This translation of How the Grinch Stole Christmas loses none of the rhythm and fun of the English version. Spanish-speaking kids (and English-speaking kids who are learning Spanish) need more Dr. Suess books translated.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Big Fun!
If you've ever been to a slumber party you've probably heard someone tell this spooky-fun tale. Illustrator Paul Galdone gives the royal treatment to this classic story of a teeny-tiny woman out on a teeny-tiny walk who finds herself a teeny-tiny bone and thinks of making a teeny-tiny pot of soup for herself. Humour and suspense in generous amounts follow the events that spiral out from her one simple act of bringing the bone home. The silly surprise ending is classic slumber-party fare...eek! This is a good story for around Halloween time due to its bedtime suspense and ghostly plot. Be sure to share this one with a new generation of kids. It's sure to be loved.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great ghost story!
My son absolutely loves this story. He enjoys the fact that he can follow the words with the audio narrator and at the same time get spooky feelings about the Teeny-Tiny Woman! I am so glad we found this book - it is very unique and keeps his attention - no matter how many times he reads it. Definetly a keeper for our library! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The Lemonade Trick by Scott Corbett
You might not have heard about a lemonade trick and magic mix,but in this book you will.Kerby Maxwell isn't a neat person but he's not as bad as he seems. Also you migth think this book is boring but when youre in an exciting part you'll like to read more and more and more about the story. This kid meets this old woman and she, gave him a chemistry set,but when he mixes it and gets near,oh no.....

I liked this book because it's interesting and emotional. The author gives examples so you would understand perfectly. Also because I didn't know some of the words and now I do and you'll learn new words too.He also describes how Kerby is feeling and everybody else too.I haven' read a book as interesting and remarkable as this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Worth mixing up a batch
Ah yes, those were much simpler times, when you could write a book that involved making magic potions with a chemistry set and drinking them or placing them in a lemonade vat... and not worry about getting sued. I'm curious - does the book come with a warning now? Or has the story been edited to reflect safer lab practices? Of course, to this end, few chemistry sets include anything that'll kill you anymore, either (justifiably so, I guess).

All cynical humor aside, this is a terrific children's book. The rest of the series is well worth tracking down, also.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful series
Oh happy day! For years I've been trying to remember enough about these books to track them down, and now a search engine has done it for me. I read this series of "Trick" books probably in their first printing and adored them. Now that I have children of my own, I've been trying to figure out how to describe them to a librarian in order to track them down. Now with a few clicks, here they are! I only hope they all come out in an affordable format soon. Kerby may not be the original Harry Potter, but I can't wait to re-read all of these. Yippee!

2-0 out of 5 stars Its really fun to read.
Its wellwritten and funny.my favorite part of the book was when kerby got his chemistry set. Also when kerby hit bumpson the head with his sword.Kerby bent bump hat.

5-0 out of 5 stars The book was really funny

5-0 out of 5 stars A splendidly written and illustrated story
This is a gorgeous book, from the author of the Julie books (JULIE OF THE WOLVES, JULIE, JULIE'S WOLF PACK, and NUTIK, THE WOLF PUP). Jean Craighead George, writer of more than eighty books for children, naturalist, and expert on Eskimo culture and the Inupiaq language, does an excellent job with this recent addition to her works. Not to mention the illustrations by Wendell Minor, who has illustrated more of Ms. George's books. They're wonderously beautiful watercolors, filled with expression that highlight Ms. George's words equally fine words. The story is that of Ms. George's grandson, Luke, who lives in Barrow, Alaska, near the top of the world. Though his parents, Craig and Cyd, are from the lower forty-eight, Luke knows a lot about the Eskimo culture around him, gathering knowledge over the years from an Inupiat friend of the Georges. Luke is referred to as Kupaaq, the native language name that the friend gave to him when he was born. The beautiful Inupiaq language is seen many times through the course of the book, as are details of the culture and the tundra life surrounding Barrow. This is an excellent choice for a cold winter's night by the fire, for children to learn about others like them, who may live thousands of miles away. ... Read more

Just suppose," said Ted "Dr. Seuss" Geisel, "there was a little kid who didn't speak words but only weird sounds?" Thus Gerald McBoing Boing was born, brought to life by a studio called United Productions of America as an animated cartoon. This delightful, rhyming story went on to win an Academy Award in 1951, and was briefly made available as a book at the time of the movie's release. And now it's back in hardcover and, here, as an interactive board book that produces a delightful boing-ing sound when you press the button on the right-hand top corner of the book. When Gerald McCloy turns two, he doesn't start talking like most children--he says "Boing boing!" instead. His George Jetson-style father, turning gray, rushes to call Doctor Malone, who decrees there is no cure. In time, Gerald only increases in volume, shouting "Boom!" like a big keg of exploding powder. School is no help, either. He cuckoos and honks in the classroom, "And as little Gerald/ grew older, he found/ When a fellow goes BAM!/ no one wants him around."Outcast, forlorn, he runs away from home. But just as he is about to board a slow-moving freight, the owner of the BONG-BONG-BONG radio station accosts him by the tracks. "I need a smart fellow/ to make all the sounds,/ Who can bark like a dog/ and bay like the hounds!/ You're GONG is terrific,/ your toot is inspired!/ Quick come to BONG-BONG-BONG,/ McBoing Boing--you're hired!"This fun and funny picture book--soaked in muted Fiestaware colors--lilts and bounces and boings like a good read-aloud should. Children will discover that sometimes it's our quirks that end up making us special. (Ages 3 and older) --Karin Snelson ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A FABULOUS story encouraging verbal expression.
I'm an elementary speech-language specialist and I use this book every year. I am picky in the books I choose to use in therapy, but this story allows for critical thinking, retelling, inferring, predicting..all the things that look for in interactive literature. Kids root for the turtle and love the "villian" characteristics in the monkey! Highly recommended. I have so much fun reading it that my kids can't help but catch the excitement! 4-0 out of 5 stars A straighforward telling of the tale
This book passed the toughest test our household has to offer---my two sons asked for it to be read several times in one day. The pictures are vivid and clear and the story is told without fancy added details---just the facts of the fairy tale! I must admit I didn't find it that overly gripping, but I think that's because this isn't the most fascinating of fairy tales---but something about it appeals to kids---the bears? The 3 sizes of everything? Who knows? Whatever it is, it's a hit with my boys!

4-0 out of 5 stars My 2.5 yr-old loves this traditional story.
I find Paul Galdone's illustrations a bit garish but my son clearly prefers this style over more subtle ones - like Margot Zemach or Jan Brett. I had to really look for a traditional version with the emphasis on the extremes, too hot, too cold, just right - so many modern versions drop this original prose. This had exactly what I was looking for. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Explores sibling jealousy in a unique way
Here's a book about the first day of school that doesn't have the main character dreading her first day of school. On the contrary, Sarah is excited at the thought of making new friends.

But not everyone in the household is as happy for Sarah. In fact, Ralph, Sarah's rotten red cat, is doing everything he can to sabotage her school day: he sets back her clock, draws all over her new school dress and tries to trick her into staying home by faking an illness.

When Ralph gets the bright idea to follow Sarah to school, his antics get her in trouble and keep her from making new friends. Fans of Rotten Ralph--this is the ninth book in the series--know that all's well that ends well, but first-time readers may be a bit put off by Ralph, who seems just a tad too mean.

Rubel's chunky illustrations are colorful and bold. Her rendering of Ralph captures his true spirit right on the money...he's bright red with pointy ears and a devilish grin.

Gantos' book would be a good way to explore the jealousy that younger siblings might feel when an older brother or sister gets to try a new and exciting experience that they don't. Younger children might not recognize themselves in Rotten Ralph and his outrageous tactics, but I'm betting that parents will. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A dramatic look into an otherworldly environment
Naturalist Jean Craighead George introduces us to the world of the mountain lion, the road runner, the cactus, the kangaroo rat, the ringtailed cat, the swift fox, the elf owl, the coyote, and the bombadier beetle in this book as she did wolves and caribou in JULIE OF THE WOLVES and peregrine falcons in MY SIDE OF THE MOUNTAIN. A young Papago Indian girl named Bird Wing and her mother live in Arizona's Sonoran Desert. This usually arid place is about to fall victim to a terrible thunderstorm and a flash flood. Bird Wing and all the animals of the desert struggle to find shelter before the flood. Some will survive--and some will not. This is a beautiful story about the close connection between human beings and all living things, and the unpredictable ways of nature. Other books in the ONE DAY series that include exciting natural disasters are ONE DAY IN THE ALPINE TUNDRA and ONE DAY IN THE PRAIRIE. There is also the fascinating ONE DAY IN THE WOODS and ONE DAY IN THE TROPICAL RAIN FOREST. And don't forget Jean Craighead George's 80+ stories about nature, like The Thirteen Moons series and THERE'S AN OWL IN THE SHOWER.

5-0 out of 5 stars Introducing young readers to the desert world
Yet another wonderful book by an author very much in tune with nature and ecological concerns. She teaches while she entertains. Having lived in the region portrayed in this book, it became a gift to young friends back in Minnesota to introduce them to a COMPLETELY different world. Yielded fun discussion and comparison. They wondered at and enjoyed it very much!

4-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Springtime Stories from JULIE OF THE WOLVES author
Continuing the four-part series that began with AUTUMN MOON and WINTER MOON, Newbery Medalist Jean Craighead George writes vivid accounts of North American wildlife as their lives revolve around the seasonal changes of the moon. Originally published in the 1960s, and later reprinted with a new design and illustrations in the early 90's, the THIRTEEN MOONS were not widely read, perhaps because they were in hardcover. Now, with the early 90's versions compressed into paperback books, maybe the books will draw more attention, from school groups learning about nature to the most avid reader. The series title has changed from THIRTEEN MOONS to SEASONS OF THE MOON, and each book contains three stories, with colorful illustrations for reference. SPRING MOON features a spotted salamander who, under the moon of March, is making his way from under rock crevices across the damp forest floor to a pond where he will perform an ancestral mating dance. This gives readers a unique look into a world rarely described; the hidden life of an amphibian that has been around for 330 million years. Next, comes a cheery story quite the opposite of the salamander's dark drama. In Montana, a mother chickaree--a small red squirrel--is busy raising a brood of helpless youngsters while trying to defend her property from some hungry intruders--a magpie, a pack rat, a woodpecker. The chickaree's screaming indignance is amusing, and it's fascinating to learn about the area of the mountainous Bitterroot River where she makes her home. The last story is filled with tranquility and beauty as we learn about a monarch butterfly who is making the thousand-mile migration from her wintering area in Mexico all the way to Canada. It's easy to imagine the graceful, fluttering movements of the butterfly as she crosses rivers, towns, and fields, performing her ultimate task, to lay eggs and pass on the legacy of the monarch. I highly recommend this stunning book to anyone who enjoys studying the mammals, insects, and amphibians of America, and also to read the other books in the SEASONS OF THE MOON series. Also, check out Chris Kubie's instrumental CD MUSIC OF THE THIRTEEN MOONS, which wonderfully captures the grace of Ms. George's words and the feeling of the animal life she describes. ... Read more
