable woman. My image is now improving, and yours can too.

Men are men. Women are women. Right? The matter of gender is easy enough to establish, but in Lois P. Frankel's book, "Nice Girls Don't Get the Corner Office: 101 Unconscious Mistakes Women Make That Sabotage Their Careers" we learn there are underlying mores and premises to follow if women want to be at the top of a company. These rules are unspoken, but Frankel demystifies the process by which some women hurt their success by playing into the cultural roles prescribed to them growing up.

Frankel presumes most women grew up in a home that oppresses women from growing up into full adults. What may have been true for 1954 is not as true today. However, her challenge is still with merit, and in 2004, it crosses the gender barrier. e men should be taking notes from Frankel. There are plenty of little boys among us who need to work as men.

"Rosie the Riveter" ads during WWII encouraged women into the workplace, but often as factory and shipyard works. There was no "Annie the Accountant" or "Sally the CEO" campaigns. Being all you can be means being more than you were as a child. Frankel helps show how women can be more than little girls in the office place, and garner success as a result.

It is important to note that as much as this is an important book for women who esteem to be seen as professional should read, men also should read it. Not every man has reached his potential, and some fall to the same problems, in a masculine variation, as do some women. Fear, exhibited through the lack of initiative and an overborne, unnecessary kindness, holds many people back.

Objective, straightforwardness is much of what Frankel asserts.

Being professional doesn't mean you need to convert into a stomping intimidator, but it does mean being firm, not wincing when rejection is forthcoming, and thinking about more than immediate relationships. It is about getting the job done well, in concert with others, but never becoming weak while doing it all. You have expertise. You have training. You have what it takes.

Although Frankel is a professional coach, her book itself shows a coach is not needed. You need to be in control of your career, without worrying about the next person. Retain your ethics, your integrity and your aplomb, but it is your job to lead the way through your professional life. No parents, no coach, no friends are responsible for this.

by Lois P. Frankel. Follow it up with the classic Dale Carnegie book, "How To Win Friends And Influence People," to learn the other side of the professional relationship balance.

This book does a fine job of exploring gender issues not just in the corporate world but also in other relevent aspects of life. It was a good read. I got a good kick out of this book and also suggest reading the book "Stumbling Naked in the Dark" to understand how men can benefit and learn from us women.

No excuses. I read this book and it has a few obvious choices for altering behaviors male or female, but I despise books like this because the premise is failure before you even begin! This book is only for you if you're think you're "behind" somehow. You're not and if you think you're not others will see that confidence. Do you think women who succeed in business begin with the premise they're NOT going to get a corner office? Are women "flawed" to begin with? No. I wholeheartedly disagree with this author. Embrace what makes people different.

If you're not doing well in business of course you re-evaluate how you're handling your career and professional demeanor. If your career is all important to you then by all means do whatever you have to do to reach your goals, male or female.

Here's the real white elephant in the room. Women have babies. Moms will always be torn during their reproductive years between advancement in business and raising a family and those same years are typically the most productive years for a career. You can still be yourself and have it all, just not all at the same time. Make time for children and husbands and friends. They're worth the time too. If you let your business relationiships be just business relationshihps the level of respect you have for yourself will advance you further than just no longer "apologizing too much" or no longer being "naive" whatever that means.

I bought this book for my wife over two weeks ago at our local Borders. Having been a fan of Stanley & Danko's first great work, The Millionaire Next Door I was anxious to see this new version for the female gender.

I was not dissappointed. Millionaire Women Next Door profiles the most successful women. It shows the businesses they got into and how they achieved their great wealth.

While I know Mothers day is over, guys, I highly recommend this book for your wives or significant other in your life. Let thme see how great wealth is achieved by the gentler gender.

If you're a woman who didn't quite see yourself in The Millionaire Next Door, there's hope. Women are different than male millionaires in several important ways. For example, the typical male millionaire has married once and remains married, but over half of female millionaires have been divorced. Women are also more generous than men.

The book mainly talks about business owners becoming wealthy, but it also talks about alternatives to business ownership. Stanley profiles a star saleswoman, educators (a wealthier group than you realize), and stay-at-home women who act as managers of their "family office". He also discusses parenting your children so they can develop a millionaire mindset. Many situations are presented in this book, so you can probably find something that will apply to you.

As for helpful advice, the author points out cautions women need to consider. Women need to watch out for the "Marginal Bob" worthless first husbands. Women also often provide continued financial support to their grown children and grandchildren. This "economic outpatient care" hurts both parents and children.

I enjoyed reading this book. It was well written and thoroughly researched. I will buy more copies for graduation gifts.

When I read reviews like the one that precedes mine and says that this bookis just a rehash of Dr. Stanleys earlier work, I have to wonder why people post reviews who obviously never read the book.

But upon checking reviews on The Millionaire Mind, I couldn't help but notice the same nonsense that The Millionaire Mind was supposedly the same as The Millionaire Next Door. And then upon reading some reviews on The Millionaire Next Door, people were comparing that book to books written by other authors.

I guess the millions of copies that were sold were purchased by people who must be extremely ignorant and naive right? WRONG! DEAD WRONG!

Each one of Sr. Stanleys book's are different. The fact that this book is titled Millionaire Women Next Door should be a hint that this book is different. As a female, I am glad that Dr. Stanley decided to profile the many millionaire women out there. In fact, it's past due time for the female sect to get ample recocgnition for our accomplishments.

And let's not forget that it was and still is more difficult for females to move ahead in corporate America than their male counterparts, even if the females do have better skills. Fortunately, that trend is slowly changing.

Men and women are different. Comparing this book to The Millionaire Next Door which profiled the men is like a doctor giving medication for male sexual disorders to a female.

I am glad that Dr. Stanley wrote this book and grateful that he has given the female sect the recocnition and praise they deserve. To me, this book is an inspiration to achieve in a world dominated primarily by the male sect. Dr. Stanleys great work gives hope and purpose for females who feel overshadowed by the men. It also shows that female gender can kick butt in the business and financial world and in many cases, far outperform men.

Millionaire Women shows the mental makeup as well as other factors that enabled females to achieve great financial success. Dr. Stanley, I applaud you for this work. 1 star reviewer, try reading the book before writing a review and get a life!

If you enjoyed , The Millionaire Next Door, skip this book ! This new book, " Millionaire Women" is a rehashed version of the first book. It is written to answer the question, " How are female millionaires different from male millionaires ? ". It gives tidbits about how much more men spend on shoes then women, etc. It would be an interesting magazine article but there is not enough new information to warrant a new book. I was left wondering if the author signed a multi book contract after the success of "The Millionaire Next Door".
The worst chapter has to be the one on part time workers. The two people profiled ( one male, one female ) both own rental real estate. Dr. Stanley gushes that they "... make money even while they sleep !". This chapter reads like a script from a late night info-mercial ! It doesn't cover any of the practicalites of purchasing a rental, finding tenants, legal problems, maintenace issues or what to do if the tenants don't pay the rent. If you believe the description of being a landlord in this book, you will believe that you work less then 20 hours a week and due nothing more then deposit checks.
Another disappointment was the chapter on Stay at Home Moms. The author calls these, Family Office Managers. They are frugal with their spending and invest on a regular basis to accure wealth over time. The chapter was disappointing because it was only 8 pages long and includes a long letter from a woman who created family wealth this way but must give all of the credit to her husband.
If you have never read anything by Dr. Stanley on this topic, It is well worth your time to read one of his books. In our "Spend, Spend, Spend" culture, it is important to know that everyday people create wealth thru a frugal lifestyle and investing. They invest in stocks, bonds, real estate or their own business. They do not get rich over night. They do not have flashy cars, clothing, homes etc. They live a middle class lifestyle and keep their wealth to themselves. They donate to worthy causes, help their families and have financial security in their retirement years.
It is interesting to note that many of the folks he interviewed for this book had read " The Millionaire Next Door". They admitted to checking it out from the library and not buying it. They are too frugal for that !

This is vintage Dr. Stanley. Thoroughly researched and accurate. I suspect that the 1 star reviews and unhelpful votes are from men who are jealous of the opposite, but very wealthy and successful gender.

Then I picked it up and read it. An amazing book. I was able to use the advise immediately and found that it helped me get what I want at work and at home with my husband and children. I don't expect to need the chapters on cars, houses or divorces but the other chapters are directly applicable to things I have to deal with every day.

After reading this book, I learned that everything really is negotiable, all you have to do is ask. It taught me how to approach negotiating in my daily life. Now, I can get what I want and it is fun! I didn't realize how often I was negotiating, but now I can control the deals I make. It is easy to read and very empowering. I highly recommend reading it.

This review is a collaborative writing project completed by a ENGL/227 class at DeVry University in beautiful Colorado Springs, Colorado.

This book teaches you how to be a team player as well as a leader. Playing hardball doesn't mean being ruthless or heartless. Highlights include using nonverbal cues to your advantage, using "power talk" to come across as confident, and making the most out of criticism. The only thing we would change is the book's cover design.It is very outdated. All in all we would recommend this book to all professionals, men and women. :)

Working in a male-dominated company in a male-dominated field (sales) I had noticed some of the behaviors mentioned in this book. However, "Hardball" gave me insight into WHY I saw these behaviors and how to deal with them. The book is getting a little dated (the power suit/skirt is out, the power suit with slacks is the choice of women executives these days) but still very good information. You must keep in mind that not ALL men think this way - as with all generalizations you have to keep flexible and adapt to the situation. A must read for any woman who is mystified by the behaviors she sees around her and wants to move up in the corporate world.

As a woman who's worked in a "man's field" for 20+ years, I really thought I knew how to play hardball. Boy was I wrong. This book by Pat Heim and Susan Golant really showed me where I was making sometimes fatal errors and how to fix them fast. The result has been more respect at work from my male peers and enough confidence to ask for -- and receive -- a substantial raise. This is a must-have book. I just wish that I had found it many years ago.

I am not a big fan of self-help books, but bought this at a friends recommendation and found it very helpful despite my lack of enthusiasm typically for "pop psychology/sociology". I have often found myself confused as to why I was doing what I thought I was supposed to do in order to be successful: working hard, being what I thought was a good "team player" and serving my organization, and yet I kept finding myself being attacked, hurt, and even demoted.This book explains the "rules" and gives insight into how to play the game that exists in todays American workplace.I'll know that women have really made headway in the workplace when there are self help books out there teaching men how to "play the game" in a woman's cultural world too, but till then, women in the workplace need books like this. ... Martin M. Broadwell and Carol Broadwell Dietrich expertly guide you through learning how to be the boss. They cover adjusting to your new role, acquiring the skills you'll need and coping with becoming a supervisor - from planning and organizing to directing and controlling. There may be just too much about stress and not quite enough about daily processes and follow through, but the information is solid across all subjects. The authors get right to the point, never sacrificing warmth, context or detail. Each section ends with thought-provoking group or individual exercises to reinforce what you've just read. We recommend this book to people who are taking their first supervisory positions, to those aiming for that goal and to anyone who has to train either of them.

Dr. Phyllis Mindell begins her work with an opening that outlines the benefits you will gain as a reader, and advice for making the most of the book. Among Dr. Mindell's long list of promises are some very audacious ones, such as "influence policy decisions at the top" "improve your career" and "lead and manage successfully". Upon reading this intro, I was intrigued but highly skeptical. After all, Phyllis didn't know my particular situation, the politics in my company, or the people with whom I am dealing. How then, I wondered, could she guarantee me such dramatic results? After reading the book and seeing immediate improvement in my professional life, I understand that that is the point indeed--the issues faced by women in all professions and at all levels have common roots! Dr. Mindell has discovered the true cause of women's relative lack of success in the workplace when compared to men: a failure to appreciate and utilize the power of language. Unfortunately, we are often guilty of self-sabotage in which we undermine our own effectiveness with weak language or an attempt to imitate the "strong" language of men.Fortunately, Dr. Mindell has developed a language style for women and she teaches it in a practical, actionable way with lots of examples and tools to show the reader "how to transform your life by transforming your language". She also discusses style and dressing for success, as well as power reading, both important issues related to that of language. I also received many compliments for my apparent "off the cuff" speech the next day at the Energy conference. Little did they know that I had the help of an "expert"! I loved the whole book and read it in a couple of sittings although it is not a "light read" by any means. I am now recommending "How to Say it For Women" to all my women colleagues and friends. The book is a good investment and a steal at that price.

Men ask for what they want twice as often as women do and initiate negotiation four times more, report economist Linda Babcock and writer Sara Laschever in the footnoted but engaging Women Don't Ask. With vivid research examples drawn from cradle, classroom and playground, the authors detail culture as the culprit in discouraging women from negotiating on their own behalf.

Men, socialized in a "scrappier paradigm," learn to pursue and energize their goals at work and home. The two key elements are control and recognizing opportunity. For example, girls, rewarded for hard work, learn to see control as outside of themselves while boys are urged to take charge. Boys are schooled to recognize opportunity and girls to choose safe targets.

The debate on gender equity often emphasizes that women earn less than men with similar experience. Authors Linda Babcock and Sara Laschever say that while women may indeed be the victims of external forces, they also to some extent may suffer from their own inability, unwillingness or aversion to negotiate or make demands. In fact, men negotiate four times as frequently as women, and get better results. Men are much more apt to make demands and ask for benefits, pay increases and so forth. Men make more money not necessarily because the system is overtly discriminatory - though it well may be - but because men demand more. The book tends to belabor its point, and sometimes the evidence does not seem as well-presented as it might have been, but We found that it sheds useful light on a knotty social problem. Perhaps it will spur more women to fight - or to continue to fight - on their own behalf.

I read this book in almost one sitting. It has compelling factual data and riveting anecdotes. But, unlike Backlash, by Susan Faludi, which was almost totally negative, the authors also look at women's strengths in negotiation, and give some ideas for how to put their ideas into action.

It's not a how-to-negotiate book; I've spent the last 23 years practicing corporate law, negotiating sophisticated legal transactions and running an in-house department. This book goes beyond "how to" into "why". Essential reading for any woman!

This book is incredibly well-researched and thoughtfully laid out. It builds its case beautifully with interesting examples, then backs it up with empirical research. And credit to the authors' writing styles, for they do not point fingers or whine about the way things are. And they never fall into a dry style of writing. The book flows nicely, and is easy to read.
Most importantly, they shine a light on issues women have in asking for what they deserve and by laying out their case in such a well-articulated fashion, they help provide answers that we can all act upon and move forward with.
The issues that the book explores impact women across all facets of their life -- from negotiating child care responsibilites to getting the recognition and compensation they deserve on the job. As a co-author of the business book "The Old Girls' Network", I see these issues in evidence in how women buiness owners also negotiate -- for contracts, for customers, in how they price their products and reticence about charging appropriately. So, I would say this book has broad appeal to stay at home moms, women in corporate life and for the large contingent of female entrepreneurs. It is a must-have addition to all of our reading lists, and one that should bring positive results.

In recent comments about a novel featuring a women who was number 1 in her class--ahead of 262 men--former U.C. Berkeley, Boalt Hall Law School Dean Herma Hill Kay said: "Women in the law have come a long way since the l960s, making up 60 percent of this year's freshman class of Boalt, but, as in Poswall's book [THE LAWYERS: Class of '69], women are still treated differently in the classroom and in the courtroom." How can it be that even as a majority, women are not accorded the status this would imply?

Babcock and Laschever explain why. It is not enough to outnumber men; it is to value one's own worth. And, I might add, as a trial lawyer, I am often confronted with the fear of leaving a women on a jury to judge another women. As this book demonstrates, women can do it to other women as much as they do it to themselves.

Courageous women, like the real Herma Hill Kay, first women dean of Boalt Hall Law School, as well as the fictional character, Rose Contreras, in the above novel, have led the way, against hostility and prejudice in the 60s. Now, as Babcock and Laschever show, it is up to women in this generation to go the extra step to full equality, first in how they see themselves, and then in the workplace and in their personal lives. It should be comforting to realize that, finally, women are close to having control over their own lives. This book shows how.

Many women, unfortunately, feel they have to play a "game" to get ahead in business. This book revolves around two premises: Good Girls please others, Gutsy Girls please themselves. Whatever happened to focusing on results and what needs to be done at work? An effective person, male or female, doesn't matter which, focuses on the tasks and strategies that advance the business' objectives instead of playing gamesmanship (or in this case, gameswomanship) with others. Ms. White makes it sound so droll to be a "good girl" and denigrates her to no end, when in reality she is portraying a doormat straw-woman so that she can contrast with her "gutsy girl" persona who doesn't give a hoot about anyone but how she can get ahead and elbow her way to the top. Modern business relies on teamwork and collaboration, and such a self-centered approach will not get the best long term results.

Kate White offers a lot of self-empowering advice here, but after just having read Good to Great, I see that her advice is ONLY based on experience, not on any hard evidence. Some of this advice may work for her, but according to the facts in Good to Great, the leaders who make companies successful don't have the charisma she's talking about. At any rate, she offers some great tips for someone who likes to keep the status quo. She simply uses the doormat vs. gutsy woman approach to prove her point. (And her experience still has merit - look where she is now.)

Could be subtitled; How Not To Shoot Yourself in the Foot. I'd like to join in with the positive reviews of this book. I'm a business school student and I read this book on the recommendation of a visiting female executive. I've since lent it out to my classmates and have watched it be passes around from woman to woman. We love it! Evans offers simple, easy to relate to examples of behavior women adopt in the workplace that can be "career limiting." She openly challenges the reader to see which of her observations fit and which don't to each woman's unique situation. A well balanced, honest set of suggestions and observations that will benefit any woman seeking to advance in her career.

If you are a woman and have ever needed a reason to stop taking everything everybody says or does personally, this book says it. This is the guidebook to business that baby-boomer-females-in-the-businessplace never had. Gail Evans has lived what she preaches and speaks in a language women can understand. I was shaking my head "yes" throughout the book, as I recognized my own situation and frustrations in workplace. I knew it had something to do with my gender, but other than pointing the finger of blame at all men, I could not pinpoint what was happening in this male-created domain. I guess I thought I was the only person (read woman) who couldn't figure out the rules for success in the workplace. I also needed to hear the words from a very successful woman who learned by doing. I learned that I can still be a woman, but succeed in the male-created, male-dominated business world, and not feel like an imposter...which is exactly what one of her chapters deals with. You don't have to be a sell-out, but quit taking everything so damn personal....this is business. This is not a book written by a man who thinks he knows what women are thinking. And, it is not a book written by a woman who is so well-connected, or glamorous and beautiful, that you would wonder how she could not be a success in the businessplace. This is a book written by "one of us", and concentrates on exactly why many women struggle so hard to succeed in her job, no matter what that job is. If you are a manager, or a clerk, or anything in between, this book will help you as a female. I am giving a copy of this book to every working woman that I know...with a few exceptions; those who have already figured out the rules. Now I know why they are so successful, and it has nothing to do with their luck and my unluckiness. I feel so much better and unburdened after reading this book. I am going to keep it at my bedside and use it as my affirmation support..."I will not personalize workplace issues...I will not.....".

As a computer professional without a college degree, I found that I had learned some of the rules already by watching other men and then evaluating their responses to my behavior. I moved up the ladder by expecting more of myself and acting more like the men around me. The one thing I learned is if you want to be treated as an equal, you must ACT like an equal. Too many women whine and grouse about how they don't get what they think they deserve, when that is exactly what they are getting because while they're moving their lips, they're not DOING anything. My mother always told me that a closed mouth gathers no foot. Read the book, learn the basic rules, and then PRACTICE them whether you like it or not -- that is, if you really want to get ahead.

It seems only logically that girls and boys are brought up differently throughout their lives but most women seem to forget this too easily. This books brings the reader step-by-step through the "whys" behind female actions in the professional or personal arenas. It is not wrong for a woman to act a certain way but knowing what drives this action and how it is looked upon by the public is a window into the professional soul of a majority of women. It may not give women step-by-step instructions on how to get into the CEO chair but it will help women evaluate on a more sincere level why they do certain things or act certain ways and how they can change these actions to work for them instead of against them.

In contrary to what a lot of negative response I've read on here, that had denoted the book's values due to the fact that it carries sexist qualities, shows no sympathy to a woman's choice of lifestyle, and that the book is not written for a generalized community in a last-generation point of view: This book is not meant to be a pat on your back to make you feel better about your womanhood. If you want that, there are soap opera magazines out there teaching you how to raise your children. There are also other great books out there that are targetted towards the younger generation.

Gail Evan did not once say "this book is targetted for everyone". She's talking to the women who wants to succeed in the business sense, in a man's style. It represents her insights from her long travel, and it is her belief from experience that these are the issues that held women back from achieving the status they want. This book is for the women out there who is willing to make a change in life so to reach to a higher level in the game. It's not for sulking women who wants to juggle the 12098723 priorities of family and friends before business. (In that case, the book for you is "the 7 habits of highly effective people) Women who decides to rate this book should first put themselves in a mindset that this is not Oprah. The first point that is interesting about this book is the acceptance of the differences between the attitudes of men and women regarding their obligations at home and at work. Realising how we have been brought up, in a way that makes networking, taking risks or finding mentors much easier for men, is an important step towards changing our own attitudes that stand on our way to achieving our goals. I bought the book "Be Your Own Mentor" during a transitional time in my career. The advice offered has provided me with many great ideas on advancing my career. I thought the get ahead basics were especially helpful. As I was looking for a new position, the job search advice helped me to form opinions on how this new position could be a stepping stone to my future. It urged me to take a look at my career as a progression of jobs on my resume. Additionally, Sheila Wllington offered advice that I had not read in traditional job search books. I think this book is helpful to women at all stages of their career whether just starting out or ready for a mid-career change. If you think you need some advice from successful women and need some ideas on how to further your career I highly recommend this book.

I wish this book had been around when I was just starting out in business. I would be a lot better off today if I had gotten the great advice it gives out. Much of the writing is based on research done at Catalyst, so is fact-based. Shelia Wellington uses her vast experience and connections to give a road map for success for women in the business world. Many nuggets of advice from women who have reached the highest levels in their careers. A must read.

Being your own mentor is a critical concept and certainly includes mastering the art of networking. But a good self-mentoring plan must also include achieving corporate and community visibility. To really take charge of your career there is no substitute for creating a strategic 'personal' publicity plan. Your boss won't do it, and neither will your mentor. It is up to YOU. People have to know who you are, what you stand for, and why they should hire you, promote you, or do business with you. That's really taking charge of your career.

I wish I'd had Be Your Own Mentor years ago. It's chock-full of what to do when you're trying to get ahead at work, with do's and don'ts I've not heard anywhere else. It explains the kinds of jobs that will take you to the top and tells you which won't. And something else it does that you can't get elsewhere: women at the top (like Carly Fiorina of Hewlett Packard) tell you what to do when specific problems arise at work -- like how to land an assignment you want, or what to do when you meet bias, or how to get people who can help you on your side. Includes useful tips on building credibility and taking charge of how you're perceived, or for getting out of a dead end situation with a difficult boss, plus sensible advice about dealing with guilt as you're balancing personal life and work. As someone in her early 30s who is juggling motherhood and an extrmely challenging career, I have not had time to read Glamour or Cosmo so did not realize this topic has been thoroughly discussed as the other reviewers have stated.

However, I did enjoy the book. It was a quick and easy read which I could do in small bites, which is all that my schedule allows for these days.

In many cases, I felt like the authors were speaking directly to me or about me.

I really enjoyed the stories about the ground breaking women of the previous generation...I wish there were more!

I thought this was not only the best women's-issues book I have read in a long time but a book that spoke to me as a man very effectively too. The authors do an extremely impressive and insightful analysis of the issues touching 30 year olds (I am 30) today. They capture many different dimensions and never take an easy or partisan way out. Their conclusions and recommendations for actions will appeal to a very broad range of people in a wide swath of their lives. If nothing else, this book will be worth it for the drop in your blood pressure as you realize how many of your deepest worries are both pandemic and manageable.

When I first started reading this book, I raved about it and told all my friends that they would have to read it. I'm having my own midlife crisis at 33 because I'm facing gender discrimination in my career, which is blocking me from achieving what I want and know I can do. I was agonizing over making a drastic career change, when my incredibly supportive husband bought this book for me. He thought it would help to know I wasn't alone in my unhappiness.

And it did help. We Gen-X women were brought up to believe that equality had been achieved and if only we work hard enough we could do whatever we want. And when we don't accomplish all of our dreams, we tend to blame ourselves, instead of the system. At the same time, our entire generation is agonizing about spending too much time at work and missing out on a life.

But somewhere in the middle, it became tedious. It took me forever to finish, because I grew tired of reading yet another story about an ultra-successful woman with baby fever. As a woman who loves children but doesn't want any of her own, the book lost me. A few things actually bothered me, like the "Baby Envy" section and a general sense that the only women faced with work/life crises were mothers. There are plenty of women that struggle to find a balance between career and family, even if that family is a husband, siblings, or close friends.

I wish the authors had more analysis of what's causing the pervasive work/life imbalances and how we should stick together to make a change for all of us. When I read the chapter on men's perspectives, I kept thinking, "We shouldn't be concerned about bosses discriminating against parents because they leave work before 6:30, we should be concerned that bosses are expecting any of their employees to work that long in the first place!

There were many insightful observations and perspectives that I hadn't considered before, and for that I'm glad I read the book. I found the first and last two chapters to be the most influential on me. I'm not as enthusiastic as many other reviewers, but I do recommend this book to everyone in Generation X/Y, and to even a few boomers that want to understand why their children are so troubled when they seem to "have it all."

This book's style seems to put some people off-personally-it didn't bother me. I found it very readable. More importantly-I found that it hit exactly the points that I'm struggling with in my life at the moment ("around 30). This was the first time I had even looked at the issues in my life (about being a mother vs reaching my career potential post grad school) as a larger phenomenon with many women. A friend loaned me this book, and although we are in different positions in life we both found that it resonated with us because we have the same things on our mind. Perhaps "crisis" isn't the best name for the book since I would not define the amazing birth of my son at the same time as a promotion at a great job as a crisis-but it does demand hard choices. I think they make mention several times to basically being very fortunate in general. I don't know any of my friends who couldn't relate to a large portion of this book in some way shape or form whether you are wondering about how you would ever fit children in your life or how you will keep your career on track if you want to spend time with your kids. And of course-finances are the practical base of these choices as well.

The only saving grace of this book are the interviews of women from all walks of life -- including actress Susan Sarandon, comedian Ali Wentworth, financial expert Suze Orman, and writer Judy Blume --- about what they were doing at age 30 and what they are doing today, as proof that it is not a bad thing that you don't have everything tied up in a neat package by age 30.

However, the statement the authors make that "30 is the new 50" is wrong (they are more accuarate when they state that 30 is to a woman what 50 is to a man). The adage "Don't trust anyone over 30" has been around since the 1960s, and they in fact mention a photo of one of their mothers wearing a T-shirt with that on it when she was in her 20s!

I dislike that the authors bring themselves into it so much, like they are our best friends and we looked up to them and --- surprise! -- they had so much doubt about themselves at age 30. Their stories are not all that interesting.

And WHY, when they bring in an original interview about another late 20s/early 30s woman, they preface it with how she looks? Particularly annoying was when they described a woman as having "green eyes behind sexy librarian-style glasses". What does THAT have to do with anything? If anything, they overlook the fact that fashion magazines ignore women after age 30 (which frankly made me happy whren I turned 30 -- no more pressure, however subtle, to adhere to those "Thirty Things to do Before Age 30.")

It's all right, but if you read Cosmo, Glamour and the other mags at all over the last 5 years, you've read this book. Because once a year, each of those mags write on this topic. Ho hum. ... Read more

PR pundits and business owners Friedman and Yorio tackle the fear factor of women who want to quit their day job and build a business. They ask, "Are you the girl to run the show?"They answer with a sassy list of pros and cons ("You will be able to get to your child's school play, but you will think about money all the time.") and with tough questions ("Could you negotiate a reasonable rent with an unreasonable landlord?)

Every chapter is packed with interviews, charts, quizzes and witty directives about self-employment. Among their greatest hits: what's in a name, choosing logos, ten inspiring business chick flicks, legal eagles, business speak and visibility in professional associations. Friedman and Yorio sweat the small stuff. They explain, for example, why you shouldn't eat spaghetti at a business lunch and how to ask revealing questions of a potential employee or computer consultant. The authors' premise, "let women be women" is most compelling when they explore the unique challenges women face--from finding female role models to being a boss "without being a bitch."

They are on shakier ground with the arguable assumption that all women share distinct gender styles and strengths. This type casting and the "girl friend" tone can sometimes belittle the book's smart and strategic ideas for becoming the boss. I love this book. This is aimed for women who want to start their own business. It's the only business book that I've read and its pretty easy to follow, the girls breakdown what you need to know, how to go about doing your own business, they're very inspiring and encouraging. They give you advice on how to deal with a lot of stuff when it comes to having your own business. Everything about having a plan to starting and keeping your business. Its so wonderful. There are lots of books out there about having your own business, and this is the one to buy if you're just starting out.

The book covers subjects like: if you're ready to own your own business, which business is right for you, legalities like licenses, permits, financials, funding, a business plan, promoting your business or product, what to do when you're the boss, acting like a professional, technology for your business, they also cover proposals, presentations and other business writing, at the end they give websites and other advice to finish off the book.

I'm glad that this book has been published, the advice in this book is very realistic. You can apply this advice in your life. These girls know what they're talking about.

Caitlin Friedman and Kimberly Yorio wrote "The Girl's Guide To Starting Your Own Business" for female entrepreneurs looking for advice and encouragement.

Several years ago, when working as publicists for a New York publishing company, Friedman and Yorio realized that they were essentially running a little PR company-supervising employees and managing budgets-within their larger organization. But, they didn't receive the financial rewards. So, they decided to start their own PR business.

Friedman and Yorio write: "...we visited bookstores and conduced on-line searches to find information that would help us navigate the terrifying waters of self-employment. What we found were books that ranged from the vaguely helpful to the downright unreadable. We found books on marketing and books on funding, books on partnerships and books on parachutes. We found a lot of books about how to sound like a man and think like a man. But who wants to do that? ... What we never found was the book that said, 'You can do it, girl. All you need is ____, ____, and ____!" This book will fill in the blanks. And there are a lot of blanks."

Friedman and Yorio do a good job filling in the blanks. They discuss the good things and the bad things about running your own company. Selecting an attorney and an accountant is covered. Hiring, firing, and managing employees are also discussed as is office technology. And, some down-home advice is given for home-based business entrepreneurs, such as don't lie down on the couch or you'll fall asleep. And, "The to-do list is your friend."

A short list of questions helps readers decide if they'd be good entrepreneurs. (Hint: the authors suggest: "If you are not a hard worker-don't even think about starting your own business." Even part-time entrepreneurs work hard. They just don't work as many hours.)

Friedman and Yorio also tell us that we'll need to learn about taxes. They write:
"Even if you hire an accountant and bookkeeper, you are ultimately responsible for knowing these laws. And for some people (us included) this is torture. Not knowing has gotten us in trouble, like the $1,000 bill we had to pay the state government for not knowing about the timing for paying payroll taxes. Rats!"

If you enjoy doing payroll taxes-W-2s, W-4s, 940s, 941s, and more-they say knock yourself out. But, for the rest of us, if we have two employees or more, Friedman and Yorio suggest using a payroll service company to do payroll. (If you operate as a sole proprietor or a one-person LLC, and you have no other employees, you don't need to worry about payroll taxes.)

Friedman and Yorio tell women entrepreneurs to find experienced business mentors. The authors write: "A great place to start is the Office of Women's Business Ownership, at (part of the Small Business Association). They manage the Women's Network For Entrepreneurial Training (WNET), which matches successful women business owners with new entrepreneurs. Or try a local chapter of a women's business organization, such as the National Association of Women Business Owners...They frequently offer workshops, lunches, and lectures, where you can interact with many potential mentors."

The book contains short question and answer blurbs ("Girl Talk") with successful women entrepreneurs who run a variety of companies, ranging from literary agencies and executive search firms to restaurants and freelance writing businesses.

Friedman and Yorio ask the manager at Springboard Center for Women and Enterprise ("...the largest venture capital forum that specifically focuses on women...") to provide "...the skinny on the big bucks."

The manager notes: "One of the keys to getting VC [Venture Capital] money is access and connections. Historically, VC money has gone to men. ... It's really all about connections and who you know. Men tend to have many more connections, through business school or industry, and can get their foot in the door easier."

Overall, female entrepreneurs or soon-to-be entrepreneurs will find easy-reading help and quality advice in "The Girl's Guide To Starting Your Own Business." You Go Girl!

I read this book with the question, "Would I have benefited from this book when I started my own business?"

The answer is, "In some ways, yes." The authors create an energetic spirit through their upbeat, easy-to-read style. You find yourself saying, "Sure -- I can do this!" And, although increasing numbers of women are opening their own businesses, many identify with gender-based guides.

The authors focus as much on product as service businesses, and they discuss businesses with employees as well as solo acts. As a result, they offer a broad base, recognizing that readers must go elsewhere to achieve depth on any one topic.

The usefulness of specific guidance varies a great deal. The authors are best when dealing with matters of spirit and attitude. For example: "Keep emotions at home," "employees are not friends," and "recite these ten mantras regularly."

However, the section on mentoring can be misleading to a newbie. As a former academic, I had to chuckle when I read (p. 227): "Maybe the dean of the business school is a generous and knowledgeable soul who likes nothing more than to give advice to female entrepreneurs." In my experience, deans give free advice only to those outsiders who are likely to become large-scale donors. And I haven't met too many business school deans who are "generous and knowledgeable souls." These days, you have to expect to pay for mentors unless you are very, very lucky.

So bottom line, I'd recommend reading this book for energy and a "let's get going" mentality. You can get the specific how-tos elsewhere.
