5-0 out of 5 stars Examining censorship
Arthur and the gang are not-so-patiently waiting for the next installment in the Scare-Your-Pants-Off Book club. They’ve read all the others in the series, like “Curse of the Mummy’s Breath” and “Zombie Substitute Teacher” and can’t wait for the next one to come out.

The day it’s due to arrive at the library, the gang is poised, having all but camped out overnight to be the first in line to check it out and read it. You can imagine their surprise when they find out that it has been banned from the public library! A group of concerned parents have decided that it’s not appropriate for children and to have had it removed! What’s the gang to do? Is there any way Arthur and his friends can get the book back so everyone can enjoy it? A surprise ending is in store for the reader, making this a fun page-turner.

Marc Brown’s Arthur is one of the best-known characters in children’s literature today. He’s seen on television, has large format picture books and also the Arthur Adventure series, of which this title is #2. Intended for intermediate, independent readers who have graduated to short chapter books, the Arthur books are easy to read, a lot of fun, and encourage readers to think about their world and the different issues of friendship, family or in the case of “Scare-Your-Pants-Off Club”, censorship....

I have used “Scare-Your-Pants-Off Club” in my own classroom many times and found that it’s a great way to stimulate conversation and thinking among my students (one cryptically hinted that maybe we should ban THIS book as well!!). My point in using it as a social studies tool isn’t to agree or disagree with students so much as it is to get them to THINK—- “tell me your feelings about censorship, but back it up with reasoning and research” is how I address the issue. This in turn allows the student not only to voice their own opinion, but to examine their feelings and opinions as well; too many times in our culture we allow other folks to do our thinking for us.

Mr. Brown has done an excellent job of taking a very complicated issue in our society and presenting it to young readers in an understandable and intelligent way. I appreciate and applaud authors who not only aim to entertain their readers, but encourage them to think about themselves and their world. Hats off, Mr. Brown!! You’ve done it again!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Authur and the scare your pants off club .

Book Description

Marc Brown's beloved, bespectacled Arthur, a storybook favorite among

primary graders for more than twenty years, is now a hero to the millions of

preschoolers who watch his daily show on PBS television. To reach this younger

audience, Marc Brown has pulled out all the stops and created a word book that

truly lives up to its name--it's really helpful! In this big, exciting

book Marc Brown has pictured and labled more than 1,000 everyday words in

environments ranging from the zoo to Mom's office. And, as a bonus not found in

any other word book, each page makes learning a playful game by exploring the

imagination and reinforcing early-learning concepts in a fun way. Here's a book

that grows with the child from toddler to first grade--use it first to help

develop a baby's spoken vocabulary and later to teach counting, colors, the

alphabet, opposites, shapes, and other basics. When "back to school" rolls

around this year, Arthur, his sister D.W., and their friends and family are

ready to make it more fun than ever!

5-0 out of 5 stars So Much to Look At, So Much to Learn!
A large book filled to the brim with words to learn. The layout is enjoyable to look at, with a large 2-page spread scene surrounded on the border with smaller related images - all labelled. The scenes show Arthur and his family at school, at the grocery store, at work, at play, reading, during the seasons, at the mall, at Grandpa Dave's farm, when Arthur grows up, etc. My 2 year old loves Arthur and loves looking at this book. There are so many words! Such a helpful, educational, and entertaining book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Endless entertainment and learning!
My one year old LOVES this book. I'm sure it's ideal for older children just learning to read, but she really enjoys pointing to things and having me name them for her. Every object and animal you can think of is pictured in the book. There is not really a story, but each page has a "theme" and related pictures and words. We love it! And she is constantly learning new words as a result.

5-0 out of 5 stars It is my daughter's favorite book
This book holds the attention of my 1 1/2 yr old for a half hour or more! Do I really need to say any more? She loves to point to the pictures and have me read the names. The best thing about the book is that I expect to use it for a few years. As she grows, the book has more to offer - ABC's, 123's, puzzles and plenty to spark the imagination.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for preschoolers
My daughter loves to point at the pictures and say the words that goes with them. The words are put into familiar settings (home, grocery store etc.) She learns new words and enjoys recognizing the ones she already knows. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A winner!
My four year old son has 3 precious "comfort" reads and this is one of them. We've read it so many times together he knows it by heart. It's a great book because not only does it hold his interest (he never tires of the flaps) but it also reinforces the alphabet, counting and teaches him about opposites. And it's also a fun book for me to read aloud (over and over . . . )

4-0 out of 5 stars Like most big lift the flap books, fun and educational
It seems like most all of this kind of big lift the flap books are a little similar---a page about letters, one about numbers, an opposite page and so forth, but they are also all pretty well done and big child pleasers! My 2 sons really like this one. Their favorite part is the "book within a book" of The Three Little Pigs. It got my older son interested in that fairy tale, which we then read in different versions, and then in fairy tales in general! One thing to note---the characters of Arthur and Francine and all of the gang seem younger in this book than in the show, more like preschool versions of themselves.

5-0 out of 5 stars I had to buy two!

fought over it so much that I had to buy a
second copy! An absolute must-have for all

5-0 out of 5 stars A Good Improvement on The Teleplay
This book is based on an episode on the "Arthur" T.V. by Joe Fallon, and it's an excellent enhancement to an already good story. Rather than watching the T.V., readers are made to use their imaginations as part of the story, or even if they have seen the show, use their imaginations to fill in the details. Marc pays excellent attention to detail and although most of the credit goes to Fallon, those who saw the show will still find it worthwhile to read the book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Arthur and the Poetry Contest
Arthur and the Poetry Contest is book number 18 in the"Arthur Chapter Book" series. It is written in chapter bookformat for children who are ready to read on their own. In this storyFern dares Arthur and his friends to enter the poetry writing contest at the local library, but writing poems turns out to be harder than they thought. Will Arthur and friends be able to write poems good enough to be read out loud? Brown continues to demonstrate an understanding of timing and flow of text as well as an awareness of what is of interest to children. The few black & white illustrations help bridge the gap between the easy reader level and a junior fiction. This sturdy beginner chapter book is sure to be a hit with Arthur fans. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Say the Magic Word
My 16-month-old daughter has loved this book for quite some time now. So much so that she learned to say "Arthur" before she learned her own name! It is clearly her absolute favorite amongst her many books. She first used this book to practice turning pages and enjoy the pictures. Soon she progressed to lifting flaps. For the last couple of months she has spent a great deal of time patiently sliding the playfigures in and out of their slots, developing her fine motor skills in the process. She has now become a big fan of the Arthur show on PBS. This book, and "Kiss Hello, Kiss Goodbye," go with us everywhere. We highly recommend both. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars This one might hit close to home....
Are you a cell-phone toting, work-a-holic parent? Busy cutting business deals on the soccer field? Then this book will leave you feeling a little sheepish. I know of quite a few sports parents who could stand to read this book for the lesson it teaches. As for the kids, maybe what they learn is that they should keep trying their best no matter how miserable their coach is!

3-0 out of 5 stars Plot Inconsistencies Between Book and Show
"Arthur and the Best Coach Ever" is the fourth of six books in the 2001 Arthur Good Sports series. This is a great series that teaches kids about sportsmanship in an interesting as well as humorous way. However, this book, "Arthur and the Best Coach Ever," shows are startling lack of coordination between those working on the television show and those were developing the book series.

Both the television story and the book share a couple basic plot points. The soccer coach for Lakewood Elementary is no longer able to coach the team and Ed Crosswire is brought in as a replacement. In both versions, none of the kids are very happy, as they liked the old coach and Ed's coaching abilities are rather questionable.

The similarities stop about right there. In the book, Ed is presented as an inept coach who knows nothing about soccer and is always ignoring the team while he tries to run his automotive business from the sidelines. The team members begin to feel like they don't care about them, although really he's just caught in a pickle because he has no understanding of basic soccer concepts, or how to coach a team.

The exact opposite happens in the television episode. In the TV version, Ed seems to be quite knowledgable of soccer, even having played in the past, and tries to run the team like a machine, putting them through overly demanding drills.

Overall, "Arthur and the Best Coach Ever" is an okay story and in my opinion, somewhat better than the television version. Still, the lack of synergy between the TV show and the book causes confusion among followers of the seires and I'm not entirely certain what exactly this particular book teaches kids about good sportsmanship. Also, some of the humor found in the other "Arthur" books is missing. Pass on this one, and try one of the other, better, "Arthur" books instead.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great show

4-0 out of 5 stars Krensky Makes it Bearable
Overall, I wasn't too impressed by the television version of this episode. There was a lot of bad dialogue, it's hard to watch any season five episode with some of the voice actors they had and it was painful to watch the Brain attempting to be funny. However, the wonderful Stephen Krensky actually manages to make a bad story into one that's actually kind of fun to read. He does so by adding details that weren't in the television version and adding extra dialogue to enhance parts o the story. Also, he smartly removed a very bad gag involving Brain's brain telepathically communcating with other brains. A good read for all Arthur fans. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars It's D.W.! And a Gerbil! Lots to Love.
This one is titled as an Arthur story, but it's really D.W. who steals the show. She's asked to take care of a preschool pet, a gerbil named Speedy, over the Christmas holiday. (A situation that may be familiar to many readers.) Although Arthur's helpful to her, he also discourages her idea of teaching the gerbil tricks. But this doesn't stop D.W.! In addition to the good, original story, the book also includes wonderful illustrations and dedicated readers will be able to spot the name of at least one of Marc Brown's children.
