5-0 out of 5 stars Introduce Your Kids to Art - Great Book!
As a mom of a preschooler (and baby), I'm always looking for ways to expose my 3-year-old son to great art without boring him, and this book is perfect! I've bought other art-related kids books, and they were not captivating like this one is. The text has gentle rhyme, and my son really got into the different paintings. The "Biographical Notes" section has more information on the artists if you've forgotten your college Art History (like me!), and my son found it interesting, too. I really liked the message at the end of the book, "...And nobody sees the world like you." I plan on making this book my new gift for everyone -- for new babies, for my son's friends' birthday gifts, holidays, etc. It would be great for kids of all ages, really. You will love this book! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars art for youth
I checked out this book from the library because, as an adult, I felt I didn't know enough about paintings to appreciate them fully when I visited an art gallery. This book briefly covers a large number of aspects of art including color, perspective, portraits, and landscape. The paintings used as examples are many and varied and they are beautifully reproduced. I learned many things but as I read, I came up with many more questions the book did not answer. However, I am a 36-year-old college graduate. I believe that the book is quite informative for its recommended age group: 9-12. I am getting a copy for my artistic nephew's tenth birthday. ... In another wondrous, wordless picture book by Caldecott Medal winner David Wiesner (Tuesday and June 29, 1999), a class visiting the Empire State Building finds complete cloud cover and no visibility. One boy makes friends with a cloud (identifiable in the mists by the red mittens, hat, and scarf and swipes from the boy), and goes AWOL on a wonderful adventure. The cloud whisks him away to the "Sector 7" floating cloud factory, a bizarre sky station that looks like a Victorian design for a submarine.

Hiding behind his new cumulonimbus friend, the boy enters an area resembling Grand Central Station (complete with "Arrivals" and "Departures" boards) and watches officious human types in uniform giving the clouds their weather assignments. When the clouds complain to the boy that their assigned shapes are boring, he, a talented artist, creates new blueprints for them. The stuffy grownups are furious when clouds start emerging in the shape of fantastic fish; they shout at the clouds, tear up the new designs, and escort the boy back to his school group. But the revolt of the clouds is unstoppable now, and in the last few pages the skies over Manhattan suddenly get a lot more interesting. (Click to see a sample spread. 5-0 out of 5 stars If you've ever seen a shape in the clouds, read this book!
This is yet another great book by author/illustrator David Wiesner. This is a story about a boy who goes on a field trip to the Empire State Building. As a result of complete cloud cover the boy makes friends with a unique character, a cloud. The cloud takes the boy to "Sector 7" where all clouds are made by boring, uninspired beings. The boys spices things up by creating factastic shapes for the clouds. The boy is kicked out of Sector 7 by those beings who do not appreciate his artistic ability. After the boy is gone the clouds revolt and what follows is a delight for the eyes! This almost wordless picture book stretches the imagination and keeps you guessing page after page about what you will see next.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Wordless Piece of Art
David Wiesner's Sector 7 illustrates an artistic young boy's adventure on a school field trip to the Empire State Building, where he meets a "friendly cloud-man." The "friendly cloud-man" takes the boy to "Sector 7," (the place where clouds are formed and placed around the globe). The boy uses his talents to give the unhappy clouds an eye-opening makeover. Wiesner's illustrations create an expressive story. His detailed pictures work together to make the story understandable and interesting. To enhance the mood and atmosphere of the story, Wiesner uses the choice of bold, friendly watercolors and unique frames throughout the book. The frames are presented in chronological order either top to bottom, left to right, or back to front. Sector 7 gives the reader's mind a chance to unwind and expand beyond its imaginable limits. It is definitely a book that will attract those of all ages and test their imagination.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great First Book
Sector 7 is a great first book. Since it has essentially no words and requires none to be enjoyed, the book can be "read" and understood by very young children. We all see the clouds in the sky and who hasn't seen something in their shapes?

This book ranks with Sendak's "Where the Wild Things Are." To get a child started on the road to reading and loving it, Sector 7 can be enjoyed alone, with a friend or parent.

5-0 out of 5 stars Every day should be a cloudy day like this one...
Of all the children's books I have read, this one stands out as my all time favorite. I love to write, and treasure the words in good stories, but Sector 7 needs no words to be understood. All you have to do is read the pictures, and let your imagination do the rest.

A little boy with artistic talent draws in the fog on the window of the schoolbus that is taking his class on a field trip to the Empire State Building. When the children arrive, they rush to the top only to find that it is completely cloudy. There is zero visibility, nothing but clouds. This makes it easy for one friendly cloud to make friends with the boy, and whisk him away to Sector 7, a cloud factory in the sky. The clouds are bored with their round and blobby shapes, so the boy puts his talent to work to draw plans for new cloud shapes. The clouds begin to reinvent themselves into interesting new forms. It doesn't take long before the powers that be take notice, and search for the culprit. The boy is immediately caught and sent back to join his class. You'd think it would end there, but his precocious little cloud friends has other plans. The ending of this book is delightful, as the boy begins to see the difference he made take hold in the sky. My favorite illustration is the boy asleep at the end. Even I , as an adult, think that sleeping on a cloud would be heavenly.

This book is magical for children and adults alike. If you are familiar with David Wiesner's work or not, Sector 7 is a special treat.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great pics /cool rhymes
My little son loves this book...the authors have successfully chosen pictures and written wonderful poems for each picture that tell a story throughout the book. I find the poems great because they aren't the usual baby drivel and the meter of them is soft and lilting...perfect for bedtime! We also bought the matisse story (the van gogh is a little bit better) but both are great...looking for more!

4-0 out of 5 stars Nintendo Needs Work on How To Draw Books.
I found this book very enjoyable, but the books seems to short. I could use more pictures on some of the characters that lacked a body tutorial. Like Wario, the book only teaches you to draw his mug, and I want more than that!

Some characters needed more poses, and some were just plain excluded from the book. Like Lanky, or Funky, or Cranky from Donkey Kong 64. Do not get me wrong, I love this book, but it is somewhat lacking in the selection of poses.

This book has tedious drawing instructions, but if you are a Nintendo fan, and are persistent, this book is for you!

5-0 out of 5 stars Drawing made simple
My kids love the classic Nintendo games, and this easy, step-by-step guide helped them learn to draw their favorite Nintendo heroes (and bad guys). Lots of drawing fun at an affordable price.

1-0 out of 5 stars This book was not easy at all!
I bought this book about 3 or 4 years ago. I havent looked at it since because it was too hard and it didn't have the right steps
needed to draw the drawings.

1-0 out of 5 stars Too difficult for most Nintendo-playing kids
...I thought this book would be great for a 9 yr old but the instructions were too tedious for him. He ended up getting too frustrated and has never picked up the book again...

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for its low price but a little skimpy
I bought this book for my ten-year-old son who is a dedicated "Nintendo person" and wants to learn to draw some of his favorite characters. The author and illustrator have taken some of these animated figures and have shown how to develop drawings by breaking the overall process down into three stages.

The first step is to get the basic shapes/perspectives correct, and then the details are filled in over the next two steps. This is a tried and true approach to drawing, but for some of the more complex characters even the very first "perspective and shapes" sketch is kind of difficult for kids to do correctly. Consequently, I think that an additional, even more basic stage/step might have been helpful.

My son reports that he's happy with the book because it includes Krool and Link, the personalities he most wanted to draw. At only 32 pages, however, this short guide clearly is not comprehensive, and there is no guarantee that a particular Nintendo personality a child may have in mind will be included here. Still, overall, this is an extremely useful book and certainly the only one of its kind. My son has already spent hours in deep concentration practicing his sketching, and I think that in itself is quite an endorsement of the work offered here by Mr. Teitlebaum and Mr. Zalme. ... Book Description

COME LOOK WITH ME: Enjoying Art with Children is the first volume in the COME LOOK WITH ME series of interactive art books from Lickle Publishing. Each book in the series introduces children to twelve magnificent works of art.More importantly, they offer a whole new way of encountering any work of art, one that engages the imagination as much as the eye.

Well suited for both individual and classroom use, Enjoying Art with Children pairs quality art reproductions with thought-provoking questions, encouraging children to learn through visual exploration and interaction.Thoughtful text introduces the world and work of the artist, making the most of a child’s natural curiosity.

Children are invited to search out the details that bring works of art to life – the tattered sleeve of a street urchin in John Brown’s A Tough Story, and the rosy complexion of a young musician in Renoir’s Two Girls at the Piano.

Drawing from a wide-ranging selection of works of art, from Hans Holbein the Younger’s 16th century portrait of a one-year-old Edward VI, Edward VI as a Child, to Pablo Picasso’s 1938 study of his daughter with a sailor doll, Maya with a Doll, children explore the artwork with lessons in perspective, color, line, and even in the nature of creative freedom.

Engaging and interactive for both children and adults, Lickle Publishing’s COME LOOK WITH ME series celebrated what Mrs. Blizzard called the "pleasure of shared experience." ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Educational. Look at Art with Children
This is a good book for adults and children. There is a picture on one page and on the next page there is a little bit of information about the picture and some questions to inspire thinking about the picture.

Examples of questions might be- what are the childrenn in this painting feeling? What makes you think so? What is the father in this painting thinking about?

This book inspires young children to look at pictures in a different way. It inspires them to put the story to the painting and to explore what the painting is trying to 'say'. Because of this it is a good introduction to art for young children.

Enjoy.

5-0 out of 5 stars A new way of looking at picture books
We just started "looking" at Ms Blizzard's book, and it has already opened a whole new world for my children to discover. The format (full page color pictures accompanied by historical reference and discussion questions) is as enjoyable for the children as it is for adults. As a homeschool mother I appreciate the opportunity it provides to take a moment and wonder what the artist may have had in mind when they created their work. I also thank the author for the corresponding list of open ended discussion questions she provides. Take a moment to really look at a picture and let the child interpret it. You may be surprized at how they respond. I know I was. It has become especially popular with my 3 year old who considers the children her friends. We look at it daily and can't wait to add to our collection with another edition of the authors works. A wonderful introduction to art appreciation for all ages. Thank you Ms. Blizzard for a wonderful book! This series is sure to be a hit with all who appreciate art. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Worth it, for a fanatic
If you only think window art is 'kinda neat', you probably don't need this refill set. There are a few more colors -- the white and clear make some really pretty Tiffany glass style effects possible, for those interested in spending the extra time -- but really there isn't that much more here than you'll find with your standard set.

I do have a couple issues with the refill. My primary one is that there just isn't enough black! I'm always running out! Also, I've noticed the window art tends to fade in the sun -- to be expected, I suppose -- and also doesn't store very well. Even when stored as recommended by the book, my window art got a little flat and squished looking.

But overall, this set is a lot of fun :) I have my windows decorated with butterflies and tulips, and my shower door decorated with fish. It's an easy, fun way to bring a little bit of color into my house.

5-0 out of 5 stars Klutz does it again!
My 2 children love the Klutz books. The window painting book is their favorite and this refill kit is great! It comes with several colors and the big bottles of black that you need for the outlining. My daughter loved the glittery paints. The kid went through the paints that came with the book in just a few days - their windows are covered with clings, and this refill kit was just what we needed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hours of fun!
My kids love to make window art.
Now I have to get more paints.
It's easy, safe, and creative.
Doesn't stain and easy to peel off and place on another window. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Deja Vu anyone? Many too simplistic...
I know there are only so many things that can be done with a prism, but still...there are other designs that could be combined with prisms to add more interest, challenge and fun. Each page looked like a copy of the one before it, with maybe a new angle or a bigger set of triangles. 5-0 out of 5 stars great for beginners!
If you are looking for an easy and non-specific drawing book about animals, this is the one. It has a wide range of them, from birds to insects, from wild felines to cute pets and farm animals. I would say this book is a great starting point for anyone who is interested in drawing but doesn't know any techniques or doesn't feel capable - yet - of drawing animals instantly. It is perfect for beginners because it does not use hard techniques, such as shading, and with it you are able to discover which kinds of animals you would like to draw more - and then you can go for "Draw 50 Birds" or "Draw 50 Cats", which are two examples that, comparing to this one, are more specific and therefore more challenging books. "Draw 50 Animals" uses the step-by-step method and is very easy to follow. You start with simple lines and shapes, and little by little you turn them into the animal which you thought you would never be able to draw. The result is really amazing, and a great self-esteem increaser for beginners (at least for me it was!). This book is sure to please anyone who uses it and anyone who sees the result of using it! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars It REALLY IS the Coolest Cross-Sections Ever!
We absolutely love this book and so glad it is in our home library. It is on our coffee table and continually poured over. I think this book will be timeless in this family. We love the detail, the layout, the insight and depth it gives on a topic in such an approachable way. Beautifully illustrated and presented. I think it deserves more than just 5 points. It is a winner.

5-0 out of 5 stars One in a Great Series
Illustrator Stephen Biesty carved out his own niche in books by grabbing a concept and doing it well, over and over again. The concept was to take well-known but complex things, like ships, machines, geological formations, and the human body, and make them more understandable by giving a series of drawings, for each object, showing what that object would look like if it were sliced in sections. Kind of sounds like an MRI in medicine! The drawings are bright, colorful, and extremely detailed. With each, there is a short, clearly-written description of the object and some of its aspects. These books make great gifts for older kids, who will get a kick out of the fact that most items show the bathrooms in use, and don't be surprised if an adult or two peeks at the book several times. ... Book Description

I See You, I See Myself, written for young adult readers, examines the early experiences and choices that led Jacob Lawrence to become an artist. In bold colors and precise language, the book describes how the break up of his parents, a period of foster care, reunification with his mother, brother, and sister in Harlem, and the influence of other adults in his community shaped the decisions Lawrence made about his art and his life. The hurdles that he faced -- moving, parent separation, and discrimination -- are ones that challenge many children today. I See You, I See Myself describes how the choices one makes in dealing with these challenges start to shape a personís life. It includes 65 color illustrations of Lawrenceís work, accompanied by photographs documenting his early experiences in the Harlem community.

Jacob Lawrence was born in Atlantic City, New Jersey, in 1917. Moving from there to Easton, Pennsylvania, and finally to Harlem in 1930, his family was part of the Great Migration of African Americans who relocated to the North from the South. Raised among the ìNew Negroesî -- the emerging African American writers, artists, and poets who were a manifestation of the Harlem Renaissance -- Lawrence was one of the first artists trained in and by the African American community in Harlem. At Utopia Childrenís House, a community daycare center, Lawrence received his earliest art instruction from Charles Alston, then a graduate student at Columbia University Teachers College. Lawrence continued to study with Alston throughout the 1930s at the WPA Harlem Art Workshop and at Alstonís studio. He encountered notable artists, writers, and activists, such as Langston Hughes, Ralph Ellison, William Aaron Douglas, Orson Wells, Alain Locke, Addison Bates, and Augusta Savage, who had a profound effect on his development as an artist. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars VIVE CHARLOTTE!
I've fallen in love with Charlotte all over again! Giverny, and now Paris, in the year 1893, come alive through the American Charlotte's amusing journal-a charming collection of observations, illustrations, french words and collages. As she learns about the painters around her-we learn. One can almost hear the sound of sleighs gliding through the streets of Paris on a winters night, and taste the "croquembouche"-the tower of cream puffs Charlotte alluringly descibes on Christmas Eve! Once again, Joan Knight allows the paintings of impressionists (such as Cassat, Monet, MacMonnies and more-) to help tell Charlottes story-to great success. As with all of Mrs. Knights selections, Monet's "The Magpie" is used to great effect-as Charlotte and friend Lizzy, upon their way home from making snow sculptures, stumble upon him painting a winter scene. There is no doubt that the Mrs. Knight, and the illustrator, Melissa Sweet-succeed in making Charlotte's voice very real-she is a most endearing character-one we all would love to have as friend! One can only hope Charlotte's adventures go on from Paris!

5-0 out of 5 stars exquisite visuals and text
I bought this book because I was a huge fan of the first Charlotte in Giverny! Being a lover of all things French, I am equally captivated by this second book in this fabulous series. The text transports the reader to a magical time in our artistic history and the "journal" style of the text is witty and wonderful to read. Each page is truley a work of art--a magical collage that makes me want to create my own scrap book. You truley get lost in Charlotte's world. I read it to my daughter every night. Bravo! ... Book Description

The birth of Jesus was a Glorious Impossible. Like love, it cannot be explained, it can only be rejoiced in. And that is what master storyteller Madeleine L'Engle does in this compellingly written narrative, inspired by Giotto's glorious frescoes from the Scrovegni Chapel in Padua. With a simple clarity that illuminates the life of Christ, Madeleine L'Engle gives eloquent voice to the miracle of God's love. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very glad to see this is still in print
I bought this as a gift for my niece/goddaughter about 11 years ago and have wished I'd got one for myself ever since. It is simply gorgeous with a very moving text. You don't have to be a committed believer to enjoy this lovely book.

5-0 out of 5 stars bought this book for a friend and wished she'd kept it.
As an artist with an Master's degree in painting, I was amazed by the stunning reproductions in this "children's" book, and kept looking at it, and looking at it. The reproductions are so vivid, the text so appropriate, and the book so well designed that I could almost imagine I was walking through the chapel myself. It was the first time I'd seen the frescos in an order the artist intended, which made them even more powerful. Eventually the book went to a friend who admires frescos, but there was such a sense of intimacy in it that I've been searching for another copy for well over a year. The text and the images meld beautifully, and I can honestly say it's the first story of Christ's life I've seen where I felt the illustrations or text didn't "get in the way". Even if you're a fesco fan who's more interested in Giotto than in the story, tear up your check for that expensive art book and buy this first.

5-0 out of 5 stars Jesus' life in great frescoes
As an art educator, church librarian, and special lecture person who links art with religion at my church, I can highly recommend this gorgeous book to you. Madeleine L'Engle is one of my favorite writers and she presents the life of Christ in flowing prose. I even picked up a few facts I did not know. The book is illustrated using various panels from the Scrovegni Chapel in Padua, Italy which adds sumptuousness to its narrative. As a child I was drawn to picture books like this because of their medieval, almost Oriental appearance, so if you wish to influence your children to appreciate a good story well told and illustrated, select this book. The text is on an 9-13 year old level. The "glorious impossible" is something that cannot be explained but only rejoiced in, and I think that sums up God's gift of Jesus to us in a very satisfying way. Enjoy.

5-0 out of 5 stars THought provoking and beautiful
I remember reading this book in the store when it first came out, and it has stuck with me since. Madeline L' Engle gives a thoughtful, sensitive twist on a timeless story, and writes iin such a prose that you could easily imagine reading aloud to young children. I have searched for it for years, and am pleased to discover it in print again.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best children's Bible book I've ever seen
Are you looking for a book to read to your children to share your faith, tell the story of Christ, and inspire your child and yourself to feel the joys of giving, forgiveness, commitment, and love? This is THE book for you. L'Engle's extraodinary and inspiring writing style was never so beautiful as in this faithful retelling of the Gospels. It uses both simple, everyday language and the more complex quotes of the Bible to render a tale that is both easy to read and mystical- a hard task in Children's Bible literature. Her comments on the feelings and activities of both Jesus and others are so spiritually aware that adults will end up thinking about it long after the book is finished. In particular, her thoughts on Judas and his motivation were thoughtful, compassionate, and shed the first positive light I have ever seen given to this character. She brings up points I had never considered--- After Jesus rose He said "Peace be with you" not "Where were you when I needed you" - with such simplicity that one can't help wonder why they didn't consider it before. Along side L'Engle's rich prose is artwork beautiful enough to be awed over by adults, but detailed enough you'll laugh as children comment, "Hey, Lazarus really looks dead!" "The Glorious Impossible" is beautiful, gentle, rich, and assuring- a perfect book to introduce not only Christ but what he taught as well. ... Read more
