"Sky, earth, / cloud, and rain, / show your face / to me again. / Halo nods, / wing unbends, / I see angels / without end." Ann Turner finds angels in the strangest places--in sunflowers, in milkweed fluff, in ponds, in clouds, and in the curve of a butterfly wing. In this boldly colorful, richly textured picture book, she--along with artist Lois Ehlert, creator of the Caldecott Honor winner Color Zoo--plays hide and seek with the winged celestials. In her poem "Sea Angel," an angel is built out of shells and seaweed: "We went treasure hunting / by the shore / and made a picture / on the sand / a horseshoe crab / for the head, / a scatter of shells for wings, / and a hank of green weed / for the sea angel's hair." Ehlert's painted paper collages are a pleasure to behold, even if you can't find the angel in the picture--which is likely. Artist's notes in the back offer background material on sunflowers, monarch butterflies, milkweed, and other wonders of the natural world. (Ages 5 and older) --Karin Snelson ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful use of Lois Ehlert's talents
This is a great book for both kids and adults. Ehlert is known as a children's book illustrator, and this title takes her talents to the next level. The illustrations contain cleverly designed angels which the reader must find. They range in difficulty from VERY easy and obvious to VERY difficult. There are some that I still can't find! The illustrations are good enough to frame. Ehlert arranges everyday items (or "finds" the arrangement in nature) to resemble an angel. Each one is unique. After going through the book and finding the angels, it is possible to enhance the experience with a child by going back and creating stories for each one. Each page also contains a few lines by Turner which aid in finding the angel. However, the written lines are not as good as the pictures. The words just don't flow. That is the only reason this book has 4 rather than 5 stars. The book reminds me of the _I SPY_ series, or _Where's Waldo?_. In addition to being entertaining, this book stimulates the brain. There is a short section in the back with a few informational lines about each picture, but you can't use them to cheat; they don't give away the hiding spots. I thoroughly enjoyed it and will be giving away several as gifts this holiday season. ... Read more

From the supplier: Canada continues to be a rich source of outstanding books for children. Two recent works deserve special mention for the way in which they extend the traditions of children's literature: Jo Cugnet's 'A Prairie Alphabet' and G.K. Johnson's 'Saranohair.'

5-0 out of 5 stars Mysterious stories that really gets you thinking
I think that this book is simply one of the best books that I've ever read. When I first started reading it I thought the stories were totally "weird". But when I got to the story about "Mr. Potato Head" my thought changed into "unusual". Which is good. I mean, I think reading normal plots and stories and just really boring. This book really got me thinking. For readers who likes unusual surprises, here's a perfect book!

3-0 out of 5 stars I thought the book was okay, but it was not my best read.
I was intrigued by some of the stories in this book; many had some either very twisted endings or did not really end. Many of the stories, however, flew right over my head, and were not very clear to me as far as the plot of the story. I would possibly recommend this book to anyone who likes stories that don't have traditional endings or usual plots. I would also say that if you frequently have trouble understanding plots, this book may not be for you. I don't think this book was really for me. ... Read more

Book Description

Winner of the Sheila A. Egoff Children's Book Prize in Canada, The Baby Project tells the poignant story of a family forced to make hard adjustments. Jessica and her brother Simon are somewhat shocked when their high-powered engineer mother announces she is pregnant. While Simon is off in his own teenage world of sports and music, 11-year-old Jessica is more focused on home, the punk tenant in the basement, and her best friend Margaret. She and her stay-at-home dad share excitement in anticipating the new baby, and when Lucie arrives it is the happiest time in Jessica's life. But soon the entire household is turned upside down by the tragedy of the baby's sudden death. First published in hardcover as The Family Project, this realistic story, by turns funny and sad, tender and moving, is a powerful and sensitive look at a child coming to terms with death and grief. The Baby Project will long remain in the memory of young readers. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but not great
I read the book, The Baby Project by Sarah Ellis a little while ago. This book was pretty good, the plot was unoriginal but still enjoyable to read. The author did a wonderful job explaining the characters. Basically this book is about a young girl and her family, a baby enters the family, things change..death haunts the family and is never the same. I do recommend this book if you like happy, short little novels. However, I really enjoyed Out of the Blue by Sarah Ellis, I suggest you read that novel. ... Read more

Book Description

Thirteen-year-old Polly loves life -- with her single-parent mom (a stained-glass artist), her quirky best friend Vanessa (who has a crush on their English teacher), and her endearing neighbor Ernie Protheroe (who collects postal codes and TV theme songs). But when the house they live in is sold, Polly's perfect life seems to vanish overnight. Her mom doesn't have much luck finding them an affordable place to live. And Polly is beginning to think that having a father -- and a conventional lifestyle -- wouldn't be such a bad idea. As an interim solution, Polly goes to stay with her affluent relatives. But Uncle Roger turns out to be crass and chilly, his wife is self-indulgent, and their daughter, Polly's teenage cousin, is on a shoplifting spree. With humor and compassion, Sarah Ellis portrays adolescent enlightenment, as Polly discovers that like the child's game of pick-up sticks, each part of life touches every other and cannot be disturbed without affecting the whole. ...
