Book Description

“If you don’t want your heart broken, don’t let on you have one.”

Sara Moone is an expert on broken hearts. She is a foster child who has been bounced from home to home, but now she is almost sixteen and can not live in the system forever. She vows that she will live in a cold, white place where nobody can hurt her again.

But there is one more placement in store for Sara. She is sent to live with the Huddlestons on their sheep farm. There, despite herself, Sara learns that there is no escape from love. It has a way of catching you off guard, even when you try to turn your back.

When it was published in 1994, Adam and Eve and Pinch-Me won every major children’s book award in Canada. Since then it has appeared in countries around the world. Its story of love and longing strikes a universal chord.

4-0 out of 5 stars Hits the bulls eye of the heart
Being both foster and adoptive parents, this is real stuff with real personalities and feelings portrayed. Wished I had read it in one sitting to get the full effect of the emotions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Grrrrreat and I haven't even finished it!!
The book is great for me. I only started reading this afternoon and I already love it! It's about this great Sara Moone a very interesting character whom many people will be able to relate to. Once you start this book...you won't be able to put it down. Go get it!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
This book was a great read! I especially enjoyed it because I'm interested in adopting in the future, and this gave me an insight into the foster care system, albeit in Canada. The writing was great, although it's definitely a young adult book and not an adult book! The plot line would be a bit too easy for adults, but I don't think this would be a problem with younger readers (high school would be fine with it).

All in all, I really enjoyed this! I hope to read more of this author's books! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One Of My Favorites
My aunt bought me this book for Christmas when I was about three or four, back in the late 70's when it was new. I loved it. It was my favorite book. My mom used to read it to me over and over again. I still have it, even though saddly the original cover is no longer with it. And I will never get rid of it. To this day I still every once in a while pull it off the shelf and read it, remembering those nights long ago when my mom was reading it to me. This is a great book, and if you can find a copy of it somewhere, I would highly recomend picking it up.

5-0 out of 5 stars A book I loved to death
This was my favorite book when I was little. My father read it to me over and over again until I had it memorized! The repetition is wonderful for young readers; even if your children can't read, Jeffers' illustrations are enough to make anyone a little sleepier. I still dream of ending up in the treehouse at the end of the book. It's a pity Close Your Eyes is no longer in print.

5-0 out of 5 stars My All-Time Favorite Bedtime Book
Over the years of reading books to my children, Close Your Eyes became both my favorite and my daughter's. The lyrical story is told on two levels, perfectly complimented by the illustrations. As a father, I identify with the dad in the story. My daughter is in college now, but we occasionally recite the story to eachother in our correspondence, and still treasure the countless bedtimes that we read this book together. It is, indeed, the perfect gift for new parents.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great words and pictures for toddlers
My son loves this book and it's a great way to prepare him for bed. Its words are simple and easy to remember. He's already memorized parts of the book (as have we). And the pictures are great. Colorful and full of recognizable objects and animals. My son actually anticipates each page. I'd recommend this book to anyone who uses reading stories as part of the bedtime ritual.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is my children's favorite bedtime story.
The lyrical poem and duel illustrations make this book a treasure. Susan Jeffers' illustrations of a father and his child's bedtime struggle add a whimsical touch. We have read this book so many times both my girls can recite it word for word. My eighteen year old daughter is threatening to steal the book when she leaves for college in the fall. I am browsing for additional copies in case she follows through on it. ... Read more

Book Description

When a little bird is inside an egg, it cannot walk, it cannot sing, and it cannot fly. All it can do is be sat on. But when the time is just right: "Pop!" -- out it comes. And then a little bird can do almost anything!

With the same insightful simplicity of their classic The Carrot Seed, Ruth Krauss and Crockett Johnson celebrate the promise and confidence of little birds (and young children) everywhere.

5-0 out of 5 stars Every bit as good as The Carrot Seed!
A year ago I went looking for this book, which turned out to be long out of print. In fact, the very knowledgeable bookstore staff I spoke to doubted its very existence! The Carrot Seed is a beloved classic, but its close sibling The Happy Egg had been strangely forgotten.I'm glad to see it back.

The two books are by the same husband-and-wife team, and share a natural kinship in their gentle rhythms, simple illustrations and surprisingly stirring, life-affirming conclusions. The Happy Egg is a book I can gladly read over and over, and over, to my toddler. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars we're ALL upside down!
This book is a scream, a howl, and a serious showing of how perception alters reality. The kangaroo thinks she is upside down because the picture in a book tells her so. She feels miserable. When her baby "corrects" the picture, everything is right again. The pictures are a delight.... especially the pictures of "YOU" standing around where you live, not doing much of anything! The expressions on the momma kangaroo's face are worth the price of admission. ... Read more

"At night David can fly. In the daytime he can't. In the daytime he doesn't even remember that he can. But at night, after his mother has put him to bed, he wakes up, sometimes.... It isn't flying exactly, but floating--he floats in the air." As he hovers over his parents, he can see their dreams, round and yellow, just over their heads. He can faintly see his dog Reddy's furry dream, too, before floating outside. In the moonlight, he can see mice dancing, how the vegetable garden looks in black and white, and a flock of sleeping sheep: "All of them except one are dreaming they're eating; that one is dreaming he's asleep." Throughout Randall Jarrell's dreamy, evocative prose poem we follow David in his nocturnal drifting. We hear the tender bedtime story of an owl to its owlets, until the owl--with "two big silent strokes of its wings sails away"--flies with the boy back to his house. There, he goes to sleep and wakes up to his loving mother, remembering nothing. Maurice Sendak's illustrations, which are never intrusive, capture the quiet moodiness of this piece--the final collaboration of Jarrell and Sendak before Jarrell's death in 1965. A starred review in School Library Journal says, "Jarrell writes with simple force and grace about the essential loneliness of life, but above all he is writing about love--family love, especially, which is shown to be strong and constant." 5-0 out of 5 stars A flight through dream land
This sweet and gentle book follows a young boy through one night of dreams. You see, in his dreams he can fly...! It is a simple tale, but fanciful and comforting. I bought a copy for a friend with children. She said that they complained when she started reading it to them because it is small, not brightly colored, and Maurice Sendak's artwork is fairly sophisticated in pen and ink. But when she insisted that they stop half way through... such pleading to continue! May you, too, have such troubles. ... Read more

In this kinder, gentler version of the old French fairy tale, the poor cinderwench forgives her stepsisters in the end and gives them a home in her palace. This Cinderella is pretty, but not perfect, and instead of having the tiniest feet in the kingdom, she in fact has wide feet (which fit the glass slipper nonetheless). From the details of the ball gowns to the trees of jewels glittering at the palace, Susan Jeffers's glowing, imaginative artwork is breathtaking. Jeffers has illustrated many fairy tales, as well as the popular McDuff books. With pen and ink and brilliant colors, she creates paintings of exquisite detail and clarity, wonderfully showcased by this book's large format and abundant full-page illustrations. The magical transformation of Cinderella into a beautiful princess never fails to capture the imagination of young ones, and this lovely edition is sure to be a hit. (Ages 5 to 7) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars school project
Cinderella lived with her two step-sisters. They gave her the nickname Cinderseat. They were really mean to her and made her do things for them. The king's son was to give a ball and everyone was invited. When the day came Cinderella began to cry and her godmother appeared and made her get a pumpkin, which she turned into a coach. She then turned mice into horses, and a rat into a coachman. Then dressed her in a beautiful dress and glass slippers. When she arrived she danced with the prince, but she had to leave before midnight. She left without telling anyone her name or anything. The next night they went to another ball and she left right before midnight in rags, and left one glass slipper behind. He checked around trying the slipper on everyone. When Cinderella tried it on it fit her perfectly, and the prince realized she was the mysterious girl he had danced with before and they were to be married. I think this is a good story for kids to read, because Cinderella was really nice to her step-sisters who were always so mean to her after everything.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cinderella PreK - 3
A rags to riches story of a mistreated young girl who was as sweet as she was good. With the help of a fairy godmother she is transformed into the belle of the prince's ball. A lost glass slipper reunites Cinderella and her prince. What do you think happens to her step-sisters? Good prevails.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cinderella, a fairy tale Illustrated by Loek Koopmans
This is one of the best retold stories of Cinderella out there. The story is clear and one that students grades 2 - 4 would benefit from reading, both for enjoyment and to boost their reading skills. The illustrations are lighthearted, colorful and pleasant, contrasting with the somewhat forbidding and fearsome illustrators of other fairy tales. This makes the book even more appropriate reading for the younger child as throughout the story there is a more hopeful tendency towards Cinderella's eventual outcome. I'm definitely ordering a few for my second grade classroom. ... Read more

Book Description

Anancy was the biggest and strongest spider in the whole town. He had traveled far and wide, climbed the highest mountains, and, yes, scared the most famous people. He loved to boast about his adventures, which, according to him, were bigger and better than anyone else's.

...until the day he swaggers into the haunted house at midnight. Just as his friends warned him, inside Anancy encounters a large rooster that dances on the table. The rooster invites Anancy to show off his talents too, and with all his friends watching, Anancy can't refuse. Suddenly, the rooster pounces and Anancy is pinned to the table. But just before Anancy becomes the rooster's next juicy meal, he is saved by the heroic efforts of his little friends.

Anancy (Anansi) stories originate in the oral tradition of the Ashanti people of Ghana. The character became a symbol of survival when introduced to Caribbean folklore by African slaves. In this original tale Anancy is at times generous and greedy, foolish but wise, and both timid and brave. He teaches us that there is strength in numbers. ... Read more
