5-0 out of 5 stars engaging young adult Christian novel
The female teenage Christian rock band Redemption has begun climbing the ladder of success and even becoming recognized in malls while on tour. However, the trio of high school students, Chloe Miller, Allie Curtis, and Laura Mitchell has other concerns besides the music though they each trust in the Lord to guide them. Allie and Laura wonder about what to wear at the prom while Chloe knows that she really likes twenty-one years old Jeremy Baxter of the Iron Cross band.

A fellow student back Harrison High sends emails to Chloe asking for help in finding her way to God. However, Chloe has a difficult time turning the other cheek as Tiffany Knight beat her up a couple of years ago. Will Chloe, who refuses to open the emails, forgive and assist Tiffany on the path as the singer knows God expects of her or will she continue to believe that Tiffany could never find the Lord?

This is an engaging young adult Christian novel that follows the trials, tribulations, and beliefs of three young ladies on tour. The story line is predominately told by Chloe, but fans get a deep look at all three teens plus their retinue and the members of Iron Cross. FACE THE MUSIC is a warm tale that brings to life the importance that anyone can be saved if people take a chance on risking rejection by their peers but acceptance by the Lord.

5-0 out of 5 stars Diary of a Teenage Girl - Face the Music : Diary Number 8 (D
i personally thought that the book was very interesting as i really touched me. i was not as lucky as chloe though. the person who died that was my friend was not a christian. i was not really consumed with guilt though i felt a twinge of it. Anyway, enough of me. jeremy and chloe's relationship gets interesting and i really hope to see what will happen in the next diary of a teenage girl-Kim. it is a really good book as chloe matures and you'll see a different side of her as she becomes more feminine. ireally loved it and enjoyed it and finished it in 2 hours and have since reread it loads of times. 5-0 out of 5 stars Science made EASY!
This book is simply great. I bought several of Jean Potter's other books so when I found her name on line, I decided to buy this one. It is everything I thougt it would be and MORE! I love art, but never thought the two mixed. This is a book for every kid, teacher and parent!

5-0 out of 5 stars I never realized how beautiful science can be.
I had never really thought how beautiful and mysterious and colorful and delightful science could be. This book inspires me, a person who has never really liked science all that much. Now I do! And I will pass that on to my kids when we do the Chromatography Art Experiment and separate colors on absorbant paper. Can't wait!

4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful way to integrate science and art!
What a wonderful and unique approach to science education! This book is jammed full of one-page "art experiments." The key is to use art projects to learn some science principles. Among many of the ideas to learn are dissolving, symmetry, reflecting light, gravity and friction. The only drawback is that the book could benefit from an introduction on the inquiry-based approach to learning...From The Science Spiders(TM) Newsletter.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great resource book for preschool teachers
Like all of Mary Ann Kohl's books, this one is easily readable, with 1 activity listed per page, including pictures of the activity. It provides a reminder that science doesn't only happen at the science table! I often make my student interns choose an activity from this book (or MathArts)as the activities are open ended, process-oriented, and explained step by step. A great resource. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Doesn't Do the Artist Justice
Maybe it's because I'd just read "Uncle Andy's"-- another children's book about a famous artist--that I so disliked this one. Where the former is light and hip and fun, the latter is heavy-handed, preachy and uninspiring. The tone is far too serious for the subject, and for the age range of its intended audience. The illustrations, while interesting to adults, don't seem vibrant enough to catch a child's attention.

Finally, there's a minor event in the story that could, and should have been omitted or changed to something else: in order to get the child narrator alone with his uncle Romare, the author uses the literary device of having Aunt Nettie receive a phone call that an old aunt has died and she has to go to the funeral. What a thoughtless detail that cannot possibly remain minor! This book, remember, is directed at four to eight year olds. At the latter end of that range, some children *might* be coming to an awareness of death--but it's not a given, and certainly not the case for a four-year-old. Just the word funeral is a show-stopper. You can be sure it won't be glossed over by any curious child, and so we're stopped in our tracks, diverted from the main story, while we veer off into a discussion of funerals and death. I'm not saying we need to avoid these discussions--far from it-- but in a book about an artist and the joy of art it's intrusive and inappropriate.

I bought this book, along with Uncle Andy's, for my two grandsons, aged 4 and 6. I'm not giving them this one, at least not yet. I don't want to spoil the fun of the Warhol book, and the death talk can wait until they're ready for it.

5-0 out of 5 stars This Is The Perfect Book
When I bought this book for my kid, I didn't quite know what to expect. I was very excited to find that this is a book that I can enjoy with my child. This wonderful book with a heart-warming story and beautiful pictures was able to do something I thought no book could: teach something important to a child and allow the child to have fun. This book is good for kids of all ages and for parents of all ages too. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book
This is a great book to introduce children to the paintings of Henri Matisse. Best of all the rhyming text captures a childs attention and helps with language development. As an art teacher and a soon to be mother, this book is on the top of my list.

5-0 out of 5 stars cute -- it works!

Book Description

The birth of Jesus was a Glorious Impossible. Like love, it cannot be explained, it can only be rejoiced in. And that is what master storyteller Madeleine L'Engle does in this compellingly written narrative, inspired by Giotto's glorious frescoes from the Scrovegni Chapel in Padua. With a simple clarity that illuminates the life of Christ, Madeleine L'Engle gives eloquent voice to the miracle of God's love. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very glad to see this is still in print
I bought this as a gift for my niece/goddaughter about 11 years ago and have wished I'd got one for myself ever since. It is simply gorgeous with a very moving text. You don't have to be a committed believer to enjoy this lovely book.

5-0 out of 5 stars bought this book for a friend and wished she'd kept it.
As an artist with an Master's degree in painting, I was amazed by the stunning reproductions in this "children's" book, and kept looking at it, and looking at it. The reproductions are so vivid, the text so appropriate, and the book so well designed that I could almost imagine I was walking through the chapel myself. It was the first time I'd seen the frescos in an order the artist intended, which made them even more powerful. Eventually the book went to a friend who admires frescos, but there was such a sense of intimacy in it that I've been searching for another copy for well over a year. The text and the images meld beautifully, and I can honestly say it's the first story of Christ's life I've seen where I felt the illustrations or text didn't "get in the way". Even if you're a fesco fan who's more interested in Giotto than in the story, tear up your check for that expensive art book and buy this first.

5-0 out of 5 stars Jesus' life in great frescoes
As an art educator, church librarian, and special lecture person who links art with religion at my church, I can highly recommend this gorgeous book to you. Madeleine L'Engle is one of my favorite writers and she presents the life of Christ in flowing prose. I even picked up a few facts I did not know. The book is illustrated using various panels from the Scrovegni Chapel in Padua, Italy which adds sumptuousness to its narrative. As a child I was drawn to picture books like this because of their medieval, almost Oriental appearance, so if you wish to influence your children to appreciate a good story well told and illustrated, select this book. The text is on an 9-13 year old level. The "glorious impossible" is something that cannot be explained but only rejoiced in, and I think that sums up God's gift of Jesus to us in a very satisfying way. Enjoy.

5-0 out of 5 stars THought provoking and beautiful
I remember reading this book in the store when it first came out, and it has stuck with me since. Madeline L' Engle gives a thoughtful, sensitive twist on a timeless story, and writes iin such a prose that you could easily imagine reading aloud to young children. I have searched for it for years, and am pleased to discover it in print again.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best children's Bible book I've ever seen
Are you looking for a book to read to your children to share your faith, tell the story of Christ, and inspire your child and yourself to feel the joys of giving, forgiveness, commitment, and love? This is THE book for you. L'Engle's extraodinary and inspiring writing style was never so beautiful as in this faithful retelling of the Gospels. It uses both simple, everyday language and the more complex quotes of the Bible to render a tale that is both easy to read and mystical- a hard task in Children's Bible literature. Her comments on the feelings and activities of both Jesus and others are so spiritually aware that adults will end up thinking about it long after the book is finished. In particular, her thoughts on Judas and his motivation were thoughtful, compassionate, and shed the first positive light I have ever seen given to this character. She brings up points I had never considered--- After Jesus rose He said "Peace be with you" not "Where were you when I needed you" - with such simplicity that one can't help wonder why they didn't consider it before. Along side L'Engle's rich prose is artwork beautiful enough to be awed over by adults, but detailed enough you'll laugh as children comment, "Hey, Lazarus really looks dead!" "The Glorious Impossible" is beautiful, gentle, rich, and assuring- a perfect book to introduce not only Christ but what he taught as well. ... Read more

Widely respected for his stunningly astute observations of dogs (more specifically, of the majestic Weimaraner), William Wegman once again dazzles with Puppies. Here Wegman chronicles three generations of Weimaraners with his insightful commentary and exceptional photography. Wegman's love for his dogs is expressed in every photograph and in every line of his awe-filled text. Speaking about his second Weimaraner, Fay, the author says, "She looked like she had wandered out of a Rousseau painting. Those luminous yellow eyes."

Fay's radiance inspired Wegman to greater creative depths: he began dressing her up to appear almost human, a common theme in his photographs. Fay starred in many Wegman titles, including ABC and Cinderella. It is Fay's children, and later her grandchildren, who take the center stage in William Wegman's Puppies. Wegman's photographs are, as always, astonishing, capturing the beauty and individualism of each puppy. He labels his photographs with humorous bylines: a puppy sitting in a planter is labeled "Pup Pot." The exceptional physique of the Weimaraner becomes more pronounced as the puppies grow; at two weeks, the puppies are almost extraterrestrial in appearance, with large ears and wrinkled skins. But they are still exquisite, and the photos capture every expression and posture. Wegman has the utmost respect for his dogs, and his subjects are in turn fully content and relaxed in the presence of their photographer. Wegman has the ability to draw us exceptionally close to his dogs, and this wonderful collection captures the true spirit and beauty of the Weimaraner. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars William Wegman's Wonderful Weimeraners
William Wegman is one of America's most important photographers, and Puppies is a wonderful, dear, sweet, happy and tragic book, all at the same time. Wegman's reputation may be in photography, but this beautiful book of photos proves that he is a great storyteller as well. Not only is it a picture book,it is a touching storybook of the lives of his beloved dogs. Sometimes that love gives me the creeps, but of course,I have never lived with dogs. Cats,on the other hand... A great book, get it!

4-0 out of 5 stars Very cute book, great for puppie lovers
I picked up this book the other day, and It is by far the cutest out of all the Wegman books. You always see the full grown dogs in his prints, but this book puts together the puppies. There is a touching/nice story to follow from page to page, that gives meaning on to why he chose dogs to photograph, and how much they mean to him. The photo's are very cute, and it is a simple book, nice for children. I love Wegman's work, and this one is just plain cute, a change from his fashion prints with all the costumes, this book just takes a look at the puppies, plain and simple. ^^
The only thing I wish, is that there was a bigger showcase of pictures.

5-0 out of 5 stars A love story in pictures and words. Wonderful bedside book.
There isn't much to say about this loving photo essay except that the photos are wonderful and peaceful, and the prose engaging. I like to have the Wegman books near my bed for when I am wound up and unable to sleep. They are very calming and sweet. I always appreciate the deep respect and love Wegman displays toward his dogs, in both his prose and photographic work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cute stories, great pictures!
Wegman fans will truly enjoy this light reading, picture book. The puppies are adorable. Actually, I'm not even that much of a fan of his work but this book appeals.

4-0 out of 5 stars Wegman Delights with His Puppies yet again...

4-0 out of 5 stars As Much Fun Now As When I was a Kid
I grew up with this book and never knew of the others in the series. Seeing as my daughter loves dogs I had to buy this when I saw it in this new edition.

An opera singer has moved into the house next to Harry's. The singer practices all day long, singing loud and high. Harry does not like this sound. Harry tries a number of ways to get her to stop. These do not please his family. But finally, a good way is found and everyone is happy.

As a parent, one of the things I like about this book is that it is clear that Harry is not being good when he howls, leads cows or a marching band, or other tricks. Although we want Harry to succeed, we also want it to be in the right and good way. This book knows the difference.

I loved this book as a kid and I still do. My daughter loves it (hopefully my son will too).

4-0 out of 5 stars harry and the lady next door
I like Harry and the lady Next Door because Harry doesnt like her sining. I also like this book because Harry brings all these animals. home and the lady sings louder than them. These are reasons why you should read these books.

5-0 out of 5 stars great for beginners!
If you are looking for an easy and non-specific drawing book about animals, this is the one. It has a wide range of them, from birds to insects, from wild felines to cute pets and farm animals. I would say this book is a great starting point for anyone who is interested in drawing but doesn't know any techniques or doesn't feel capable - yet - of drawing animals instantly. It is perfect for beginners because it does not use hard techniques, such as shading, and with it you are able to discover which kinds of animals you would like to draw more - and then you can go for "Draw 50 Birds" or "Draw 50 Cats", which are two examples that, comparing to this one, are more specific and therefore more challenging books. "Draw 50 Animals" uses the step-by-step method and is very easy to follow. You start with simple lines and shapes, and little by little you turn them into the animal which you thought you would never be able to draw. The result is really amazing, and a great self-esteem increaser for beginners (at least for me it was!). This book is sure to please anyone who uses it and anyone who sees the result of using it! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars This is a good book
I bought this book a little after Christmas because I found myself loving the movie. Thinking the book would be better (because all books are better!) I read it. I was totally wrong. True, the book is good, but 1. Galleria (or Deborah Gregory, the author) CANNOT write good songs. I'm sorry, she can't. They are very poorly written and if I sat down and thought I could think of something better. 2. The lingo is also very immature and hard to understand. Otherwise, the plot is good and the characters are good.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Cheetah Girls
This book is wonderful though sometimes it is hard to understand. Thankfully Ms. Gregory included a glossary so those of us who don't understand Galleria and her friend's language can keep up. Something that I especially like about this book is the fact that it is different from the movie thought there are some scenes that are the same. It's boring to read a book that is word for word the same as the movie I just watched last night. Go Cheetahs!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Book EVER!!
Hey i'm courtney(...).My big sister bought this book for me after i watched the movie and i loved all for stories. The book is about 5 girls who dream about being singing sensations. If you wanna be a singer you MUST read this book NOW!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A book for girls with singing dreams
The Cheetah Girls is an amazingly written story about five girls with the common but amazing dream to become singers. Galleria, who is kind of the leader of the group, is a great singer. She is the leader Cheetah because she writes some of the songs.
Chanel, also known as Chuchie or Miss Chuchie Frita, is Galleria's best friend. She is a great singer too, and is sometimes jelous of Galleria because she is the leader.
Anginette and Aquanette are twin sisters. They are the best singers in the group and are trying to get used to New York City.
Dorinda is a foster child who is the best dancer in the entire group. She is a very caring girl and I think she just might have gone through the most in this story.
This book is a book for girls with singing dreams. It will inspire girls all around to never give up. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Marvelous fun
This CD is splendid. Not only did the creators pick fun songs but they also had them sung by native speakers. The kids learn very quickly which country has what feel by the singer announcing who s/he is and from which country. Having the song in English after the original allows for everyone to sing along. Great intro to world music!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Fun Trip Around The World!!
Talk about multicultural! This music is a delight! Most of the songs are sung by children. Each singer introduces him or herself in English as well as their native language, then they sing a traditonal folk song! Each piece is short, the music is
very catchy! My son was 3 when we got this and after 1,00's of listening hours...at 6, he still loves it! He has learned the names of countries, continents as well as foreign words!
His teachers have borrowed it and it has brought many magical musical moments to many children!

5-0 out of 5 stars Children songs from all around the world
If you want to widen your children's horizons, this is the book for you. There are 43 songs from as many different countries, and almost as many different languages. Each song is sung in native and English language. With included maps, data on each country, various letters (Indian,Chinese,Arabic),and a sing-along cassette or CD it's not only fun but also something to learn from. 5-0 out of 5 stars Every child WILL love to create and draw!
As a child who loved to draw - but was all "thumbs" in drawing - Emberley's Thumbprintbook was an amazing gift. Suddenly, I could duplicate the art in a drawing book and then go on to create my own shapes and creations. As I got older, I moved onto his other wonderful art books (such as Red, Puple, Orange, Green), but my thumbprints always remained my favorite.

This is a simple but enlivening art book for preschool and elementary school aged kids. I used it over 25 years ago and it is still a huge success with kids today. Don't miss it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Thumbodies are the best!
This is one of the most simple and entertaining art books to be found for the younger set, or those who just love to doodle. I am fourteen, and I still enjoy pulling this book out to create thumbprint pictures with my siblings. All you need is an ink pad, some paper, and a pen to begin making the fun characters Mr. Emberley presents here, leaving the kitchen table much cleaner than it would be after finger painting. And since the pictures consist of your thumbprint and a few simple lines and dots, children can begin trying to make these as soon as they are able to grasp a pencil.
Once you get started, the possibilities are endless, both on and off of paper - we recently made a T-Shirt for a friend's new baby with our thumbprint drawings all over it and the words "Thumbody loves you!" Like in all of Ed Emberley's books, the images shown are only starting points to encourage additional creative ideas to come forth from wee Picassos everywhere. I would highly recommend this for all toddlers.

5-0 out of 5 stars FOR ANY CHILD AFRAID OF ART.....
For any child afraid he or she cant draw well.... just buy them this book, and watch how much pride they have in what they can accomplish. This book is very basic and shows little characters you can make with a thumbprint (or circle or blob) but dont let your "limited adult imagination" think that is just a few things... there are TONS of things you can draw!!!!!! and they are very easy. I think this is a perfect first drawing book...or for a child who is already convinced that "I cant draw" i hear kids say that and i think its so sad.... this book is really a positive thing :)

5-0 out of 5 stars A great one for younger audiences.
All the Emberly books are worthwhile, and this one is definitely skewed toward the younger side of the 4-8 age group. Even younger than four will enjoy this. If they can hold a pencil and draw dots and lines, they can make drawings. In fact, younger kids might enjoy just making the thumbprints and watching you turn them into people and animals.

Older kids may grow tired of it quickly but that's okay, becuse the Green, Orange, Red and Purple Emberly books are for them!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent gift idea!
I had this book as a child and recently rediscovered it. It makes an excellent gift for a young child with a few art supplies. I have found children 3 and up to thoroughly enjoy this book. Highly recommended. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best way to spend a rainy afternoon
I spent hours creating entire worlds based on these books. They are a wonderful introduction to basic drawing skills and are FUN!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars You can draw!!
These books are the greatest. I own all of the Emberly books. They are fun for adults and kids alike. You are never too old or young to learn to draw. This book will make you the most hip doodler in school or at work. Ed makes it really easy!
This book is from a series of 4 books from Emberly are the easiest books on drawing there are, period. Anyone young or old can learn to draw some great critters and vehicles from these books. ANYONE! All of his Big Color books are great, (They are a series, each named after a color). This one is famous for the easy way it shows you how to draw step by step a great big green dragon, but it is simple when you do it his way. This book includes a number of fun ideas including Frankenstein, sailboat and trees. He even shows you how to make yours unique rather than a copy of his drawings. You can be the doodle hero of your classroom or office after using this book. He does it simply using very simple steps, lines, and basic shapes to start you off. My favorite in the series would be the Purple Book, but they are all good.
If you want to move up from here and learn the terminology of what you are doing, and really become an accomplished artist, the next step after these are the terrific books by "Jack Hamm". If you just want to have some fun, get this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Kids love this series

Book Description

Frank Howell's paintings dazzle the viewer with their luminous colors and haunting images.A unique chronicler of the native people and natural beauty of the Southwest, Howell pulls us into a spiritually charged world resonant with multiple meanings.Whether he's painting a pair of hands, a bird in flight or the face of an old woman, Howell can look upon the familiar and see something no one else sees. His sense of wonder and his passion make his often solitary figures enormously expressive; they inhabit a physically spare but spiritually rich universe that Howell reveals through his extraordinary artistry.

This stunning overview of Frank Howell's work includes full-color reproductions of almost eighty paintings, many exclusive to this collection, as well as black-and-white photographs of the artist at work.Michael French's account of Howell's personal and professional development, based on extensive interviews, offers intriguing insights into the man behind the work.In addition, Frank Howell shares his thoughts on many of his paintings, affording a unique glimpse into a special universe, which this contemporary shaman evokes with power, passion and profound beauty. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Spellbinding Art
This book opened my eyes toa very different art form.Even after reading the book ,I don't exactly know what to make of it except that I found it interesting and really enjoyable.Obviously, Howell's subjects, techniques and realism are spellbinding.I guess what bothers me about this art is that I do not possess the faith expressed behind the art.Mother Earth, spirituality of ancestors ,circles of life, dream catchers, shamens, animal spirits, etc.,really escape me ;but that does not prevent me from enjoying the art.The imagination that comes through the painting "Fruit from the Light" coupled with the color, lighting and finess in the hair results in a painting that you just want to look at and enjoy for its own beauty. To me it doesn't matter who she is, what is on her mind, what does the painter want us to feel;I think that is to be determined by the viewer.
However,I must say that there is a great amount of mood running through his paintings which I find hard to describe.Haunting, bearing witness, distance, come to mind;but nothing such as happiness, hope, anticipation, peace, anger, etc. The images seem to say "This is me,and that's it ." I am looking forward to seeing more of his work.
So, if you like Indian Art with a strong slant on realism and a little mysticism, you should enjoy this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Breathtaking renderings of Native American subjects
Frank Howell's work will take your breath away. This beautiful edition contains both poetry and a wonderful collection of Howell's sensitive and luminous work. You will find yourself looking at it again and again! ... Read more
