5-0 out of 5 stars A teacher recomends the "Animal Ark" series
I am thrilled to finally find a book that both boys and girls enjoy equally well. The "Animal Ark" books have the "aaw" factor of cuddly animals that the girls love and the suspense factor to hold the fleeting attention of the boys. These books NEVER sit on the shelf! Although the target audience and reading level are younger students, the 12-14 set like them just as much. A lovely respite from Harry Potter, too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Do You Like Animals?
Would you like to work at Animal Ark? You will find out what it is like to help animals.
Mandy and James find squirrels in the school. The janitor wants to get rid of them by putting poison down. Will Mandy and James save the family of squirrels? Read Squirrels in The School by Ben M.Baglio and find out. It is a very exciting book because of all the action.

4-0 out of 5 stars Squirrels in the School
The wonderful series "Animal Ark" is always gaining more and more readers. Each book in the series has a fascinating story going on. "Squirrels in the School" is certainly no disappointment and is suspenseful to the very last page.

Animal loving Mandy Hope (the main character) is helping out behind the scenes of the school play making costumes, with her humorous friend James, who is taking care of the lighting and cables. What they don't know is that a family of squirrels is causing for major trouble in the play, damaging costumes and biting through cables. Mandy and James find out and tell the director of the play. News travels quickly, the head wants them evicted and calls in Pest Control! Will Mandy and James be able to stop them?

"Squirrels in the School" is a wonderful and enchanting book which will keep all readers (Ages 9 to 15) excited to the very end!

4-0 out of 5 stars Squirrels in the School A Must Read
The name of the book I read was Squirrels in the School. This book was written by Ben M. Bagilio. In the beginning Mandy's school is having a play. She met a pair of squirrels outside of the school building and names them Salt and Pepper. The next day Mandy came back to see her headdresses ruined. Was it Salt and Pepper? Are they causing havoc throughout the school? To find out simply read the book Squirrels in the School. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Book!!!!! Oh, yeah!
I loved this book because it was full of adventure! If you read it you will be truly thankful!!! It's about a girl, Mandy, who finds a dying sheepdog. She nurses it back to health and names her Tess but her parents won't let the dog stay after she's healed. It's their policy as vets. Mandy find's Tess a good home but soon there are attacks on the sheep she herds. Angry farmer's drive her off. I mean, she's a likely candidate, know one knows why this almost perfect, pure bread Border collie was abandoned. Could these attacks be the answer? The farmers are off to kill her when something happens...
You have to read to find out the ending, but it's really good! At city hall Mandy throws a sort of celebration with the pets of Wellford and their humans! I thought that was cool idea! The pictures are funny and vivid, and the style is truly that of Ben M. Baglio. That is why I rated it 5 stars!!!!

My son and I chanced upon the Animal Ark series at his elementary school's book fair. My son is 9 years old and reads above his grade level (4th), but it is hard to find chapter books that interest him. I was thrilled when he chose to read this book practically non-stop instead of spending so much time on the computer. An interesting story that includes appealing animals is perfect for readers his age. We bought 2 other books from this series at the book fair (he didn't stop reading until he finished them too), and I will be ordering many more for Christmas. ... Read more

I am doing a book review on the book Dolphin in the Deep by Ben M. Baglio. This book was both sad and exciting. The saddest part was when Bob, a dolphin, died. The most exciting part was when they set Bing, the other dolphin, free into the ocean. My favorite character is Mandy, because she loves to be around animals, and she cares for them. This is one of my favorite books. Ben M. Baglio is my favorite author as well.

This is one of my favorite animal ark books! It is about an owner who comes into the ark with an Old English sheep dog puppy that isn't responding. It turns out that the pup is deaf and cannot be a working dog. Then one day Mandy and James are having a dog wash and at the end of the day they find and old English sheep dog puppy supposedly abandoned in a water puddle. 4-0 out of 5 stars I think that it's a heartwarming story!
When I started reading the series of Animal Ark, I started to love them, because I love animals. I think that MAndy, the girl in the book, shows how most people should care for animals and what happens if you don't care for them. Mandy dedicates her life to animals, and I think that a lot of people should be more like Mandy. The book keeps my interest all the way, and also tells me how I should care for animals.

Have you ever been able to take care of an animal movie star? Well, Mandy does in Puppies in the Pantry, by Ben M. Baglio. This book is about Mandy getting to take care of a dog movie star. Mandy comes to the theater and finds out Charley, the movie star, ran away. She also thinks something is wrong with Jess, her aunt's dog. Mandy has to solve the problem of finding out what is wrong with Jess.

I like this book because there is a lot of action. I also like all the main characters because they do stuff that is really exciting, like taking care of wild animals.

I see the pictures in this story in my head. They are funny and sad. I learned you should never let your dog out in a thunderstorm. Book Description

"A wonderful book with stories that will warm your heart."-Jeffrey Moussaieff Masson, author of When Elephants Weep

Written in collaboration with the Tufts University School of Veterinary Medicine by a Boston Globe reporter and author who was granted rare access to their emergency ward, Animal ER takes us into the day-to-day drama of life on the front lines of veterinary medicine. In this premier animal facility, experts in the fields of surgery, internal medicine, cardiology, ophthalmology, and oncology provide care for patients of all shapes, sizes, and breeds. Here, operations using state-of-the-art technology go hand in hand with personal counseling for owners and pets in crisis.

From a pygmy hedgehog with mites to an elephant with an eye problem to the Dalmatian who must undergo disc surgery for his back . . . from the close calls to the split-second decisions that can save a life, Animal ER is a moving testament to the healing powers of love and medicine-and to the timeless bond between people and their pets.

5-0 out of 5 stars Biology Book Review
From an anorexic snake to a myopic kangaroo to a bloated akita, from the tricky diagnoses to the hopeless cases, this captivating paperback tells of the perilous situations that have occurred at Tufts University School of Veterinary Medicine. Is it really right to spend all this time and effort on animals when some people lack food, shelter, and proper medical care? The veterinarians who unveil their heart-warming and emotional stories in this 194-page book, Animal ER, by Vicki Croke (copyright-1999) show us that the world is meant to be shared by animals and humans.
Each chapter of this brilliant book displays and describes a different animal/pet and its unique problem. Biology plays a major part in this book because it's about the science of studying and curing living things. It exposes the drama of life in the emergency ward of a veterinary hospital, which is a biology-related occupation. The first chapter summarizes the atmosphere of the Intensive Care Unit at Tufts; it's sad and yet successful too. The next eleven chapters of Animal ER present various animals and their life-threatening problems. Some require complex surgical procedures, while others are solved by unexpected and simple means. The last chapter returns to the Intensive Care Unit and reveals what the animals teach the veterinarians. The main idea expressed at the closing of the book touched my soul as tears rose to the surface like a newly found spring. Vicki Croke wrote that the animals who are cared for seem to teach simple lessons about life. "Animals continue to surprise me with their patience, their level of tolerance, and their strength," Nishi says, "but most of all, with their ability to forgive" (194).
I would strongly recommend this brilliant book to my friends or those people who are thinking of going into the veterinary field of study. Since I've never had a pet, I cannot relate to the owners of these sick animals; however, I can see this book as a slice of a veterinarian's life. It captures the essence of the Intensive Care Unit during first examinations, x-rays, surgery, and post-operative care. It is clear to see, as they treat animals, that Nishi Dhupa, Dr. Mark Pokras, Dr. John Berg, and other staff members at Tufts have the "healing touch". So even though some people don't have their primary needs met like food, shelter, and clothing, animals have a right to our care and concern.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sad and Touching Stories
Animal ER is a marvelous book for anyone who has an interest in animals or the world of Vets. Most of this book showed how these vets work everyday, but it also touches on the emotional side of the proffession. Vets have to decide when to put an animal to sleep and when to give them extra treatment . They also have a responsibility to comfort the owners. Find out more about the world of the vet by reading this fantastic nonfiction.

1-0 out of 5 stars Guess I missed the boat? Very disappointed, unusually boring!
I'm very happily working in a pet profession, I just adore the vet & pet shows on animal planet (from popped out eyeballs, to beloved sick iguanas) , and I am a big sap for animal stories and moving stories of any kind. I guess I expected this to be more stories (happy and sad, but moving), maybe even like chicken-soup style but longer? I was very disappointed. The stories were often short (sometimes 1/2 a sentence) and few between. Lots of vet perspectives on life, and personal vet perspectives on the profession, and worldly views of everything. I was really bored. I kept reading hoping for the next story to come, but I ended up reading skipping more than 1/2 the book because after a while I just couldn't read the quotes from the vets & techs anymore, and the lists of things they teach the other techs, and their years of schooling and personal experiences (educational & interests - not animal stories) was redundant and boring for me. The medical descriptions were not detailed enough to be educational orinteresting, and were too detailed that they distracted from the emotionality of just telling a story. I still have 20 pages to go before I finish, and I can't even remember the last story I was actually moved by (it was somewhere in the first 30 pages. The book is organized by "topic", but it doesn't seem to really have any flow (it went from dogs & cats to much less interesting stories of wildlife & exotics - which are usually very interesting, but they left out all the emotions other than "we eventually had to put it asleep, that was really hard". A few times they didn't even list the end of the story, or what decision the owner made for treatment - I really hate that (what happened to the kangaroos eyen cancer???)!

I'd really like to give this book 2 or 3 stars at least, because they really tried. They talked to may vets, and plopped in tons of quotes and lists of things they "learned" (quoted) from them. But I just feel so disappointed (more every time I try to finish it) that I can't. I've been a lot more moved by the cat behavior books I purchased at the same time - more stories, more details on personal emotions, trial and error, and results, and much more follow up to the stories.

I have to say I did like it when they listed the estimated prices for things. Although they did this infrequently, just for expensive procedures that may be ineffective. Sorry - I might recommend this book for the current used rate of under $2 if the shipping wasn't $4.99, but I can't justify $12.00 + shipping.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderfully compassionate Author and Compelling stories
When my sister lost her beloved Great Dane, I mourned for her too. I'm a cat person, and this big black incredibly sweet baby was the first dog I ever loved. When I visited my sister last year and she showed me this book, explaining that the author had been there in the Tufts Vet ER with her when Azaria was brought in, I was amazed. I continued to be amazed as I saw my sister's very special love for my doggy-niece through the eyes of a total stranger. It would have been very easy to dismiss how painful losing a pet can be, very easy to miss the ties of love between a pet and her owner. My sister loved her dog, quirks and fears and vet bills and all. I loved her too. Thanks, Vicki. Your gentle presentation of their story is the finest tribute Zari could have had.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book, But Very Emotional
If you like watching Animal Planet, and especially if you like watching Emergency Vet or Wildlife Rescue, you will like this book. But be warned, it is very emotive. When an owl flies free after being critically injured, you want to jump up and dance. When a dog everyone thought would die goes happily home with his mistress, you will want to sing. When a bull very deftly proves he has not had enough anaesthetic, you will laugh. But when a beloved animal is too ill or in too much pain to be helped, and the staff have to gently put it down, you will cry and cry and cry.

I couldn't put it down, but I sniffled through the whole thing. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars "Kittens in the Kitchen"...The book of the century!!!
~This is a wonderful book... I thought that there were many trials and heartwarming parts in
this book! This book was the first book I read out of the series when I was 11 years old. After
starting this book I was hooked and I still read them every chance I get even today and I am 13!!

~This was a marvelous book about two kids, Mandy Hope and her best friend James Hunter...who
care for an abandoned mother cat. The cat, named Walton (after their school), ends up having her
kittens in Mr. William's (the school janitor) house. Mr. Williams gives Mandy and James one
week to get the kittens out of his house because he hates cats. Along the way, Mandy and James
make friends in this touching tale of the perseverance of life, promises, and trust!

5-0 out of 5 stars the book for cat lovers and owners
Animal Ark's Kittens in the Kitchen is the best book I have ever read. I have read Tabby in the Tub and that book got me started on the Animal Ark series. I want to read all the kitten books and all the dog books.
I can't wait to read my next Animal Ark book. I want to read the book called The Kitten Who Won First Prize. It sounds really good.
In the book a cat has kittens and Mandy and James have a week to for good homes for the kittens. I like the Animal Ark series because it is about animals and not people.
I give this series 5 stars all the way

5-0 out of 5 stars CUTE!!!!
I thought that this book was adorable. Perfect for cat lovers. It's about a girl named Mandy and she's trying to find a home for 4 little kittens with her friend James. The only problem is that she has to find homes for them within a week. So, she's trying to find four homes for four liitle kittens. If she doesn't do that Mr. Williams will deal with them himself. I thought this book was adorable and cute. I hope you will too!

4-0 out of 5 stars Kittens in the Kitchen
Mandy and her friend James find an abandoned mother cat in school. They decide to look after it and provide it a comfort place for giving birth to it¡¦s kittens. But they find that the cat has kittens in their school custodian¡¦s laundry basket. The custodian tells them to find new homes to the kittens within one week or else he will deal with it. Can they do so within a week?
This story is really interesting and it is easy to understand. I appreciate Mandy¡¦s sympathy, as we can see her willingness to look after and find new homes for the kittens. Although she finds lots of difficulties during the process, she never decides to give up. May be she thinks that she was very like the cat. Because they were both adopted. It¡¦s really touchable.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Stallion
STALLION IN THE STORM is an excellent book. Anyone who loves mystery and animals will love this book. I recommend readers should be ages 8 and up. Fantastic! Great! That's what I say about this book. Ben M. Baglio the author, has made two series that I've read some of, ANIMAL ARK and ANIMAL ARK HAUNTINGS. This is one of his ANIMAL ARK HAUNTINGS. This book is a type of ghost story, crossed with a mystery story. The setting is mostly Folan's Stables. Folan's Stables is in the country and is a racing horse stables with a yard for racing in. The main characters are Mandy and James. Mandy is an animal lover and can't stand animals in danger. James is an animal lover too, and to show it, he has a black Labrador retriver named Blackie because he's black. He also helps Mandy rescue animals in danger. Dr. Adam Hope is Mandy's dad, also a doctor at Animal Ark, and the temporary horse vet at Folan's Stables. In this book Folan's is having trouble. The horses are unsettled and get all jumpy at races. "She didn't even have a chance to run." This is what Mandy said when a horse didn't want to run a race. Could it be because of the mystery incident that happened at the stables? Or are the stables haunted? And why is the owner ignoring the stables? Find out by reading the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful
Mandy and her best friend James are very excited when Mandy's father promises to take them with him to visit Folan's Racing Stables, but when they get there they realize something is very wrong. Many of the jockey's that ride at Folan's think that Tibor, a stallion who died in a race is haunting the stables. It's now up to Mandy and James to find the truth and save Folan's.

This was a great first book to a wonderful series. I recommend this book to any fans of the Animal Ark or Animal Ark Pets book series. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A review for the best book ever!
Pup at the Palace is about Mandy and her parents taking a trip to London, and finding puppies that are lost.

I think you should read "Pup at the Palace" if you like animals. If you dread Labrador Retrievers, you probably don't want to read this book, but if you like Labs, this would be a really good choice. If you like love stories then this is not the story for you, but if surprise if your thing, then I recommend this book to you. If London is your place, then read this book! If you like dogs, horses, or any kind of animal, then this book just might be for you. If suspense if your game, then this is your book. If helping is your thing, then read this book! This book is for you if you like dogs. If you've got a name, and dogs are your game, then read this book.

This book is full of suspense. How did the puppies get across the terrible traffic? How did the puppies get lost? Why didn't the owner know about it till half an hour before she came for her puppies? Where did the last puppy get found? Find out the answers to all these questions when you read "Pup at the Palace".

3-0 out of 5 stars A little one sided
I wanted a book that discussed the ethics behind captive animals, however this book was decidedly one sided. While I generally agree with animal rights ethics, I wanted to learn more about the reasons TO keep animals captive, and this book did not furnish that side. In fact, I felt most of the submitting authors displayed a hostile tendancy. It is a decent book on the history of zoos, as long as you're only interested in seeing this subject from one perspective. It left me feeling defensive.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good material on history and future of zoos
This is an excellent resource for anyone interested in the history and future of zoos and animal parks, as well as offering an assessment of present day facilities. Pro and con essays on a variety of topics related to zoo management, aquisition of animals and captive breeding provide both sides of the controversial issue of maintaining animals in captivity. Slight bias toward the view of zoos as the only viable future situation for wildlife but still offers critical analysis of

    issues involved. ... Read more

I think that "Owl in the Office" is a very good and creative book. It is a great book for animal lovers like me. I have read three other Animal Ark books, but the best one I read was "Owl in the Office." Once I started to read it, I got so involved - I never wanted to stop reading, and I wanted the book to go on forever. After reading the book, I was very happy that Mandy Hope had put all of her heart into the work to save all the animals in need. I thought the book was so good that I leant it to a friend of mine. In the book, it shows how kind and sweet Mandy Hope is. It also shows how much she cares for animals. I think that other people should care for animals as much as her.I care for animals just as much. The book also tells you a lot of facts about owls and their young ones. I hope that after reading the book, people will pay more attention to animals and their young. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Not Spectacular ...
This book was pretty good, but it wasn't excactly the best book in the series. I mean, what are the chances that a stuck-up, rich girl wuold want a cute little backyard pony as opposed to a fancy, imported Warmblood show horse or something? Welsh ponies aren't very tall, (I know because one of our horses is a Welsh and he's tiny)and I can't picture someone like Susan Collins riding a little brown brown pony with her heels 3" below his barrel! Apart from this weird point, it was a charming story and I admire Mandy's dedication to Prince.

5-0 out of 5 stars A sick pony...
Mandy Hope loves animals and she knows a lot about them, too, since her parents are vets. She is sad when, Prince, a pony she knows is sold and even more sad when she finds out his new owner is Susan Collins, the most stuck snob in the whole school! Susan is entering Prince in a contest and Mandy realizes that Prince is ill and not fit to take part in the contest. Can she and James save Prince's life?
