wonderful historical teaching aid for middle schoolers
What a wonderful book!You can help your middle schooler envision treks of historic interest with these twenty two-page spreads.Pictures use up most of the space and depict people, including children, on the move; some cross-sections are employed.Text describes the journey, and sometimes stories are personalized through the experience of a child.Numbered entries within the text point out events or places, and a sidebar lists interesting facts.Very nicely done and a terrific aid for visual learners.

Using maps of journeys to tell the history of America
"Journeys in Time: A New Atlas of American History" is quite an interesting book.It maps twenty journeys that have shaped the history of the United States, from "How the Anishinabe Found a New Home (Long Ago)" to "Leaving Vietnam (1976)."The idea here is that maps are more than just geography and understanding the shape of the land, because you can trace a route and see a story in the spaces where it unfolded.Elspeth Leacock and Susan Buckley aptly characterize America's history as the story of a people on the move.Consequently, "Journeys in Time," with its illustrations by Rodica Prato, is a combination atlas and storybook.

Of course, all of the stories in this book are true.While you will find some of the more famous journeys in American history, such as the voyages of Christopher Columbus and the "Mayflower," and the Lewis & Clark expedition, the chief charm of this volume are the lesser known trips, such as "Big Joe Bailey Takes the Underground Railroad," "John Muir Walks America," and "Louis Armstrong Heads North."As you can see, there is an attempt to personalize these trips.So the story of the California Gold Rush is told from the perspective of Dame Shirley, the Civil War through the travels of Union quartermaster Orlando French, cowboy Baylis John Fletcher on a cattle drive, and nervous immigrant Rosa Cristoforo.

This is a pretty unique volume that can be both informative and inspirational.The latter would be true because you can easily see young students creating their own maps to tell their own stories about people coming to or traveling across America.Leacock and Buckley have also co-authored a companion volume, "Places in Time," illustrated by Randy Jones that performs a similar function by looking at particular places.While it is also an interesting combination atlas and storybook, "Journeys in Time" is the better of the pair. ... Great Historical Reference
The "Atlas of Past Times" found a permanent place on my coffee table. This book is absolutely loaded with illustrative maps, photos, and text. John Haywood has done to the pictorial record of world history what Kenneth C. Davis did for American history in his "Don't Know Much About History."

Time after time over the years I've heard or read about a particular civilization, war, political upheaval, or religious movement, but was unclear as to the specific timeframe and geographic scope. It's one thing to read about boundaries in text, but Haywood lays it all out in numerous maps. Each map is color-coded and loaded with useful information. The legends are clear and concise. A perfect example of how I found the book useful was in my following the war in Iraq. I didn't want to read six textbooks to gain a better understanding of the region's history. Haywood's book provides a fantastic visual overview: Mesopotamia, the Assyrians, the Babylonians, the Jews, the Arabs, the advance and subdivisions of Islam, the Kurds, the Turks, etc. The area has a long and convoluted history, which the maps really help place within grasp of the common man.

The accompanying text is only a cursory--but well written--examination of chronological world history, which is fine; it is titled and pitched as an "Atlas," and therein lies its strength and attraction. Great book for young geography enthusiasts
This is a very good book for younger children who are interested in geography. The cartoonish drawings and the story are simple and interesting for younger kids while the maps have plenty of detail and color. My 6 year old son loves this book. We originally borrowed it from the library and found ourselves borrowing it again 2 or 3 times over the next year. Now he has his own copy! A good young reader book
This was a good book with lots of color photos,drawings and maps. I think my children were a bit young for it (5&3)but they enjoyed the sections on what animals and plants can be found in the different regions. ... Read more
