5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Resource
This book places an outline of world history in an attractive format. There are color maps and illustrations to accompany the highlights of different time periods. There are sections about languages, rulers, politics, agriculture, inventions, and more. A time chart with specific dates runs along the right hand page. Following the section about the twentieth century is a world time chart. On this chart, the dates run down the left and the names of the continents are across the top. This allows you, at a glance, to compare what was happening around the world. This atlas contains a glossary, index of maps, and general index as further study aids. An outstanding addition to home or class libraries. ... Read more

Spacious skies, purple mountains, amber waves of grain... America has a lot to offer, and the National Geographic United States Atlas for Young Explorers shows it all. With easy-to-read maps, lush full-color photos and illustrations, and fascinating details about each region of the country, it's obvious that this is a National Geographic endeavor. Political and physical maps show the entire U.S., while thematic maps cover such topics as population and territorial growth. In addition, each state has its own precisely illustrated two-page map, along with information on the capital; population; agriculture and industry; state flag, bird, and flower; and much more. Symbols indicate where national trails, economic activities, natural landmarks, and other points of interest are to be found. Big, enthralling photos of New England mountains, Texas tornadoes, and mazelike Los Angeles freeways bring the landscape to life, for better or worse.

While young explorers spend hours lost in the wonders of the nation, parents and teachers can rest easy, knowing they can rely on the National Geographic Society's well-known standards of accuracy and excellence. A great companion to the National Geographic World Atlas for Young Explorers, this impressive volume is a stellar resource for every schoolchild, from sea to shining sea. 5-0 out of 5 stars Great resource for the entire family!
I was looking for an atlas for my 10-year old and 8 year-old and have been very impressed with this book. This book includes a section with general information on the U.S. including:types of vegetation, the natural environment, federal lands, endangered species, time zones, territorial growth, population, and transportation. The remainder of the book is divided up by region. Each region section begins with a "physical" map showing the major landforms and state boundaries. Two pages of beautiful photographs that you associate with National Geographic publications follow. The state maps are large and include icons of important economic activities. The state motto, population, bird, and plant are also included.

This has been an invaluable resource for our family. Our kids were most impressed by the pages showing where natural disasters such as volcanoes, tornadoes, floods, and earthquakes can occur. My 10-year old's teacher was so impressed with this book, she plans to order it for classroom use. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My 7 year old learned all his states!!!
I purchased this cd through a book club and put it in our car to listen to on the way to school. In a very short time, my 7 year old learned all his states & is well on his way to learning his capitals. My 4 year old has amazed us all by picking up most of the states as well. The lyrics are set to tunes most kids would already know (such as "Yankee Doodle") so they don't have to spend time learning the music and can jump right into the lyrics (ie state names.) It's a terrific educational tool!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Fun in Learning States and Capitals
This book is an excellent way for children to learn their stttes and capitals. It's fun way with music and rhythem is excellent. As a teacher, I use it in my classroom with third, fourth, and fifth graders and they enjoy it and can tell you any state or capital. Geography is important in education and this is a great book to start your children off with for learning. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I like this book
I like the maps because they are simple and colorful. The words are easy and I like to look at it by myself. My favorite map is of Asia because my grandparents live there and I like to look at it on the map.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simple enough for me!
This atlas allows me to develop some geography and map concepts that are often difficult for children. The few words and easy to "read" illustrations are going to be a great boon to students who are having difficulty with understanding concepts such as continents, etc.

3-0 out of 5 stars A bit too simple
In general, a good effort at introducing various areas and cultures, but a bit too simplistic. My 3-year-old son loves maps, but was somewhat confused by these. He pretty soon noticed that Japan's four main islands had been "simplified" to two. I noticed that the Philippines, a nation of hundreds of islands, had been reduced to two islands far apart. Sicily had been absorbed into the rest of Italy and Cyprus, by no means a small island nation, had disappeared. Is this what National Geographic's "expert cartographers" can produce? How can a family with ancestors from Sicily explain to their children where they came from? One can argue on whether small minds need the extra detail, but a Japanese book my son also owns directed at the same age is much more detailed and my son seems capable of noticing that detail. I really do have to question the decision by the authors to turn these maps into "three-dimensional puzzle pieces": that's OK for puzzles, but not atlases. Treat young minds too simply and they will remain simple forver. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Introduction to Dinosaurs
This atlas serves as a lovely introduction to the world of dinosaurs. At just 64 pages, it is very readable with text that is easily understood & yet not patronizing to the beginner. The book tries to becomprehensive in its coverage by first telling us about the formation ofthe continents & how this explains where dinosaur fossils are found. The dinosaurs found on each of the continents are then covered, and this isinterspersed with specific information on the various types of dinosaurs egthe carnosaurs, sauropods, horned dinosaurs etc. All the way, the book isbeautifully illustrated with detailed& colorful renditions of thedinosaurs & their skeletons by Giuliano Fornari, who has a list ofother dinosaur books to his credit. One gripe is that the book doesn'tappear to be up to date. It was originally published in 1991 and althoughthis is listed as the 'First American Revised Edition 1999', recentdicoveries are not mentioned - eg the book lists Ultrasauros as the longestdinosaur, but in 1993, the 130 foot long Argentinosaurus huinculensis wasnamed. Another dinosaur recently described, Sauroposeidon, found inOklahoma might be even bigger. In addition, Tyrannosaurus rex is mentionedas the largest carnosaur, but I believe that the Giganotosaurus caroliniinamed in 1995 might be bigger. Still, these are small gripes that do notdetract from the fact that this is a great book for budding dinosaur loversof all ages ( even my 16 month old son pulls the book down to leaf thro itspages daily). ... Although the Horn book called the pages overcrowded, I think the book is ideal for young or reluctant readers because there are so many pictures calculated to capture student interest. Short descriptions of religions in Egypt, Rome, and Mesopotamia lend to making comparisons and gaining a quick overview of the topic. The index lists 27 pages for Egypt, but some pages only mention Egypt in passing with no information about Egypt (example: p. 20 "In the Exodus story Moses and Aaron ask the pharaoh to let his Jewish slaves go free. When he refuses, God brings ten plagues down on Egypt, including frogs, boils, hail and locusts"). Includes maps and illustrations. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars A great book to teach anatomy and physiology EXCEPT...
I got this book from the library to preview it before purchasing it. I loved the pictures in the book and how it was divided up. I have a problem with one picture though, which I believe will prevent me from purchasing this title. I have NO problem with the pictures of the reproductive tracts, this is basic biology. I DO have a problem with the detailed schematic of sexual intercourse in progress and a full descriptive caption about what happens during intercourse. I find this inappropriate for a book aimed at children as young as 9. I'd rather my children learn about this wonderful God-given act of love and commitment from me rather than from a picture book. I'd appreciate an email from the author as to why he would include this in a book made for young children.

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting Points in History
AWESOME, COOL, EXCITING

This book was a great experience for me. It taught me how life changes . It had information about wars, if you like wars. It's amazing how life changes like when a water-powered turbine powered a belt which produced electricity used to make quilts and cloth.

There is a little square on the page that tells you the year and place in the U.S. that the event took place. It has numbers to tell you what is what in the illustrations.

I loved the part about Ellis Island! Back then there were big mansions. Now a days there are not as many mansions. Read this book to learn about events in history you have never thought about before.

5-0 out of 5 stars fun, gorgeous, fascinating
What a wonderful book! You can help your middle schooler envision locales of historic interest with these twenty two-page spreads. Pictures use up most of the space and depict people, including children, in typical doings; some cross-sections are employed. The text of several paragraphs describes the place physically, culturally and historically, and sometimes stories are personalized through the experience of a child. Numbered entries point out events or items of interest. Very nicely done and a terrific aid for visual learners.

Presented in chronological order, the sites are: Cahokia, 1200 AD; a Pacific Northwest whaling village, 1490; a pueblo and mission, 1627; New Plymouth, 1627; Charlestown, 1739; a black settlement/fort, 1759; Boonesborough, Kentucky, 1776; battle of Saratoga, 1777; Philadelphia, 1787; a Taos hacienda, 1823; Fort Laramie, 1849; a New England mill town, 1850; a plantation, 1855; Gettysburg, 1863; Abilene, 1871; a wheat farm, 1888; a Chicago mansion, 1893; Ellis Island, 1901; a New York tenement, 1916; a post-WWII housing project, 1953. An index is included.

Very nicely done. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars A unique atlas about key places in American History
"Places in Time: A New Atlas of American History" takes young readers to twenty sites that have shaped America's history, such as New Plymouth when the Pilgrims first settled in the New World, Fort Laramie when the wagon trains rolled through, and Ellis Island when the immigrants arrived. Elspeth Leacock and Susan Buckley have combined an atlas and a storybook, with illustrations by Randy Jones, that shows the layouts of these places, often with cut-aways of the interiors of key buildings, such as a New York City tenement.

I think "Journeys in Time," the companion New Atlas of American History co-authored by Leacock and Buckley, is the slightly superior work, but that is mainly because some of these places have a rather limited scope. For example, geography came into play during the Battle of Gettysburg as much as in any battle in American History, but that is not exactly covered here. I also think that when the book looks at just one building, e.g. "Chicago: Christmas at the Mansion (1893)", it is not playing to its strength. When we see the layout of an entire whaling village or the frontier fort at Boonesborough, that is when this book is at its best.

These are a nice set of books, which will give young students a new perspective on American history. The approach is also something that can be emulated in the classroom, taking these same principals and applying them to other aspects of history the kids are studying. Be sure to check out both volumes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Personalized History
It does not simply show war battle sites. Historic places like a New England factory town, 1770's Philadelphia, and a slave plantation are also shown. Do not think of this as a map book. Cutaway drawings/paintings with labels show the reader a typical plantation, factory town, a 1950's planned suburb and battle scenes.
