After a devastating layoff, this book has given me the energy to get out there and find my dream job. If I follow the book's instructions, I know I'll find one in no time!!

While this book was extremely informative about the changing textile industry in the mid-nineteenth century, I would not recommend it to anyone looking for interesting reading. Dublin was very precise in his statistical information regarding the make-up of the industry and those involved and was clearly well informed on the topic. So overall, I would recommend it to textile fanatics, only they would find the book entertaining. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended!
Mary Kay, Inc., is perhaps best known for two things: the cult of personality surrounding its founder, Mary Kay Ash, and the fact that it rewards successful salespeople with pink Cadillacs. In this illuminating book, management expert Jim Underwood delves into the guiding principles of Mary Kay, Inc.'s daily operations, which remain, 40 years later, true to Ash's founding vision. Countries or corporations founded by a charismatic leader often sag or sink when that leader inevitably steps down. Mary Kay's leadership was unique in that she built a solid foundation for the company so it could continue without her day-to-day guidance. This corporate biography represents the first time the privately owned company allowed an outsider complete access to its managers and employees, enabling Underwood to persuasively illustrate nine leadership rules with testimonies from members of the "Mary Kay family." We recommend this to anyone who aspires to leadership. Mary Kay may look fluffy, but it's all about the firm.

3-0 out of 5 stars "Nothing happens until somebody sells something."
The book was interesting enough to keep me listening all the way until the end. I listened to the 6 CD version of the book on the way to work.
Without being associated with Mary Kay, I had a hard time relating to the experience the author was trying to convey.
If I had some first hand experience with the product or the sales staff, my opinion of the book might be different.
It sounds like a fine company. Based on the individual stories in the book and the company sales statistics, the company merits high praise. It seems as if they offer a wonderful culture and opportunity to anyone who might be interested in selling. I must say after reading Jack Straight from the Gut first, I can not think of a greater contrast in management style than that of Mary Kay and Jack Welch at GE. Two successful companies - Two completely different management/leadership styles. I sounds like Mary Kay applied the Dale Carnegie method to her company and people.
The Nine Keys:
Create and Maintain a Common Bond
Create the Future: Think and Act Strategically
Make Me Feel Important
Motivate Others with Recognition and Celebration
Never Leave Your Values
Innovate or Evaporate
Foster Balance: God, Family, Career
Have a Higher Purpose
OK Never Does It: You've gotta been Great!

This is not a self help type of books for MK consultants. It describes the type of leadership you will find at the MK headquarters and throughout the company. Many business owners and corporations could learn a thing or two from this book, as well as the lay person in search of living a better life and improve their interpersonal skills. I am a consultant and now I understand many things I've been learning from my directors. If you are in MK you MUST get the book. If you are a business owner, YOU MUST also get the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun book with valid information for women in business.
How to succeed in business without a penis offers advice for women wanting to succeed in a man's world. Gives insight into male behavior, and offers strategies for women wanting to play by their own rules. Rather than explaining how to join the "old boy's club", this book provides a blueprint for building a career that exploits the myths of women in business

5-0 out of 5 stars funny, exciting and refreshing
WOW! It is so refreshing to read a useful book for the modern business woman that has some real humor to it. This book gives anyone, rookies to veterans, the real-life tips they'll need to survive in the corporate jungle while adding a laught or two -- and all the while, the author manages to stay fairly politically correct in her opinions. Enough of those stuffy business books! This one is a perfect mix for business in the '90's.

1-0 out of 5 stars another terrible book
This is yet another sexist book my Karen Salmansohn. The reference to "penis" in the book title is symbolic of a petty woman with unconscious disdain for men.Every book this woman writes has the same familiar, boring anti-male undertones. My wife says she got nothing from reading this book, she ended up putting the book in our box to go to the salvation army.

5-0 out of 5 stars Humor and Help
Interesting book -- contains both humor and help. What convinced me to buy and read it ? Why, the negative comments from Patriarchs !! Sexism is alive (sometimes seems to thrive) in the USA today. If some men are threatened by this book, maybe that it is a good sign. Salmansohn is a fun and interesting author, as seen again and again in her books. I also like her newest, 'How To Change Your Entire Life By Doing Absolutely Nothing' -- which is another good blend of humor and help.

1-0 out of 5 stars Another worthless book
Yet another worthless book from Karen. This author loves to take any opportunity to attack anything thats symbolically male, including in this case, the world of business which was created by men.Men should not feel guilty or apologize for that fact either, nor should they be sympathetic of the "female struggle" in business or any other domain of men.Its important to note also that men created the free-enterprise system and all business schools,as well as higher-education in general. ... Book Description

This volume gives the first in-depth look at the sizeable population of women who are domestic workers in Latin America and the Caribbean. Twenty-two essays document how these women have begun to struggle for recognition of their social role in the family unit, for the right to organize, and for the legislation and programs already won by other members of the working class. They have decided to be "muchachas"—"girls"—no more, but rather household workers, women with a profession. ... Read more

A colorful mix of historical narrative, revealing personal memoir, and sassy industry tell-all, A Big Life in Advertising offers up Mary Wells Lawrence's bubbling take on life, love, and plugging products. Well, spills it into your lap, actually. Spanning four decades in the world of advertising and the life of one of its star players, A Big Life oozes with juicy details and insider revelations.

After an inspiring stint as one of the infamous Bill Bernbach's protégés, Lawrence really began her career at Jack Tinker & Partners, revolutionizing the images of such brands as Alka-Seltzer and Braniff Airways. But when denied the title of president, Lawrence "let loose the bear," as she puts it, and with the creative team of Stewart Greene and Dick Rich, set up shop as Wells Rich Greene. Over the course of the next quarter century, Lawrence and her cast of characters "made theatre out of the advertising business," giving brands like Benson & Hedges, American Motors, TWA, Midas, and Procter & Gamble's Gleem toothpaste their turn on the stage of stardom. While Lawrence's story is less about her agency's creative work and more about her impressions of and interactions with virtually everyone who was anyone in the advertising world of the '70s and '80s, she does include glimpses into her own childhood, life as a mother, and battles with cancer, adding a touch of reality to an otherwise glittering world. Some readers may feel Lawrence's opinion of her own beauty and charm plays too prominent a role in her reminiscing, but she was, after all, an adventurous queen bee in a glamorous world. Her chatty style of writing, and her ebullient enthusiasm for all she has experienced and accomplished, make this book read more like a novel than a memoir. It's an entertaining, fast-paced tale of a big star's big life. --S. Ketchum ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars BIG - but still a secret from the rest of us!
This is a worthwhile book for anyone interested in business in general, and advertising specifically. Mary Wells Lawrence relates the "facts" of her professional life story well, and even delves a little bit into her personal life. The keys/reminders of how the best business relationships are forged are peppered among tales of how she WON the business, almost LOST clients and then miraculously redeemed the situation, and this adds drama and sometimes makes for compelling reading. She never goes beneath the surface, however, and ultimately this wasn't as satisfying a read as I'd hoped for. She might have revealed some of her worst FLUBS, as well - disasters tend to be even more revealing than successes, and we certainly learn more from failure! She also rarely tells her own emotional "take" on the events of her life - After reading this, I have no doubt that she's had A BIG LIFE - but she's holding back so much, the reader is never "clued in" as to what REALLY matters in this BIG LIFE of hers!?

4-0 out of 5 stars A must for anyone interested in advertising
This story of Mary's life has inspired me. I went to school for advertising but got out and started looking for a job bartending. It seemed easier and I liked the idea of tips. After reading this book however, I really want to work for an agency, maybe, just maybe my life could turn out somewhat similar to hers. I would reccommend this book to anyone interested at all in advertising, especially those in college looking at advertising as a career path. Then I'd tell those people to go to a portfolio school when they get out with their B.A.s.

2-0 out of 5 stars Really not that great
Unless you are an advertising industry buff or somehow admire Mary Wells Lawrence this book is just average. There are a few interesting spots but for the most part she is just talking herself up.

4-0 out of 5 stars For old ad guys and gals
This is indeed a poorly written book, but it does share the insight of a great icon of the 70s and 80s ad game. For those who were/are in advertising, the perspective Lawrence gives is fun to remember when people and personalities really made a difference. An easy read, a few insights but really like reminiscing with a colleague about the "good old days." Lots of us would have loved to have just one of those tales to tell. The other reviews I've read on Amazon are pretty accurate. Reader beware.

3-0 out of 5 stars An interesting (ego-driven) look back at an amazing career
Part memoir, part advertising history lesson.

She's done a lot and has a lot to say. Now, we have a lot read through.

It is an intimate look back at by-gone era of advertising. Her agency was one of the most influential in history. Mary's personal life is pretty interesting too. But there's a lot here.

I'd recommend this to anyone who is interested in advertising history or just a fan of Mary herself.
Probably not the best for anyone breaking to the field. ... Read more

I purchased and read this book three years ago when I was a college student. I read it and honesty have to say didn't put much thought into the valuable information and advice until I entered the "Real World" aka life after college. Since working in Corporate America for the last 2 1/2 years I realize I will never be paid my worth unless I go into business for myself.
This book will lay the foundation for women that are serious about taking control of their financial destiny and life. This is a must read for women serious about success.

5-0 out of 5 stars Believe and Succeed
At last a book to inspire and encourage black women to attain greatness. Both my self esteem and belief in my own abilities grew and grew as I read this book. It not only provides a guide to starting your own business, it also makes you believ you can succeed just like our mother and grandmothers, only we didn't see their efforts as entrepreneurial. I appreciate the history of the women of my family more and inspired by the book are working at becoming a part of that history by establishing my own business. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

1-0 out of 5 stars A sexist and sad book
Why women should buy this book? Are they really in need for this kind of "confidence boost" or we already know that women can compete head-to-head with men?

My advice is simple: If you need this book, then you should look for a career where you don't need to compete with anyone, neither man or woman.

5-0 out of 5 stars We are leaders, yes - now hear us roar!
This is a wonderful book that should bolster the confidence of all the women who read it. But I would add one very important item: women show far too much humility about their talents and skills. If we want people to value our skills, we must first show that we value ourselves - by making sure our accomplishments are visible to targeted audiences. If we want people to hire us, buy from us, and invest in our companies, they have to know who we are, what we have accomplished and why they should do business with us! Self-promotion is not bragging. It is a valuable business tool that careerwomen must add to their strategies for success.

2-0 out of 5 stars Why the Best Man for the Job is a Woman
Save your money! The authors hopelessly biased style and language is a big turn-off. Any useful information is obscured by the overly general "truths" about the innate supperiority of women to men. I found this book to be a BIG dissapointment. There are much better books out there that offer similar substance with a more positive and believable tone. Get one of them!

5-0 out of 5 stars Thoughtful and Informative--Read it and learn.
Esther Wachs brings something to the table with this one. Writing in a style that's both lucid and engaging, she unpacks the mysteries of how the feminine mystique is shaping the digital age. Useful, check that please, ESSENTIAL reading for men too!

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book
This fresh look at women professionals is both entertaining and informative. An excellent reporter and writer, Esther Wachs Book provides in-depth profiles of women CEOs and business leaders (many of whom rarely speak to the press) as she shows how traditionally "female" qualities are assets in today's business climate. A fast, fascinating read! ... Read more

Book Description

In Our Separate Ways, authors Ella Bell and Stella Nkomo take an unflinching look at the surprising differences between black and white women's trials and triumphs on their way up the executive ladder. Based on groundbreaking research that spanned eight years, Our Separate Ways compares and contrasts the experiences of 120 black and white female managers in the American business arena. In-depth histories bring to life the women's powerful and often difficult journeys from childhood to professional success, highlighting the roles that gender, race, and class played in their development.

Although successful professional women come from widely diverse family backgrounds, educational experiences, and community values, they share a common assumption upon entering the workforce: "I have a chance." Along the way, however, they discover that people question their authority, challenge their intelligence, and discount their ideas. And while gender is a common denominator among these women, race and class are often wedges between them.

In Our Separate Ways, you will find candid discussions about stereotypes, learn how black women's early experiences affect their attitudes in the business world, become aware of how white women have-perhaps unwittingly-aligned themselves more often with white men than with black women, and see ways that our country continues to come to terms with diversity in all of its dimensions.

Whether you are a human resources director wondering why you're having trouble retaining black women, a white female manager considering the role of race in your office, or a black female manager searching for perspective, you will find fresh insights about how black and white women's struggles differ and encounter provocative ideas for creating a better workplace environment for everyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars TRUTH HUURTS?
GOOD BOOK. BUT I HAVE NEVER HAD AN INTERRACIAL FRIENDSHIP WITH A WHITE AMERICAN WOMAN. MY FRIENDS WERE EITHER EUROPEAN, ASIAN, AFRICAN, CARIBBEAN, SOUTH AMERICAN, OR BLACK. IM NOT EVEN INTERESTED IN CLOSING THE GAP WE'VE HAD BETWEEN EACH OTHER SINCE SLAVERY. AND EVEN IF WHITE WOMEN AND BLACK WOMEN ARE FRIENDS IN CORPORATE AMERICA, BLACK WOMEN STILL GET PAID LESS. ITS UNFAIR AND I DONT WANT ANYTHING TO DO WITH SOMEONE WHO THINKS THE WORD WOMAN, FEMININE, OR LADY MEANS WHITE.

5-0 out of 5 stars At the Sharp End
Bell and Nkomo dive straight to the heart of the matter. They base their findings on comprehensive personal interviews of African-American and white women working as managers or executives. Ultimately, the authors hit the reader over the head with the obvious: People from strikingly different backgrounds bring profound personal differences to the workplace. Too often, organizations stupidly attempt homogenizing everyone into minor variations on the existing (typically---older, white, and male) leadership theme. Unusually (Bell and Nkomo cited no such cases), organizations may wisely embrace the differences so that the organization and its people benefit from a more perceptive and inclusive world view.

Folks who need not spend their working hours "fitting in" contribute (A) more (B) less to the organization. Leaders who accept their people for who and what they are get (A) more (B) less from their subordinates. Guess where the authors suggest the readers take their outfits.

4-0 out of 5 stars Imagining and working with the Other
If you are wondering why the Black woman in your section of your company doesn't seem to want to socialize with you or seems guarded around her White co-workers or why the White women in your organization get all riled up about sexism but are silent when it comes to racism this is the book for you. I recommend this book along with Divided Sisters for those who really want Black and White women to unite in the workplace. These two tomes will give you more than a clue. They'll give you guidelines as how to build a truly "diverse" workplace where everyone is welcomed AS THEY ARE and not as stereotypes others want them to play out. If you are a Black woman, you'll understand why you see your work status merely as a "job" and not as a career and why you feel so much like an outsider looking in at your organization.

The only reason I didn't give this book 5 stars is that I wanted more in-depth analysis of how the White female managers confronted the idea of Black women as equals (and not just on the job), something I've experienced that White women have a difficult time doing in the workplace.

5-0 out of 5 stars Our Separate Ways: Black and White Women
This book is a must for anyone who is interested in the career paths of women in the corporate world. That would include spouses of, grown children of, and parents of women. It is based upon Harvard research including in-depth case studies of both white and black women from childhood to the present day, career journeys one will find fascinating. When the reader returns to his/her workplace after completing this book, diversity will take on a more significant meaning. This book is also a useful tool in college career development classes. Rather than a dull read, it keeps the reader coming back for more. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars THE GENTEEL POOR FIGHT BACK: VALUABLE 19TH CENTURY HISTORY
Dr. Kathleen Waters Sander (Ph.D. - History, U. of MD.) has written an extremely valuable book centered on the women's industrial exchange movement of the 19th century.Ruthless 19th century capitalism (also known as "capitalism at its finest") was not controlled or regulated by government, and offered no "safety nets" or benefits. Many individuals and families lived the "genteel life" during the 19th century fortemporary periods, then were unceremoniously tossed off of the gravy train into the world of poverty.....a world for which they were often tragically unsuited, often even than those impoverished their entire lives.

The women's exchange movement provided relief for previously "genteel" women suddenly or graduallyreduced to circumstances bordering on desperation. In more than 70 American cities, a system of consignment retail shops was set up in which
"consignors" (previously genteel but subsequently impoverished women) could offer domestic products (mostly sewing and needlework items) for sales anonymously. The "shame" of impoverishment was hidden, capitalism's sins were uncomplained about, and some income for desperate women and their dependents was achieved. The brutal policing visited on those who complained about expoitation by the capitalist system was escaped.

The women's industrial exchange movement was remarkable for its ingenuity and its imagination, and also for its longevity.Today, women's industrial exchange tea rooms and other facilities still operate and function, in some situations (as in Baltimore, Maryland) in facilities more than a century old.

At the dawn of the 21st century, the model and mentality of the women's industrial movement, described well by Dr. Sander, is a shining light of hope for impoverished people in a world where protections against capitalistic rapacityand greed are clearly disappearing completely.Neither government nor disappearing "benefits" (retirement pensions, health insurance, etc.) offered by companies to gullible employees seem likely to protect vulnerable people any longer. The loss of government promised "benefits" in all catagories seems very likely for the great majority of citizens as the new century progresses.

Self-help actions independent of government and employers alike seem the best hope. The women's industrial exchange movement of the 19th century is a splendid model of how independent self-help action can work. It's truly inspiring, and a detailed history of its origins, successes, problems, and management such as that offered by Dr. Kathleen Sander is worth reading. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great BOOK - Great INTERVIEW
I read this great book and literally begged Kristie to let me write a preface for it so I could share my experience of working from home. During our tough economic times this book is sorely needed. She reveals some easy-to-follow strategies for starting and operating a home based business.

Is it just a book for women? No way! I'm a guy and I believe I got just as much out it as most women would.

I also interviewed Kristie T on "The Inside Success Show" and I can tell you she really does love her life. She gave away powerful tips for having a home-based business you'll love too.
Here's some of what she shared:
** Why you should decide what you want and do what pleases you
** What are 5 essential elements to a happy home office
** How to make time for your business and your family
** What easy changes you can make now to "Love Your Life!"
** How you can brand yourself for a lifetime of business success
** And much, much more ...

5-0 out of 5 stars Truly Excellent!
I started this book fully prepared to dislike it - I've read many others on this topic and ALL of them have recommended extensive child care for the kids, have supported long hours away from the children, and have been generally negative about how children 'get in the way' of your business. I see working at home under those kinds of guidelines as no better than working outside the home - and maybe worse. However, this book was very, VERY forthright in its intention - promoting work at home so that one can spend more time doing what is most important - with spending time with family at the top of the list. The author makes it clear that a work at home parent needs to set limits on how much time they work and that they need to remember that their families are their first priority and their whole reason for going this route. She offers excellent tips on how to be a good, present and interactive parent while managing a very successful WAH business. I was truly impressed.

This aspect aside, this book is an amazing collection of facts and data and experience - it is VERY complete and thorough on the topic of putting together and running a home business. She includes a massive number of resources. I feel this is the only book a mother who wanted to WAH would need to get started and do well.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's in there!
This book contains everything you'll want to know about starting and growing a successful home-based business. Kristi's advice ranges from how to identify your passion to turning your strengths and creative ideas into a viable business. It's packed with useful checklists, links, and resources. It's ideal for both stay-at-home MOMS and DADS. A must read!

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE for everyone who wants to work from home.
I have set up 3 home-based businesses and have operated as a Business & Life Coach for the past three years. Not only has Kristie's book taught me so much about the practical issues around effectively establishing a SUCCESSFUL home business, it will be a real asset to my current and future clients who are headed that way, as I will gift them this Treasure Trove of a book. It is full of practical, sound advice and will guide anyone through the processes of getting up and running in a well organized manner. I only wish I had Kristie's wonderful book 20 years ago! THANKS KRISTIE, FOR YOUR PEARLS OF WISDOM.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this book!
It is complete and so full of great advice. From start to end it has awesome information especially if you are just starting a business or even for thinking of making the change from home to office. I bought it because a friend told me about it. It is very scary for me to make this change. Kristie makes it easy and kind of leads you step by step. I was especially happy to see that right on the front cover is a great quote and endorsement from author of Mommy-CEO, Jodie Lynn. Put the two books together and you have answers about how, why, what and when in regard to working from home and Mrs. Lynn's book offers how to handle the little darlings underfoot. That's a big deal. While her parenting tips cover tons of things on family challenges, Mrs. Tamsevicius tells us how to get on the ball and make a new life for ourselves. They are fantastic together and have helped me get my ideas onto paper and kids under control so I can follow through with my personal goals. YIPPEE - now I'm moving ahead and getting things done. ... Read more

Book Description

Discover 307 awesome money-making strategies that work!

This revolutionary book has 20 informative, inspirational, irreverent chapters to help women business owners be more successful. Whether you are a female entrepreneur, a professional woman climbing the corporate ladder, or a woman (or man!) dreaming of starting your own company, you've got to have this book. Gutsy ideas for femme fatales, grande dames, and wonder women abound here. The material covers everything from generating free publicity (then truly profiting from it) to advertising on the cheap from forming strategic alliances to capitalizing on nontraditional sales channels. Women Business Owners Wage a Revolution

Sassy lasses are starting new companies at twice the rate of macho males. This isn't a fad. It isn't a trend. It's a revolution. According to statistics released by the Business Women's Network, it's estimated that by 2005, fully 50 percent of all American businesses will be owned by women, thus significantly increasing the growth rate of new enterprises. This is a gender bender of huge proportions and far-reaching ramifications.

"These entrepreneurial women will change the face of business," predicts Marilyn Ross, author of the new book Shameless Marketing for Brazen HussiesTM. "Woman is blessed with a nurturing nature. We're intuitive, good listeners, and well organized. Plus we think holistically, are as tenacious as pit bulls, and can use our sensuality as a powerful agent for change in the marketplace."

Ross contends that as stewards of their own talents and gifts, women are possibility thinkers. To fully succeed in today's competitive and complicated business environment they must be clever. Gutsy. Dedicated. Technologically savvy. Service oriented."We can have just as much 'juice' as the guys and play hardball to the max," she says. "We just do it differently."

Shameless Marketing for Brazen HussiesTM: 307 Awesome Money-Making Strategies for Savvy Entrepreneurshas 16 informative, inspirational, irreverent chapters to help female entrepreneurs kick butt. The material covers everything from generating free publicity (then truly capitalizing on it) to advertising on the cheap from forming strategic alliances to unveiling nontraditional sales channels. Dozens of helpful Web sites put this guide on the cutting edge, andpersonal stories of successful female entrepreneurs encourage as they edify. The book shows women how to be risk takers. Rule breakers. Rainmakers.

As of 1999, there were 9.1 million women-owned businesses in the U.S. employing over 27.5 million people and generating $3.6 trillion in sales. Yet women traditionally make less in their ventures than do men. Ross is out to change that. "We must develop a marketing mind-set that capitalizes on our feminity; one that allows estrogen and entrepreneurship to mix and create excellence." This book points the way. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars "Brazen Hussies" Will Jump Start Your Business Marketing
Okay, the title's a scream but when you open it up you'll find Ross' book jam-packed full of ideas that if they don't get you a little excited, well, check your pulse. As someone who's worked in advertising copywriting, public relations, marketing research, strategic planning and done a lot of sales I have a fairly extensive library of marketing books. This one is top's on my list because it takes a subject that many women unfortunately shy away from and makes it fresh, fun, easily approachable and 100 percent rock solid. A must for any woman (or man) interested in de-mystifying the process of moving products and services from you to the happy end consumer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Move over Jay Conrad Levinson!
Best $20 you'll spend this year on growing your business. Incredibly up-to-date marketing power plays like: "Niches spell riches" "Kick yourself in the assets" "Syndicated columnists = instant stardom" "Booking radio talk shows because you're the expert" "Get in catalogs - there are several that sell to your target market" Don't pass up this book if you are interested in the wisdom of one of the greatest entrepreneurs and authors of our time - Marilyn Ross. These techniques are fun, easy and quickly REWARDING.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT!
Great book. I never write reviews, but it was so good I was compelled to write this. Great ideas, not too advanced, not too simplistic.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's not just for Brazen Hussies any more
This book is a gold mine of useful strategies and resources. While it ia targeted at women, as a man I find it packed with ways to market more effectively. I find the web resources cited very useful. I recommend this book to all marketers who want to penetrate their markets more deeply and more profitably.

5-0 out of 5 stars Buckle Your Seatbelts, Get Your Brain in Gear, and Go!
Don't be deterred by the title and subtitle, nor by the sometimes overheated diction. (Initially, I was.) This book provides an abundance of practical strategies, tactics, and suggestions which can be of invaluable assistance to males as well as to females, to corporate marketing executives as well as to entrepreneurs. Without apologies, Ross has an in-your-face style. She wastes neither her time nor her reader's in getting to the point, nailing it, and then moving on to another point.

She organizes the material within six Parts:

I. Empowering Marketing Maneuvers

II. Illuminating Publicity Techniques for Femme Fatales and Grande Dames

Note: As I previously suggested, ignore the overheated diction.

III. "Out of the Box" Thinking -- Nontraditional Marketing

IV. Mission Possible -- Unstoppable Direct Marketing

V. Maximize Your Strengths -- More Gutsy Strategies for Wonder Women

NOTE: See previous "Note."

VI. Sources & Resources Packed With More Power Than a Protein Bar

She also includes a "Recommended Reading" section. Because other excellent books have been published since 2000, I presume to suggest several at the conclusion of this review.

Ross obviously favors a tone and diction in her writing which could perhaps (just perhaps) distract some readers from the fundamentally sound material she provides. She may seem playful at time but she is nonetheless quite serious about the importance of combining prudent speed with relentless determination to achieve what Jim Collins calls a BEHAG: a Big Hairy Audacious Goal. Only in recent years have women somehow overcome formidable barriers to achieve success in the business world, most of which were installed and then sustained by men. Today, at least 80% (and probably more) of the growth our nation's GNP has been achieved by companies with 20 or fewer employees and a substantial majority of those companies are owned by women.

This book will be of substantial benefit to those women but also to other women who need both encouragement and guidance, either to join the ranks of company owners or to expedite the progress of their careers within other organizations. I am also convinced that this book will be of substantial benefit to other entrepreneurs, male or female, who also need such encouragement and guidance. I urge those who share my high regard for this book to check out the Customer Reviews of the works identified by Ross in the "Recommended Reading" section.

Here are other works which should also be seriously considered: Beemer's Predatory Marketing, Catalyst's Advancing Women in Business, Jennings and Haughton's It's Not the Big That Eat the Small...It Is the Fast That Eat the Slow, Glaser and Smalley's Swim with the Dolphins, Kawasaki's Selling the Dream, Landrum's Profiles of Female Genius, Morgan's Eating the Big Fish, Breaking the Glass Ceiling co-edited by Morrison, White, and Van Elsor, Swiss's Women Breaking Through, Taylor and Archer's Up Against the Wal-Marts, and Wymard's Conversations with Uncommon Women. 5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Book Ever
I have never felt such a connection to an author. This book went through all of my pre-entrepreneurial emotions, right up to the launch of my business. I felt compelled to write Linda Hollander and express my gratitude for her comprehensive look at being a female entrepreneur. After reading her book, I put several of her key ideas into place and I am now on the road to success. I won a couple of key accounts and I am looking forward to many more. Ten out of five stars if possible.

5-0 out of 5 stars She Truly Shares the Wealth - Don't Miss Out!!!!
This is one of the rare books that after reading you come away energized with THINGS TO DO instead of just lofty ideas or more things to think about. If you're already in business or just "thinking" about starting, read what Linda Hollander has to impart with you. This information is priceless!!! I will be re-reading as it's a true map to the treasure that's simply awaiting me to discover by doing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Impressive Bag of Wealth Secrets
WOW! You can't miss when taking the advice of Linda Hollander in her book, Bags to Riches. Linda doesn't skip a beat in the orchestration of starting and growing your business. She explains step-by-step everything you need to do and consider for your business to be a success.

Linda writes as if you're sitting in front of her and having a girl talk, and all the while she provides no nonsense business principles that work. Thank you, Linda, for making this an easy, enjoyable read.

5-0 out of 5 stars The ONLY Business Book you'll ever need...It's all in there!
"Bags To Riches" to the rescue! I took the steps to expand and take my business in new directions (a little scary in today's economy) and with a limited budget but I did it. I didn't have the luxury of doing anything wrong. Any business book will give you the "big things" that you must have in order to start or grow your business but most women (and men for that matter) need the little things that have always fallen through the cracks in other books that really make or break the future of your business. This is the most well rounded business book that I have ever read! Linda made this book not only informative but very enjoyable to read as well. The way that she broke down the success secrets so that they really make sense no matter what level of business you are on is what sets it apart from all the rest. I was very amazed at the things that I didn't realize that were vital to my business success. A lot of simple things that no one bothers to tell you can positively affect the outcome of your business venture. I was extremely impressed and would highly recommend this book to anyone in business.

For people who are about to start their first business (home based or otherwise) they should just stop what they're doing right now, invest in and read this book first! It will not only save them countless hours and money (they don't have to waste) but will give them the positive encouragement to help them find the proper direction, business tools, stay focused and maintain their motivation on their entrepreneurial journey. The book becomes a guide so that you can continue to help yourself at whatever stages of your business that you need help or guidance with. Linda overcame her obstacles and achieved this level of success and has formatted "Bags To Riches" to give entrepreneurs a competitive edge with a smooth roadmap.

I had been waiting for this book and it was well worth the wait -like having a silent partner on my team - cheering me on my road to my success!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read for any budding woman entrepreneur!!
Bags to Riches is written by a woman to help and inspire other women entrepreneurs to realize their dream of starting and growing their own business. This book is full of factual and practical advise that is easy to read as well as being inspirational at the same time. Ms. Hollander certainly helps to encourage other women to get out and pursue their true potential.

This book is based on Ms. Hollander's personal experience in building her own business (along with her partner) from scratch including all the mistakes and pitfalls along the way -to the successful enterprise that it is today. This book is highly motivational and leaves you feeling If she did it, so can I!

Purchasing this book was one of the best investments in myself that I have made recently. It is such a small price to pay for giving me that extra push to go out, get started, and make a successful future for myself.

Thanks Linda for inspiring me to follow in your footsteps. ... Read more

Book Description

In this groundbreaking book, Elizabeth Perle McKenna challenges the outdated system of work for professional women, and encourages readers to re-examine work as their sole identities, and, if they are unhappy, to allow room for their Lives. For every worn-out, emotionally depleted female professional who has ever sighed, "there has got to be a better way," here is the revolutionary book by Elizabeth Perle McKenna--herself a former publishing executive--that explores women's relationship with work.

For decades, women have succeeded at traditional male jobs, but now, deep in the second stage of the feminist movement, they want lives that are integrated and whole. Based on original research and containing hundreds of interviews with prominent working women, this book exposes the inherent conflict between the way work traditionally is structured and rewarded, and what women desire and value in their lives. More important, it suggests new ways for women to identify their values, reclaim their identities, and define success on their own terms.

Most importantly, this is not just another book about working mothers. Liz Perle McKenna deconstructs the myth that women can have it all, and shows that they risk true happiness until they give up that impossible ideal. The author's focus extends to every working woman who will most likely face a life-altering situation at some point in her career and will need to redefine what success means to her. Any woman who has been working for more than a few years will identify strongly with the issues raised here, and will be rewarded by the insights she gleans from this vital book. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars perfect timing
This book came along at the perfect instant in my life...having been stuck and miserable in an abusive health care job situation for months and months, I couldn't figure out why, since I am financially independent, I was still torturing myself going to work in the OR (the ultimate abusive job) This book helped to crystallize my scattered thinking, and I was able to look at the job situation as an abusive relationship and finally get out. Last night I saw a number of my former colleagues atr a baby shower and could honestly say I don't miss it at all and that quitting was the best thing I have ever done for myself. I will also admit to my good fortune in being financially independent and to having had the good sense to begin my second career as a massotherapist several years ago. The identity issues and the "What will I do every day" issues are key. I am passing this book on and on and on to anyone who will read it. The workplace will have to change if enough of us blow it off.

2-0 out of 5 stars This Book Doesn't Really Work Either
As I read this book, it occurred to me that Ms. McKenna seems only to be talking to women like herself who apparently come from upper class, successful families, and who have had great educations and connections to hit the ground running with promising, fast-track jobs. Had she been an immigrant, or someone from a less privileged background, she may have been a little less whiney. I was annoyed with paragraph after paragrph of "we" grew up believing this, and "we" went to school and learned that, and "we" entered the work force and accomplished this. I'm about the same age as McKenna and female, and that sure wasn't my experience. After working my way through college in a paper mill, I finally got a job-- slinging hash! So when I finally landed a job in New York City and started my own meteoric rise, I was probably a little more mercenary. I was in it for the money. PERIOD. I had no illusions about getting satisfaction for my soul with (hello?) corporate life! McKenna just seems naive to me. A poor little rich girl.

At the risk of sounding like a 60s radical, doesn't she know that corporations --and our capitalistic society-- is based on the exploitation of people and other organizations? Of course you're unhappy at the end of the day! My advice: Make as much money as you can, then get out before they steal your soul!

Finally, and one of my biggest issues with this book, is-- Why does she target this book & her ideas toward women? Men can feel the same dissatisfaction that the author does, and would probably like to chuck it all as much as she does. They just don't whine about it as much as McKenna. She does the battle for equality of the sexes a disservice by defining this as a "women's problem" and by moaning that corporate life is only for men with wives who will keep the home fires burning.

5-0 out of 5 stars For those of us who feel like "square pegs in round holes"
Brillant, could not put it down. It solidified all the feelings I had been having about work and a career and wondering which direction I should go (which was not in the same direction as everyone one else!), and made me feel normal again with a great view to my future work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Life Changing
I knew something was wrong - for years I "played the game" in Corporate America, but it was no longer enough. I read McKenna's book one Friday night...there it was in black & white...the validation of all I was feeling. That weekend I mourned the loss of a life that had become all-consuming, and began the journey to build a better life. It took 4 months and much soul searching, but I resigned from my high powered, Fortune 500 company position, and am now well on my way to the life I always dreamed about. I've sent copies of the book to all my stressed-out, "there must be a better way" girlfriends in Corporate America. It's a must read if you've ever wondered "at what price, success?"

4-0 out of 5 stars This Book Set Me Free
I had a baby in early 1997 and have been struggling since then with juggling my high-powered executive level job with my family and my own needs. This book was the catalyst in my life for making a change to a low-pressure, individual contributor job which allows me to flex my hours on a daily basis and doesn't penalize me for wanting a life outside of work. My next step is to go to part time work, which is what will really fit with my goals for my life. I would never have taken the risk of jumping off the fast track if I hadn't read this book ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A must for those in sales: Great for women and for men.
Thank you Nicki Joy for writing this book!!! If you're thinking about getting into sales, this book is a must. It's great for women AND men (and I know, 'cause I'm a guy) because it tells you what you really need to know. I found the writing to be enjoyable and easy to read. It's as informative as a textbook, but it's so much fun it makes you want to read more. I definitely recommend it.
