5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for toddlers
My daughter, now 23 months, has loved this book since she was 14 months old. This book has made her even more fascinated with airplanes. When she sees an airplane she always points it out and asks to go on an airplane. She asks for us to read this book daily (my husband and I have it memorized). The illustrations are wonderfully bright in color. The text is simple but written well for young children to understand the pictures. This is one book I don't mind reading everyday!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun, fun, fun...
I have a two year old son, and he loves this book. The pictures are great, the descriptions are easy for him to understand, and are short enough to hold his attention. All of Byron Barton's books are great, but this one is his fave rave!!!!!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for airport and airplane fans
This time around Barton tackles a day in the life of a passenger plane traveler. We start out with passengers arriving at the airport and go through all the various activities that take place through take off. What happens to the luggage, getting the plane ready for take off, etc. are covered. A cross-section of a jet plane shows the various parts including toilet (which children think is hilarious) and also shows staff working to clean the plane before the passengers board.

This would be a great book to read to a child who is preparing to travel by airplane. It would be great preparation to understand all that goes into preparing the plane, what is happening as the people are waiting to board, etc. It would also be a great book to take on the flight as entertainment, especially since it is a thin paperback and lightweight.

Lots of people are in the airport and are of all ages and races.

Barton also has a board book about planes which depicts different kinds of airplanes, titled "Planes". "Airport" focuses just on jet passenger airplanes and the airport itself. If you enjoy this book I recommend Barton's other books as well.

My baby loves this book, he must love the illustrations. My four year old loves the book for the content. We are frequent airplane travelers and we have made air travel an adventure, always discussing all that goes on and intentionally making it a real fun experience. It has been successful so far because we don't experience air travel stress with either of our children. Both look at a trip to the airport as an adventure in and of itself. This book gives us more opportunities to discuss flying when we are at home, in between trips.

This is the only children's book I have ever seen that discusses airports and what goes on there.

Great, a must have!

4-0 out of 5 stars a gentle introduction to the airport for young children
This book is a good introduction to the sequence of events a child can expect to see when they take an airplane flight. The storyline, such as it is, unobtrusively follows a young boy and his family through the process -- arriving at the airport in a bus, standing in the ticket line, sitting in the waiting area, boarding the plane and finding your seat, and getting buckled in. There are also picture showing the crew preparing the airplane, the control tower okaying the plane for takeoff, the pilot and crew in the cockpit, and the jet taking off. There is a very nice cross-section showing the jet's fuselage, cargo hold, etc. Each picture is a brightly colored two-page spread, and my two-year old enjoys this book.

My quibbles are small. It would have been nice to see some more children in the pictures; and in one scene we see the little boy buckling up in a window seat on the lefthand side of the plane, but on takeoff we see him look ing out a window on the righthand side. A small enough mistake, but what if a child notices this and begins to worry that airplanes do not obey the laws of physics or logic? Will you be prepared to advance explanations that will not confuse?

Seriously, it's a nice book that should inform small children, and even help them when they first experience an airport.

5-0 out of 5 stars My son's favorite book
My 2 1/2 year old son loved this book so much when we checked it out at the library, that I had to buy him his own copy. The text is simple and easy for him to understand and the pictures are bright and simple, yet complete and accurate in their representation of a real airport experience. He has fun going through the book over and over again looking for new things, asking me what they are: the security checkpoint, the fuel truck, the jetbridge, the overhead luggage bins, the rolling stairs, the mechanics checking the airplane's engines. He has logged several hours of airtime traveling with our family, but is still fascinated with the airport every time he picks up this book. ... Read more

Book Description

In 1997, NASA's Pathfinder began a new era in Mars exploration when it touched down and, along with its tiny rover, Sojourner, explored the Martian surface for the first time in 20 years. In December 1999, a new NASA spacecraft will land on Mars, tobe followed by several more missions over the coming decade. InThe Mystery of Mars, former astronaut Sally Ride and science teacher Tam O'Shaughnessy draw on the latest Pathfinder data, as well as decades of study of Mars, to present a comprehensive overview of Earth's nearest neighbor. With its thin atmosphere, rocky canyons, extinct volcanoes, and icy polar regions, Mars has many things in common with Earth--and may have even had life. Comparing the two planets' evolution, geology, and geography, the authors explain what we know about Mars today and what we hope to learn about it in the future. With lavish color photographs, this engaging and accessible introduction to the Red Planet is the ideal guide to this new age of Mars research. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great space science read for kids!
In 1997 NASA's Pathfinder became the first spacecraft to tough down on Mars: Mystery of Mars draws on the results of that mission and upon other Mars studies to provide a fine overview of Mars science and exploration.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book on Mars!
This is a wonderful, timely book. It's beautifully written and is full of spectacular pictures and illustrations. It includes the latest information from Pathfinder, Sojourner, and Global Surveyor, and has particularly interesting comparisons of Earth and Mars. 5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Wonderful!
As a mom who home-schools her kids, this book has been invaluable for keeping the fun and interest in teaching Astronomy. Janice VanCleave's book have been a great assest to our library.

1-0 out of 5 stars Packed with errors.
This book looks like it tried too hard to be about astronomy. It takes reasonable experiments about basic scientific principles and tacks on explanations related to astronomy that ignore other factors (i.e. both reflectivity and distance from the sun are seperately listed as the reason a planet is hotter when Venus is neither the darkest nor the closest), are overly obscure, or just plain wrong (appearance of 'the man in the moon' caused by shadows).

I have worked in an astronomy museum for six years, and this book has me pausing to try and comprehend what the book is trying to do. I am not familiar with the other Janice VanCleave books, but I specifically recommend AGAINST this one. ... Read more

The final frontier is conquered in the DK Space Encyclopedia and Eyewitness Encyclopedia of Space CD-ROM, the most beautiful, best organized family information sources yet for our galaxy and beyond. In the section called "Observing the Universe," space buffs will discover detailed diagrams of various telescopes, along with explanations of how they're used to pick up light, radio waves, and other emissions from faraway objects. In "Exploring Space," you'll find out how rockets work to launch satellites, people, and gear into space. If you're curious about what it's like to live in space, check out the information on astronauts' daily routines--did you know one astronaut smuggled a ham sandwich into his capsule after hearing how bad NASA's food was?

"Planets and Moons" introduces all the worlds of our solar system, from Mercury out to Neptune and Pluto. Fantastic photos of the planets taken by fly-by probes and the Hubble space telescope show unbelievable details like mountains, craters, and giant canyons. Moving farther away from home, "The Stars" takes you on a tour of our own sun and our stellar neighbors. The life cycle of a star is shown, as well as such strange things as novas, binary stars, rotating variables, and black holes. "Galaxies and Beyond" introduces basic cosmology, the study of the universe, with sections on the Milky Way and other galaxies as well as the latest theories about the size and age of the universe. 5-0 out of 5 stars A valuable reference for anyone interested in space
This is a wonderful book, exploring nearly every aspect of space, from the Big Bang to black holes. The book is easy to understand and fun to read whether you're doing a project about space or if you just enjoy reading about it. It's chock-full of hundreds of beautiful photographs and realistic-looking pictures, too. The book is accurate, colorful, and up-to-date, and I enjoy looking through it and reading it in my spare time.

This book covers many, many topics in space. Some of them include the solar system, the planets, the sun, meteors, comets, asteroids, the Milky Way, how the universe started and what it will be like in the future, galaxies, stars, the Big Bang, other solar systems, black holes, and much more.

Plus, the book has an entire stargazing section, with directions to make your own simple telescope, star maps, observing the sky, binocular astronomy, and a lot more!

Overall, I highly recommend this book. Adults will enjoy reading it and they will learn a lot too, and young children will enjoy looking at the photographs and having adults explain to them the text. This is a valuable and complete reference, and nearly everyone will enjoy reading it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
This is not just an ordinary book about the solar system, it is rich with information about all aspects of space from observing the universe, exploring space, the solar system, stars, galaxies and practical stargazing. Like other DK encyclopedias this is a great piece of work. Though kids (ages 8-12) might find the text a bit difficult to understand, the pictures and the way the information is presented can still awaken their interest and capture their full attention.

5-0 out of 5 stars A classic book - Must have if you have inquisitive kids.
I cannot count the number of times I have spent an entire
evening with my 5 yr old being asked to explain this or that
catchy page with its wonderful graphics and amazing photos, only
to lose myself in its lucid explanations.

I wouldn't say the CD is spectacular, but my 5 yr old seems to
think it is better than any computer game he's played. He loves
the book and the CD so much that he just can't resist the
temptation to keep telling his cousins and friends about the
wonders of space, gravity, galaxies, supermassive black-holes
and quasars! It is a while now that I've read a story book to
him at night. This book is his staple.

...P>Bottom line -- I recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great space CD-ROM and Book

4-0 out of 5 stars Audubon First Field Guide to the Night Sky
Gary Mechler has written an easily readable description of the night skies and also gives a good account of the universe in general. Although a part of Audubon's First Field Guide series intended for readers 9-12, this well illustrated book could be a good starting point for a reader of any age. It starts with an overview of what astronomy is, and then progresses to lively descriptions of the universe and its contents starting with the big and far away, and coming progressively closer to our planet in our solar system. The second part of the book consists of star charts by the renowned stellar cartographer Wil Tirion. These beginner level charts of the most important constellations, feature enough binocular and telescope objects to keep a beginning telescope owner busy for many evenings. There are many color images of the constellations charted (some taken by the reviewer), so that you can compare the map with a photo of the real sky on a cloudy evening. The book ends with a useful reference section containing a glossary, tables of astronomical events such as eclipses, meteor showers, etc., a good further reading list, and usable index. The only criticism I can level at this handy and attractively priced book is that the signatures or parts of the sewn binding started to separate slightly almost immediately on opening the book a few times. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars A nice intro to astrophysics but way too scary for children
This children's picture book is well-written and sets forth nearly incomprehensible topics in language children can understand. I would strongly recommend this book for 10 year-olds and above. On the other hand, I have to post an equally-strong warning to mothers of small but precocious children. My four year-old selected this nonfiction picture book in the young children's reading room of our local library. Last night, he begged me to read it to him. He was moderately frightened by the concept of the virtually limitless gravitational pull of black holes. He was horrified by singularities (the book has an illustrated example of energy concentrating in such a way as to create an alien cat) and absolutely, heart-poundingly terrified by the idea of white holes spewing out matter into new universes. We put the book away without finishing it and thought about more pleasant things for awhile. Not surprisingly, my son had nightmares about black holes sucking him in and white holes spewing him out last night. Don't make the same mistake I did. Save this book for the older kids.

4-0 out of 5 stars As a 10-year-old who is studying black holes, this book...
As a 10-year-old who is studying black holes, this book is a good resources. It has lots of good info, although it is a bit confusing at some points. I have gotten TONS of black hole stuff, but I think this is the best book on black holes for my age level. Black holes are an interesting subject, and I love studying them. They are a huge mystery, one of many in the universe. I think the most interesting fact I have found about Black Holes is that they can warp you to another universe. One of the reasons that I like to study them is because me and my partner, Cody, can make many predictions, such as if they actually DO warp you. This book basiclly has most of the info you need on Black Holes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very informational - able to be understood by all ages.
This book is very well done. The information is invaluable to anyone who wishes to know anything about black holes. The descriptions are thourough and the illustrations compliment the information very well. I'd recomend this to anyone who has a beginning interest in black holes or someone who's already started. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful book, but full of errors
Oxford University Press has published a visually spectacular and comprehensive astronomy encyclopedia for the lay-person. They have made liberal use of recent Hubble Space Telescope images to produce a truly beautiful book. However, the number of errors ranging from mistaken numbers, to misattributed photographs, to confused sentences is surprising. Perhaps a second edition will clean up these problems.

4-0 out of 5 stars Anyone remember Colorforms (tm)
I avoided this book for some time. I wasn't interested in anything with "stickers" for my young son. (I could just see them being attached to the wood furniture.) At some point we ended up with the book. I was shocked that the "stickers" were actually "colorforms", something that I had been looking for. The "stickers" are made of a thin plastic with the pictures printed on them. The "pages" of the book are made of a stiff board material.

Ironically I was looking for colorforms for my son. When I inquired at the local toy stores they all told me that Colorforms were no longer in production.

4-0 out of 5 stars good intro. to the planets
This is a simple, not too many details book about the planets. It is a good place to get kids wondering what is up there with a catchy little song from the Steve era of the show.

4-0 out of 5 stars Blue and Steve's introduction to the solar system
One of the best episode's of the Blue's Clues television series is the one that introduces the solar system. "Well, the sun's a hot star .... Mercury's hot too. Venus is the brightest planet .... etc."

There is not much text here. Basically the song is repeated twice, with text bubbles advising you where to place the many colorful and durable stickers depicting the planets, a shooting star, a rocket and various other solar system-y things.

5-0 out of 5 stars Get it!
My three year old knows all the planets thanks to Blue and Steve. This is the second time I have purchased this same book. My son placed the reusable stickers in the black dishwasher. It looked just like outer space and he would sing the song over and over. It just so happened that Mommy actually needed to wash the dishes, and the heat from the dry cycle melted the stickers! So I had to get a new book for him. So please, don't place the stickers where they can melt, or your child my have a melt down of his own!

5-0 out of 5 stars Blue conquers the world!
My son is a HUGE fan of Blue's Clues and he's also fascinated by the solar system. We were both really excited when we found Blue Skidoos to the Planets because he loved the episode of the show. He couldn't wait to get home and put the stickers in the book. He is able to read the entire book by himself and he can sing the song, too. He's only six, but he can name all of the planets thanks to this book. Thank you Steve and Blue for being such wonderful friends to preschoolers! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars demonstrates a difficult concept well
We use this book and its predecessor, Me On The Map, to teach map concepts in First grade. Children this age generally have difficulty with the "nesting" idea of these things--that you can be in a county, state, country, continent, on a planet, and in a solar system, all at once. These books do a good job of making this more tangible and easier to grasp. It is especially effective when students do a re-write following the reading and personalize it to their own place on the map.

4-0 out of 5 stars The kids on a bus say talk talk talk
the book was ok, but the idea of the kids telling the driver where they lived was a little dumb... but it does portray the information well

4-0 out of 5 stars Review of Floating in Space
The book was about astronauts orbiting in out space. It gives details of what they do when they have to eat, go to the bathroom, etc. It also explains about gravity and how the astronauts deal with gravity issues while they are in space. The book talks about how the space shuttle takes off and lands and how jobs would be done while on board.
I liked this book because it teaches children about things that happen in outer space in ways that they can easily understand. It had great Pictures that illustrated the materials that astronauts would use while they were in space and it also showed certain techniques that they would use to do tasks while on the space shuttle.
I think with this book the author was really trying to illustrate the ways things happen while astronauts are in orbit. He was trying to write and illustrate all the things that happen so that kids can understand it. The author tries to create a book were the children really feel like they are going into space and what that would be like. ... Read more
