Book Description

Gandhi was born in Porbandar, India on October 2, 1869.A shy, serious boy, Gandhi was married at age 13.The marriage had been arranged by his parents. The Gandhis would have four children.Gandhi studied law in London. He returned to India in 1891 to practice law, but had little success. In 1893 Gandhi traveled to South Africa to do some legal work.Almost immediately upon his arrival, he was abused because he was an Indian who claimed his rights as a British subject. He saw all Indians suffered from discrimination. His law assignment was for one year, but he stayed in South Africa for 21 years to work for Indian rights.Gandhi developed a method of direct social action, based upon principles of courage, nonviolence, and truth, which he called Satagraha. In this method, the way people behave is more important than what they achieve.Gandhi led many campaigns for Indian rights in South Africa. He edited a newspaper, promoted civil disobedience campaigns, and organized a strike among Indian miners. He was arrested many times by the British, but his efforts brought important reforms. Gandhi worked for the British when he felt justice was on their side.He was decorated by them for paramedic work in the Anglo-Boer War of 1899-1902 and the Zulu Rebellion of 1906.In 1914, Gandhi returned to India.Within 5 years, he became the leader of the Indian nationalist movement.Gandhi led a Satyagraha campaign in 1919 that succeeded in preventing the passage of a bill making it unlawful to organize opposition to the government. The massacre of almost 400 Indians by British troops made Gandhi even more determined to develop Satyagraha and win independence through nonviolent resistance.Gandhi fasted to impress people with the need to be nonviolent. In 1920, Gandhi began a program of hand spinning and weaving to address both economic and political issues. He led his followers on a 240-mile march to the sea in 1930, to protest a law making it illegal to possess salt not bought from the government.During WWII, Gandhi continued his struggle for India's freedom through nonviolent disobedience to British rule.He was often jailed.Altogether he spent seven years in prison for political activity. He believed that it was honorable to go to jail for a good cause.India was granted freedom in 1947 but was partitioned into India and Pakistan.Rioting between Hindus and Muslims followed. On January 13, 1948, at the age of 78, Gandhi began his last fast. His purpose was to end the bloodshed between Hindus, Muslims, and other groups.Five days later, when leaders agreed to stop the fighting, Gandhi broke his fast.Twelve days later, he was assassinated by a Hindu fanatic who opposed Gandhi's program of tolerance for all creeds and religions. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Most comprehensive telling of the Hunley yet to date!
Civil War buffs, 21st Century scientists, teachers, archaeologists, and readers looking for a good "yarn" alike will be absolutely riveted by this book.In the most comprehensive telling of the H.L. Hunley story yet to date, Walker's extensive research includes a variety of primary sources such as letters, African American testimony from Naval Court inquiries, and family photos to highlight the Civil War era - the "first" part of the story.Next, through a subtle color in pages of the text, Walker continues the story in modern times, detailing the 2000 raising of the sunken submarine.Color photographs showing every step of the recovery and excavation (including new scientific technologies), and thorough explanations by the actual recovery divers make this a unique "you-are-there" kind of book.A poignant end to the story is the facial reconstruction of Hunley's crew, and photographs of the funeral caisson taking the crew members to their final resting place in Charleston's Magnolia Cemetary.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating, readable, colorful account
This is a great story, and each part separately is great, but, together, they make an amazing whole.
The H.L. Hunley was the first submarine to sink another ship, early in 1864, in Charleston Harbor.Built to help the beleagured Confederacy, she was long, narrow and brilliantly designed. Not brilliantly enough, however. Her successful mission was also her last, and she sank into the deep, facing an even longer wait that the Titanic for rediscovery.
Great photographs, compelling reading. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The sad story of Hiroshima
It was so sad that the first A-Bomb was dropped in Hiroshima, Japan and ended up killing more than 100,000 people. This book gives a lot of information into this tradegy. It gives helpful information about the background of Hiroshima and why there was conflict, the invention of the atomic bomb, the reconstruction and restoration process, and the high price of progress. I know that people were badly burned by high temperatures and got scars. Also it ruined the neighbors, buildings, people including jobs in Hiroshima when so many people were wounded. The war in WWII was taken over by Japanese people to get to Korea and attack them and get their independence. This occurred when Japanese expansion went through China and attacked. The Allies U.S., USSR and Great Britain agreed that Europe and Japan should soon be democratic and not use communism. For the second time, the atomic bomb was dropped in Nagasaki and it was more powerful than the Hiroshima bomb. Less people died, and the buildings were completely destroyed. Many years later, Hiroshima had built modern buildings. The dome was blasted with the Atomic Bomb in 1945 and more than 55 years later, they can't even finish this dome because I know they will never build it much. Japan began to rebuild its city. Jobs were created, buidings were restored and the people got on with their lives. However, there was a protest from the U.S. government about the expansion tactics. Japan attacked Pearl Harbor that is in US and it was the Japanese aircrafts that attacked it. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn more about the events taking place before the bombing at Hiroshima and the effects of this event on the rest of ythe world. This is a realistic account of the facts as they occcurred during and before Hiroshima and the conflicts that still exist today. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful
For a school research project I researched on the ancient beginnings of China. This book helped me tremendously in writing it. I found great information on the ancient dynasties in China and a lot of information I could not find any where else. If you are doing any type of reasearch project or essay on the dynasties of China I would select this book for you right off the bat.

1-0 out of 5 stars not helpful at all
i used this for a school history project, and i had many questions in mind that i wanted to answer by reading this book. None of them were answered. Either my questions were to complicated, or this book was very unhelpful. (most probable is the second one) ... Read more
