Book Description

A blessed event

Carlotta's kittens have arrived -- five adorable pink-nosed, silk-eared bundles of fur. But what a responsibility for the five male cats in the Club of Mysteries! It's their job not only to protect the kittens from the dangers of the world -- like the tough river rats and even tougher Steak Knife and his Over-the-Hill gang (and his collection of the tails of his victims) -- but also to teach them the skills every cat needs to survive. And hardest of all, find them good homes before they end up at the dreaded pound. The Club of Mysteries gang has a hard enough time figuring out the ways of the world for themselves -- how can they raise a littler of helpless kittens? ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Totally GREAT book!
Carlotta's Kittens is an awesome book! It's exciting, adventurous, and hilarious! I rented it from the library and once I started reading the first and second chapters, I started loving it! I haven't read the first two books of the "Club Of Mysteries" series, but I still think it is one of the greatest books I've ever read! My favorite characters are Carlotta, Polo, Catnip, and Elvis. I loved all the characters, actually...but anyways, why don't YOU read it? I think you'll love it too!

4-0 out of 5 stars A Book Review of a Fun Book - Carlottas Kittens
Carlotta's Kittens by Phyllis Reynolds Nichols

Read this book. It's a mystery about cats and kittens and tails. This book is about a girl cat who has kittens and her friends from the alley. When she got back with her kittens her friends taught the kittens to do cat stuff, until one of the kittens got kidnapped by a one-eye cat. And some of Carlotta's friends go rescue the kitten by tricking the one eye cat.

I liked this book because it was funny. This book kept making me laugh. When I was reading this book it reminded me of a cat that fell off a tree and landed in my dad's arms.

I think the author wrote this book so that kids should find baby animals a home so they could know some animals are in danger.

5-0 out of 5 stars Carlotta's Kittens
This, is one of my favorite books. One day in Westport, Connecticut, my aunt Sally offered to buy me and my sister a book. I was having trouble choseing and then, she showed up and gave me a book to look at. After I had read the flap, I knew this was the book for me. I like cats, and adventure. My favorite cat is Elvis because he's a good singer, like me. Also he is black and I'm going to get a male black cat too. I also liked Carlotta and Sugar. I also like Catnip. There was one thing, everyonce in awhile, Scamper was a girl, and then, all of a sudden, a boy. I always thought she made a good discription of Steak Knife. If you like adventure, cats and kittens, get this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK! Mew mew mew mew mew!
Its my favorite book! (At least I think so).I'm a cat lover so it should be. My favorite part is when Polo (instead of Marco the cat who can reeeeeeaaaaaad) finds a home for the kittens in a house where there are a lot of old people and entertains them by playing on the lawn.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book of the series
The Marco and Polo books are my 5-year old son Bennett's favorites. We were extremely excited when the third book came out. Bennett thinks this is the best of the three. The tabbie cats have another series of great adventures, this time with the addition of 5 mischevious kittens. His favorite part was when Elvis sings songs to the kittens to try to get them to sleep. His next favorite part was the search for the kitten Catnip, but he doesn't want to give away too much of the story. Simply put, you can't go wrong with any of these 3 wonderful books. Our thanks to Mrs. Naylor. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Will they break their promise??
It seems the Orphan Train shares alot of titles with Sweet Valley Twins!!!LOL.I am reviewing Sweet Valley..Jessica and Elizabeth, twins, learn a secret language called Ithig.Their dad has taught it to them,as something he can share with his special twin daughters. They promise not to teach the language to anyone, but this makes their friends at school very cross!!!!!!

3-0 out of 5 stars Ithig??????!!
Mr.Ned Wakefield teaches Jessica and Elizabeth, his twin daughters,a secret language called Ithig(The ..word?..ithig is placed between syllables). The two do their best to keep the language a secret but their friends start acting like brats, feeling hapless that the secret will not be shared with them.Soon, the language is all around school!!Uh-oh!

4-0 out of 5 stars Not Much of a Secret
In "Keeping Secrets", the Wakefield twins learn a secret new language called Ithig, which is similar to pig Latin, except the word "ithig" is placed between the syllables of each word, lithigike thithigis. It sounds pretty complicated, but Elizabeth and Jessica pick up on it within minutes--even featherbrained Jessica.

Elizabeth and Jessica promise to keep it a secret with their father as a fun game, but their loyalty is tried when the girls' best friends (Amy Sutton and Lila Fowler) demand to know their secret or else. The reaction to the twins' secrecy is a little over dramatic and immature, but then again this is middle school.

Lila even refuses to invite the twins to a big star-studded party unless they tell her everything. Jessica, of course, is the first to break her promise. Soon everybody at Sweet Valley Middle School starts talking "Ithig", mainly as a way to confuse their new teacher Ms. McDonald.

"Keeping Secrets" certainly isn't the best Sweet Valley Twins book I've read so far, but if you're into secret languages, you might like this one.

3-0 out of 5 stars Keeping secrets
This book was pretty good.

I've seen better but it comes in pretty well

3-0 out of 5 stars Sweet Valley Twins
It looks like two books with the same title are being reviewed here, "The Orphan Train" and "Sweet Valley Twins." I'm going to review the Sweet Valley Twins book. In this story, Jessica and Elizabeth learn an artificial code language called "ithig." They promise to keep it a secret and not teach it to anyone, but they eventually bend and teach the whole school. Now the whole school knows the "ithig" language, and they plan to play a trick on a new teacher. And as always, Elizabeth comes to the rescue. I think it's a fun book to read, but it's not one of the best in the Sweet Valley Twins series. The story isn't very realistic, and the kids seem to catch on to the new language much too quickly. But it's fun, so I'll give it 3 stars. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best of the Shiloh Trilogy!!!!
Fans of the popular Shiloh books will not be disappointed with this book, the third installment of the series.
Saving Shiloh may be even better than its Newbery Award winning predecessor Shiloh.
Marty, Judd, and of course Shiloh are once again the main characters. This story delves more deeply into the relationship of Marty and Judd and whether kindness from others can change ones heart. An unsolved murder adds excitement and new plot lines.
Fans of the series that live in the beautiful state of West Virginia will not be disappointed. Familiar city names are once again mentioned and some that are not so familiar such as Little.
Whether you live in West Virginia or not this book and the others in the series are wonderful. You can't help but feel like you are part of Marty's family and they way he deals with his younger sisters is so real.
Now that we have finished the series we are planning to make a day trip to visit Friendly, WV and see if we can find the old Shiloh school house.

5-0 out of 5 stars Saving Shiloh
I gave this book five stars because I love animal books. Last fall (in Shiloh Season)Judd Travers got into a car accident that would have killed him but a dog named Shiloh barked and whined till someone came to see what was wrong. Now the tables have turned. It' Judd's turn to save Shiloh. I like this book because it's really easy for me to put my family and myself into Marty and his family's position.

5-0 out of 5 stars The End
This is a breath-taking conclusion! Everyone at Marty's school is saying bad things about Judd Travers after a series of theft and house break-in's. They're even blaming him for murder! When Marty's sister Dara-Lynn naerly falls into a river, Marty is too focused on her to see Shiloh rushing down the river. Judd sees it all. Will Judd help the poor Beagle? Or let him drown as punishment for running away from him? Read the book and see for yourself.

5-0 out of 5 stars Shiloh
I liked the book a lot. I have a certain kind of taste if it dose'nt hold my attencion for more than 5 minets it's boring, but Shoiloh was great! Marty lives with his Mom,Dad, and his 2 sisters.Marty want a dog, but his Mom says they can't afourd one.Marty finds a dog by the Shiloh Bridge.

4-0 out of 5 stars Saving Shiloh
I liked the book because it had good dialog, description, and detail. The main characters were the dogs, the dad, and Marty. It was exciting and heart-stopping with vivid detail of Shiloh and the Baker's german shepard. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes dogs. ... Read more

Book Description

Now that she is setting into eighth grade, the class she used to envy, Alice discovers it isn't as exciting as she thought. She's tired of being the same old Alice, and longs to be a bit outrageous.

Instead, she finds herself in situations that are more embarrassing then they are thrilling. She likes dressing up as a showgirl for Halloween, but hasn't counted on what happens in the broom closet at school. And she's delighted to be a bridesmaid, but feels awkward at the bridal shower. Even Patrick begins to seem childish to her.

Elizabeth and Pamela, however, her two best friends, feel that life is changing too much for them. Elizabeth finds that a new a boy at school is attracted to her, while Pamela faces a serious problem at home. Lester, too, Alice's brother, can't quite believe he's losing his old girlfriend, Crystal. When Alice dials Miss Summers, however, the woman her father loves, there is always the hope that this time she will get the mother she has always wanted. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Be aware of the adult things Alice does
Alice is certainly growing up and is true to the character which Mrs. Naylor has created. However, it is now time for the elementary school to be aware of the contents of the book, as Alice attends a shower, where she is given a fairly expicit questionnaire to answer, and the girls continue their discussion of sex by wondering about positions. Yes, this is a wonderfully funny and realistic book, but be sure you know what you are getting. It is not a book for the 9-year old.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very funny and lifelike.
I really liked this book because Alice is trying to figure out her life, and all her new looks. And Crystal's wedding was a complete success, except Danny was a little drunk. All the Alice books tell me what to do in real life, and I want to know what other people think about growing up. I rate this book four stars because it is very funny, and emotional. It also seems that somewhere in America, a girl really did spike her hair and make it green. It is very lifelike.

3-0 out of 5 stars Sorry, NOT for 9-13 year olds
I bought this book for my 11 year old daughter. SHE brought it to me and pointed out different passages that she felt her teacher would not approve of. Examples: After being at a bridal shower where there were games, Alice asks her 21-yr old brother some of the questions from the game such as "have you ever mentally undressed a stranger" and "have you ever made love in a room besides the bedroom". I am no prude by any stretch of the imagination but I AM a firm believer in letting kids be kids. THIS BOOK IS NOT FOR AN 11 YEAR OLD or anyone younger. I can't believe other people haven't written about this before. It's a shame we have to censor everything our kids watch on tv and read these days.

4-0 out of 5 stars PG-13!
I enjoyed this book, but am rather amazed that the recommended age level is 9-13. I haven't read any of the earlier ones, so I don't know if they all have so many sexual references, but this one has a pretty steady diet of talk about breasts, lingerie, French kissing, missionary position, etc. Is this really aimed at 9 year olds? The thoughtful and humorous treatment of confusing issues is good, but I think the book should be in Young Adult sections or Middle School Libraries.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outrageosly Alice
I think that this a a very good book. This book is about a girl named Alice who decides to cange her look. If you like Phyllis Reynolds-Naylor books or if you just like comedies than check it out. ... Read more

It's August, and the whole gang is having a terrific time, hanging out at Mark Stedmeister's swimming pool -- except Alice, who has a secret even from her best friends Pamela and Elizabeth. Alice is deathly afraid of deep water, and just as afraid of what will happen if her secret gets out.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another fine job by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor
A book that continues the series of Alice McKinley. Her fear of swimming in deep water takes its toll over the summer-Will her friends find out? Excuses can only work for a little while, then what will she do? Read to find the conclusion to this great book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book For Everyone!
Alice is back in one of the best books that Phyllis Reynolds Naylor has written! Alice gets trapped when some boys and girls were hanging out at Mark's pool. Alice can't swim in deep water. So when Mark and the other boys try and fool around, Alice gets in trouble, and she needs to learn how to swim! This is a great book that I recommend to everyone that likes to read funny stories.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not Bad
This ALICE book was, frankly, a little disappointing. I love ALICE books but... I feel that this book wasn't as good as Phyllis Reynolds Naylor has written in the past. For other readers' information, this book is mainly about how Alice wants to fit in with her group of friends by hanging out at the pool with them. She hopes that they don't find out the truth, which is that she really can't swim. She gets embarrased because she was pushed in the pool by a friend but panics. Her brother teaches her to swim and everything works out.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great
I thought this book was real great! But sometimes Alice can get a bit annoying because she's always butting into her dad's life. But I liked the Alice series because it's very realistic. Girls like talk about boys and school and stuff. It was a real good book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Alice Afraid
This ALICE novel is about young Alice as she faces her terror of swimming. It would have been a better book without all the sexual content. If parents don't want their kids to read Arabian Knights(Ok I admit there are worse) then they won't want to buy this book for them. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I can't believe this is out of print
This is a terrific book. In using it as a children's librarian, I never met a kid who didn't love it -- and many wanted to check it out right away. It's got a strong heroine & lots of humor. James Marshall's pictures are perfect for the Ogden Nash poem.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Adventures of Isabel
My son is 4 and loves this book! We have read it every night this week, at his request. It is a wonderful book for learning new words (cavernous, scurry). It taps into my son's sense of the absurd. The theme of a child conquering big, scary things is very age appropriate. I highly recommend this book!

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good
We got this book because we thought it was WRITTEN by James Marshall. Oops. Was told it was a good "positive book for girls" etc. kind of stuff. Yeah. Its okay. The rhymes just aren't very in-sync. Sorry, but its just okay. Some of the phraseology is not easy for younger children to understand. Since this book apparently is supposed to flow, by rhyme, taking time to explain (why Isabel gave the doctor a cure by giving him his own shot in the butt, for example) each new rhyme on each new page of Isabel's weird adventures makes it unappealing. I haven't been asked to reread this book since I bought it. PS. James Marshall does a great job illustrating, though! :)

5-0 out of 5 stars The Adventures of Isabel
This is absolutely my favorite children's book. Every little girl should read and enjoy it. I recommend it for big girls too. It's the best! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Stories from Shakespeare
My copy has been a family treasure, thus read aloud over and over. This is an excelent book to read aloud with families and children. The many small illustrations aid the interest of the young reader and listener. E. Nesbit creates an excellent transition between today's spoken English and the language you will hear in Shakespeare's plays.

1-0 out of 5 stars See for Yourself...
This book is good for historical value and amusement, but if seeing a Timon of Athens who looks like he waltzed out of a fairy story is bothersome to you, don't buy it. E. Nesbit is firmly of the "Shakespeare is the greatest moralist since Jesus Christ" school, and the plots have been tailored to fit this characterization. The tales have so little to do with actual Shakespeare that your own memorial reconstructions would be more accurate and entertaining. But you can check it out for yourself at .

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
I think that this is a great book to help children and anyone else to understand Shakespeare. It is written in clear easy to understand text and is a great way to get the basic story line of Shakespeare's most poupular plays. I do have one complaint and that is the publisher's spelled E. Nesbit's name wrong they spelled it Nesbitt when it is really Nesbit. It is a good thing E. Nesbit isn't around anymore because I don't think she would appriciate it, I know I wouldn't.

5-0 out of 5 stars Shakespeare for Children
Beautiful Stories from Shakespeare for Children provides a rich introduction to 20 plays of the Bard. The preface states: "But Shakespeare wrote for grown-up people... Hence this volume. To reproduce the entertaining stories contained in the plays of Shakespeare, in a form so simple that children can understand and enjoy them, was the object had in view by the author..."

E. Nesbitt, author of Five Children and It, does just that. Most of these retellings are 10 to 15 pages long. Read one of Nesbitt's beautiful stories before attending a performance of a play or before participating in a reader's theatre.

The last chapter in this book is a collection of quotations from Shakespeare. This provides fodder for recitations and/or copy work. ... Read more

Book Description

For Doug's brother, Gordie, the ridge with its spectacular view is a magical, special place, but for Doug, it's The Fear Place. Two years ago, Doug hiked to the ridge during his family's annual camping trip, and he vowed never again to cross the narrow ledge from which the earth dropped away six hundred feet to the canyon below.

But now the boys' parents have been called from their vacation by a family emergency, and Doug and Gordie are alone in the wilderness. After one of their seemingly endless fights, Gordie has stomped away from their campsite. When Girdle doesn't return, Doug fears the worst, particularly when he hears reports that a cougar has been sighted nearby. Doug knows he has to go after his brother, and he knows where he will find him. What he can't imagine is the surprising source of the courage to overcome his fears. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Must read!
As a teacher, I would strongly recommend this book be added to any classroom library or list of books for students to read. The sibling rivalry between Doug and his older brother Gordie will be easily related to among students. There is definite growth in the main character as he is forced to face his strongest fear. Students will be able to discuss and connect with this story in many ways: the way their parents left the brothers in the wild alone, the sibling rivalry between the brothers and/or between their mother and uncle, or how the cougar plays into the story. This novel will keep your students interest.

4-0 out of 5 stars WILDERNESS SURVIVAL AND SIBLING RIVALRY
This intense tale will rivet you to your chair, just as the young hero is riveted in fear about a certain ledge on the mountain. Extended sibling rivalry between brothers threatens to undermine their very survival, as implacable fate and terse narrative communicate a sense of impending danger. The plot marches inexorably to the moment when Doug must brave a critical site on a circuitous mountain trail, which has long been his personal fear place.

Tension builds in this sparse story--almost like a play with basically three characters: 12-year-old Doug, the younger brother/victim of his older brother's nasty tricks; Gordon who baits Doug daily for psychological sport; and a wild-card nobody counted on--a non-aggressive female cougar.

Doug comes of age on this short, geological camping trip with his hated rival brother and preoccupied parents--until they are called away by a family emergency, leaving the boys to fend for themselves. Each tries to survive independently, with unexpected results. But there is another fear place inside Doug's conscience, when Gordon fails to return to camp after several days--fear For his brohter. Since when is Doug his brother's keeper?

Nor is it safe to be exploring treacherous ridges and unknown trails with a cougar roaming about. But it would take too long to notify the park ranger. So Doug's his worst fear place is the threat of the denuded family-- emotional baggage inherited from his mother, who never was reconciled to Her brother. Can anything break this chain of sibling jealousy and rejection? A gripping tale which will spellind the reader.

4-0 out of 5 stars FEAR PLACE BY PHYLILIS REYNOLDS NAYLOR
THE FEAR PLACE BY PHYLLIS REYNOLDS NAYLOR IS ABOUT AN 11 YEAR OLD KID, NAMED DOUG, WHO'S FAMILY GOES TO THE ROCKY'S MOUNTAINS IN COLORADO EVERY YEAR. They're right. Marty does the only thing he can think of to do, and discovers just how deep a hurt can go and how long it takes to heal.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a good book.
It all first started when Shiloh was being abused by his owner Judd Travers. So Marty tried to take him away but after an attack from a German Shepherd, Shiloh was hidden no more. His parents found out ing and worse Judd Travers Shiloh Season was a book about a boy named Marty and a dog named Shioh, and a man that Marty despises named Judd Travers. In this book Marty feels like he did not get Shioloh fair and square. He thinks that the only reason that he got Shiloh was because he saw Judd do something that he was not allowed to do. Because of this Marty keeps on getting the feeling that Judd wants Shiloh back. But Marty loves Shiloh and doesn't want to give him up. There is a lot of conflict going around with Judd and Marty. Since Marty had taken away Shiloh from Judd he has been drinking and drinking ever since. Marty is worried that since he drinks and is violent he might come after Marty or even worse come after Shiloh and kill him. Marty fears for his life. He has to look over his shoulder every second of his life.

4-0 out of 5 stars Top Caliber Sequel..............
Once again Phyllis Reynolds Naylor has delivered a fantastic family story. Her writing style makes you feel as if you are part of the story. The story is full of family values. As a native West Virginian I love to hear mention of the West Virginia towns of Clarksburg, Wheeling, Sistersville, Middlebourne, St. Mary's, and of course Friendly.

This sequel to Shiloh finds Marty adjusting to his life with the beloved beagle he saved from an abusive owner. Marty is concerned that the owner may still try to take Shiloh away or worse try to shoot him. Marty struggles with his conscience in dealing with Judd Traverse. At times he can't stand him and; yet, he also can't help but feel that Judd is the way he is because he does not know any other way to act, that know one has ever showed him love and respect. Marty is determined to show Judd that all people are not bad.

The story did to seem to end abruptly.

We are excited about reading the next book in the trilogy.

5-0 out of 5 stars BEST BOOK EVER!!!
This book was exciting and had all sorts of little twists. And I can't wait to read the other two Shiloh books. And even the others that Mrs. Naylor might write in the series! Shiloh Season has been a wonderful understanding and ends very nicely. If you want to find out how it ends, read it right away!

5-0 out of 5 stars Grandma Loves "Shiloh" Audio Book!
We've enjoyed the video stories of Shiloh and Marty and passed these videos on to our grandchildren, so purchasing a set of "Shiloh Season" audio cassettes proved to be a real treat to listen to when we recently drove three hours to visit the kidlets.

Michael Moriarty is a favorite actor of ours. His family man roles are especially delightful. His 6'-4" frame and expressive voice and mannerisms combine to give him a "big hero" success with such roles. So-o-o-o listening to Michael Moriarty's wonderful narration of this unabridged, two audio cassettes story telling as Marty in the first person is just wonderfully captivating.

This audio book would be hold the attention of children ages 10 years and up, and grandparents will love it too. It's excellent as a stand-alone story experience without seeing the videos first; however those could provide an added treat to visualize the "action" better. This set would make a nice gift too!

Hope you enjoy the experience of "Shiloh Season" as narrated by Michael Moriarty. We truly did!

5-0 out of 5 stars A rewiew of shiloh season
The book shiloh season was a good book I thought . My favorite part was where Marty and his freind had gone sneaking over to Judd's house and he shot a squirrel . The first part of the book was a little slow but the good stuff kicked in the middle . All in all it was a good book I recmend it to kids. ... Read more

Because it is offered only to fifth graders, this is Andy's one chance to enter and win the Roger B. Sudermann essay contest. Grand prize: $50 and, most important of all, Andy's name and picture in the newspaper. But unlike other years, when the topic assigned had been really exciting, this year's topic is a bummer. Andy's cousin, and rival, Jack, has no trouble getting started, but Andy doesn't know what he will do.

Then he notices a big brown beetle crawling through the grass. One thing leads to another, and before long, Andy is using Aunt Wanda's saucepans for recipes Aunt Wanda never dreamed. Just when his essay is going well, however, Andy realizes that if he does win the contest, he's in big trouble! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I think it is a great book to read
It shows how people will do something crazy just to win a contest this one boy Jack did a crazy thing like putting Hamburgers on his dads engine and Andy Moller is Jack's cousin he was cooking crickets in brownies and giving them to kids at lunch and the kids did not know.I like this book because they will do anything to get something.I think people today are the same way like if you want some candy you ask your mom can you have some money to go and get some candy from the store

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!
Andy Moller is a typical fifth grader, a great kid with a fantastic sense of humor. Andy's true gift, however, is his unbelievable imagination. Cooking insects as a food source is a great topic to write on. The book is very enjoyable with lots of family humor thrown in. A great read for kids of all ages. Do yourself a favor and get your hands on it soon!

5-0 out of 5 stars David's Search/Our Find
I used this book as part of my ESL curriculum.I had two 5th grade boys share the reading of David's Search with me.It introduced a lot of vocabulary but more than that, it's portrayal of an alienated young man experiencing racial prejudice was especially touching and pertinent to many of the children with whom I work. The boys became engrossed with the story and ultimately wanted to read it themselves without my assistance.I got shut out of our reading group. The story spoke to my students...and to me.The book is especially well written, as are all of the Orphan Train series books I have encountered. Although the story is appropriate for 5th grade and above, the students do not need a 5th grade reading ability to read it.It is especially appropriate for less developed readers for this reason.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Difficult Decision
It is 1866, and twelve year old Will Scott is not happy to be on the Orphan Train. That is because he is not an orphan .He has a father,Jesse, who is a circus performer. But Jesse tells Will he will have a better family and a better life out west. Will is placed with kindly Mr. and Mrs. Wallace. Will assists Dr. Wallace on his rounds of local farms and finds he is very good at helping people that are sick or hurt. Still, Will misses his father terribly. Then one night Jesse's circus comes to town and Will needs to make a big decision. Will's Choice is a great book for one reason. It teaches about important things in life such as love. It does this by showing us that Will has to choose whether to go back with his father, who originaly dumped him, or stay with the loving Wallaces. I recomend this book cause it has a very important message for all of us.
