Book Description

We live on a turbulent planet, whose surfaces move, erupt, quake, and burn. Gravity pulls at the land, causing dangerous masses of mud or rock to slide—destroying homes and taking lives. Huge slabs of snow careen down mountains, burying everything in their path. And, the atmosphere churns restlessly, causing wild winds to blow and heavy rains to fall. Go as close as you’d ever want to Earth’s greatest disasters, vividly pictured. Look into the eye of the hurricane from high above, and at those funnels of fury known a tornadoes. Safely see lighting flash across dark skies—its electric streaks so beautiful and so lethal. From forest infernos to drought-ravaged lands, from fallen space debris to troubled waters rising into tsunamis, you’ll find how these tragedies happen, how we can prevent them, and how we pick up the pieces after they occur.

1-0 out of 5 stars Bait and Switch - An intellectual virus
What seems like an objective scientific book aimed to inform children of the forces of nature and their effects on the human environment was hijacked on the last 19 pages as a diatribe against industrialization. The title of the book is "The Atlas of Natural Disasters" turned out to be neither an atlas nor solely focused on Natural Disasters. While the lack of comprehensive mapping of these hazards may be forgivable, the deviation from the subject matter seemed intended to slip an extreme environmental message past parents and directly to the young audience. The cover lists avalanches, earthquakes, floods & storms, hurricanes (which seem to fit in the previous category by my reckoning) , wildfires and volcanic eruptions. What was omitted was the section on "Unnatural Disasters" which described environmental degradation and other "human induced", "planet killing" activities. These activities were defended poorly with sketchy, non referenced, science and in some cases absolute deceit.

My favorite was the image of Santiago, Chile which "showed" the effects of poor air quality with no explanation of what the image was, in fact, showing. I guess we are expected to believe this since it is satellite imagery that this must be proof. While I have spent time in Santiago and am aware that the air quality can be quite poor, I am also experienced at interpreting imagery and know that the image presented is at best inconclusive.

Shame on this author, editors and publishers for putting indoctrination and profits ahead of principled science. This seems like a perfectly designed vehicle for directing an extreme environmental message past parents and into the minds of young impressionable readers. However, judging from its location on the discount rack, it seems they were not able to fool sufficient numbers to make the ruse work. I would recommend that, unless you share the pessimistic views of the author, you either avoid this book entirely or remove the last 19 pages which will instantly upgrade it from a farce to a tolerable gloss over of natural hazards. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Cultural Atlas of Africa
This book is well written and explaining about whole African continent from emergence of man in Africa, its language family, religion to art with lots of pictures. It gives you a good idea what is like as a whole. Information on each country, however, written in the latter half, is a little too brief. It only explains history and general information such as population and capital, etc. If it could provide us more information on cultural differences in each country in order to let us know how they live, for example, their diet, housing conditions, education systems, fashions, festivals, it would be much more informational and vivid. This is a good atlas to provide an overall picture of the continent Africa. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Best for All Ages
Another excellent product by Klutz.Facts and items of interest on every page about every state. There are 100 slots that actually hold the quarters, a slot for both the Denver and Penn. mints, while most maps and books only hold 50.You can rid one of the pages if you are not interested in both mints and the book still looks finished and good. The construction is on the laminate pages, well designed and pleasing to the eye.Definately the best and most interesting when it comes to a coin collection book. So check your change for some fun. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars More advanced than expected
I bought this book for my 3 year old because he loves maps and it was recommended by a national parents magazine. I thought it was going to be pages of maps, like a normal atlas...it is really more a book with a few small maps integrated into the text. Much more advanced than what I expected. It divides the world into the continents and then discusses special things about the people and places on the continent. Very informational, but not incredibly map oriented. I would recommend this book for kids 5 and older, which is who it is probably for, I was just thinking that my 3 year old would get to see a lot of maps since it was an "atlas". I was wrong :-) ...
