4-0 out of 5 stars Math can be fun!
My children really enjoy Stuart Murphy's Math Start series. They introduce children to simple math concepts in a colorful format. Of course, you can't expect your children to learn all of their math skills by reading picture books, but they are great supplemental material. And they are great to read to preschoolers so that when it does come time to learn math in school, it is not a completely foreign subject. Spunky Monkeys on Parade is a fun book! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Catchy rhymes, beautiful pictures
"Wumble Jungle" as my two-year-old calls it, is a day-long safari that introduces young children to different wild animals. It features catchy rhymes that may or may not make sense (but this doesn't bother my two children, 5 and 2), and bright cheerful pictures. It's become part of our stable of bedtime story reading material. Keep an eye out for Andreae's other book, "Giraffes Can't Dance". I read it in my son's class and got applause from enraptured children at the end of the tale.

5-0 out of 5 stars An engaging book for children of all ages
I read Rumble in the Jungle to a 3rd grade class for "Read Across America Day." I figured it might be a little below their reading ability but the humor and pictures made it all worthwhile! They loved the goofy rhymes (one is about an animal "being cool.") I'll be buying it for my own kids, ages 2 and 6!

5-0 out of 5 stars Busy, bright and fun!
Kids love books that rhyme. Dr. Suess has proved that time and again! This book is well written and very colorful. I believe that most kids, I know my girls do, LOVE animals. The illustrations are extremely well done, very large, very interesting and super colorful! I know my girls will enjoy this book for many more years.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read
I work at a toy store, and I found this book when I was ticketing the price tags. After I read the book, I had to buy it because the illustrations were excellent and the story was innovative. You should get this book for your child...I don't have any kids yet, but I will definately read this one over and over to them someday...

4-0 out of 5 stars A book you can read OVER and OVER
My preschooler adores this book, both the rhymes and illustrations. I enjoy it because it belongs in that rare class of children's books that parents can read REPEATEDLY without gritting their teeth from the pain of repetition. And as any parent knows, that's what will happen when your child falls in love with a book. I really wish I could find prints to decorate my child's walls with the fantastic illustrations also - simple and eye catching in lots of bright colors. ... Read more

Book Description

Twitchly Fidget won"t shampoo, eat his cereal, or put on his sneakers. He won"t even go to a parade (what if he got sucked up into a trombone?) or a marshmallow roast (might he get stuck?) or a Fourth of February party (would he be buried in confetti?). In Twitchly"s imagination, each opportunity poses the threat of disaster. So he just sits alone in his dreary, windowless, doorless hut and waits for his fears to be realized. Then one day something does happen: Twitchly"s Aunt Bridget Fidget drops in for a visit, and she can see right away that Twitchly needs a fixin". But will Aunt Bridget be able to persuade Twitchly to confront his fears? ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Twitchly Fidget is afraid that something (bad) might happen
Twitchly Fidget is a young lemur who worries about absolutely everything bad that might happen to him, even though nothing has so far. But it might. He could put his shoes on the wrong feet and walk cross-legged for the rest of his life. This and other thoughts keep Twichly from doing anything, which means he does not get to enjoy anything either, like the parade all the other kids are going to go watch. Fortunately, one day Twitchly Fidget's Aunt Bridget Fidget drops in for a vidget, um, a visit, and she shows her young nephew that his fears are unfounded.

"Something Might Happen" is told by Helen Lester and illustrated by Lynn Munsinger. This particular pair has collaborated on dozens of similar books, from "Tackylocks and the Three Bears" and "Score One for the Sloths" to "Hooway for Wodney Wat" and "It Wasn't My Fault." In these times when the nightly news can give young kids ample reason for being anxious, "Something Might Happen" teaches young readers that letting your imagination add to your anxities is not a good thing. Lester dedicates the book to her son Robin, "who chose to be there when something happened," and hopefully young readers will feel the same when they finish this story.

If you have a child who is anxious about what is happening in their world, then this book could well be a remedy of sorts. The story is structured so that Aunt Bridget disposes of all of Twitchly's fears one by one, providing a nice sense of symmetry. Munsinger's artwork does a nice job of turning the frightened little lemur into one who goes out into the world to see what might happen next.

5-0 out of 5 stars His imagination always sees disaster in any situation
Helen Lester's Something Might Happen receives Lynn Munsinger's delightfully zany color drawings as it tells of Twitchly Fidget, who is afraid to go anywhere or do anything. His imagination always sees disaster in any situation, so he stays indoors and waits for adventure to come to him - which it does, with an unusual twist. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars lots of good info
Science author Seymour Simon gives us a great education on Gorillas in his book titled Gorillas. We learn neat facts about these creatures. They can weight only weight about 5 pounds we they are born up grow to weight more than 400 pounds! The book includes lots of full color photos of Gorillas. It also tells us there are 3 group of gorillas. We learn about all three groups in the book and get to see pictures of them as well.

The content of the book is written in a simplistic manner, but is loaded with facts and statistics about gorillas.

Children who would like learn more about gorillas will enjoy this book. We recommed it to animal loves ages 4-9.

5-0 out of 5 stars The majesty of the gorilla
In "Gorillas," a rich assortment of full-color photographs is complemented by the interesting, straightforward text of Seymour Simon. The result is fine book for young readers who are interested in gorillas.

Simon describes the different subspecies of gorilla: the western lowland, eastern lowland, and mountain gorilla. He also discusses gorilla anatomy and social life. Particularly interesting is the material about gorilla babies and their development. Simon makes it clear that gorillas are, in general, peaceful beings who have sometimes been inaccurately portrayed by the entertainment industry. Towards the end of the book, Simon discusses some threats to wild gorillas and pays tribute to the work of pioneering gorilla researchers George Schaller and Dian Fossey.

Of course, very young readers will be happy to simply look at the stunning photographs in the book. The cameras capture the varied range of gorilla facial expression and body language. Especially moving are the pictures of young gorillas and gorilla family groups. Looking into the faces of these beings, you can really see the genetic kinship they share with humans (Simon notes that our two species share 98% of our DNA)."Gorillas" is another fine achievement for Seymour Simon. ... The five little monkeys and their mama have had it with their "rickety, rattletrap wreck of a car." It's time to sell this old heap. Mama makes a "For Sale" sign and goes inside. But her ever-helpful children worry that the car is too icky, sticky, and slimy, and take matters into their own industrious hands. "I know!" says one little monkey. And next thing they know, they're washing and scrubbing the filthy jalopy. Now it's clean, but still rusty and stinky. The monkeys ponder. "I know!" says one little monkey. Soon the car is painted and perfumed within an inch of its life. Unfortunately, it's not visible to potential buyers. "I know!" says one little monkey. With all these collective brainstorms, it's not long before the sparkly clean, psychedelically colorful car has landed in the swamp, with the five chagrined little monkeys inside, and a gaggle of crocodiles lurking nearby, licking their chops. How will they ever get themselves out of this mess, and sell the car, to boot? "I know!" says one little monkey...

These five are no strangers to silly predicaments and clever solutions, as evidenced in Eileen Christelow's four other entertaining picture books about the quintet, including Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed and Five Little Monkeys Sitting in a Tree. 5-0 out of 5 stars Monkeeeeey Up!
There's a comforting familiarity about the "Curious George" books: The soft illustrations, the man in the yellow hat, and George's famous misadventures. Here, the man speaks the sentence that starts the mischief: "You stay here, but don't get into trouble." Say that one with a wink in your eye. As usual, George's playful antics get him into a little trouble, but (and also, "as usual") he winds up a hero. Well-illustrated, humorous, and soothing, it's the literary equivalent of hot chocolate on a cold day. Excellent for readers in around grades 1-3, as well as a great bedtime book for your young sports (or Curious George) fan.

5-0 out of 5 stars What matters is...does your child like it?
After reading a few reviews of this book, I felt I had to write one. My 22 month old son has adored this book since he was about 15 months old. It is his absolute favorite. No, the illustrations aren't artwork. No, it's not going to win awards. But who cares! It's for the child - not the parent. My son (just like one of the other reviewer's child) shouts "foul ball!" and "you're out!" He looks for Jimmy's mother in the crowd and he points to his own feet when we get to the part where George picks up the ball with his feet. I think what matters is that it's a fun, easily understood story for toddlers - with bright, neat illustrations. Our paperback is so dog-eared, I logged on to order the hardback...and ended up writing a review. Give this book a try - the wonderful moments it will give you and your child are at the very least worth the few dollars the paperback costs.

1-0 out of 5 stars Curious George Plays baseball
This book, and all of the books derived from the movies, are far worse than the average goerge books. Story is very simple, very brief, and has no creativity. Both of our kids are huge george fans (they even liked this one ok), but this is a pretty weak book.

4-0 out of 5 stars George "junkie" loves it
My 21-month-old son loves anything having to do with Curious George, this book included. It's taught him several new words, such as catcher and bat, and he can relate to the ball-throwing and hitting even at this young age. However, be aware that the illustrations in this book, as well as many of the other paperback "George" books, are of very, very poor quality.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great read even for small children!
My 22 month old LOVES this book, listens to every page intently, and shout FOUL BALL! , and YOU'RE OUT! with the umpire. Even when he only had a 20 word vocabulary, one of those words was "George"...a great book for dads to read, my husband is much more animated in his portrayal of the umpire, much to my son's delight. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Why do the tiny monkeys insist on sleeping amongst thorns?
The Rio Negro (Black River) is the second biggest river in Brazil, taking its name from its dark waters. In trees along the banks of the Rio Negro live tiny monkeys, which are called "blackmouths" by the local tribes. The reason for this is that their mouths are as dark as the waters of the river. These tiny monkeys live in tall palm tree that are full of sharp thorns and although the thorns are uncomfortable the monkeys sleep on top of them each night. If this seems somewhat strange to you this seems no less strange to the natives, who made up an amusing story to explain why the monkeys do this.

"So Say the Little Monkeys" is Nancy Van Laan's version of the tale told in the Brazilian rain forests about the blackmouth monkeys. Illustrated by Yumi Heo, this is a read-aloud book where children 3-7 will have fun with the constant refrain: "Jump, jabba jabba, run, jabba jabba, munch, jabba jabba, tiny, tiny monkeys having fun." Of course the jump/run/munch part changes depending on what the tiny monkeys are doing, so children too young to read will still be able to anticipate how the refrain will be different the next time around depending on what the little monkeys have been doing.

In "So Say the Little Monkeys" the tiny monkeys actually think about building themselves a shelter so they can have shelter from the rain (plinka plinka), the wind (wooya wooya), and the jaguar (gurr-yuh gurr-yuh), but it seems they always get distracted by something a lot more fun. Will young children who are listening to or reading this story figure out that maybe they have a lot in common with tiny monkeys? Maybe not. But they still should be able to appreciate the lesson of this story, namely that you should not put off for tomorrow something that you can do today.

5-0 out of 5 stars the RHYTHM is makes the book fun for young and old
This book that is great to give to new families starting out their library. The rythm of this story makes it so fun to read and for the kids to listen to- over and over and over again. Its simple enough for the youngest child to have fun with and fill in the fun sounds, or a life lesson in getting, or not getting, your work done for older kids.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!
My 7 month old loves this book. His face lights up when he hears the rain "plinka, plinka" and the wind "Wooya, Wooya". He also loves the pictures. I know this will always be one of his favorites.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Fun Read
Both my three year old daughter and I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It's rhyming verse is fun to read and the pictures are captivating. The actual story of how the carefree monkeys avoid making their night-time nests is light-hearted and amusing. My daughter and I borrowed this entertaining book from our local library. We liked it so well that I intend to buy it for her collection of favorites.

5-0 out of 5 stars My boys love this book!
Never mind the review that says this for age 3+. My 14 month old won't go to bed until we've read this at least three times. He's barely talking but he picks up the books and says "Whee!" And his older brother (age 4) chimes in with the "Jibba Jibba Jabba" every time! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Sword in the Stone
The Sword in the Stone is a fiction book about a young, poor boy named Arther. He is a squire and is going to assist a knight in a contest. Auther meets Merlin, a magician. They become good friends and Merlin shows Auther all of his magic. Auther forgets the knights swords and has to find another sword quickly. Auther goes to the sword in the stone and pulls, and it comes right out. He is now hailed as King Auther.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Impenetrable" Dreams Come True
As an artist and a teacher I see many valuable qualities in this book. First of all there is the opportunity for young people to learn about an important endangered species, Mountain Gorillas. Then there are the exquisite, artistically inspiring watercolor illustrations - equal to the quality of P.J. Lynch (When Jessie Came Across The Sea). But most importantly to me, this magnificent book also gives guidance to children in pursuing a life long dream. It doesn't make it look easy and I can't say I would want to go to the Impenetrable Forest, but thanks to Ted and Betsy Lewin I don't have to. The authors had never seen anything but photos of dead Mountain Gorillas. They wanted to meet them alive, face to face. And they did. It's an amazing, exciting, true-life adventure that keeps you on the edge of your seat! It's better than Indiana Jones because it's real. The authors are wonderful examples of heroes that are clearly willing to do whatever it takes (and it takes a lot) to make their dreams come true. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars "Old-Fashioned" Experiences Still Have Appeal
I loved Lillian Hoban's books as a child. I identified with the character's typical childhood adventures. Whether planning a party, losing a tooth, or trying to earn money for something, the humor in these stories is what makes them so entertaining and the lesson in the end is learned painlessly. Ms. Hoban's distinctive drawings are attractive with lots of details that communicate & enhance the text (think of the Frances series) - perfect for readers new to the chapter book format.
But how would these books appeal to my own children, 20 years later? I oughtn't have worried. My 5 year old, who is reading a little ahead of her age, is engaged by these books. She finds Violet clever & identifies with her "little sister" issues. The topics are not beyond her. My 7 year old son also enjoys the books because they make him laugh. There is an "old-fashioned" flavor to the tales my children find sweet - taffy making, penny candy, reading the funnies or pulling a loose tooth with a string.
It is fair to note that Arthur is mean to his sister, Violet, at times. As a mother I find it a little off-putting. But it is very clear to readers that he is not being nice and is food for thought for many an older sibling (myself included). A fine reminder to older kids to be patient with little ones, because they often have something worthwhile to contribute. And, fortunately, Arthur always makes amends in the end.
As many of our children grow up in a time where they can't run around the neighborhood they way these characters do, or their parents did, it's nice to pay a visit to Arthur & Violet's little world.

3-0 out of 5 stars Daughter tired of it after first week
This was OK the first few times, but it doesn't hold up to repeated playings. My daughter and I don't like Arthur much, don't care much about him, and don't want any more of his stories. Maybe it would be better for kids with siblings close in age that fight who could relate to it better. ... Read more

Book Description

The jungle is astir. Something very, very exciting has happened beneath the old family tree. What could it possibly be? Whatever the cause, it certainly has the jungle denizens in a tizzy. In six glorious, bursting-with-color-and-energy pop-up spreads, Paul Stickland yet again dazzles young readers with brilliant, reach-right-out-and-grab-you self-activating pops. Follow the monkeys through the jungle as they gather their neighborhood friends - elephants, tigers, giraffes, and alligators - to unveil something that makes them feel so proud. Big brothers and big sisters will be especially delighted to discover the new arrivals nestled snugly within the shrubbery...and can even rock them to and fro simply by pulling a tab. Using the same lilting, chant-along rhyming text and pop-up wizardry he displayed in his bestselling Truck Jam and Big Dig, Paul Stickland has added an outrageously hilarious jungle menagerie to his masterful repertoire. ... Accompany George on a tour of feelings and emotions where he is sometimes sad, and sometime silly. "Are You Curious," explores the curiosity of children in an amusing and delightful way, "Have you ever been naughty, so that you need a time out?" This entertaining little board book will hold your babies interest through colorful illustrations and simple text. Birth and up.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Way to Teach Emotions
This book was not at all what I expected. At first I wasn't sure I would like it, but the response from my one year old son was excellent. He really enjoys learning about all the different emotions George feels. We also spend a lot of time talking about being naught and getting a time out. I think it helps a little with understanding. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have for gorilla lovers
This is a must have book for anyone who loves gorillas. It chronicles the heartwarming story of a baby gorilla & his family as they travel to their new home showing how they adapt to their new environment. The book starts off with the tale of Cenzoo, the baby gorilla, who was abandoned & near dead. It details his and his families (him & mother, another female, & a silverback male) airplane adventure to their new home in a Denver zoo. The story continues to follow the lives of the gorilla family as they acclimate to their new home. There are many observations about how a gorilla's behavior differs in captivity versus in the wild. I really like how each gorilla's personality traits were described. I truly felt as if I got to know each of the gorillas. Lots of time is also given the plight of the vanishing gorillas & what is being done to help.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
Absorbing, thought-provoking, informative, well-written! Wish it was longer -- with more details about the author's experience with the gorillas in Rwanda and well as more pictures of the Primate Panorama and Cenzoo's daily activities. I've put a visit to the zoo on my travel list. ... Read more

Book Description

Stunning photographs and evocative text take readers to far-off Madagascar. There, primatologist Alison Jolly dwells and works among lemurs. These fascinating primates live only on the island of Madagascar, where they socialize in troops--and where, like humans, they are often involved in power struggles and family disputes. Threats to the environment have endangered lemurs, but Dr. Jolly hopes that by studying these unusual animals she’ll discover ways for people to live in harmony with their distant primate cousins.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good book to introduce children to the joys of research.
I think the best part of the book is that it shows children the fun and excitement of doing primate research in the wild. It shows why Alison Jolly has returned to the same piece of forest for the last 30 years. It balances that by displaying some of the sorrow when you cannot help a dying animal.

And of course, it describes Lemur catta social organization at a level which should be entertaining to children, and mentions briefly some of the other lemurs found in Berenty reserve.

The book is nicely illustrated with photographs on every page. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars H.A. Rey uses good learning skills
H.A. Rey uses good learning skills to teach children the alphabet. He uses visual education by making the letters into animals and people that the letter resembles. And he also uses good repetition after introducing the letter by using phrases that have the perticular letter in it and he highlights the letter used to make it stand out for the child. This book makes learning the alphabet fun and easy. It is original and playful, but what book with curious george isn't? ... Read more
