5-0 out of 5 stars Silkworms are wonderful
This book is the best book on teaching both young children and adults about silkworms. The photographs are wonderful!I use this book the most in school. The kids tend to pick this book up the most when I have the display of silkworms in the room.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful photos and detailed description
I'm a Japanese and my hobby is making flowers from silk cocoon. Even though I deal many cocoons, it was my first time to see silkworms. Even in Japan, there is few opportunity to see real silkworms... This book tells me a lot about silkworms and silk farmers in Japan.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a MUST-HAVE for teachers!!
This book offers detailed information about different critters that are "common" to a classroom in an interesting and "easy to read" way. It provides terrific experiements to conduct, and values following the chid's lead and interests- creating experiments from their questions! WONDERFUL!

5-0 out of 5 stars I highly recommend this book to k-12 science teachers!
This is an excellent book for anyone interested in science experiments and the scientific method. It is appropriate for any child grades k-12, with minor adaptations. The writing is clear, concise and accurate. Most of the experiments involve insects. Materials are inexpensive and easy to obtain. The book contains lists of suppliers and references. Book Description

Have you ever wondered what life on a farm was like hundreds of years ago? This beautiful book tells the story of one farm and the people who worked on it from medieval times to the present day.

Evocative illustrations by Eric Thomas reflect the rhythm of the seasons and their accompanying tasks, from plowing and sowing to harvesting and haymaking, while flaps lift to reveal changing activities inside the farm buildings. Angela Wilkes's finely crafted text details the changing nature of life on a farm, capturing the atmosphere of days gone by.

Follow the history of a farm as it develops from a small piece of land rented from the local lord of the manor in the 9th century, into a large, mechanized farm of the 21st century.

A Farm Through Time is not only the story of a farm -- it is a portrait of country people, a changing landscape, and of disappearing crafts. It is a book to treasure and return to time and time again. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Dramatic and engaging
What my (now 6 yo) daughter likes is a good story. She can learn anything if there is some dramatic action involved. This story of George Washington Carver's life is just the right length for a young student (kinder to 4th grade). It starts with the drama of the baby GWC being kidnapped and returned. The illustrations are bold and capture the flavor of the text. It's everything you want in a child's book, educational, morally inspiring, and yet a truly good to read story. ... Read more

Book Description

In Bali, as in many parts of the world, rice is more than just a staple food-rice is life!

In Bali, life revolves around the planting and harvesting of rice. While eels slip through the mud and dragonflies flutter overhead, farmers plant seedlings in the wet rice field, or 'saweh.' Soon each plant is crowned with flowers, and tiny green kernels appear. Rain nourishes the kernels, which grow plump and sweet. The green plants turn golden and ripe, and everyone helps harvest the grain. When the harvest is finished, the farmers give thanks to the goddess of rice for a successful crop.

From planting the seeds to harvesting the ripe grain, this beautiful, poetic book tells the story of rice and of the Balinese people, for whom rice is life.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
I have to say that this is a great book that shows you the passion an author can have for what he or she is writing about(especially if the author explains his reasoning, feelings, and regrets about his book to you !*personally*!). Not to mention the information it gives you on otters and oils spills. It teaches you how bad it can be for a disaster of this monstrous preportion to occur and why you should do all in your power to stop it. It makes you sit there and wonder what you can do to help your environment!

5-0 out of 5 stars Sea Otter Rescue
I thought "Sea Otter Rescue: The Aftermath of an Oil Spill" was a wonderful book with universal appeal. The photographs taken by the author Roland Smith were heartwarming and sometimes disturbing. "Sea Otter Rescue" is the story of the Exxon Valdez accident in Prince William Sound in Alaska and the superhuman effort to save the lives of the sea otters affected by the oil. The author, Roland Smith, was among the volunteers who rushed to Alaska to try to save these sweet animals. This is his story and the story of the others who took part in this effort. Great humanitarian story. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Bilingual choice for active boy
Trying to bring up our children with english and german, this book offers a great opportunity to read, as the pictures are obvious and beautifully photographed, and I can translate quickly, without the need of a dictionary. My boy doesn't sit still for long, so single images are great, he can concentrate for as long as possible, without a story being interupted, if he's patient I can make a story around an item, if not we just move from image to image. I love the series, and we have the other titles as well.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good
I probably have about 6 books in the "My First" series and found this is yet another good book in this series. I like the way that the "My First" books categorize things (noisy animals, farm colors, etc.) and this one is well done. They are all essentially picture dictionaries and a bit boring for parents but our kids love looking at them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!
This series of board books are fantastic.

I started collecting these for my daughter after she was given one at 6 months and this is what we started to read to her every night. She woud sit and demand it to be read over and over and over again. The board pages and are easy for baby and toddler to turn and the pictures (real photography not illustrations) are wonderful.

The farm one has lots of animals, fruit and vegetables and reading them over and over my toddler can now read and say the names of each thing herself while pointing to them. She recognises things she sees on her dinner plate and goes and gets the book to compare.

If your looking for a great picture book to share with your baby this is the one (and the series of books) to buy. You can never have too many books to read with your children.

5-0 out of 5 stars reading in louisiana
I bought this book for my 14 month old little boy. He loves it - he carries it around the house. Of course, he can't read it yet, but he loves to point at the different, beautifully pictured animals in the book and listen to me say their names. He can even point to some of them after I say their names now! I love this book - great for toddlers. Easy to read, durable!

4-0 out of 5 stars My first farm board book
We like the board book for several reasons. The bright colors and the shape of the animal characters. The board pages are great because they stand upright and are durable. The babies love the stimulation. It's a good way to encourage the development of colors and shapes while they are here in our Intensivecare Nursery. One of our baby who is on a ventilator for a long time loves to look at Zebra until he goes back to sleep. Thank you for letting me write this review. Books are great for

everyone. And we are very fortunate that the colorful books are available for sick infants as well. NICU RN ... Read more

Book Description

A powerful poem and stunning, handmade-paper art encourage children to protect nature.

"Where once there was a wood,
A meadow and a creek . . . "

Inspired by events in her own backyard, award-winning author and illustrator Denise Fleming creates a poignant yet hopeful portrait of our disappearing natural environment. The last pages of the book teach children how to make a more "creature friendly" backyard, including information about what types of food, trees and flowers attract different kinds of animals. Where Once There Was a Wood also includes an informative bibliography for budding environmentalists, and suggests various projects that families can do together.

5-0 out of 5 stars An eloquent plea for preserving natural habitats
Denise Fleming based "Where Once There Was a Wood" on the woods, meadows, and creek near her home in Toledo, Ohio. She spent a lot of time watching the wild animals go living in the woods, but now that area is a housing development.Through a series of bold, colorful paintings of the animals in the woods, and simple, poetic text, Fleming brings the natural habitat alive, capturing the change in a single picture of row after row of houses. Thus, the book leaves it up to young readers to make draw their own conclusions about how people should treat the living places of animals.

"Where Once There Was a Wood" serves two functions.First, it shows how animals and people can live close to one another.Everything Fleming depicts can be seen in most wooded areas.Second, it suggests that the natural homes of animals need to be respected on some level. In the back of her book Fleming urges her readers to "Welcome Wildlife to your Backyard Habitat."Explaining how wild creatures have four basic needs to space, shelter, water, and food, she provides a detailed list of food, trees and shrubs, as well as flowers, that can be used in your backyard to attract wild animals.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book, positive and empowering environmental message.
Story gently reminds us that our homes displaced wild areas and helps us think about how to remedy the damage.Great illustrations and a wonderful specific guide at the end showing simple yet significant ways children andadults can help, starting in their own yard. ... Read more
