3-0 out of 5 stars A bit confusing for a preschooler...
Today, tomorrow, yesterday? We found this book a bit confusing for a 3 year old. Kipper is a favourite of ours, but this one was just "ok".

4-0 out of 5 stars Another Cute Kipper Book
Like the other Kipper books this one is easy to read and the illustrations are great. It's a bit "busier" than some of the authors earlier works and lacks the simplicity of the earliest stories. I've also found a companion sticker style activity book which is nice but the stickers are not movable from page to page.

4-0 out of 5 stars Kipper gets mixed up!
I got this book for my son in preparation for his second birthday and he loves it! I't teaches children (and parents) about the importance of being organized, but it also teaches the importance of friends. I love the illustrations and most of the language. My one criticism of the book is that one part is particularly confusing for kids (when Kipper himself is confused about his birthday, so I guess that's appropriate). ... Read more

My children love this new book by Ms. Isadora. I am a teacher and look for books where Afro-American children and situations are portrayed in a favorable light and with respect. I foound that this book not only doesjustice to a part of the world I come from, but gives children here in theUS a realistic and wholesome look at life in the Islands. We all loved theillustrations and the simple text, which actually got our minds thinkingand exploring the meanings behind each picture. 4-0 out of 5 stars Which Witch
This novel was had a very unique plotline and interesting characters. It is a fantasy about one great wizard named Arriman the Awful who has decided he wants to marry a witch, so he hosts a tournament to find his new wife. The witches that live in Todcaster all are interested in the competition, so they prepare themselves for the day when they will perform the blackest (the most powerful and wicked) magic they can in order to prove themselves worthy of Arriman. The witches that compete are all black witches that do dark spells, except for one girl named Belladonna. She is a white witch, so she only performs pleasant spells. But she is in love with Arriman, so she decides to try the hardest she can to summon up the blackest piece of magic possible. In the end, she beats some tough competition and discovers that she has an inner darkness that had never shown before.
This 231- page book (paperback), written in 1979, was definitely worth reading. I would say that the characters were the most attention-grabbing aspect of the story. Each had a unique description and personality (I think that it would be a great play). Every one of the witches from the coven of Todcaster had a different background, such as Mabel Wrack, whose mother was a mermaid and father was a human, and who was always complaining about her dry scaly legs and carried around an octopus. The plot structure was pretty good, and it was easy to follow because the events didn't jump around. It was the kind of book that I didn't have to go back and read because I was confused.
I would recommend this book to anybody who enjoys fantasy. On the cover of the book, it encourages you to read it if you love the Harry Potter series. Unlike Harry Potter, it is a bit slow and boring in the beginning, but it is very suspenseful and detailed towards the end.
My favorite part in the book is when Belladonna finally performs her black magic in front of the judges and Arriman. This event was a bit predictable, but afterwards, when everything is explained, we find out facts that were definitely not foreseeable at all!
The author's writing was very descriptive and visual. It was not hard to picture what each object or person looked like. Eva Ibbotson used so much imagination to write this story. It would be a shame not to read it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible! Fantastic! One You've gotta read!
Which Witch is a spectacular book written by Eva Ibbotson. Anyone who has not read this or the other two she has written (ISLAND OF THE AUNTS and THE SECRET OF PLATFORM 13) has missed out on very good books. I would recommend this book to readers aged 8-88+. The three are great in whichever order you read them.
WHICH WITCH is about a young boy who is a wizard. He is a black (does things that are not good) and the blackest wizard in the world. His name was George but after his parents found out he was a wizard they changed it to Arriman, after a famous and very wicked sorcerer... Arriman has a servant named Lester who is an ogre and a secretary named Mr. Leadbetter... One day Lester tells Arriman that he needs a wife so that he and his wife can have a baby wizard and he can take his place when he dies... He holds a contest among all of the witches in the nearest town by having them perform magic for him and three other judges. Who will win? Who is this mysterious witch? Read the book to find out!

5-0 out of 5 stars How Sad... GREAT BOOK!
this was a GREAT book. i loved it, i have read it twice, and i was so sad when i finished it because it was just so good i didnt want to finish it yet i couldnt put it down. i wish there was a sequal...

4-0 out of 5 stars Read This!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!*********
Deciding that he must marry to carry on his tradition of being the most evil wizard in the world. The great wizard Arriman the Awful announces a contest to be held in his town, Todcaster, to find the witch who can do the blackest magic. Seven witches enter. One witch wants desperately to marry Arriman, but there is one problem, she is a white witch. Every time she tries to perform black magic it turns into a flower, singing birds, or something good. During the competition the first four witches do horribly. One even ends up throwing a witch into a bottomless whole! The new witch in town goes second to last and receives a nine out of ten for her disgusting performance. So Belladonna (the white witch) meets a boy at an orphanage. She goes near the boy and his pet worm and makes the head of the orphanage stick to the ground! She finds out that whenever she is around this boy she can do black magic! Belladonna decides to take him with her and finally decides to do the blackest magic a wizard or witch can do, raising a dead person. When Terence (the little boy) finds out he does something great! Will Belladonna marry Arriman? Read this book to find out.

In this book the theme is magic, good and bad. The conflict in this book is black witches against white witches or good versus bad. I would rate this book four stars because sometimes it was gross and bizarre, like when one witch preformed an act with rat cannibals. Some people though may want to read a book like this but I definitely would not. Lastly, Arriman becomes a nice wizard because he doesn't care that the witch that wins sometimes can't be black without a certain tool. Overall I liked this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Awsome book
The book Which Witch was written in 1979. It is an awesome book. This book is funny, scary and sad all at the same time. It is about a boy and his name is George. Except his parents named him Arriman once they found out he was a wizard. When he was old enough he moved out and got a place of his own on the other side of town. Now he is called Arriman that great wizard of the north.
One day Lester (Arriman's secretary) told Arriman that he should go and see a gypsy that he once knew so he did. The gypsy told him that he must find a wife so that they can have a child and he can rule after Arriman dies. So he holds a completion to find the blackest wife. Blackest means that you are a bad witch but in a good way or that you do black magic.
There are 7 witches that joined the completion. One of them stands out from them all her name is Belladonna. She has blond hair, blue eyes and all of the animals hang out with her. Only she is a white witch who was supposed to be a black one. A white witch is a good witch. Belladonna really wants to marry Arriman and she will do anything to get him. Who will win? Read it and find out?
I really liked the book. Which Witch has a great plot and is easy to read. I would recommend that people 9 and up read it. It made me have many different emotions. I liked how I could not put the book down until I finished it. Which Witch is not like any other book that I have read. Since it is not boring and it keeps you up all night reading it trying to find out what happens next. It was suspenseful. It could make you want to read the last two chapters just to find out what happened even if you were not done with the book.
Some things I did not like about the book Which Witch was that it had some things that I could not understand even though it was easy to read. Which Witch also had some things that were in the book did not have to be in there and did not go with the rest of the story. But overall it was a great book and I would read it over and over if I had to.
Geraldine Brooks is a great writer and I believe that you should read the other books she has written, which are (Island of the Ants and The secrets of platform 13.) This 231 PG book is one that you must read. If not then you are missing out on a very good book. You may or may not like this book but I am pretty sure that you will. Read this book Which Witch and you will know what I am talking about. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wibbly Pig is Wonderful!
This book tells a very simple story about Wibbly Pig. Wibbly pig happily builds a sand castle then eats an ice cream. He is surprised by a wave and loses his ice cream. This leads Wibbly to be upset, but he is soon cheered up by a dog and is happy once more! The text is very basic (i.e. "Wibbly Pig is busy"). However, this book promotes conversation between parent and child because the parent can discuss what is happening in the picture. The illustrations are sweet and Wibbly is adorable! This board book is larger than most which make it easy for little hands to explore. I think this book is probably best for infants up to 3 years. This book is fun to read and my baby loves it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wibbly Piggly
This was the first book to really catch my active toddler's attention. I don't know if it was the cute, colorful drawings of Wibbly Pig or the inclusion of a dog in the story or Wibbly playing in the sand. My son will sit still on my lap long enough to let me read it, the only draw back- pronouncing "Wibbly Pig". The other Wibbly books are just as cute. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for Aspiring Dancers of All Ages
Author illustrator Rachel Isadora's Ballet ABC book is as magically elegant as the dance itself. Each letter introduces a ballet term. Each drawing illuminates the term in graceful pastels. Isadora once studied at the School of Ballet and danced with the Boston Ballet. Her passion for the dance lives on in her books. Don't miss the glossary after letter Z for Zipper: it helps the reader pronounce unfamiliar phrases and elaborates on word origins. For example, P for Pas de chat (pah duh SHAH) is a French phrase meaning "step of the cat." T for Tutu, a costume made of several layers of tulle, was originally an underskirt worn under heavier fabric. My preschool daughter adores this book, along with Ballerina! by Peter Sis. On Your Toes will surely win applause from your own aspiring dancer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Book!
This is a beautiful book! The illustrations are just gorgeous! I was concerned that it wasn't going to be muticultural but it was! The pics are too cute and the alphabet goes through smoothly and when they get to letters like Q, X and Z they clevery have appropriate words. Appropriate "reader friendly" type sizes have been chosen for each title--offering clear, accurate, and readable text. All editions are complete and unabridged, and feature Introductions and Afterwords.

This edition of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow includes an Introduction and Afterword by Charles L. Grant.

Sleepy Hollow is a strange little place...some say bewitched. Some talk of its haunted valleys and streams, the ghostly woman in white, eerie midnight shrieks and howls, but most of all they talk of the Headless Horseman. A huge, shadowy soldier who rides headless through the night, terrifying unlucky travellers.

Schoolteacher Ichabod Crane is fascinated by these stories....Until late one night, walking home through Wiley's swamp, he finds that maybe they're not just stories.

What is that dark, menacing figure riding behind him on a horse? And what does it have in its hands?

And why wasn't schoolteacher Crane ever seen in Sleepy Hollow again?

5-0 out of 5 stars Legend of Sleepy Hollow (Super Adventures of Wishbone)
The reason I gave this book 5 stars is because this story has lots of adventure and excitement. My favorite part in this story was when wishbone would go and tell the story when his owner was not there to say something. The real reason I liked the part were wishbone told the story because he would make the story so much more interesting then when the other charactors in the story would tell it from thier point of view. The part in the story that I did not really care for was when wishbone would talk about something really boaring instead of the story he was living.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Good Book!
This book is scary, classical, fun, and one of the best books. It's anything you would want. This book is the best!!!

Joe, Wishbone, Samantha, and David go on a scavenger hunt to win a $100 gift certificate for Oakdale sports and games.

This reminds Wishbone of the Classic tale, The Legend Of Sleepy Hollow by: Washington Irving. Then Wishbone imagines himself as Ichabod Crane, a superstitious person in the story.

Characters:

Joe Talbot
David Barnes
Samantha Kepler
Wanda Gilmore
Ellen Talbot
The Owner Of Oakdale sports and games.
Damont Jones

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent story
this story is very exciting.I'm glad that Crane disappeared at the end, whatever his destiny is.The Sleepy Hollow is so secluded and beautiful that we don't allow anyone to spoil the beauty there.I view Crane as an intruder of the Tarry town.People there take story-telling,especially the horrable storys, as a pastime. This brings then some excitment.I myself brought up in the rural area, I can understand this.

3-0 out of 5 stars the description is marvellous
Actually, I personlly think the story is not as attracting as I have imagined before reading. But what kept me continuing reading from the cover to the end? Curosity! The vivid and animated description often made me laugh, and I seemed to see the scene that is just before my eyes! The author`s precise and elaborate description and his master composing technic is what we can learn from. Though the story is told in the third person, but as if we are told by an intimate friend. I love this story, and also the charming place!

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic, but...
While The Legend of Sleepy Hollow is a timeless tale that has endured the ages and countless retellings from Disney to Tim Burton, the original work contains a rather large error in tone - a blatant one. The story is told in third person as though it's a journal - the sketch book of Diedrich Knickerbocker, in fact. This is fine, except for the climax scene in which Ichabod journeys home through the hollow from Van Tassel's house, and is confronted by the Headless Horseman. This scene is written with all the detailed minutia that characterizes Irving's style, but the obvious problem is that, of course, nobody was there to witness what happened to Ichabod Crane while he was alone in the wilderness, so therefore it could not possibly be communicated by means of somebody's journal - this person would never have known what actually happened in the Hollow since nobody was there to witness it, and apparently Ichabod never survived or stuck around to tell anyone. Irving never deals with this obvious problem in the text (a simple "This is what we think happened..." would've sufficed). The story probably would've worked much better with a traditional "God-perspective" narrator rather than a fictional character's journal. It is nonetheless, a classic work of American literature and should be read by everyone.

This is a fine edition and also includes Rip Van Winkle, another story of paranormal experience and also of the Knickerbocker sketch book. It's a similar tone to Sleepy Hollow, but the characters aren't as memorable. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Just OK
As a reading teacher for 11 years I found this book to be cute but just OK overall. The writing is weak and the touch and feel aspect is just average. I bought this book for my daughter at age 1, and she thought it was OK. It never became one she requested. She is crazy about dogs but even that aspect couldn't save this book's weak story line. She prefers other touch and feel books we have as well.

4-0 out of 5 stars Former ballerina Isadora tells the story of the "Firebird"
Igor Stravinsky's appeal for audiences is based mainly on his three ballets: "The Firebird," "Petrushka," and "The Rite of Spring." All three ballets were composed and premiered before World War I, which is important to note because after the war Stavinksy and many of his contemporaries believed music had to change in the new world that emerged. In other words, Romanticism seemed irrelevant in light of the Great War and these ballets represent, if anything, the triumph of the Romantic aesthetic. Stravinsky essentially repudiated his works, but they remain popular and "The Firebird," which most reflects the musical sensibilities of the 19th century, is the one that still captures the imagination the most.

Beyond the music, the story is also one of the more interesting in classical ballet, which is what leads us to this book, which is adapted and illustrated by former ballerina Rachel Isadora. The story of the Firebird comes from a variety of Russian fairy tales and brings together not only the Romantic interest in the supernatural but also a sense of nationalism that is often inherent in Russian music of this period. For Stravinsky the goal was to come up with a way of representing for the audience the swirling and soaring brilliance of the Firebird in musical form. For Isadora the task is easier, because she has a myriad collection of dazzling colors to create her impression.

Isadora's version is inspired by the famous choreographer George Balanchine's version of the ballet, so anyone picking up "Firebird" expecting the original folk tale will be somewhat disappointed. But fans of the ballet should be enchanted. We follow as Prince Ivan first discovers the Firebird in an enchanted forest and she gives him a brilliant red feather from her tell that he can use to call her in a time of need. The Prince then meets ten beautiful princesses and falls into the hand of the evil sorcerer, Katschei, who wants to capture them all. In the end, it is the Firebird who helps Prince Ivan in his hour of need and helps him to end the evil reign of Katschei forever.

Isadora tells the story as a ballet, with the brightly colored figures dancing across the pages of this book. Her artwork becomes more impressionistic as we get deeper into the story, which follows the structure of the ballet quite clearly. Young readers, especially if they are young ballerinas, will be interested in some of Isadora's other books, such as her version of "Swan Lake" and her charming story of "Lili at Ballet."

5-0 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC BOOK!
This book is great! The pictures are creative and funny. My children love this book. We have many, many bible story books, but this one is a favorite!

5-0 out of 5 stars My 4 yr old son loves this book from Grandpa & Grandma
We have been reading this book to our son for the last 9 months and he loves it! He is so excited to have Mommy or Daddy read him a story from this book at bed time. He knows the story of The Lost Sheep so well, that he has memorized it and is using this story to help him learn how to read! I love it and I am looking for other books by Nick Butterworth & Mick Inkpen. The stories and illustrations are spectacular!

5-0 out of 5 stars Stories Jesus Told
Stories Jesus Told is a fantastic book with clever and humorous illustrations. It impacted me and my children through the stories and vivid illustrations. My kids just keep asking to hear the stories over and over again. That in itself speaks volumes. The stories gave me a deeper understanding of the spiritual principles Jesus taught in the scriptures.

5-0 out of 5 stars Stories Jesus Told Omnibus Ed.
Great story rhythm. Pictures are charming, mixing the past with the familiar present items the children will recognize easily. Just the right mix of text and pictures. I read this to my son when he was 5 or 6 years old and when he could read, he read this by himself. Now I want to give my grandkids the chance to read and fall in love with this book, just like we did so many years ago. It is a classic!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply wonderful
I purchased several copies of this book years ago for my own children and to give as gifts. It is my godchild's favorite book to read at night. The familiar parables are given an amusing twist with illustrations which enhance the story line and strengthen the underlying lesson. I love this book for both the content and the illustrations and would love to see it reprinted. ... Read more

Book Description

The story of Ben is fiction, but it could be the story of more than one jazz musician who grew up in the twenties. Using the art-deco style of the period, Rachel Isadora not only captures the poignancy and yearning of a youthful talent, but in page after page of striking art seems to convey the very sound of music.

5-0 out of 5 stars Riviting and remarkable - a true classic
There are large and small crimes in the world. Small crimes includes little white lies and petty theft. Large crimes represent something much larger in the grand scheme of things. For example, it is a very large crime that it took the New York Public Library's 2003 100 Children's Books Everyone Should Know for me to discover "Ben's Trumpet". Have you seen this book? This is a gorgeous piece of work, particularly striking in its publication date (1979) but not dated. Not even a little. Following Ben, a young man living in a Harlem-esque neighborhood, the story depicts the boy's obsession with playing the trumpet. The plot is touching and has a happy ending that doesn't feel forced or tacked on. It flows just as smoothly as the book itself. Nice storylines aren't what push this book into greatness, however. Look at the illustrations a minute. Notice Isadora's use of line. Her clever placement of black and white. Look at the different drawing styles that emanate from the jazz musicians and their music. Now compare this to Ben's home, a simplistic realistic series of pictures. My favorite section comes after the trumpeter at the Zig Zag Jazz Club compliments Ben on his trumpet playing. The next two pages show the trumpeter walking away, his body curved, swaying to some internal music. On the opposite page there is a kaleidoscope of forms and images, possibly representing Ben's elation at the compliment. Possibly just serving as gorgeous filler. Please read this to your children. Teach this to your children. And give this book to everyone you know. Do I gush? I know I do. But trust me, this book is worth it.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Ben's Trumpet" is jazzy and modern
In the age of computer games and 3-D animation, the simple imagination of a child to envision himself learning to be a jazz musician is refreshing. Unlike previous reviews, I feel the dramatic black and white drawings set off some of the cultural issues the illustrations portray. Obviously, young Ben does not live an idealized childhood at home. Yet, he finds that his passion for music can only be fulfilled outside of jazz clubs (which usually perform late in the evening and he is too young to enter). The point of the book is how he acts out THIS reality. He is looking "outside of the box" (hence the illustrations of his home life) and finds the attention from the father-figure (the trumpeter) who Ben wants to imitate. The book vividly illustrates the importance of role models in a child's life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ben's Trumpet
As an international music teacher we need to give all theencouragement we can give to keep the music programs alive in ourschools. Not just in the states but in the world. This short story relates to the young hopeful musican who hopes to be a contributor to the music world - Keep the dream.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rich, Tender and Soulful
This one little picture book is among the most beautiful and powerful books I've ever read. In fact I don't feel as if I've simply read this book; I feel as though I've experienced it. It was fast and dizzy, yet calm and peaceful. I could almost feel myself sitting outside on a warm night, listening to the wail of jazz music floating on the air. With its simple, easy charm this book taps into the hopes of a small boy, and gives the reader hope that the goodness of the human spirit can triumph over its evils. This book has some of the most amazing illustrations that I've seen in a children's book, and it uses them very effectively. So, whether you are a parent looking for a book that will stimulate your child's imagination, a jazz enthusiast, an admirer of fine illustration, or just a person looking for a heart-warming experience, this book is a fabulous selection.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ben's Trumpet--a Caldecott Honor book
A wonderful book for young children about dreaming/hoping. With few words it gets its point across. Illustrations are incredibly varied and wonderful--I especially love the ones of the musicians! However, I am troubled by the drawing of Ben's father and his friends gambling and drinking--seems to add to stereotypical notions; I'd love to discuss it w/ the author/illustrator. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun for all
My daughter who is two and a half years old keeping this book by her bed and we have to read it at least once before she goes to bed. It is a good book that allows you to have fun with your kid (making puddle sounds, rain dances as long as you can imagine you will not be bored)

3-0 out of 5 stars Nice short story
This is a fairly simple book that my 3 year old likes, but my 5 year old finds a little too simple. It does have cute illustrations and would be a good rainy day book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Kipper is a hit
My 2-1/2 year old twins really love Kipper. It began with the TV shows (which they adore and beg for EVERY NIGHT) but they love the Kipper books too. Gentle characters and appealing themes. They like this one because it's been a rainy winter in San Francisco and they can relate to the umbrella and rain. They are fascinated with themes of WET v. DRY so this book helps with those notions. I also think the girls enjoy this book because of the charming non-busy pictures, and the simple themes that they can understand. Kipper is great!

5-0 out of 5 stars Splosh
If your child enjoys watching Kipper on tv they will love the liitle kipper books. Especially Splosh! It is a sound effects book about the rain. And everytime in the book we get to the part where the rain drips drips drips off the hedgehogs nose and than the hedgehog says Ah-Ah-Ah-Tishoo, my two year old son laughs everytime. You will love them all. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great version of Rip Van Winkle!
I really love this version of the story. I can't wait to share it with my 4th grade students who study New York history. I think it is pretty interesting.

4-0 out of 5 stars A cool book to read
This book is about a man who runs away from his father because the father does nothing but yell at him. This book is one of my favorites, even though I gave it a four, because it had a lot of action and it made me want to keep reading. Although I still think that the orignal was one of the better ones that have been written.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Book to Read
The book "Rip Van Winkle" is about a guy named Rip and his father, Dame, who thinks that Rip can never do anything right. Dame is always yelling at Rip. Dame really got mad when Rip sold part of the family property, so he went away for awhile and met some strangers and started to drink quite a lot of beer. You have to read the book to find out what happens next.

5-0 out of 5 stars All Aboard Reading Version
Several of these other reviews are for a different version of this story. The one I am reviewing is an "All Aboard Reading" version. It is definitely written for beginning readers (1st-3rd grade)

This version is a good introduction to the classic Washington Irving story. I do not like the way Rip's wife yells at him to get to work or how Rip is only "maybe...a little" sad when we finds out that his wife has died after his long sleep. Neither Rip nor his wife were the most exemplary characters! :-)

Still, that is the way the story was written and can be a good launch into a talk about character.

2-0 out of 5 stars Rip Van Winkle Hardback
This book is beautifully illustrated but not for the average upper elementary age child. The are lots of long and unusual words that will prove frustrating to the average 4th & 5th grader. It may work well for a read-aloud, but the momentum of the story will be lost by the time you stop and explain the meaning of so many words. Considering the vocabulary, a high school student could easily enjoy and learn about creative writing from this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Not Just a Witch is not Just for Children
Eva Ibbotson's delightful humor combined with Prunella Scales's flawless reading makes this audio book a winner. Two witches, lifelong friends, have a falling out when they appear at a party wearing identical (live) snake hats. They move away from one another and both are courted by an evil man who plans to use their powers to become rich. The plot is fast moving and funny, but it is the many humorous touches that make this story a hit with adult listeners as well as children. Who can resist a balloon inflated by politicians' hot air -- education ministers claiming that more testing will improve education, and an atomic energy minister claiming that nuclear waste is good for fish! Scales reads as if she believes every word so listeners soon forget there is a narrator between them and enter fully into the story. Great listening for ages eight and up. ... Read more

My three-year-old daughter loves Kipper. She is entranced by Kipper's show on Nick Jr. and loves reading stories about Kipper.
