Very Valuable!!
I wanted to pass on to you some of the great ideas I have
personally been using from this book.
First, I have been actively learning from the women speakers I have come across. Developing my "role models" is important to me at this stage of the game.
Second , as a woman of color, I really appreciated chapter 10. The points that are touch on are so crucial. Establishing your credibility from the start -and keeping it- is so important, not only in speaking engagements but also in life.
For any woman that wants to seen and heard in her life this book is a very valuable tool!!!

Great Book for Young PR Professionals
Both very useful and fun to read, unlike a lot of "How-to" public speaking books. I appreciated the history mixed in, too.
I do public relations for high tech companies so I'm required to be a good communicator, but I often run into huge challenges because of the fact that I work with technologists (who are notoriously bad communicators) and 99% of whom are male and have a tendency to immediately dismiss me as a source of valuable insight because I'm young, attractive, and female. In battling past those first impressions, I've found that effective communication is 20% what you say and 80% how you say it. Although at first blush this seems to be geared only to professional public speaking, the examples in it are really good for everyday interactions as well. A great book!

What you wish your Mother would have told you about success!
Ms. Gustafson book is the pep talk that women wish their Mother's would have given them! She helps us all realize the individuality of our definitions of success and outlines how to realize those goals.

It is an easy weekend read, with great exercises to get you thinking. Would recommend it for women ages 18-88 to help all of them make the most of each stage of their life. Success is yours for the making and taking!

Practical and an Enjoyable Read
Implementing the concepts presented in this book does not take a lot of time and the resulting benefits make the effort very worthwhile. You will also be able to track your progress - this is a great motivator.

A little simplistic...
I did like this book, and I could see reccommending it to clients I counsel. The activities and exercises are great. Her writing style is easy to read and the book is well laid out. She covers pretty much all the important issues with a fair amount of detail and great examples.

So why the relatively low rating? Well, I did find the book oversimplified the problems of unassertiveness. I would've liked an entire chapter just on the role of women in society and how that influences our potential unassertiveness. She just didn't go deeply enough for my liking as to the causes of unassertiveness. For a person with real, long term problems speaking up for themselves this book wouldn't be enough either. I had a real issue with the way the author seemed to suggest that all you had to do was read the book and follow her program and you could become assertive. For many it isn't that easy.

A wonderful guide on assertiveness training for women
Dr. Paulette Dale is a workshop leader and consultant on assertive communication and the author of five textbooks and numerous articles on the subject.

This 196-page book has no index, but it does have a list of references and multiple useful appendices. It covers the following topics: (1) how to be unappealing to users and abusers; (2) using assertive speech and body language; (3) preparing for confrontation; (4) learning how to say no; (5) buying time before responding in a difficult situation; (6) speaking up for yourself and telling someone when their behavior is not acceptable to you; (7) refusing to put up with put downs; (8) speaking up on the job; (9) raising assertive children.

Dr. Dale writes in a clear and friendly style which makes it a pleasant task to learn her lessons on how to communicate what you really feel, say no and mean it, speak up for your rights, get what you need on your terms, become confident and articulate, and gain the respect of others.

Assertiveness is a very important aspect of self-defense (a multi-layered set of skills I strongly believe every woman should know). This book teaches the first two of five levels of self-defense: establish a strong physical presence, and verbal deterrence. (The other levels are: soft-handed defense, deterrence through physical pain which causes no lasting harm; hard-handed defense, physical strikes which can cause injury but rarely death; and deadly force, physical kicks or blows, or the use of weapons such as guns, which can kill the assailant, and are commonly employed by martial artists, law enforcement officers, and military personnel.)

I highly recommend this book to women of all ages, especially young women, who can avoid a lifetime of unnecessary suffering by using this vital information to keep themselves safe and sane.

Excellent book for women on speaking up for themselves
I would recommend this book to anyone working on increasing their assertiveness skills. Her chapter on saying No - using ways to buy time and saying no directly are particularly great examples of skill building. I refer my coaching clients to this book and mention her examples in my newsletters and on my web page.

A great reference guide that can be used over and over again
I started to use the techniques described in the book straightaway. I have managed to be in control of situations that normally I would have blamed myself for, my confidence and self esteem rises everyday. Thank you

Dr.Dale has written a much needed book. I'm a fairly assertive and confident person, but this book made me realize that I could still be much more effective when communicating with others. The "big boys" learned long ago how to create networks and gain visibility through "personal publicity," aka "toot your own horn!" Women generally show far too much humility about their talents and skills. I Want My Money Back
I just read 3 home-based business books and found value in two of them. This one was the exception. Anyone who doesn't already possess the common-sense presented in this book would have trouble succeeding in any home-based venture. I guarantee you the author has never succeeded at a home based business. Do not waste your money on this book.

Read this if you think abt start'g business
I reviewed over 12 business books and picked this one! I think women/Mother have different sets of motivations, concerns, and dilemmas than men. This book really talks about the approach that are much more familiar or relating to me as women/mother. There are a lot of good business books are out there, but this book helped me to focus and to make decisions, becuase it addresses my questions in a much more personal ways than other books did. The writer also list various people's answers which can be pros or cons of certain aspect of starting business. It gives you a good understanding of how it's like to run business while you are taking a role of a super mom or wife!

An Intimate Approach
Picture a focus group. You're on the other side of a two way mirror, listening to successful bootstrapping businesswomen share their stories. This is as much a collection of biographies as it is a How To Start and Run a Business book. Much can be gained from this more intimate approach: It's the real world, applied.

Being a small business owner who has worked out of the home for 3
+ years, I found this book to be very helpful in content and readability. The author asks questions of women business owners and the answers are frank and very informative. It is refreshing to get insight into other womens lives and the demands of their particular business/family arrangements. I felt the author shared alot of useful websites and references to help woman business owners, or women considering their own business opportunities. What my daughter will know before the "I DO."
Wow! A wonderfully bibliographed text which will assist any thesis, essay, term paper or legal presentation on the subject of women's unpaid service and poverty. This poignant, exceptionally well-written and throughly documented book is a must for many audiences:1) anyone who is preparing for divorce (despite what the income or attorney promises,2) children of divorce who want to know why the once vibrant mom can't seem to get back on top financially,3) for anyone with disabled children, 4) for any men who view women and children as people, and for any legislator/senator or policy maker/agency manager who still has a conscious, some backbone and believes that when good men are silent wickedness prospers.4) This is must reading for students of sociology, psychology, women's studies, government and policy. We are in 2001 yet millions of our own women and children are living in conditions similar to those of poverty in Charles Dicken's time. This tragic, hidden, American secret is silenced with the anti-welfare propaganda. There are many women and children who fall from prosperity to poverty despite all attempts to "pull up their bootstraps, keep their nose clean," and frugal living. For me this was a book which validated the nightmare I've lived falling from apx $300,000 annually to homelessness-even thoughy the court ordered the Doctor otherwise. Living In Living Out
This book is a wonderful account of how African-American women made it at the turn of the century. I enjoyed reading how these women made a difference in the lives of the people and children in their families. This book showed me just how strong Black women are. It allowed me to see that they had the strength to go on and face any adversary that came into their lives. Any woman or person facing obstacles in their lives can pick up this book and know that they can makeit. That's what this book did for me. I know that there is nothing that I can't do. Lauderdale Graham traces the intricate and ambivalent relations that existed between masters and servants. She shows how for servants the house could be a place of protection--as well as oppression--while the street could be dangerous--but also more autonomous. She integrates her discoveries with larger events taking place in Rio de Janeiro during the period, including the epidemics of the 1850s, the abolition of slavery, the demolition of slums, and major improvements in sanitation during the first decade of the 1900s. some interesting if not earth-shattering observations
Though I didn't feel that there was any shocking bit of new information, I did enjoy reading the candid comments of many CEO's regarding their perceptions of women.No surprise that many are intimidated by the very smart women that have risen to their level.I did feel that at times the differences between men and women were exaggerated somewhat, but the author does provide helpful pointers at the end of each chapter that are meant to help the reader put theory into practice.Most interesting is the idea that many top CEOs cite graciousness at the top quality they think makes them a strong leader -- I think men have learned something from women here as women are more likely than men to share the credit.Humility and graciousness go a long way, both in the business world and out.A good read with some useful information.

Gender-Specific and Yet....
Throughout eight chapters, Swiss suggests how women can "add swagger to their step, put on a game face, balance feminine and masculine traits, maneuver adversity and adversaries, cope with mixed signals and the great gender divide." She also offers reasons men why like working with women, secrets of strong leaders, and concludes with suggestions as to how to open "the gender lens. "Here is a woman's guide to working with men. (It could also serve as a man's guide to working with other men as well as with women.) Based on extensive interviews, Swiss offers some insightful comments and practical suggestions which, in this male's opinion, will help women to improve (or at least clarify) their relationships with men. Of course, not all men think and act alike; nor do all women. We all know abrasive and aggressive women as well as gentle and acquiescent men. Each possesses a unique combination of what are perceived to be masculine and feminine traits. Men and women often approach quite differently a broad range of career issues such as hiring and firing, conveying confidence, facing competition, participating on a team, building business alliances, saying "no" and setting limits, dealing with difficult people and difficult situations, managing and motivating others. Sound familiar? I agree with Swiss that there are certain "valuable truths about the male psyche" which, properly understood, can reduce (if not eliminate) problems many women have with that psyche in action. (Many males do not as yet understand, much less appreciate these "valuable truths.") This book will be valuable for anyone who seeks a better understanding of the male mentality, not only at work but everywhere else.

I really loved this book.
This book is incisive and helpful. As a woman in a male dominated field, I can attest that Swiss' advice is entirely on target. In addition to offering effective ways to succeed, it's also a good read. Very entertaining. If you are a women who wants to work more effectively with male colleagues--read this book.

A wonderful reference for corporate women!
This book is a wonderful reference for women who work with men, especially those in the corporate world.I work in corporate finance for a large,international corporation and there are very few women in my world. Reading this book gave me a great deal of insight on how men see worksituations differently than women, and, by putting this knowledge to work,I've already improved several relationships.(By the way, I first readthis book in a bookstore - spent the afternoon sipping lattes and reading -and am now buying my copy from Amazon.) ...
