5-0 out of 5 stars This story is actually about just plain bravery
This book teaches more than just being scared to lose a tooth. I think the main theme of this story is bravery. Arthur brags that he is "Captain Fearless," but both sibings(even Arthur) have a fear of something-Arthur is scared to lose his first tooth-and Violet is scared of the dark. But when the treat for dessert is taffy apples, Arthur doesn't want them because of his loose tooth(and his fear to pull it out), so Violet decides to make s'mores but has to go out in the dark to get sticks to make them-and faces her fear, so Arthur decides to face his fear-and chooses to be the,"Captain Fearless" he calls himself so pulls out his tooth and then he IS able to eat the taffy apples as well as the s'mores. In other words, this is a great story to teach about any kind of bravery!

5-0 out of 5 stars The other Arthur experienced the other tooth-losing feeling
The lesser known Arthur character, created by Lillian Hoban. Many people may know Marc Brown's story, "Arthur's Tooth" about Arthur the aardvark, but they may not necessarily realize that each Arthur has a different message. One is about being desperate to lose a tooth, the other about being scared to lose a tooth. I actually prefer Lillian Hoban's Arthur the monkey over Marc Brown's Arthur the aardvark, so I purchased this book as well as other Arthur the monkey titles. This one reminded me of when I was scared to lose my first tooth. Plus this one teaches how to make taffy apples and s'mores, and tells how the s'more got its name on page 62. If you wish, buy the Marc Brown book listed above, then buy this book and compare the two feelings of each Arthur character. However, if you are particularly interested in this title, beware of trying to obtain a book club edition through a school book club which has this title listed, as you may accidentally get sent the Marc Brown title. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars tasty, with the power to cure
Like the cover illustration, this story is round and warm, like a bowl of soup. It was a very nice Sunday, in the middle of spring, in the middle of breakfast, when Rudie Dinkins heard his mama say that Rudie's after-school and sick-day sitter, Mrs. Gittel, had the flu. But Mrs. Gittel is more than the sitter, isn't she? She is Rudie's older friend. Rudie goes down the hall to Mrs. Gittel's apartment and hears 13 "a-choos" before he even knocks on her door. When he's sick, Mrs. Gittel makes him chicken soup. So, with his mother's help, Rudie, a nice boychik, cooks a batch of chicken soup using Mrs. Gittel's secret ingredient: sweet memories of their friendship! The soup requires at least three sweet stories about the person who will be consuming the soup. And soon Mrs. Gittel, the Chicken Soup Queen, is feeling good as new! (if Arthur hadn't moved so far away, maybe her son, Arthur, could have made the soup? No?) Well, Mrs Gittel is cured so well, that she feels well enough to help Rudie who has a Tummy ache later in the day. Mommy seems to be crying in one illustration: Is it cuz Rudie is so sweet that you can bottle him as medicine, or is it because she is peeling an onion for the soup? Please be sure to read the recipe aloud at the end of the book. A recipient of a Sidney Taylor Award! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Spiffy Story
I liked this book because it is a good story of a girl who visits her neighbor who is old and lonely. This lady (Miss Maggie) tells a story to the little girl who visits her (Ellie) about a doll that she had when she was a girl. For her Eighth Birthday she got a doll with big blue eyes. She laid her doll on the hallway table. Then when they heard a crash. It was the doll. Her Birthday was coming up and they bought a present for her. What happened to the doll? To find out what happens next read this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars I cry every time I read this darn book...
Call me sentimental, but there's something to this story that tugs at your heart strings every time you read it. And I've read this at least a dozen times.

The story tells of the relationship between Ellie and her sitter Miss Maggie and of the very special birthday gift that Ellie gets for Maggie out of "pure love."

The illustrations are quite beautiful and complement the story very well. A tender story creates a tender heart. This is the best book in the Chicken Soup for Little Souls' series. ... Read more

Book Description

I'm Darcy Stevens. A baby-sitter for the Foster children. Now, I've taken care of bratty kids before, but never three all at once. These kids are really something. I was reading to the two girls and Jeremy snuck into the den to call his Uncle Rick who lives in Hawaii! Later the baby covered herself with her mother's expensive makeup!

But that's not the half of it. After I interviewed for the job, my brother drove me home and I saw a black car following us. Then on my first day, this stranger came to the door and said he was from the gas company and had to get in for an emergency. I asked to see his ID and instead of showing me, he just left.

I could never have predicted what would happen next.... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars It's a great book and very exciting!
I liked this book because everytime you turn around something exciting happens! The characters are fit for the book.I liked the main character, Darcy, because in the end she is very brave. This book has exciting, mischievious characters. The baby-sitter,Darcy Stevens, gets interviewed at this "high-quality" house. She gets the job and finds out that the children are pests! The second day as she was finishing making lunch ,when all of the sudden the burgular alarm went off!The police come and search, but there's no one around. The police leave and a few minutes later... If you want to know what happens you'll have to read on!So hurry up! It's to exciting to wait!

4-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for a baby-sitter
From the moment that Darcy set her eyes on the three foster kids, she knew that baby-sitting would not be a "fun" job. Even though the pay was twice her rate, was only for a few hours a day, and Darcy was an experienced baby-sitter, she didn't count on the mysterious things that started happening at the children's house after she took the job. She did everything a good baby-sitter was supposed to do. She didn't let the stranger saying he was from the gas company into the house, and she called the police when the house alarm went off in the middle of the afternoon. All of a sudden, a strange thing happens, and now it is up to Darcy to rescue the foster kids and herself from three dangerous kidnappers.

This book is full of suspense. That's why it's interesting to read. Once you start reading you can't stop. You just keep on turning the pages. Will Darcy be able to save herself and the kids? If you want to find out, read the book and get caught up in the great adventure with Darcy and the three kids.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read
For my English class we had to read a book for a book report, and I chose the book Baby-Sitting Is a Dangerous Job. My favorite part was when Darcy found out that she was going to baby-sit the Foster Family's children, and they had vicious dogs. I also liked when Darcy saw mysterious things happening around their house . I would recommend this book to anyone who likes mystery books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible!!!!!!!!!
This is one of my favorite books. I don't usually enjoy this type of book but there is something about the style of writing that that just made me love it!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Book
This a very exciting book about a girl named Darcy Stevens. She gets hired to babysit some rich children "the Fosters",who she thinks will be a handful. But when some men in a black car keep following her everything changes.Like gas man coming to the Foster's house but Darcy can't see his ID.I think this book is a great mystery that keeps the suspense going.I think it was writen very well and I would suggest it to all book lovers. ... Book Description

Although Angel loves her little brother, Rags, dearly, the constant responsibility of caring for him weighs heavily on her young shoulders. These tales of the trials and tribulations of ten-year-old Angel O'Leary are guaranteed to win many fans. A master at creating short, amusing episodes, Judy Delton writes about ordinary children in a manner often compared to Beverly Cleary, and Carolyn Haywood. Booklist described Angel as, "a flesh-and-blood child whom readers will take to their hearts. Each little jewel of a chapter is an episode unto itself, and Delton's handling of this format is reminiscent of Eleanor Estes' fine work." ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Meagan's Review
Yes I did like this book because it's by one of my favorite authors and I have almost read every single book in the series.
The book was about this girl called Jessi who has just moved into a new neighborhood.Jessi Jessi has this really great group of friends called the Baby Sitters Club.Jessi gets a sitting job for this deaf boy called Matt.Matt uses sign language instead of lip reading.Jessi is going to be in a ballet show called Coppelia and Matt's mom has been making arrangements so that the 8 kids in Matt's class can go see Coppelia.Theyhave arranged for Haley to be the narrator and for Matt and Haley's mom to stand up on the stage and sign everything that Haley says so that Matt isn't left out. After the show Jessi finds out that Adle came to watch the show.Jessi's cousin Keshia is from Okley, New Jersey came to see Jessi be Swandelia. To celebrate the show being a success everybody who knows Jessi went to a restraunt to have ice cream.
Anybody will like this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Care for the deaf
A very touching and realistic story. It features a young boy named Matt who was born deaf and this family, the Braddocks, move into Stoneybrook. Putting Jessi as the main character in this Babysitter Club book is very interesting because the deaf cannot hear music and therefore, none of them had exactly went to watch a musical or a ballet concert. Jessi's a ballerina and she feels especially sympathetic towards the deaf in that very aspect.
This story touches on the sensitive areas of a deaf person's life, about being ridiculed by others, looked down and thought of as weird. However, the babysitters were intrigued by Sign Language and the other kids int he neighbourhood begin to slowly accept Matt and were fascinated with sign language.
We also find out more about the deaf in this book, we learn some sign language, we learn that it is crucial that the deaf are kept well away from busy roads as they cannot hear cars approaching. We also find out how some families are being inconsiderate in not bothering to take up sign language to communicate with their deaf family member and instead, expect him/her to lip-read instead. Lip reading is extremely difficult.
The story has a happy ending and reveals what Jessi does to make the children in the school for the deaf happy. A must-read.

4-0 out of 5 stars good
i'm taking ASL in school and i was looking on my books shelf and found this book and i decided to re-read it.its really good.the only thing that bugs me is that on the cover jessie is using see sign when the book said it was ASL.it doesn't matter to much though.it is a really good book and shows how people who may seem diffrent at first glance can have a lot ion common with you.i hope you enjoy it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Awesome...
This book was great! Jessi gets the baby sitting job of watching a little deaf boy, Matt. She learns sign language (his "secret language) and gets to know him better. She even explains to the neighborhood kids that he's not weird, he's cool, because he's got his own language. Pretty soon ,all the kids learn something in sign language, and he has plently offriends. I really enjoyed this book, and I'm sure anyone else would too. :] ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent first reader - very funny!
My kids laughed histarically when we got this book from the library for my six year old to practice reading. My four year old also wanted to read it himself. The text is simple enough for them to repeat after I read it to them. They love this silly book so much I'm going to buy one for them. It is definately a keeper!

5-0 out of 5 stars A terrific book for kids and adults
Being a parent, an elementary school teacher(and a former child) this book is a terrific exploration of childhood angst. It opens up a dialogue between kids and parents over the issue of separation. I found it funny, well paced and timeless. It's no surprise School Library Journal gave it a starred review.

5-0 out of 5 stars Became my daughter's favorite in a matter of days!
This book is perfect for anyone who has a strong-willed, feisty youngster in their house. I bought this book for my daughter thinking it would help her with the idea of babysitters. It has been a dream! My daughter can easily relate to the spunky little girl in the book and the sweet, reassuring parents. The illustrations are charming, the language is realistic and the little girl is a typical creative toddler who will do anything to keep mommy and daddy from leaving the house. Both my husband and I have read the book to my daughter frequently, and she has now taken to "reading" the book to us, her stuffed animals and our family dog! We are searching for a babysitter in the new town we must moved to, and our little one is hoping we will find her a "silly Sarah" to care for her when we must go out too. This is the best book I have bought her in the past 6 months at least.

1-0 out of 5 stars Careful of words you may not want your child to say.....
I thought this would be a fun book to use to teach my daughter that mom and dad always come back home, but instead, I found it rude and offensive. The child calls her babysitter "stupid" (a word we don't really want our child to say at all); and the girl is very snappy and snotty. I wouldn't recommend this for fun and educational reading - in fact, I wouldn't recommend it at all. Ironically, I found out about this book upon a recommendation from a parent's resource magazine. Disappointing. ... Read more

When Mama Elephant, Flora, phones six mice to ask if they can look after her "little" Ellie, the mice say yes:"After all, you have to help your friends." Fanciful, clean-cut illustrations humorously display the conundrum the tiny mice face as they care for Ellie.Propelling her stroller uphill to the park is no small task.Pushing her on the swing requires real team effort. The sitter's name isn't the same as in the T.V. show (kids are sticklers for detail) and Rosie isn't in the book at all. Other than that, I think it's a very cute book and it deals with Caillou's feelings in a very open way. My daughter (2 1/2) didn't notice either of these details, but an older child might. She loves the book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Mother Goose Time is a "must have" for teachers and parents
Mother Goose Time is a classic collection of rhymes, songs and poems for children. As a librarian who works with infants and toddlers I found this book to be an invaluable resource. Many of the nursery rhymes are familiar and bring back memories of childhood. The tips for interacting with little ones ring true and have very practical applications. Although aimed at the librarian, this book is essential for parents, teachers, caregivers and anyone who wants to get some toothless grins, touch the minds of little ones and start the spark that creates a lifelong love of reading. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Taking Care of Terrific was terrific!
The book I read was Taking Care of Terrific and the Author is Lois Lowry. This book is a wonderful book to read. It all starts out with a 14 year old girl named Enid. Enid is a wonderful girl who has a mother, father and a housekeeper, Mrs. Kolodny. Mrs. Kolodny gave Enid a message about babysitting for the Cameron's family. Enid went to the Cameron Family and the boy she had to look after was Joshua but his nickname is Tom Terrific. So Enid and Tom Terrific go to the Public Garden together and when they get their they meet a guy named Hawk. Hawk plays the saxophone. Also in the Public Garden are bag ladies. These bag ladies are homeless people who have no where to go. Enid asked Hawk why the bag ladies were so sad. They then started a discussion about why the bag ladies are upset and Hawk said probably because they had no root beer popsicles. So right then Enid had an idea to go on strike for rootbeer popsicles and that is what at Enid and Tom sit in the Public garden and draw pictures together of trees. Also Enid broke most of the rules that Joshua's mom made for him to follow. Enid also taught Joshua how to make prank phone calls. The next time Enid babysat she took Tom Terrific to the Public Park, Hawk was there too. They wondered if the bag ladies would like to ride on the swan boats that floated in the lake in the middle of the Public Garden. Hawk asked all the bag ladies if they would like to have a ride on the swan boats and they all said yes. My friend Seth Sandroff helped us with it. We drew out our plan and got all the bag ladies loaded up into swan boats and gave them a ride. They showed the homeless all a great time. I liked this book because it was entertaining. I liked the fact that Enid was interested in making people happy and having them experience new things. I liked that she took a chance of getting into trouble to make a little boys life brighter and more exciting. I would recommend this book to anyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of my favorites
At age 24, I often find myself thinking back about the books I read and loved as a child. I could never remember the title of one of my favorites, a story of a babysitter who took her charge to the Boston Common and eventually hijacked the swan boats in the park lagoon. After at least two years of asking my peers if they remembered that book (most of them did not) I decided to hunt it down with the only keyword I remembered from the title -- Terrific -- and to my delight I found it! That the book has kept with me this long proves what a great read it really is. A must for city children, but also for midwestern kids like myself looking for a window to an entirely different world.

4-0 out of 5 stars Enchantment with a Twist
This book is the story of a girl named Enid, who is just like a regualr kid the way kids actually are, and not the way that they are usually portrayed by adults. She and her babysitting charge (he wants ot be called Terrific) go everyday to the park and meet and befriend a variety of real life people. The characters, setting, and situation are just like real life, but not so ordinary that it gets boring. Many ages would like this book, but I think the reader will appreciate it more if they are older (around 9 or 10) and have a larger view and better understanding of the way life is for different kinds of people. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars The Grandma Mix-Up!
Pip's parents are going on vacation. Dad called and asked Grandma Sal to baby-sit without knowing that Mom had already called Grandma Nan. On the day Pip's parents were leaving, both Grandmas showed up!
Grandma Nan is too strict. Grandma Sal is too laid back. Both of them are driving Pip insane. He doesn't know what to do!
I think that this book is really cute. It seems to remind me of my grandparents. It would drive me crazy, like Pip, if both of them got together. This story is silly and somewhat entertaining. I believe that it is best for a young reader who will easily comprehend. It's a good story. ... Read more
