Book Description

In the jungle of Puerto Rico, next to a giant aluminum telescope bowl, we meet astronomers Peter Backus and Jill Tarter of the SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) program. This research program is determined to find evidence of extraterrestrial life by searching for its radio signals. They hope to catch radio waves created by some kind of life far out in space. These scientists love their work: "Arriving in the control room, Jill puts on a tape of her favorite samba music by a group called Viva Brazil. Others in the room stay seated and propel themselves on their wheeled office chairs from workstation to workstation, but Jill usually gets up and sambas across the floor."In this rare combination of engaging narrative and factual information, Gloria Skurzynski uses techniques she's developed as a fiction writer to energize her science writing. This book not only brings the reader into the world of extra-terrestrial science, but is also very much about the hopes and dreams of real people. She lends a strong personal voice to the narrative, drawing the reader deep into the world of extraterrestrial study.Humans have always been fascinated with extraterrestrial life, and the book traces that interest, including the origination of the term "flying saucer." Sloan also explains why scientists don't buy it. "There's been no hard evidence, not a single artifact left behind-a lost boot, or a shred of whatever material the UFO was made of, or even a flake of alien skin."But not believing in flying saucers doesn't mean scientists don't believe in extraterrestrial life. They look for it using telescopes, space missions, and planet explorations. They study extremophiles, organisms that live in extreme environments on Earth, in the hopes that they will lead us to a better understanding of how life may exist in space. Really, what could be out there? This book visits scientists across the globe who are trying to find out, from Puerto Rico to California, from Socorro, New Mexico to Chile, Finland, Spain, and Hawaii. And, what's on tap for the future of extraterrestrial study? Researchers study hydrothermal vents deep under the sea, create super-sensitive radio telescopes, and scour the highest lake in the world. Extremely well written, filled with little-known facts, and often quite humorous, this book brings to life a subject that children are intrigued by. Our time is truly a fascinating moment in scientific exploration, and this book will help anyone get a jump on the search for E.T. Who knows? Maybe there's an alien as close as next-door¨a next-door planet, that is! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The BEST intergalactic toad book I have ever read.
This book really fills a big black hole in modern literature. The subject of toads in space has been constantly avoided, mishandled, and disregarded since the publication of Ivan Rabinavski's "Why Toads could never make it on the moon." Jane Yolen places the space-toad in its proper perspective in a beautiful and meaningful manner, pulling no punches and using no foul language. I loved it ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars 1 year old loves this book!
This is so great! It doesn't take up much space, so you can pack it on vacation, yet it unfolds to become a nice size book/toy. My son loves it, my only complaint is that the book is now held together by tape, as he has torn apart nearly every page. It would be great if the pages were held together with a tougher material, I'm sure he isn't the only kid who is tough on his books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book & Unique Concept
My toddler (20 months) loves this book! We purchased it several months ago and while she enjoyed it then, it has really become a favorite more recently.

The book itself is well-done, like many of the Baby Einstein products. One side features animated sealife while the other include photographs of the real animals. We go through and label the animals, the colors, etc as my daughter points out what she sees in the book.

The highlight, though, is that the book can be unfolded to make a circle of sealife! We set it up and our daughter sits in the middle and points out all her animal friends. Or, and we find this quite often, we set up the book and she brings her toys into it with her and plays inside the circle.

I have had no problem with the book not holding up well, but my daughter has not tried to pull-up on it. It is still in great condition and I found the cardboard pages to be quite sturdy.

All in all, I would highly recommend this book as an addition to your child's library. It has been much fun for my daughter and I don't see her interest in it fading anytime soon.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
My 14-month old loves this book. She always brings it to me and wants it all unfolded and set up around her in a circle so that she sits inside it. Lately she has been having fun pointing at the different drawings of the different ocean creatures. She is not as into the actual photographs on the opposite side. My only complaint is that the book is not very sturdy. We have already thrown away half of it because as she plays with it and tries to use it to pull herself up, she rips the "pages" off (each "page" is about 10x14 inches) or splits it down the seams leaving only 2 or 3-page pieces. I am considering buying a new one although that one will fall apart just as quickly so not sure if I should waste the money. She does love it though and it is a very unique idea in a book form. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Sun's a Hot Star
Lovely book given to my 4 yr old as a birthday gift.Text reads: "When night comes, I can see billions of stars twinkling in the dark sky.The sun that shines in the daytime and keeps us warm is really astar.A star is made of fiery gas.It gives off brilliant light.Somestars are so far away that their fire has burned out by the time thebrightness reaches us.Long ago, people imagined pictures in groups ofstars and gave them names. These are called constellations. Constellations can tell us many things. When we see Orion the Hunter inthe sky, we know it is the season to harvest what we planted. All yearlong, the Big Dipper points toward a star named Polaris.Polaris is alsocalled the North Star.We always see Polaris in the northern sky.If youknow which way north is, you can always find your way in the darkness. Sometimes before the stars come out, we can see a bright light dangling lowon the horizon. It looks like a star, but it isn't.It is the planetVenus.Stars twinkle, but planets glow with steady light. When somethingin space goes around something else, it is in orbit.Planets orbit aroundstars.Planets get their light from the star that shines on them.Earthwhere we live is a planet.Earth orbits around the sun.The sun and itsplanets make up our solar system.Moons orbit around planets.Someplanets have many moons.Earth has just one.Our moon seems to change itsshape each night, but it doesn't.It is always round. We just can't seeall of it."... there are about 8 more pages to go, but I hope you getthe idea and can judge the book for yourself. ... Book Description

Leave time for wonder.

Walt Whitman's "When I Heard the Learn'd Astronomer" is an enduring celebration of the imagination. Here, Whitman's wise words are beautifully recast by New York Times #1 best-selling illustrator Loren Long to tell the story of a boy's fascination with the heavens. Toy rocket in hand, the boy finds himself in a crowded, stuffy lecture hall. At first he is amazed by the charts and the figures. But when he finds himself overwhelmed by the pontifications of an academic, he retreats to the great outdoors and does something as universal as the stars themselves...

he dreams. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting Concept
I like this book because of the fact that it's format is not traditional. I love seeing interesting subjects, such as the planets, presented in an interesting way so as to capture both the child's and adult's imagination. This book does it all. The illustrator, Arthur L'Hommedieu, shows us the planets - and asteriods! - from the sun's view, in perspective, as a tunnel. You open up the book to a vivid view of the solar system, then page by page read pertinent information on each planet, as well as getting a single view of it. Stretch the book out a little, as it is accordion-style, for a stunning 3-D view! I recommend this over any other children's book on the planets. It's not a dry rehashing of scientific information - it's FUN!

5-0 out of 5 stars Breathtaking! *Ü*
"Children of the Sun" is one of a kind. It's fascinating - for the children as well as the adults, for the facts stated in it are not common knowledge that is easily obtained, but a product of extensive research, outlined in a comprehensive and assesible manner. The artwork is simply splendid! It is colorful, which would most certainly appeal to the children, but it is also educational and realistic and may be helpful to teenagers and even adults. The paper engineering composing the book is simply unique. It allows it to be Child's play, as well as the educational instrument. Applause to Mr. Arthur J. L'Hommendieu! ... Read more
