Great book from a great website!!
This is a great book! My son (10 years old) begged me to buy it for him becuase he's a big fan of Brainpop.com, and its already his favorite book. The science is simple and colorfully explained with fun characters, but the explanations are thorough enough so that all ages can get something from it. It explains everything from day-to-day technologies like cell phones to the structgure of the earth to what the world might be like in the future. What a great book for kids adn even adults!! ... Great Beach reading for kids and adults
Our copy of Time Almanac 2004 is already dog eared and full of sand.My nine-year-old daughter and I pass it back and forth to each other at the beach.It is a lively, colorful resource book that kids will immediately identify as "cool".It is also helpful for parents, both in reminding you of all those planet facts you have long forgotten and to keep a finger on the pulse of what kids should be knowing.I, also, found the homework skills and test-taking sections great for reminding me how to help my children address schoolwork...

Tons of Must-Have Facts and Homework Help
This almanac is chock full of important and up-to-date facts and figures that kids need to know for homework and reports. It's also a blast to peruse. As a parent of twin second graders, I encourage my kids to use the book when they have a question about geography, history, math, anything!! I often read it to them at storytime, and we play trivia games with it. My kids love the vibrant photos and illustrations. I use it myself for puzzles and to impress friends with my knowledge of facts and figures!

Highly recommended by professional admissions consultants!
We are particularly fond of this book because it provides a comprehensive review of universities and colleges based on majors, size, and geographic region. Even if the college applicant has a particular focus with his or her college selection, this book is still likely to open your eyes to possibilities you may have otherwise overlooked. This guide is very useful for its thorough research and inclusion of smaller regional schools that excel in a particular field but do not get the same publicity as the more prestigious national schools.

What Everyone Should Know Before Choosing A College
This book has been a perennial leader in college reference books. And, this edition is no different. It gives you all the information about all the colleges. But, how do you make the right choice? Want the answer? As an education counsellor, I'll tell you what I have been telling many others. The answer is UNDERSTANDING, understanding the REAL purpose of college education --- what our founding fathers, especially education pioneer Thomas Jefferson, said was absolutely critical that college education accomplish for both you and our Nation. I recommend, before you do anything, that you first read the only book about understanding higher education --- "West Point", by Norman Thomas Remick. In it, Thomas Jefferson explains in simple language, through his founding of West Point (hence, the title), the reasons for having colleges in America. It's a heads up that will help you make the right decision and save you from making a big, life-altering mistake down the road by bringing everything into clear focus for you. Once you understand and have a clear perspective, then go on and pour over the college reference books, especially the five-star "Rugg's Recommendations On Colleges".

REAL help for parents and students!

Rugg's Recommendations - a perennial favorite
Rugg's Recommendations On The Colleges is now in its 17th edition. New and updated editions have been published every year since 1988 (every 2 years before that). The book's enduring popularity is testimony to its usefulness in the college search process, especially in the list-building phase. I buy multiple copies every year for my college counseling office and always keep it within reach when working with students. The book is a staple in high school guidance and college advising offices nation-wide.

The author is a former counselor and is well-respected by members of his former profession. He is also well-known for the seminars that he presents for counselors around the country. As a former counselor, Rugg knows what information students and parents need and he provides it. The foundation of the book is the 83 lists of colleges grouped by majors and divided into three levels of selectivity. The colleges on each list are "recommended" for each major based on discussions with students at the colleges and counselors across the country, and on Rugg's own research and visits.

To the author's credit, he does not rank colleges the way that the national magazine (the one with two names and the ampersand) does. This is also a factor in the respect that counselors have for his work. Also to his credit, he states that the "book is not perfect." No publication in this field is, although a couple of them would like us to believe that they are.

The book also includes other helpful hints and information such as a list of the 100 colleges that he hears the most nice things about, colleges that "offer students the best opportunity to maximize their education." It also includes a list of colleges that offer "wellness" dormitories. Rugg's approach encourages students to find colleges that will be good fits while smartly avoiding the "more selective the college the better it must be" approach that fuels the magazine rankings mentioned above.

Cracked Corn and Snow Ice Cream
This precious book caught my eye mainly because of the "snow ice cream" in the title! How fondly I remember my mother scooping up great heaps of freshly fallen snow to make that wonderful treat! And in this book we have the RECIPE!

I bought the book as a gift for a 10-year-old girl who lives on a farm, plus an extra copy for myself!

There are many, many wonderful thoughts, facts, pictures, and memories to beguile almost anyone, any age. Don't miss it!

I found this book to be very delightful. It brought back memories of my own great grandmother and the stories she told. Great for my 5th Grade Class
Uncle Sam and Old Glory is an invaluable resource for the classroom teacher who wants to turn her students on to American History. Each symbol is explained in detail in an easy to read and interesting manner. Likewise, each symbol is accompanied by beautifully detailed woodcut illustrations. Not only did my fifth graders find Uncle Sam and Old Glory to be informative and interesting; but, it served as a springboard to further reading and research. I highly recommend that Uncle Sam and Old Glory be included in every classroom library. I plan to use it year after year with my fifth grade students.

An Excellent Teacher Resource
I am a 3rd grade teacher and I highly recommend this book. It is an excellent resource for teaching about the Symbols of America. Each page focuses on the origins and meanings of a particular symbol in concise, yet highly interesting text. The illustrations are full color and fabulous. My students love this book and practically fight to be able to read it during free time.

You can't go wrong buying anything by Jim Arnosky
I especially like this one because it goes through all four seasons of the year. He includes puzzles, hidden pictures, quizzes and activities. His illustrations are beautiful!

I also like his "Guide to Knowing..." series.

And "Drawing from Nature" and "Drawing Life in Motion" (I think that's the title).

Then there is "All about Deer", "Rabbits & Raindrops", etc.. Just click on his name and check out all of his titles (some unfornately have gone out of print). Check your library for those or try to find them used.

This is a winner
I love this book! It is a great reference book for kids of all ages and is packed full of interesting information on just about every topic you can think of. We previously had purchased the 2000 edition of this book and my kids have used it countless times since then for everything from school to scouts. We are excited to have the new one - it is current and up to date and we are all enjoying reading it. This is a wonderful almanac to own.

Great Ref. for kids
This is a great reference for kids, it is really up to date and it really helps for history and social homework. My kid has bought all of the World Almanac's For kids since 2000, and she loves this new one. Since she is really interested in astrology and astronomy, this is the perfect ref. book for her, and the whole book is easy for kids to understand, there is hardly any hard vocabulary, even if there is, they would explain the word like a dictionary. I really recommend this Almanac for your kids, I guarentee they'll find it interesting!
