When Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert of Green Gables, Prince Edward Island, send for a boy orphan to help them out at the farm, they are in no way prepared for the error that will change their lives. The mistake takes the shape of Anne Shirley, a redheaded 11-year-old girl who can talk anyone under the table. Fortunately, her sunny nature and quirky imagination quickly win over her reluctant foster parents. Anne's feisty spirit soon draws many friends--and much trouble--her way. Not a day goes by without some melodramatic new episode in the tragicomedy of her life. Early on, Anne declares her eternal antipathy for Gilbert Blythe, a classmate who commits the ultimate sin of mocking her hair color. Later, she accidentally dyes that same cursed hair green. Another time, in her haste to impress a new neighbor, she bakes a cake with liniment instead of vanilla.Lucy Maud Montgomery's series of books about Anne have remained classics since the early 20th century. Her portrayal of this feminine yet independent spirit has given generations of girls a strong female role model, while offering a taste of another, milder time in history. This lovely boxed gift collection comprises Anne of Green Gables, Anne of the Island, Anne of Avonlea, Anne of Windy Poplars, Anne's House of Dreams, Anne of Ingleside, Rainbow Valley, and Rilla of Ingleside. 5-0 out of 5 stars A Classic Story For All Ages
In our present world, there are so many silly, pointless books about violence and action heroes, books that lack sense and have neither morals nor character development. This story reflects a time when novels were about people just like you and me - people with the same problems, thoughts, and feelings as us.

Anne of Green Gables is a story where a young orphan is adopted by a family in Prince Edward Island, a beautiful area in Canada. The young optimistic girl's imagination often get her into trouble, which makes the book both humorous and enjoyable. The important point about her problems is that they are conflicts faced by many young girls in today's society, despite the fact that she "lived" over a century ago. The character development through the series is what truly makes this piece of literature a classic.

Finally, I would like to say that this is an ideal story for a mother and daughter to read together. This lovely book, full of laughs for all generations, has earned its five stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Book in Literary History
first of all, let me begin with I LOVE THIS BOOK! I have read this book more times than I can remember...easily more than a dozen...thus, I am going to set my mind to write a glowing review of it.

This book portrays a stunning sketch of Canadian History and Culture in the late 1800s to early 1900s. The character personalities are so real and so amazingly "human" that one cannot help but fall in love with them. You really get a taste of PEI in its glory.

This story is set in Avonlea, Prince Edward Island (Canada), a fictional settlement which is really Cavendish, Prince Edward Island, the place where Lucy Maud Montgomery, the author grew up.

The main character is Anne Shirley...and eleven year old, enigmatic, imaginative, sparkling, highly intelligent orphan who is sent to Green Gables, a farmhouse in Avonlea, under the impression that she was to be adopted by a pair of elderly siblings, Matthew and Marilla Cuthburt. But, apon arrival to Green Gables, Anne discovers that there had been a horrible mistake...the Cuthburts never wanted a girl...they wanted a boy who could do the chores and help Matthew with the farm. Anne was was in the "depths of dispair". Matthew, on the drive home from the train station had taken a great shine to Anne and had his heart set on keeping her, regardless of any mistake. Marilla, however, was not so easily enchanted. She agreed to let Anne stay at Green Gables on trial, to see if she would behave herself and lend a helpful hand to Marilla. After the trial, Anne is welcomed to Green Gables and flourishes under the love of the Cuthburts and all Avonlea folk. Anne, however, has one big problem. Her Hair. It is a hopeless shade of carrotty red and Anne felt that it was the ugliest hair anyone could imagine. She was extremely sensitive about it and she was horribly embarrassed about it. On her first day of school, Anne's hair was made fun of by Gilbert Blythe, the smartest and handsomest boy in school. "Carrots! Carrots!" he said. Anne's temper got the better of her and she was so angry she broke a slate over his head. After that, for many years, she snubbed Gilbert every time he spoke to her and he developed a boyhood crush on her.

Ah, but to keep this review interesting and the book mysterious, I will stop telling you the story and begin reviewing. The characters in the book are so well-defined that it seems to you that you know every character personally, like an old friend or neighbour.

And by all means, don't let the age recommendation fool you either...this book can be read by all ages alike...and I have no doubt that this book will still be my avid favorite at the age of 85.

The book is not boring, contrary to many opinions of those who read the first chapter of small print and historical settings. The discriptions will place you right into the heart of the story and you find you will laugh and cry while reading this story. Every time I read it I cry at a certain part which I'm not sure if I should reveal to you for fear of spoiling the good parts in the story, but it is dreadfully sad. If you read the book, then you will know what part I am talking about. The one saddest part in the whole story.

Although this book has some old ideas and ways of expressing them, you will learn a great deal of Canadian history through them and there's no doubt in my mind that this book will still be popular decades and most likely even centuries to come.

5-0 out of 5 stars One word - Classic!
The Anne of Green Gables series is a wonderful and grand masterpiece. I would give it more stars if I could.

L.M. Montgomery wrote some of the most memorial works in children's literature. Anne of Green Gables was an instant hit, and still is today.

The eight books all follow the story of Anne Shirley, a red headed, smart and imagnative Canadian girl who was an orphan all her life. When she enters Marilla and Matthew Cuthberts' life, she changes not only them, but all of Avonlea.

I really enjoyed the third one, Anne of the Island. Anne really grows up in that novel. It really showed a difference in the next novels to come.

In the last one, Rilla of Ingleside, it seemes like it was most narrated by Anne's daughter, Rilla, rather than Anne herself. The feelings and plaots were mostly seen threw Rilla's eyes. It was quite a diffference from the normality of Anne's feelings.

I would recomend these books any day. It shows that the twentieth century novel can be a classic. Anne of Green Gables is a story no one should go without reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book I have ever read in my life!!!!!
The book Anne of Green Gables is a great book for all ages. Although it is a bit lengthy, there is ALWAYS something happening on each page. If you take the time to read it, this is really a worthwhile book. The story is about a young orphan girl who is accidentally adopted by the Culberts, who had wanted a boy instead of a girl . Anne gets into all sorts of trouble soon, like jumping onto beds, (with people sleeping in them) and dying her hair green! Although Anne was an "accident", the Culberts would never forget life without her. If you are an adventure-loving person, you should definitely read this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Comfort Book
Encountering Anne and her magical world at the age of 11, I have never quite escaped Avonlea and the wonderful characters concocted by L.M. Montgomery. Montgomery takes to heart the advice given to Anne in Anne of the Island to write about the simple things in life, and she does so beautifully. Reading one of the'Anne' book is like coming home - no matter where you're from. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Anne of Green Gables
"I'll try and do anything and be anything you want if only you'll keep me." This is how "Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery begins.
Anne Shirley is a twelve-year-old girl who is brought to Green Gables only to find they were expecting a boy. The Cuthberts however, are one over by this queer, imaginative girl with bright, red hair and decide to allow her to stay.
Green Gables is a lovely, little farm just outside of a small town on Prince Edward Island called Avonlea. It is surrounded by fields and forests, which hold many surprises for adventurous Anne.
Throughout this book Anne's fierce temper and wild imagination often get the better of her, but she usually manages to squeeze out of these scrapes.
Anne's melodramatic nature and fiery temper keeps you interested as you read this marvelous book.
Montgomery's humorous writing style gives life to the characters so that you feel like you are meeting them in person.
I think that this was a wonderful book filled with humor, drama and tears. I would recommend this book to anyone that has ever had a dream and loves a good book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Review of Anne of Green Gables
'People who haven't red hair don't know what trouble is. Mrs. Thomas told me that God made my hair red on purpose, and I've never cared about Him since.'

Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery

Upon arriving at the Cuthbert's home on Prince Edward Island, Anne Shirley, a vivacious and imaginative young orphan girl, was devastated to hear that she was a mistake. The Cuthbert's had wanted a boy. Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert, an elderly brother and sister, decide to keep her, and from that moment nothing is the same.
Cracking a slate across a boy's head, getting her best friend drunk (accidentally of course), saving a baby's life, and nearly drowning herself are all part of Anne's daily life. Marilla and the neighbors couldn't help but express their disappointment with the little newcomer'at first. To most she knows, Anne becomes an irreplaceable addition to sleepy Avonlea. Anne is changing too. Gradually she becomes more mature and learns to control her sometimes fiery temper.
Anne of Green Gables is unpredictable and hilarious; you can never tell what Anne will do next! I loved her endless questions about the world, and her passionate love of life. Anne Shirley is one of the most enjoyable characters I have ever read about, therefore, I would recommend this book to anyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars the most original child-heroine in literature
Mark Twain called Anne "the most delightful child heroine since the Immortal Alice [in Wonderland]." This story of the impulsive but lovable orphan girl Anne Shirley who wins the hearts of all and finds a loving family and community is one of the most heart-warming and enchanting stories ever written, with many millions of readers world-wide testifying to this fact.

Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert are an elderly brother and sister living together at Green Gables. They're getting on in years and they want to adopt a boy to help them run the farm, but instead by mistake a girl is sent them. Matthew is charmed by Anne from the start and wants to keep her, but Marilla is a stern and stubborn woman on the outside and at first she wants to send Anne back. Little by little, however, she too starts to fall under the spell of that spunky, charming, amusing, irrepressible redhead Anne, and they end up keeping her. The rest of the novel is rife with funny incidents of Anne getting herself into and out of trouble, and you will be amused and tickled to no end. Watch the movie too. Highly Recommended!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars One of the better books
This has always been my favorite Anne book, even though it focuses more on her youngest child. The realism in this book is more pronounced than it is in the rest of the series, where I always felt somewhat in dreamland with Anne. Rilla is a heck of a lot more practical than her mother, and seeing the world and some truly horrible events through her eyes is a big change from the rest of the books. At least there is less talking to fairies and violets and such.

Since this is the last book, you are left to wonder what happens to Rilla and Ken, along with the rest of the cast. Knowing now what I know about history, I can't help but hope that WWII doesn't take quite the same toll on these fictional characters as the First World War did.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rilla-my-Rilla
Since Anne what not as much of a main character in this book, I was surprised by how much I liked it. I didn't think I would because she was not in it. However, I now think, that it is one of the best books in the series.( Since I can't choose just one book, thats the highest compliment I can give.) In the beginning Rilla a frivolous, nonambitious girl who only wants the most fun life can give her. She knows nothing of the sorrows or horrors of life, beyond her worries of who she'll dance with...This book tells the story of Rilla's life during the horrrible, "war to end all wars". During this time, faced with pain, sorrow, and duty she proves herself as a true woman and worthy of her handsome Kenneth Ford.

5-0 out of 5 stars i'm lovin it
hi every1 my name is joanna neves and i love this book it just seemed so real. Rilla is such a cool name! Some people might think thatit is wrong to blame Germany for the war but the opinions of the characters are true to how people did feel in wartime. I love a book that makes you cry and laugh. This one plays on your emotions and is well worth reading.

2-0 out of 5 stars Overly Sentimental Piece of Patriotic Propaganda
(...)

I found this novel unbelievably trite and packed with propaganda- about how awful Germany was, how righteous Canada/England/Europe was, etc. The truth is that WWI came about by a series of dipomatic missteps- and unfortunate ones. Germany may have been 'more wrong' than England, but it was certainly not the great evil that L.M. Montgomery portrays it as.

The book IS useful to a historian or student of history who wishes to see how World War II affected those on the 'home front' in day to day life. It is also useful for the numerous little details LM Montgomery is a expert at supplying- the way food was prepared, the way children were raised- the way girls 'came of age' and had their debut at age 17 or so. It provides a tantalizing glimpse into a much simpler and vanished world, one where life did seem much more black and white. Now we know that war is not such a matter of good vs. evil- there are two sides to every story. World War II was a direct result of the conditions inflicted upon Germany after World War I- if only LM Mongomery could have known.

5-0 out of 5 stars Saving the Best for Last
I am unahamedly a devoted fan of all the Anne of Green Gables books. I can read each of them over and over again without feeling uniterested. In the final installment of the Anne books, we meet her youngest daughter, Rilla, who is a very normal fifteen year old girl, without caring for much of anything at all.
I am a huge history buff and love to have it woven into a story, so I love this book. The first chapter has Susan going over the newspaper, reading about some Arch Duke being killed. No one though anything of it, and that action tore their world apart.
Rilla's oldest brother, Jem, joins up immediatley as does Jerry, Nan's boyfriend. Rilla's favorite brother, and possibly the deepest character in all of Annedom, Walter, seems to understand the real horror of war and is terrified. He waits to join up,but when he does, he isn't afraid any more.
This book shows us how Rilla grows from a frivolous child into a capable woman who survives raising an orphan, falling in love and loosing one brother, possibly more in the most gruesome war that had ever happened to date.
It is very easy to relate to Rilla, and I must suggest this book as a must read to anyone and everyone. ... Read more

The spirited redhead returns in this heartwarming sequel to Anne of Green Gables. Now she's the schoolma'am in the same place where she was a student, and not much older than her pupils. Anne's determination to win the respect and affection of her students, along with her ongoing search for kindred spirits and her attempts to beautify Avonlea with the village improvement society, provide the same "scope for imagination" that made this book's predecessor a treasure for young readers.

3-0 out of 5 stars A good classic
LM Montgomery had a great ability to write stories that made us laugh, cry, and tug at our heart strings. Both Anne of Green Gables and Anne of Avonlea are books i bought, and will give to my children to read when they are old enough to appreciate them.
I never read them as a child. I wasn't even introduced to them until I was planning a vacation to Prince Edward Island three years ago, and I read the first book. I also watched the movies which were both such wonderful adaptations.
Anne of Avonlea picks up where the first one left off. Anne, who I think is the best female fictional character I've ever had the priviledge to read of, is now a teacher. She is growing up, but she still has her adventures with Diana, and her other friends.
There are a few new characters are introduced, and although you don't instantly fall in love with them like Ann, they grow you. All but Davey, this character was just so annoying. THis boy was just a bad apple.
I'm sure LM had good intentions, but I was utterly annoyed and it brought my feeling of the book down a bit.
IF you loved the first book, you will probably enjoy this as well. There is a long series of books by LM. I am currently on break from reading her.
She was a great writer, able to bring a great deal of sense of humor in her storytelling, and she is very descriptive. She really brings the characters so true to life, especially Anne.
I do recommend this despite my problem w/ davey.
Anne will always remain forever in my heart as a true heroine of classic literature. One of the best character to ever be put on paper..as she is kind, funny, good spirited, and what an imagination!

5-0 out of 5 stars Anne Shirley becomes the teacher at Avonlea School
After the great success of "Anne of Green Gables," Lucy Maud Montgomery had to quickly write a sequel to continue the misadventures of the mischievous red-headed orphan on Prince Edward Island. Since the original classic was not intended to be the first in a series, Montgomery had to make some changes. The one that will drive you crazy is that Anne is back to being oblivious about Gilbert Blythe being the love of her life and her perfect match. The other thing that becomes obvious is that Montgomery is somewhat uncomfortable with Anne growing up, even though she is only "half-past sixteen," as evidenced by the infusion of new children into the story because Anne is now teaching at Avonlea school and Marilla has adopted the irrepressible Keith twins, Davy and Dora. You can also throw into the mix the mysterious new neighbor with his parrot and (my favorite part) the eccentric Miss Lavendar who has been waiting a quarter of a century for her beloved Stephen Irving to return to her. Along with "Anne of Windy Poplars," this book is a testament to Montgomery's respect for the teaching profession; the book is dedicated to her former teacher, Hattie Gordon Smith. While this is not one of my favorite Anne novels, it is still a worthy successor to the classic story. However, be warned: If you watch either of the "Anne of Avonlea" movies you will that virtually nothing from this novel ever made it to film.

4-0 out of 5 stars A bit of a disappointment
If I could have, I would rate this book a three star one. But I had to rate it higher, just because it's an L.M Montgomery book, and an Anne one.
This book features a few new characters, one of them is a queer, bad-tempered bald man, called Mr. Harrison. Anne and her friends also start a club to improve the community, although some parts are interesting, this bores me a bit.
Gilbert is not shown a lot in the book, and when he is, it's usually for a few moments or for A.V.I.S, the club. Same with Diana.
You will find that this book is true to it's title, it focuses A LOT on the Avonlea school. Most of the book is about the children, one dreamy boy in particular.
Marilla and Anne also adopt two twins, a troublesome, yet lovable boy Davy, and the prim, unemotional Dora. They have a lot in the book.
Oh, and Anne meets a new kindred spirit, Miss Lavender, the spinster in the cozy cottage. Anne reunites Miss Lavender with her old, old sweetheart. And Miss Lavender gets married to him. This was sweet, but somewhat dull. At the very end of the book, Gilbert does give a hint to Anne, about how he feels about her.
Overall, this book was mostly disappointments, although I would highly recommend reading it. If you expect to be about Anne getting into interesting scrapes, Gilbert being romantic about Anne, and seeing Anne's old chums a lot, than stop expecting. But as I said, I would still suggest this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Unanticipated Anne Shirley Back In Action!
Red haired with a flaming temper, the phenomenal Anne Shirley is back in her 2nd book! Marilla, a kindly old maid who had set heart on bringing Anne up (when she was an orphan) has decided to also adopt two adorable little twins, Davy and Dora Keith. Anne is absolutely thrilled but adopting these twins causes big trouble. Davy is really a good boy at heart but always finds himself into scrapes: like making his sister Dora walk the pig fence! Davy¡¦s idea of fun includes violence and humor ¡V but only for himself. The girls have to teach Davy manners, which is a difficult task for such a cheeky little boy. Anne¡¦s problems grow even more as she takes up responsibility of being a schoolteacher and suddenly feels very timid again, but she has to pull up her socks and jerk herself back into the adult world. At school, she regains her impertinence temper and broad imaginations as she shares happy times with her students, especially Paul Irving, this sweet little kid with brown hair and the most delightful face she has ever seen. He brings her flowers and calls her ¡§Sweet Teacher¡¨. Her friendship with striking Gilbert Blythe (ex-enemy for calling her hair ¡§carrots¡¨) has grown, but what is Gilberts real reason of being so sweet and pleasant? Has Diana (her bosom friend) finally grown up? I really enjoyed this book because it talks about Anne growing up and finding her place in the adult world leaving her wonderful childhood behind forever. I simply couldn¡¦t put it down because after every page, Anne has another adventure so it is like a cliffhanger. My mom keeps telling me to go and do work but I cannot stop because this is the most wonderful book ever written. I like the others in this series also.Thank you L.M. Montgomery for bringing a bright light into my life!~~ Referring to the special collectors edition

I gave this book to a friend (25 yrs old at the time) and she loves it. We are both huge Anne Shirley fans and actually L.M. Montgomery fans too. This is a very sweet book that provides you with memories of some of Anne's memorable moments and adventures.

4-0 out of 5 stars For the True Anne Lover
I bought this book for a friend, but before I gave it to her I poured over it. It is adorable and a great book for True Anne Lovers... and not just for kids! I made the raspberry cordial and it is simply delicous. This book brings back memories of Anne's adventures and important events in her life. You will enjoy this book if you are an Anne fan or if you are a cook... you will LOVE this book if you are an Anne fan AND a cook!

4-0 out of 5 stars A must for those who love Green Gables and cannot cook!
I bought this book to the ridicule of family and boyfriend but now they're the one's who can't wait for me to make the recipes included! The saucy chicken was a hit with my mum as was the caramel sauce with everyone. Other recipies include raspberry cordial, shortbread (came out yummy), icecream and chocolate caramels. I can't cook to save my life but these recipies are a doddle, even when I messed up the traditional lemonade it still tasted great.

5-0 out of 5 stars Delightful cookbook, just like the books!
This cookbook will soon become a little girl's treasure. Illustrations are abound in this book, they include the characters that are in the Anne of Green Gables Cookbooks. You can easily see Anne and Diana preparing whats in this cookbook. The recipes are simple, easy to follow, and will come out well. Diana's Cordials are simply heavenly. This is a definately must have for any Anne of Green Gables fan.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful tool for aspiring "chefs."
Cooking is one of my favorite hobbies. I rarely ever use a cookbook, but this one is the "exception to the rule." I have used several recipes from this book. Everyone especially loves the "Old-fashioned Lemonade!"

The young girls that I have introduced to "Anne" and the cookbook - absolutely love it! The cookbook is a wonderful tool for aspiring "chefs." It is delightfully illustrated and written by L.M.'s grand daughter - who happens to be a licensed home economist! What could be better? ... Read more

Book Description

Since its publication in 1908, Anne of Green Gables has been a continuous international best-seller, enjoying successful television adaptations on PBS and The Disney Channel, and captivating children and adults alike with the irresistible charms of its remarkable heroine, Anne Shirley. This wildly imaginative, red-headed chatterbox tries to fit into the narrow confines of Victorian expectations, but her exuberant spirit keeps leaping delightfully beyond the bounds. Indeed, when Maud Montgomery decided to reject the sermonizing formulas of the children's books of her day, she brought to life a character much closer to Jane Eyre, David Copperfield, and Tom Sawyer--also orphans, like Anne--than to the self-sacrificing, conformist heroines then in demand. In doing so, Montgomery subtly questioned the values of her society--the stifling restraints of its religion and most especially its treatment of women--while giving readers all the pleasures of her considerable story-telling gifts.

Now, in this first fully annotated edition of Anne of Green Gables, readers will appreciate more clearly than ever before the scope and depth of this extraordinary novel. Editors Margaret Anne Doody, Mary DoodyJones, and Wendy Barry provide a richly illustrated, completely revised text, along with hundreds of notes describing the real-life characters and settings Anne encounters, the autobiographical connections between Anne and Maud Montgomery, and the book's astonishing range of literary, biblical, and mythological references. Additional essays offer fascinating background information on such topics as the geography and settlement of Prince Edward Island (where Anne takes place); the education, orphanages, music, and literature of Anne's time; and the horticulture, homemade artifacts, and food preparation that are so prevalent in the story.Margaret Anne Doody supplies a comprehensive introduction, which situates the novel in its literary and social contexts, explores those aspects of Montgomery's life most relevant to the story, examines revisions in the manuscripts, and provides an overall sense of both the impulses that drove Montgomery to write Anne of Green Gables and the larger concerns it dramatizes so compellingly. This edition also contains a chronology of Montgomery's life, an extensive bibliography, songs and poems that appear in the text, and a selection of original reviews of the book. This wealth of material enables readers to grasp the marvelous multi-layeredness of the novel and to understand more fully its place in both its own time and in ours.

Elegantly and beautifully designed, with generous illustrations from previous editions, photographs of the places the novel inhabits, and explanatory drawings that reproduce the texture of Anne's world, The Annotated Anne of Green Gables is a major event in the publishing history of one of the world's most charming stories. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars THE version of "Anne" you want to read before visiting PEI
While packing away all of my Anne of Green Gables books for a trip to Prince Edward Island, I could not find my paperback copies of the first novel. Since I was not about to take my original 6th edition hardcover copy I went to the library to pick up "Anne of Green Gables," and I stumbled upon the Annotated Anne. I lucked out big time. This volume footnotes almost every literary reference and allusion (there are a few that have stilled escaped detection), along with all the people and places. Appendixes present songs mentioned in the book, along with the music, as well as stories and poems, the geography of the story, and lots of other fascinating details. These books is ideal for not only those who want an additional level of understanding to this beloved classic as they reread it (again), but is extremely useful if you happen to be coming out to PEI to visit the "actual" locations. This book will tell you where to find the real Lovers Lane, Lake of Shinning Waters, and other places from the novel as well as places important in the life of L. M. Montgomery. I realize that if you are looking this book over there is a very good chance you already have a copy of "Anne of Green Gables." But you are going to want to have this one as well. I bought my own copy at the Cavendish site, where, as I learned from this book, is where Montgomery wrote the first two Anne books. This is a special edition of a very special story.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Magnificent Book
The introduction and textual notes provide insight into Anne's world. They also give a feel for how well read L.M. Montgomery was. The story is treated respectfuly, and for those who love Anne, one reading will not be enough

5-0 out of 5 stars Everything Anne
This is one of the most outstanding annotated editions of a book I have ever seen. It is packed with interesting, relevant annotations about the world of Anne of Green Gables, as well as LM Montgomery's own life and Prince Edward Island itself.

Due to the nature of the writing in Anne of Green Gables, an annotated edition is especially welcome to fill in the blanks on Canadian politics (What is a "grit?") and social conventions at the time. Reading the annotations increases the pleasure of entering the Anne's world, and that is incredibly important.

Also, of special note and appreciation, many of Anne's favorite obscure poems and readers are included in the back. Finally, you are able to get the whole version of the many quotes that she drops, and see just where she picked up her big words.

The best gift you could get for a true fan of Anne of Green Gables.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great reference for fans of Anne
I only wish that all of L.M. Montgomery's books were available annotated because she made so many references (literary, political, historical) that seem almost impossible to research these days. I knew I didn't understand many of the references in the book already, but I didn't realize just how many more I only thought I understood!

The editors have thoroughly researched the life and times of L.M. Montgomery. After reading the appendixes in this book I feel much more knowledgeable about L.M. Montgomery, Prince Edward Island and the life of a young girl in a Victorian Canadian villiage.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lots of fun facts-on LMM and Anne!
This book provides excellent background information concerning Montgomery's life and influences. It is nicely arranged and easy to skim through. At long last, Anne fans have a thorough source for the many literary allusions and colloquial terms skattered throughout the book. It is well worth reading, but unless you are an avid LMM fan, I would just check it out of your local library. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Every Girl Needs a Dream
My mother first bought me Anne of Green Gables and Anne of Avonlea when I was 12. I fell immediately in love with the books, and begged her to buy me the rest. And slowly, bit by bit, my collection of books grew. The main character, Anne, though having lived in the late 19th century, is so wonderful, that I felt a kinship with her. I not only own the complete collection of books, but both of the movies too. Recently, they made a new movie, but I wasn't able to get into. It so varied from the origional books (Colleen Dewhurst is dead, and so they had to rearrange things), that I couldn't watch but 10 minutes of it without getting upset (I pointed out 15 different mistakes). But, I still love the original stories. My book collection of the Anne stories has made 5 moves with me (in 9 years) and are becomming so worn that soon, I will have to buy a new collection. I still read them, you see. I turn 22 soon and have a husband and toddler son. You just don't outgrow them. And they are perfect for any woman or girl, of any age.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dreamer Always
I was first introduced to Anne when I was in 3rd grade, by my teacher Ms.Wellberg. She had read the Anne of Geen Gables novels and picked out the videos to show us during our free time. My class was fascinated by this imaginative, red head girl. I just fell in love with her when I saw it. I had dreamed to grow up just like this girl, Anne. Though I was very young and small, I loved to read and I had a big imagination. Now I am in sixth grade and still in love with the novels. I have not yet read the whole series because it's hard to find the books and because I have too many books already, my parents are refusing to by me more, but I just love to read this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great!
I read this book in a Reading class at school and I loved it! It really has a great and humorous plot to it. I'm still reading the
comtinuing series. Anne, an eleven year old with carrot-red hair and freckles is taken to live with the Cuthberts on Prince Edward Island. The Cuthberts are expecting a boy, and there is just something about Anne that makes Marilla Cuthbert want to take her back from the start...

3-0 out of 5 stars Montgomery¿s Anne of Green Gables
How would you feel if you were not wanted because you weren't a boy? In this book, Anne of Green Gables, by Lucy Maud Montgomery you will read how Anne felt.
Anne is an orphan who was brought to Green Gables by the Cuthberts who wanted a boy actually. They wanted to take her back at the start but decide to keep her. The Cuthberts decided to take her to school. At school she meets a boy called Gilbert. She doesn't like him and tries to beat him at everything. She also hits Gilbert over his head with a slate because he called her "Carrots". She also meets a girl called Diana and they become best friends.
She also has a big imagination which gets her in trouble. For instance one time Anne gave Diana wine instead of cordial. This got Diana drunk so Anne wasn't allowed to talk with her best friend anymore. One time though Diana's sister, Minnie May, gets croup and Anne saves her life. So Diana and Anne are allowed to talk to each other again. The book is about how Anne gets herself in and out of trouble. At the end Anne wins a scholarship and becomes friends with Gilbert.
I think that this is a good book for middle school girls because it is about a girl their age. Teachers could read this book to their class because it is fun to read aloud. I think this was an ok book but I like adventure books more.

4-0 out of 5 stars Anne of Green Gales is the best book
This book Anne of Green Gables was one of the best books i've read in a long time. it kept my attention very well. And for me that's hard to do. Their were some many great details described. Whenever Anne describes everywhere she goes I can just imagine it in my head. I can also relate to Anne because she goes to places she's never been before and has to meet new people. This book took so many diffrent aspects on life from death of Matthew to making new friends like Diana, and speaking your mind and having it get you into trouble.Which everyone has done before in their life at one point in time.I also took a like to this book because it talked about her realationship with boys. She isnt one for being nice to them but later on she gets to trusting them more.I didnt like everything about this book, i would have to say the down fall for me was that the book didnt spend to much time on the other characters.I would have liked to known a little bit more about them. I would have to say overall this book was very well written, i think it could be for all ages, speaking from Merillas point of view and of course Annes as well.Even though the book is written in the "olden" times almost everyone can relate to the book in one way or another. So i would definatly recommened it to everyone i know. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars This book is one of my favourites!
This book is great! You need to have read all of the Anne of Green Gables books to understand it. Its about Annes cheeky children who meet the new vicars children. The vicars kids are very naughty and their father is in his own little world most of the time, and doesn't spend much time with them. Annes kids really like them and have adventures with them. The vicars kids also have a runaway orphan who lives with them. She is very outgoing and seems quite common. The children don't know what to make of her at first, but she soon becomes their friend. This is my favourite book out of the Anne series I and would reccomend it to anyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars AS GOOD AND ENCHANTING AS OTHER 'ANNE' BOOKS
I don't quite like Anne of Ingleside as I always want to know more about Anne but Montgomery just focused on Anne's children in the book. However,Rainbow Valley turned out to be completely different. It is as funny, delightful as other novels in the Anne series. Now, I love Anne's children and the manse children very much. But I don't like Mary Vance, she just seemed to be wicked though I know she was actually not, she was just brutally frank. The adventures of the children were as exciting as Anne's.They were all nice little souls. They were angels and to be loved by every one in the world. After reading Anne, I am now looking forward to having the chance to play in graveyards. They are no longer dreadful but beautiful places which bring you much joy and fun as soon as you finish Rainbow Valley. Lastly I think Anne Shirley is Anne Shirley. I can never accept Mrs. Doctor dear or Anne Blythe.

2-0 out of 5 stars Where are you Anne?!?!?!?
This book was so void of Anne or even her children, it made you depressed to read it. The story of the Merediths was intresting, but i think they should perhaps have their own story and not take up a whole book of Anne's. It's even harder to find Gilbert, there is NO romance between them at all in this book. This is by far my least favorite Anne book. Bottom line: good book in its self but she should have just cut Anne out of it and started a new series.

5-0 out of 5 stars An atypical "Anne" book but one of Montgomery's best
I really think the only reason not to find "Rainbow Valley" one of L. M. Montgomery's better novels in the Anne series is because it obviously has the least to do with Anne or her children. This one is really more about the four Meredith children who belong to Ingleside's new widowed minister, so I can see where some readers would be less than pleased with the direction. But the ending of this novel, where Una Meredith communes with her mother's wedding dress before going off to get her father a wife, is as touching as anything Montgomery ever wrote. All in all, "Rainbow Valley" reminds me more of "The Story Girl" and "The Golden Road" than any of the other Anne books, with the Meredith children having a series of humorous misadventures. I am also impressed because as you can tell from the ending when Walter Blythe speaks of "The Piper," that Montgomery is already committed to writing about what happens to these children during World War I in her next Anne book, "Rilla of Ingleside." Even though it is atypical "Rainbow Valley" is my second favorite book in the Anne series and I am the proud owner of a first edition copy.

3-0 out of 5 stars The least interesting book of the series...
This book is mostly about the 3 children who had moved into the manse. Even though they are very "different" and interesting kids, I don't find them interesting, unlike Anne was when she was younger. I've seen a review which compares Faith to Anne - in their ways of getting into all sorts of unpredictable and unexpected trouble, imaginations, and making up all sorts of original excuses... But I felt Faith lacked Anne's fire and zest and didn't impress me at all.

This books is drifting apart from the series' main character - Anne. She is a small, supporting character in this book , and the closest we get to hearing about her are a few small stories about her kids... Which is my main reason for feeling this book should not belong in the Anne series... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Anne of the Island
This is my absolute favorite book in the whole entire world. It is the best out of the whole entire series! I have read and re-read it so many times, I know it practically by heart. The book is about Anne's four years at Redmond college with the introduction of Patty's Place featuring beloved characters from previous books including Gilbert Blythe, Priscilla Grant, goggle-eyed Charlie, the grown-up Diana, Ruby Gillis, Stella Maynard, the critical Mrs. Lynde, Marilla and of course the twins, Dora and Davy who just always happens to run into trouble. Many new friends emerge such as the unfogettable Phil (short for Phillipa) who can't dream of marrying a man who isn't rich, romantic Roy Gardener and the sweet Anut Jamesina. The book also includes the publishing of one of Anne's stories. It is definetly worth reading at least once.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful story-great for Girls&Women
Anne of the Island is the third novel in the Anne of Green Gables series. The story was ver predictable at times, but was extremely addictive. I felt like I was right there besides Anne, and almost cried at some parts because I felt so attached to her! Throughout this book, along with the others, Anne is growing up and noticeably changing as the story progresses.
After spending a few years teaching at the Avonlea School, Anne leaves her beloved Avonlea and Prince Edward Island to attend Redmond College in Kingsport. Attending Redmond with Anne would be her old friends Gilbert Blythe, Charlie Sloan, and Priscilla. Anne and Priscilla soon meet another girl, who they find talkative and funny.
During her college years, Anne received a few marriage proposals from very unexpected men. She met her "Prince Charming" one day out in the rain, but realized that she could not marry him when it was almost too late. Confused, Anne almost entirely gave up hope about marrying anybody.
While back in her beloved Avonlea for the summer, Anne reveals her true feelings for a dear friend before she loses him forever. The happy couple end up planning their life together.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Book of Revelation as Love Takes Up the Glass of Time
"Anne of the Island" is the third of Lucy Maud Montgomery's Anne of Green Gables novels, and completes what we can see as being a trilogy simply becomes Anne finally realizes what everybody in Avonlea has known from early in the first book, which is that Anne Shirley and Gilbert Blythe were made for each other. Having spent time as the teacher at the Avonlea Schools in "Anne of Avonlea," the Anne girl leaves Prince Edward Island for four years of college (hence, she is now "Anne of the Island"). The theme of this story is Anne dealing with "How horrible it is that people have to grow up," as she confronts how her whole world is changing.

Ironically, what makes "Anne of the Island" so romantic is the way it challenges romanticism. Even as a young woman Anne creates a romantic fantasy around the world in which she lives, just like she did at Green Gables where there was the old Snow Queen at the window, the Dryad's Bubble, the Haunted Wood, Lover's Lane and all those "dear spots where memories of the old years bided." Now Anne and Priscilla, her school chum from Redmond, are renting rooms in Patty's Place, and making the home of Miss Patty and Miss Maria into their own. Meanwhile, after a thousand romantic drams and enduring both Diana Barry's wedding and the rejection of Gilbert Blythe's proposal (her second actually), Anne finally meets her Prince Charming, Royal Gardner.

He is handsome and rich, in short, everything that Anne ever dreamed that she wanted in a husband. Then comes the fateful moment when Roy proposes and Anne opens her lips to say her faithful yes. But this is but a false dawn in Anne's life and there is a fateful Book of Revelation that Anne has to endure before love takes up the glass of time. There is romanticism and then there is that which is romantic and Montgomery shows the difference. There is a reason that this character and these books are enduring classics of (supposedly) juvenille literature.

As usual this book is also filled with interesting and colorful characters, such as young Paul and the Rock People, John Douglas who finally speaks at last, and Anne's friend Phillippa Gordon, who also has her eyes opened to the what true love really means. For those who are familiar with the delightful Kevin Sullivan "Anne of Avonlea" sequel there is also the whole episode of "Averil's Atonement" as well as the entire end game with Gilbert. That is the most important part because at long last the final line of Montgomery's original "Anne of Green Gables" novel rings true for our Anne girl.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Anne Book!
This Anne book is my favorite one of the series. Anne's romances make the story so spellbinding. All throughout the book, I was hoping Anne would wind up with Gilbert. Her romance with Roy adds a twist to the story. All of the Anne books are wonderful but this one holds a special place in my heart.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just As Wonderful As The First Two!
In this third volume of Anne Shirley's life, Anne goes off to college, gets a marriage proposal, and loses a friend. With everything that happened to her while at college, I just couldn't put it down. Anne is growing up and having to deal with the trials of being a young adult. Anne has problems of love and I couldn't stop reading until I found out what happened. Montgomery does a great job with this sequel and I can't wait to read the next! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Going Downhill
Lucy Montgomery can't seem to write convincing men, and only does marginally better with women. The quality of this series has really gone downhill since Anne was a girl, or even a young woman. Now that she has children, the book no longer focuses on her, which was really the main reason the books seemed to come alive in the beginning. Now, they drag on and on. I found myself having to skim large sections simply because nothing happens. One of the longest chapters is a quilting circle's gossip- and that's it. And it's not even gossip about characters we know or care about! A genius to the early books was that Anne either had many problems, or believed she did, and we could join in the child's angst about life. But now Anne has the ideal life she has always wanted. And there is no conflict. And hence, much of this book is simply boring. There are times when things pick up- like when her children get into trouble. We start to see something similar to the adventures of the Anne we knew. But each issue is quickly resolved within a chapter, and nothing encourages you to go on to the next pericope. There is some hope when Anne starts to dabble with match-making, but this is quickly ended before it could get very interesting. Aunt Mary Maria is a pill of a woman, and she makes for some very interesting reading- but then she leaves after the first quarter of the book, never to be seen again, and with everything unresolved.

When Lucy writes of Anne's son, Jem, there is something missing. He doesn't seem like a boy somehow- or else not like a real human. And I realized that this is further developed in Lucy's treatment of Gilbert, who seems to be amazingly absent in these later books. There is no great undying love between her and Gilbert as there was in earlier books. Yes, it is mentioned, it is assumed, but we don't see it. Gilbert does very little thought or action- he is mostly wallpaper. Lucy doesn't write convincing male characters.

The last third of the book picks up somewhat, with a few more conflicts for the children, and Anne's marriage appears to be in jeopardy. But I finished this book really unsure as to if I wanted to read the final installment- despite the foreshadowing of the last two pages.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Must have if you love Anne of Green Gables!
Anne of Ingleside is one of the best books that I have ever read! This is the sixth book in the Anne of Green Gables series and features some of your favorite characters from the previous novels return! Such as Little Elizebeth, Diana Berry, Rebecca Dew, and others! This novel also indroduces us to Anne's 6 children! Jem who is named after Captain Jim from the fifth book in the series Anne's House of Dream.....Who gets into all kinds of trouble. You also get a chance to see how time has worn at the marrige of Gilbert and Anne! All in all it is a must read! This book can be read even if you haven't read the other 5 books in the series. Believe it or not and still make really good sense!

5-0 out of 5 stars I really liked it!
First of all, Anne does NOT stop being Anne (with an e), for example, on page 8 Anne says "Don't talk as if our day was ended, Diana. We're only 15 years old and kindred spirits. The air isn't just full of light ... it is light. I'm not sure that I haven't sprouted wings." My favorite part of the book was when the ladies were gossiping, it was really funny. If you skip that part of the book how do you know it's boring?
Susan is definatly the funniest character in the book. And who says Anne has to be a feminist?
If you like Anne you should like these books.

4-0 out of 5 stars Awesome!
This book is awesome! Although I have to admit, that some books are better, say "Rilla of Ingleside". I've recommended the "Anne" series to all my friends and they've promised me that they'd read it, for my sake. Even my librarian is as desperate as I am trying to find the rest of the books in the series. "Anne of Ingleside" has it's ups and downs but mostly it's all ups!

5-0 out of 5 stars Equal to The Little House series...
This is the first Anne of Green Gables book I've read, but I have seen the earler versions on tv. I guess I cheated by jumping right to Anne of Ingleside, but I was anxious to see how she fared with five kids, six actually, because she's pregnant when the story opens.

I read it and all I can say is what a sweet
adolescent book:) This story takes us on an adventure of Anne
and her family. Mostly each chapter is devoted to a single family member's adventure. With three girls and three boys, there are many adventures, like the time when an aunt came and wouldn't leave,or the lesson about false friends.

This was a fun book to read and I definitely
give it my highest rating:) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Anne and Gilbert FINALLY get married and set up house
"Anne's House of Dreams" is my least favorite of L. M. Montgomery's novels in the Anne of Green Gables series, which does not mean it is not a first-rate novel. For me, I guess it was a bit anticlimactic for Anne and Gilbert to finally get married, especially after it took three novels for the Anne girl to admit what everybody else knew from the start, that Anne Shirley and Gilbert Blythe were made for each other. But then I read the books in the order they are numbered and not the order in which Montgomery wrote them, in which case I would have skipped "Anne of Windy Poplars" and would therefore not have been bothered by all that time between the engagement and the wedding.

In this fifth Anne of Green Gables novel the newlyweds move into their House of Dreams and start their life together. For the first time Anne is more of an observer than a participant, as the two main characters of the book turn out to be the storytelling Captain Jim and the tragic but romantic figure of Leslie Moore. The most fascinating part of the novel is that the only way you can tell Anne is about to have a baby is that she stops going outside and Marilla shows up (and I have to admit I was shocked, shocked I tell you, that her son's first name is James rather than Matthew). Perhaps no other aspect of Montgomery's work gives us as good an indication that she is writing about another time.

After this volume the emphasis will be more on Anne's children and their friends than our beloved red-haired orphan, so "Anne's House of Dreams" is very much a transitional book in the series. As she becomes an adult and starts living a grown up life, Anne Shirley becomes less interesting to Montgomery than the children (and in "Rainbow Valley" the interesting ones are even the Blythe kids). It is nice to say that if this is the "low" point in the series, then other writers should be so lucky with their high points.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best books in the Anne of Green Gables series!
This is about Anne Blythe and her husband Gilbert Blythe who, after their marriage move to a quaint little house and meet their few neighbors, one of which is Leslie Moore, a beautiful young woman who has suffered many tragedies. Anne strives to become her friend, and in doing so, she helps Leslie and shows her how to live life to its fullest. Anne's life takes a sharp turn when she suffers a tragedy herself. This book is full of surprises, humor, and fun.

5-0 out of 5 stars I adore this book!
It is, in my opinion, the second best Anne book! Its Anne's wedding! The whole thing is soaked in romance! Leslie's story is so amazing and sweet that you have to love her. Captain Jim is so sweet and perfect, you can nearly see him. Miss Cornelia is funny and Susan is great. Anne has to deal with tragedy and joy that makes the books so wonderful. The only thing I don't like, is that i wish Marrilla and all the Avonlea people would be in it a little more. In my opinion, this should be where the series ends.

3-0 out of 5 stars Okay.....
This was a good book with a delightful set of characters. My own personal favorite was captain Jim, with his stories about the sea, and of his lost love, "Lost Margaret." It's not just a happy book that bores us because Gilbert and Anne do lose a child, and they do quarell. However, I think my biggest dissapointment is the lack of Gilbret throughout the entire Anne series. Really, in Montgomeries books we see much more of the male friends of her heroines than their lovers. Gilbert as a character isn't built up at all, I don't really know anything about his personality. He's just a puppet. I'm so eager to know more about him, but it's like he's just a foil for Anne's character. If they were friends perhaps we would know more about his personality. I wish Anne had married someone like David in "Mistress Pat", Barney in "The Blue Castle" or Dean in "Emily's Quest" , or even Jingle in "Pat of Silver Bush."
The relationship between Pat and Jingle is especially moving. But because Gilbert and Anne did not grow up as friends the way Teddy and Emily, and Pat and Jingle did, it's hard to fully understand their feelings for one another...or appreciate the developement of their relationship. I was also dissapointed that Anne gave up her ambitions with marriage, although I understand that Montgomery must have been catering to what society wanted of her during that time period.

3-0 out of 5 stars Slog on to Get to the Real Anne
Some of the wit and magic is missing from Anne's life in the beginning of this book. She's grown up, and there seems to be no real hurdles to cross, or conflict. It makes for a slow read for the first third of the book, while you wait for something to actually happen, instead of a completely idyllic life. Thankfully, things pick up by the 2nd third, and the reader is rewarded by the Anne we all know and care for- responding with love and romance to life's situations and participating in the redemption of those around her. Certainly the ending is a O'Henry twist you wouldn't ever expect. Here again is Anne that you have to sigh over in delight, and kick your feet in the air and laugh in the exhileration of love found again. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An exquisitely funny and endearing book.
"What would you think of a man..." Can anyone who has read "Anne of Windy Poplars" possibly forget the dinner scene at Trix's house? L.M. Montgomery peppers this novel with dozens of characters and situations like that one. Fifth in the "Anne" series, this book is packed with entertaining personalities like Aunts Chatty and Kate, Hazel, Trix, Katherine Brooke (spelled with a K!), Miss Valentine, Jen Pringle (and all her clan), and let's not forget Rebecca Dew. This book will lift your spirits high and banish even the deepest blues. The perfect cure for a depressing day.

4-0 out of 5 stars a comfy book to snuggle up with during a storm
When I started this book more than a year ago, I was quite annoyed at the written format, as the majority of the book is of letters written to Gilbert Blythe from Anne Shirley during her 3 years teaching at Summerside High School. I read all 8 books of Anne of Green Gables last year. A little while ago, I decided to read the books again. Of all the books, I enjoyed Anne of Windy Poplars the most. After the first read, I noticed the beautiful simplicity of her letters, which are so well written of the going-ons at Summerside. I especially liked the "homie" feeling of her stay at the the house of Aunt Kate, Aunt Chatty, and Rebecca Dew. They have the most lovable characters and habits that are betimes humorous. Anne Shirley, as the principal of Summerside, finds herself the automatically-made enemy of "The Royal Family of Summerside"- the Pringles. But since Anne can win affections easily, she doesn't have much of a problem with them. Anne makes extraordinary acquaintances, like her nextdoor neighbor, Little Elizabeth who starves for love. Likewise, her colleague, Katherine Brookes, a hostile sarcastic woman, has never been wanted or loved. Anne changes many a life at her stay at Summerside.
L.M. Montgomery can write simple beautiful books more eloquently than any of the authors who's books I've read. I think it's her imagination that is lacked in other works of words. Anne of Windy Poplars can charm anyone, if you only let yourself be taken away through the chapters of tears and joy in it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not the best..but pretty good
This book was my least favorite out of the four that I have read. It mostly contained letters from Anne to her future husband Gilbert Blythe. It also takes you through three years of her life living in Windy Poplars. Her one challenge she had was trying to deal with "The royal family" the Pringles. Although you might need to read this book to understand the next, I wouldnt recomend reading it.

3-0 out of 5 stars A book you could skip in the series
Out of the entire 8 book series this is definately my least favorite book. After the 3rd book where you here so much about Gilbert you would think that the 4th book would talk more about him. Instead the entire book is made up of letters from her to him telling about her life with out mentioning really any romance between them and what is going on in his life. It has some cute stories in it and it shows Anne for the first time as an outcast that isn't liked, which is a very new thing for her, but i just could not get into this book. It is just a very uninteresting and unimportant book in the whole plot line of the series. It seems to just interupt the flow of the story line through the books. Anne of Windy Poplars is a book that could just be skipped if you are following the life of Anne.

5-0 out of 5 stars Anne in Love
I've read the entire "Anne" saga more times than I can count, at least once a year since I was 10 (that's a minimum of 15 times). This book is the "odd one out" in the series but is also one of my favorites.

Written mostly as letters from Anne to her now fiancé Gilbert while he is studying medicine and she is working as the Principal of Summerside High School, this book is much more personal than the other Anne books in my opinion. We get to see Anne as she finally grows into herself and is happy with her life and its direction.

Anne's struggles to win over the somewhat eccentric townsfolk of Summerside are alternately hilarious and touching. If you've ever been on the outside looking in, you will truly appreciate her trials.

As usual L. M. Montgomery's writing is absolutely wonderfully descriptive and very true to the era she depicts. The little "homey" touches in her writing endear her work to me more and more as I get older.

If you love Anne, please read this book and get to know Miss Shirley in a more personal way than many of the other books allow. The basic L.M. Montgomery ingredients are there as well as the usual heaping dose of charm. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Christmas memories in the making
This book is so charming and gentle. It is filled with lovely stories of Christmases past. All of them have a message of the true meanings of Christmas: giving, loving, sharing, forgiving, and family. The stories are so simple and fresh in today's day and age. Lucy Maud Montgomery is a treasure in any child's library. This is no exception. There is a light warm feeling that comes from reading this book. There are enough stories to count down the days of Christmas with your children with a story each night. What a lovely way to wind down a day, and tuck them in with a warm feeling inside!

4-0 out of 5 stars Absoloutly Fabulous, darling!
This heart warming book is a fabulous book. It makes readers think that there're lots of generous people who can help you when you feel sad or if you think that Christmas or New YEar is not that exicting.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a wonderful, heart-warming book to be treasured.
This collection of Christmas and New Year stories full of the spirit of the season. It is a wonderful, heart-warming book to be treaured all year long. It lets it's readers know that at Christmas time, and at New Year's as well, anything can happen as long as their are kind and generous people in the world.

5-0 out of 5 stars A warm and wonderful book for any time of year
Fans of Lucy Maud Montgomery young and old will truly enjoy this new collection of short stories. This is what I call "comfort reading", about kinder, simpler times. As always, readers come to care about the characters and their situations. Even the two excerpts from Montgomery's novels that are included in this anthology stand by themselves very well. This book would be a wonderful Christmas present, but I read it in July and found it a treat for any time of year.

5-0 out of 5 stars A warm and wonderful read for fans of L.M. Montgomery
I was thrilled to find this book, because I have read everything else L. M. Montgomery has written. "Christmas with Anne" did not disappoint me. The characters were vivid and sympathetic and the stories were warm and fascinating. I read this book slowly to savor each story, and hated to see it end. Even the two excerpts from the "Anne" books which were included read differently in this volume and stood alone quite well. This would be a wonderful Christmas present, but you don't have to wait until the snow flies. I read it in July and still loved it. ... Read more
