A bike is for just one monkey to ride, right? Well, not if anothermonkey jumps on the handlebars. "Hooray, the two shouted. / We're having suchfun. / This bike is far better for two / than for one!"That is, until theyhit a bump in the road and monkeys go flying. One Monkey Too Many playfully explores the hazards of loading too many monkeys into a golf cart, canoe, or hotel bed, and finally, into the picture book itself: "Six, said the author. / "This book is for six. / The pages are full, / so nomore of your tricks." Even that doesn't stop extra pesky monkeys from sneaking into the picture. Lynn Munsinger's thoroughly charming, expressive illustrations add energy and humor to Jackie French Koller's already vivacious rhymes. Children will love the fact that the monkeys gleefully ignore the warnings of the well-meaning adults, as well as the page-splattering chaos that ensues when one monkey too many is along for the ride. Kids will also enjoy locating the extra monkeys in this buoyant read-aloud romp, making it an excellent counting book. (Ages 3 to 6) --Karin Snelson ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Hilarious and fun to read
My son and I first checked this book out of the library, but he kept wanting to read it, so we bought it and it was been one of his favorites ever since.I enjoy reading it to him too.The illustrations are fantastic and the verses are light, flowing and fun to read. The rhythm of the text lures my son into a read-a-thon and we end up reading it not once, not twice but three times or more.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun counting book
This is a fun counting book about monkeys who break the rules about how many people can do certain things at a time.Whenever one monkey too many joins the group, it starts off fun, but inevitably ends in disaster. The book is not exactly scary, but a lot of objects get broken, so it might be an uncomfortable read for kids with anxieties about breaking things. The story is quite humorous, and it has about 500 words.

5-0 out of 5 stars Educators Recommend
This is one funny book! The story begins with a bear bikeseller telling the monkey, "This bike is for one. / One monkey can ride it, / and one can have fun." True to its title, it doesn't take long for "one monkey too many" to jump on the bike-with predictably disastrous results. "It started to wobble. / It started to pitch. One monkey too many crashed into the ditch!"

Left with a busted bike, the two monkeys are given a cart by a golfing tiger. "Two," said the golfer. / "This cart is for two. / If you're looking for fun, / this is perfect for you." Would have been perfect, that is, if "one monkey too many" hadn't hopped right on.

The story continues in this vein with the monkeys trying out a canoe, an elegant restaurant, and, finally, a large bed.

At story's end, the book's author tells the monkeys, "This book is for six. The pages are full, / so no more of your tricks." Of course, as soon as the author goes out to lunch . . . you guessed it . . . one monkey too many gets into the book-literally-making a huge, hilarious mess all over the last page.

Lynn Munsinger was the perfect choice for illustrating this clever creation. Her pen and ink and watercolor cartoons capture perfectly the rambunctious action and gleeful expressions of the monkeys, as well as the horrified-yet comical-faces of the onlookers.

The book is a delight to read aloud. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hilarious and uproarious
This is a wonderful book. The text has a lilting, easy-to-read flow to it, and the phrases are often hilarious, but the illustrations are what really make it a classic! My children love seeing what the naughty little monkeys will get themselves into next. The "twist" at the end of the book is the best part - we all laughed ourselves silly. What a fun, fun book for children and grownups alike!

5-0 out of 5 stars Too Much Monket Business
My 3 and 4 year-olds love this book. The rhymes are very good (not your standard rhymes), the pictures are hysterical and the author manages to sneak in a counting exercise. Some books you get tired of reading but not this one. Finally, the lessons about safety (a not so subtle subtext) are not preachy but funny and to the point. You can't go wrong with this one. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars teaching my granddaughter Spanish :)
I bought this for my three-year-old granddaughter at Christmas. She loves it and has developed a pretty good accent (as good as mine, anyhow :) She knows what a bolsa is, and a monito and of course a sombrero amarillo. She has it firmly in mind that balloon = globo, so the globe of the world is like a balloon. Red is rojo and blue is azul.

And she hasn't yet taken to smoking a pipe :)

What's especially interesting is that she doesn't require that the story be translated, though she does like to talk about what Jorge is up to on a given page. "WHY did the man put Jorge in a bolsa?"

1-0 out of 5 stars poor judgement
I had never read this book as I child but since I knew it was a classic I decided to buy it for my daughter. I never realized that Curious George and his owner smoke pipes and make it look appealing. I guess this has to do with the fact that this book is very old. If you dont' mind giving your child the idea that smoking a pipe is acceptable than buy this book for your child. Mine won't be reading it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Revisit Curious Jorge...in Spanish!

4-0 out of 5 stars One of the best in the Curious George series.
In this story George and his friend visit the zoo to see a new exhibit. George witnesses a zoo keeper feeding the seals and decides it would be fun to share his snack with the other animals. Because George can't read the signs by the animal cages he doesn't know that you should not feed the animals. After giving the zoo keepers a merry chase he is caught and told that feeding the animals things they shouldn't eat can make them sick. George feels bad and makes up for it by helping the zoo keepers with the new exhibit. Excellent story and introduces a number of different animals for children to identify. ... Read more

Book Description

Ain't polite to point out what a person's got missing, Jimmy Harbert thinks, in his unmistakable east Texas twang. Joy Bolores Monroe had just referred to Jasper's tongue, which is indeed missing; the chauffeur tells all with hand signs. Not all, actually, for there are many mysteries behind the grandiose exterior of Grandmother Monroe's mansion, to which Jimmy and his younger sister, Mary Al, have been cajoled to baby-sit a capuchin monkey that keeps escaping--which is more than J.D. can do. Many Monroe mysteries Jimmy must plumb for himself among the mansion's spooky passages and on the island in the lake behind it--the site of Elsewhere. With tenderness and a dramatist's sense of story, the writer opens a caged world to sunlight, and two unlikely friends, J.D. and Jimmy, to each other. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The island monkey
This book is really good. It is sorta boring at the beginning, but its good at the end. My favorite part is when they took the monkey to the zoo, and got chased. I think you should read this book because its about a monkey that has a big effect on a girl. I would recommend this book to you.

4-0 out of 5 stars This book is a rollercoaster of emotions
I think this book is good because it has a lot of action. My favorite part was when they got chased in the zoo. I think you should check this book out because its grabs your mind. We read this book in our Principal's Book talk, so it has to be good. At the very beginning its not as good as you think it would be, but at the end it gets better.

5-0 out of 5 stars Originality, humor and compassion through a child's eye.

4-0 out of 5 stars The first introduction of Curious George
This book has charming illustrations of Curious George and his siblings. It's actually the first book George ever appeared in. I think it can be enjoyed simply for that, keeping in mind it was written in simpler times before childrens' books were analyzed for political correctness. A previous review slashed this book saying the monkeys were cruel to the giraffe....I've never seen it that way, nor have the kids who I've read it to. See for yourself. If you're a fan of Curious George you'll enjoy seeing his debut.

4-0 out of 5 stars Can Curious George Go Back to the Jungle???
Cecily loves her new family of monkey children and tries to make them as happy as she can. It's fun seeing how happy Curious George was before he was kidnapped by the man with the yellow hat and carted off from the jungle to New York. He had a wonderful large family, of which he was a beloved member. When I read this to my second grade class, they were upset that he had been taken from them. I reminded them that anyone of them can write the book that takes George home again. And that's what's great about imagination! I like this book quite a bit, even though the giraffe is a bit too accomodating about what she will allow the monkey to do. But what they think up, and what she does, are very imaginative and warm.

1-0 out of 5 stars Attractive illustrations but utterly weird
Attractice illustrations combined with Curious G, pulled my 4yr old's attention to this book. WHen we read it, I just could not digest the story. Cecily will just do whatever the monkeys ask her to, even if it is dangerous to her and she is not enjoying it. This utter compliance (which is wrong) made me point out to my son that you really cannot tie someone's neck to a tree or slide down their back with a pointed ski poles. I don't know what the author was thinking, it is almost sadistic. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars This is an alright book
Curious George always get in trouble. This time he gets in trouble in the fire station. I think Personally that this book is a good book, for little kids like me so, I that is why I rated this book a 3.

4-0 out of 5 stars Its A Good Book
Like all Curious George books, George is in over his head when he causes a false alarm at the fire station. But he comes to the rescue and saves a curious puppy. He is awarded with an offical fire station hat.

I think this is a good book for kids. It has fire truck and puppy's. Think back to when you were a little kid, if you didn't want to be a fireman your best friend did.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, but not the same
This book is " adapted from the Curious George film series". The illustrations are different from the original, and even from the "Illustrated in the style of H.A. REY" both of which I feel are much better.

More of CG's adventures. My nearly 2-year old likes the book because of the puppies, fire engines, the pole etc, but he doesn't linger on the pages like the original books, looking at the details of the illustrations.

It doesn't start with the normal, " This is George. George is a good little monkey...".

I only remember the original books, didn't know about the tapes and film series, so I was disappointed. I would build my collection of CG without this book, until I had all the original and book first ( "Illustrated in the style of HA Rey") versions.
