Maisy the mouse and her friends Cyril, Charley, and Tallulah have a busyday of gardening, painting pictures, cleaning the playroom, and romping at theplayground. Young readers can lift the flaps--all 36 of 'em--to learn aboutnumbers, colors, shapes, and opposites as the pals go about their day. Whatobjects in the playroom match the shapes on the flaps? What color completes thepictures of carrots, whales, and grasshoppers? The oh-so-cute Maisy is a hugefavorite with children, who watch her on TV and read about her in Where Does Maisy Live?, Maisy Goes to Bed, Count with Maisy, and many moretitles by award-winning artist Lucy Cousins. Vibrant colors and bold blackoutlines set the tone for this cheery, interactive book about everyone'sfavorite mouse. (Baby to preschool) --Emilie Coulter ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars 16 month old Ayla and Maisy books
My grand child, Ayla, also enjoys this lift the flaps book. She is still discovering flaps she hasn't noticed as yet. I will difinitely order more of the Maisy books as they are a hit with her.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome book
I got this book for my 16 month old 1 week ago and she has hardly put it down since. It has bright captivating illustrations, robust flaps that are hard to tear, and a different theme on each page. The themes are ones from real life (counting bugs in the garden, colouring different objects, putting different shaped toys away in the playroom, and doing opposites in the playground) and the way the flaps teach the concepts is ingenious. My baby is particularly crazy about the opposites page since when you flip the flaps Maisy goes up and down the slide, Cyril swings high and and low on the swing and Charley dumps a bucket of sand into a truck, all activities she's crazy about herself. Flipping the flaps and seeing the results has her mesmerized. I can't say enough good things about this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars my 3 year old loves this...has enjoyed this book for months
Cute book. Really big. Lots of little flaps to open. Lots of fun things to talk about (if child is speech delayed and you are looking to teach vocabulary interactively)...Concepts up/down and wet/dry are shown very effectively with flaps...Lots of good chances to say "where is....?" and open flaps to find. If your 2-3 year old likes Maisy, this is a good book ...

5-0 out of 5 stars Lots of Flaps and Learning!
This book has so many flaps! My daughter loves them! But, there are so many, and some are small, that it's almost too much for her at nine months. This is definitely a book she'll grow into, though.

The characters are cute and she likes to hunt for them under flaps. The book itself is colorful and oversized, making reading it a lot of fun for both of us. Plus, different pages explore counting and colors and other topics that will make it easy to give your child a little "lesson" while reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars Maisey's Big Flap Book
My 15 month old son loves all of the Maisey books. The lift-the-flap books allow him to participate. He can't wait to see what is under the next flap. I would recommend these books to any toddler. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is YUMMY, other books are YUCKY
This is my daughter's favorite book. There aren't that many good opposite books out there and this one is wonderful. She loves books, but she could read yummy yucky and the 2 others in the series over and over. It is enjoyable for adults too-great illustrations and quite witty-you won't tire of it-believe me-we've read it about 8 times a day since we got it 6 months ago. It is indeed quite YUMMY!

2-0 out of 5 stars Cute, but not for everyone
This book has a cute premise and is adorably illustrated. Unfortunately, it seems the author didn't put much thought into making her work accessible to all families. She lauds fish sticks, burgers and chicken as "yummy," thus excluding vegetarians; and lists chocolate and blueberries as "yummy" making this book off limits to my food-allergic daughter. (Other highly allergenic foods listed as "yummy" include milk and eggs, which should NEVER be given to children under 1 year of age - and yet the drawings depict a very young baby...)

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Book!
We received Leslie's series (Yummy/Yucky, Big/Little, and Quiet/Loud) for our 12-month-old's birthday. They are absolutely his FAVORITE books and he never tires of them. The illustrations are amazing -- I'd like to have larger versions to frame and use for decorations in our nursery! The simple images and bright colors are wonderful for younger babies, while the broader themes and conceptual comparisons are great for imaginations of all ages. You can't go wrong with any of Leslie Patricelli's books!

5-0 out of 5 stars Page after page of learning and fun
This series of books are amazing -- 1) the illustrations are tactile as they appears to be done on canvas -- the texture of the canvas shows through so the illustrations are very interesting to look at + the characters and scenes are unbeleivably cute 2) the concept of opposites is well presented making it fun for young children too find opposites in their own world (and point them out) and 3) the books are simple -- my four year old "reads" these books to my two year old as she can follow what they say by looking at the pictures. A great addition to your "kid library".

5-0 out of 5 stars Well illustrated and funny
This is a great book for toddlers -- and it will make parents laugh, too. The illustrations are beautifully hand-painted, and kids like that they are simple, colorful and cute. It's a fun way to teach kids about what they should and shouldn't eat.
"Yummy Yucky" makes a very nice set with the author's other books (Big Little, Quite Loud), and I hope that they're offered together in a boxed set soon. ... Read more

Like every Boynton book, this is a good book. The words rhyme and flow nicely, and the pictures are really cute, bold, and colorful. As its name suggests, this book talks about opposites "Big and small, short and tall." The major downside in this book is the words. They still flow nicely and rhyme without strain, but they lack some little charm that almost all of the other Boynton books have. Another reason for this is that it is a list of opposites illustrated and carefully placed so they rhyme. The pictures and placement of the words make up for the actual words however. My favorite picture is for the in/out, two turtles, one in its shell, and one standing on top of it. Every page has a cute picture. Also, the way the words are written, not the words themselves, is a wonderful thing. The big is written big, the small small, the tall vertical, and in the slow each letter is separated.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb
I believe my husband and I enjoy reading these more than our 18 month old son enjoys hearing them. She is beyond funny.

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic
These Boynton board books cannot go wrong with the young-uns. My nephews and nieces ask me to read them over and over again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Really fun and educational
This was a fun way to teach my daughter about opposites and she enjoys it being read to her over and over and telling me the difference now.

4-0 out of 5 stars Humorous illustrations for a basic concept
"Opposites," by Sandra Boynton, combines colorful illustrations with a very simplified text in order to teach the concept of opposites to young children. Each page of the book contains one or two pairs of words that function as opposites: "big" and "small"; "heavy" and "light"; "day" and "night"; etc. The illustrations are delightful. Boynton uses a variety of cartoon animals (pig, snail, elephant, turtle, etc.) to demonstrate the meaning of each pair of words.

My only reservation about the book is that it seems to reinforce dualistic thinking into children. I know that "opposites" is an important concept for children to learn, but I also believe that children need to develop a more flexible way to perceive and describe the world. Boynton's "Opposites" gives no indication, for example, that there is a "room temperature" in between "hot" and "cold."

While I recommend this book for both its humorous artwork and educational value, I also recommend that parents take time to teach their kids that there are many variations between the seemingly irreconcilable opposites presented herein. ... Read more

Yum! This delicious counting book offers much more than the numbers one to ten. Each page is a feast of sweet, sugary treats--coconut kisses, peanut-butter cookies, Linzer hearts, and more are carefully concocted and counted by mouse chefs. The tempting desserts are made all the more delectable by Robert Sabuda's brilliant pop-up constructions that leap from the pages, practically into your salivating mouth. Aesthetes will swoon at the magical beauty of this exquisite book, and the engineers in the crowd will wonder, "How did he do that?" Sabuda's astounding creations may be too delicate for excessive youthful probing, but the sing-song rhyme, counting exercises, and joyous paper explosions of confectionery delights make this a wondrous read-aloud for the sweet-toothed of all ages. 5-0 out of 5 stars Wow!
This is an amazing pop-up! It isn't for little fingers though. Lots of tantalizing papers to pull! However, seated on your lap, your child will adore the book. Mr. Sabuda has fabulous books, they are fantastic to look at. I have his butterly book also, and it is just as engaging.
You will love to count cookies with your little one!

5-0 out of 5 stars ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC!
This is a wonderful book for children of all ages. The pop-ups are fun and fanciful and will make you ooh and aah. I dare any adult to look at it and not be thrilled. The paper engineering is remarkable and you will stay awake at nights wondering how the artist could make such wonders. This is in full color as opposed to Sabuda's other works mainly done in white. I would make sure small hands are not allowed to get too friendly with this book so as to keep it functional.

2-0 out of 5 stars disappointed
This book is a let down. The pop-ups are not pretty at all. Everything seems to be the same color.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Pop Up Book
Toddler's love pop-up books so you cannot really go wrong with this book. Sometimes, however, the theatrics detract from a book's goal -- in this case to teach little guys and gals to count. Two other excellent books that I'd also like to recommend are "One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish" by Dr. Seuss and "One, Two, Three: This Book's for Me" by Stuart Samuel.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing pop-up
We got this book as a Christmas gift last year. This pop-up book is like no other that I have seen. The children learn to count as they watch the paper come alive. The rhymes are easy to learn and my 3 year old daughter loves to say them as she turns the pages. Note: She is a very careful child, many children would tear the book as it is kind of delicate. She also counts the cookies and the hiding mice on each page. The colors are explosive and even I like reading this book over and over. I cannot even imagine how he gets paper to do the things that they do... cookies rotate, pinwheels rise out of the page and twirl, and a life sized gingerbread house magically climbs out of the book. I would highly recommend this book as long as they will not handle the book roughly. Better yet, read it with them and teach them to be gentle. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great way to learn the months
This is a book of poetry about the months of the year. It goes through each month and has a cute little poem to go along with it. I love this book because it is a really fun way to learn the months and the poems are very creative. The author's purpose for writing this book was to give children a fun way to learn the months. The children can also learn things about poetry and rhythm through reading this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars a good swingy rhythm for reading aloud
This is a great little book to read aloud- it has a nice rhythm as well as good repetition that little ones like, in the lines about "chicken soup with rice". The child gets to go through the months of the year and go to wonderful places like Bombay and down the Nile, all the while, eating, well, you know what they get to eat. Some kids will have Maurice Sendak's version of ice skating or how to treat roses in their heads for a long time and they won't even know where it came from. Surprise! It came from this little witty book. :-)

5-0 out of 5 stars Can't explain why
This book has been a favorite of mine since I was able to read. It was one of my first introductions to poetry, and the humorous rhymes have been an inspiration to me in my own writing. This is the type of book that college students reminisce about and bond over--it really is that simple and good.

5-0 out of 5 stars Chicken Soup For the Funny Bone
This is a short and sweet little book that can be read in just a few minutes, but every minute will be filled with fun! In cleverly silly rhymes Maurice Sendak takes us through the twelve months and thoroughly entertains us with his characteristic illustrations featuring the little dark-haired boy we've come to know in some of his other stories. The non-sensical inclusion of "chicken soup with rice" in all of the rhymes makes the months all the more memorable and easy for kids to recite, a great little device. The paperback edition is very affordable but I suspect you'll love this one so much that you'll want the hardcover in your library.

5-0 out of 5 stars In December it will be, my snowman's anniversary...
My daughter loves all the "Really Rosie" books. She was introduced to the Really Rosie CD performed by Carole King (also available on Amazon!) on her 1st Birthday and now, a year later, she knows all the songs. As far as the books go, we own: One Was Johnny, Alligators All Around, & Chicken Soup w/Rice. These books are well written with clever art work by Maurice Sendak. Plus, they are really cheap!! Highly recommended :) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Seuss' ABC
We are an international family, meaning that my wife is Japanese, I'm am American, and our daughter is both. We live in Japan, and hence the language our daughter hears the majority of the time is Japanese, which had me worried about her future English ability. This book as done much a lay those fears to rest. The pictures are fun, the sound or word patterns are nice to repeat, and easy to remember, which makes this a wonderful book for a 2 year old. On top of the fun aspect, she was able to recognize many of the letters after reading the book with me only a couple of times. This is a fun way to teach small children the alphabet and letter sounds, although the reader (me) did have to practice several of the pages before a smooth reading was possible, this entertained my daughter to no end!

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is to be sung
One of many alphabet books. But this one has the whimsical rhymes and drawings of Dr. Seuss. Just remember that the book is better when sung. Yes, that's right, sing the book. Just sing it to the tune of the ABC song (also the same tune as Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, and Baa Baa Black Sheep).

The rhymes, the singing, the pictures, all come together to make this a wonderful book, one that really helped my daughter learn the alphabet.

With this book and Sandra Boyntons ABC book (Aardvark admiring, Beavers ballooning, Cats cleaning, etc.), learning the alphabet will be fun fun fun.

4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful
I had this book as a kid, and never forgot "X is very useful if your name is Nixie Knox. It also comes in handy for spelling ax and extra fox." I bought for my two-year-olds a couple of months ago, and they love it. It seems to be making an impression, too; last week I found that Arthur was able to recognize some of the letters in his name. And they're *constantly* quoting "Camel on the ceiling". :-)

Do not bother with the board book edition, though; it's been butchered. They've expunged Nixie Knox, for one thing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Seuss provides his own special type of ABC book
In 1954 "Life" magazine published a report about the problem of illiteracy among the nation's school children and placed part of the blame on the fact that books that were supposed to teach children to read were boring ("See Spot Run. Run Spot run. Fetch the ball, Spot"). Theodore Geisel's publisher sent him a list of 400 words that the author was to cut to 250 words, the number the publisher felt a first grader could absorb, and write a book. "The Cat in the Hat" uses only 220 words and made Dr. Seuss an instant success with beginning readers. Eventually he would go on to write almost four dozen books for children to read all by themselves.

Of course sooner or later Dr. Seuss was going to put out his own alphabet book for beginning readers and in 1963 this book was published. It is, as you would expect, more than a look at the twenty-six letters of the alphabet. Other books will tell you that "A is for Apple" and "Z is for Zebra," but not Dr. Seuss because this book stars with "Aunt Annie's alligator" and ends with a "Zizzer-Zazzer-Zuzz." Young readers will also enjoy the mix of rhyme and absurdity so much that they might not notice Dr. Seuss is also showing them the difference between the big and little versions of each letter.

As I was reading over "Dr. Seuss's ABC," a book that most definitely wants to be read aloud to be fully enjoyed, I was wondering if I should temper my enthusiasm by saying that this is not an ideal choice for a beginning reader's first alphabet book. After all, something simpler, in the traditional "A is for Apple" mode might be more appropriate. But I think there is something to be said for even beginning readers being confronted with the level of sophistication found in this book. After all, it promotes fun as much as reading and young children might never notice the degree to which they are being challenged.

5-0 out of 5 stars Baby's First Love
At four months of age, this was the first book that our son really took note of, allowing us to read all the text. He loved to touch the three-dimensional ladybugs on each page. The paintings are colourful and original, and now that our little boy is over 18 months old, he likes to name the creatures on each page, and point them out to us. It is also a counting book (for future reference). This sort of book is preferable to a book about one character. For the baby-toddler, variety is key. Each page has a new bug or creature to see. Babies like repetition, but they are not interested in page after page of the same picture. There's a fun rhythmn to the simple text, but it's the colourful illustrations and three-dimensional ladybugs that we've enjoyed most. It's a special book that we keep on the night-time books shelf, or the mum-and-me-in-the-afternoon table. Costs a bit more than Barney or Elmo, but worth it!

5-0 out of 5 stars My 10 month old LOVES this book!
This is one of my 10 month old's very favorite books. When he goes to his little bookshelf, this is the book he invariably pulls down and flips though. When I read it to him, he is totally riveted. When he flips through it by himself, I see him touching the ladybugs (since they're 3 dimensional) and exploring the holes on the left.

This book is brilliant and works on many levels. It's very melodic (great rhyming verses w/out being too sing-song-y). Example: "Ten little ladybugs, sitting on a vine. Along came a caterpiller, then there were..." turn the page and you get "nine little ladybugs...."

Plus, you've got each number on the page represented 4 ways -- on the right, you see how many ladybugs remain (i.e., 10 of them). On the left, you've got the number displayed ("10"), plus the holes add up to the same number, and then the verse at the bottom has the number written out ("ten little ladybugs...")

All the characters throughout the book (the caterpillar, the grasshopper, the turtle, etc.) show up at the end so you it's not like they come & go and are forgotten, and each page is beautifully illustrated. The book is also very well put together and I don't fear that the ladybugs are going to come off when my son grabs them. This book is very well used in our house and it's still holding up incredibly well. We highly recommend it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Get this book for your baby!
A friend started reading this book to her son right after he was born. When I babysat him at 5 or 6 months he was holding the page down until I counted all of the ladybugs while he pointed to them with me. It was definitely his favorite book and I couldn't believe that he was tracking print left to right and turning pages correctly at this young age!
So now I buy all of my friends with new babies this book and their children all seem to love it!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have...
As a Child Development Specialist I understand the importance of reading to infants - so you can imagine my disappointment when my baby had an active resentment to my attempts to "read" to her.

Suddenly (like a light switch), at 13 months, my daughter became completely enamored with books. Ten Little Ladybugs is her absolute favorite... and we read it 5-7 times EVERY day. She pulls it out from the coffee table and crawls into my lap for story time. Both the writing and illustrations are magnificent.

Reading this book to my daughter is such a fun experience that I truly believe every child should be fortunate enough to have that important grown-up in their life share this magical book with them.

I now give this book as gifts to all baby and grandparent showers I attend.

Book Description

"While walking through a toy store, the day before today, I overheard a

crayon box with many things to say..." Once upon a time, Shane DeRolf wrote

a poem. It was a deceptively simple poem, a charming little piece that

celebrates the creation of harmony through diversity. The folks at the Ad

Council heard it--and liked it so much that they made it the theme for their

1997 National Anti-Discrimination Campaign for Children. Following on the heels

of nearly a year's worth of televised public service announcements, Random

House is phonored to publish the picture book, illustrated in every color in

the crayon box by dazzling newcomer Michael Letzig and conveying the sublimely

simple message that when we all work together, the results are much more

interesting and colorful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for Diversity & Team Workshops
I use this story with just about every adult and youth group I speak to. I use it to build upon our diversity and how if we all get together (as the crayons do in the book) the picture is complete.

This is a MUST BUY if you work with any age group. The story is so simple, yet powerful.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of my favorites!
I frequently use books to teach lessons (in an indirect way) to students. My area of expertise is teaching students with disabilities.

For the individuals that I teach, it is important to make them think about issues -- rather than "telling" them what to think.

This books lends itself to some great discussions. Recently a friend of mine used it with members of the Student Council at our high school -- they LOVED it!!!

A must have...(along with Giraffes Can't Dance).

5-0 out of 5 stars Not just for kids!
We regularly use this book for team building training for teens and adults. Before "story time" we hand out crayons to the group. The participants are asked what color they would like and then are given a different color (as an example that in life you don't get to pick your gifts and talents!). And then everyone gets to sign the book with their crayon. This book is a hit with all ages and a fun way of dealing with the serious topics of respecting differences and working as a team.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book About Cooperation
This book is great for children at the elementary level. It teaches about cooperation and how to get along with others.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Crayon Box That Talked has a lot to say!
This is my son's favorite book. I used to read it to him (he's 4) but now he reads it to me...and I learn something new everytime he does.

The poem is simple yet profound...it's about a box of crayons that doesn't get along until...well, read it and find out!!!

It's a must have for all home libraries. Adults can learn a lot from this book, too. ... Read more

Learning words and numbers is fun with Big Bird, Elmo, Grover, and the other Sesame Street friends along to help. In the first half of this sturdy oversized book, every page features a letter, A to Z, accompanied by a scene featuring objects starting with that letter. The M spread, for example, shows a moonlit mountain landscape, with Sesame Street detectives Ernie and Bert investigating (with a magnifying glass, of course) the mystery of the missing mitten. Young readers will take pleasure in pointing out the mitten under a tree with a mouse curled up inside and a moose lurking nearby. In the second half of the book, illustrations depict one broom sweeping, swooshing; two hammers pounding, pounding; three big bales of hay; four round rubber tires, and so on up to 20, then continuing with 30, 40, 50, etc., to 100. By then, it takes an entire Sesame Street Fair to show all the items so far enumerated. Two educational books in one terrific treasury! (Ages 4 to 8) --Emilie Coulter ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A True Sesame Street Fan
I bought this book for my 16 month old son. He loves The Sesame Street Word book and thought this would be a good addition to his collection. He likes it okay, but still prefers the Word Book hands down. It starts with the alphabet devoting one to two pages per letter. Each page(s) has the letter and pictures of things starting with the letter. It also has the word naming the picture. I agree with other reviewers..some letters were not depicted very well compared to others. The second half covers numbers 1-20 then skip counts by tens numbers 20-100. All are done with pictures. If you had one book to buy I'd get The Sesame Street Word Book. However if you want to add to other educational books you have, this is a great purchase.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Big Favorite for Toddlers!
My two year old son absolutely LOVES this book! There are many colorful and interesting drawings of objects on every page. I find that my son's vocabulary has greatly increased since Sesame Street Treasury ABC and 123 came into our house since a wide variety of words are clearly depicted. Of course, all the Sesame Street characters are also included in the illustrations which accompany each letter or number. This is a fun and educational book and I would very highly recommend it to anyone buying for a toddler.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for your toddler!
I bought this book for my 14-month-old nephew and he absolutely loves it! The pages are big, yet simple with lots of stuff for baby to look at. Each page is a full color picture devoted to a letter of the alphabet or a number. Perfect for promoting early learning skills. Given the choice, I'd definitely buy this book again.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good sized picture book
Pages are big pictures with one word text next to an object. Apple, airplane, bicycle, boat, etc. Nice feature, 2 books in one. 1st half, abc, 2nd half 1,2,3. I wish there were more words for the neglected letters q,u,v,x,y,z. I liked that the pages where completely colored. No blank areas. Good sized book. All the characters show up in the book, plus a few more which I liked. There is no set theme or story, just the alpha and numbers. Good for little ones that just are learning objects and pointing to them. I enjoy that with my 19 month old son. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Fun tool, beautiful pictures, but. . . .
Our twenty month old loves the Baby Einstein flashcards (the animals set in particular). The pictures are clear and crisp and beautifully rendered. I agree with everything the previous reviewer said, but one thing was missing that bothers me about the cards. They are printed on a fairly thin cardboard material. While the enclosed brochure says the cards are sturdy enough for young hands to handle, they are also thin enough for young hands to bend and mash! After two days, about half a dozen cards are bent in half and feature large creases. Certainly the cards are still functional and have not been severely damaged. But I wish they were made of more sturdy/durable materials, more like the board books themselves, that could not be so easily bent. I imagine there will be ripped cards at some point. We'll try to discourage him from bending them in the future (HA!), and in the meantime probably buy a second set for when the first one wears out . . .

5-0 out of 5 stars We love these flash cards!
My 2 year old has been raised on Baby Einstein products since birth. We have enjoyed the melodic strains of Baby Bach, learned colors with Baby Van Gogh, explored words with Baby Shakespeare and are now expanding his knowledge with Baby Einstein Nature Discovery Cards. These flash cards are printed on heavy card stock. Each card is large enough for his little hands to manipulate and have a glossy finish that makes it easy to wipe clean should his little hands be sticky at the time (which they usually are). There are 29 cards in this set. On the front of each card is a beautiful photograph of the subject (ocean, mountains, grass, sea jellies, flower) with the title of the subject clearly spelled out. On the back of each card are simple facts for baby to understand.

Example: On the "Tree" card, the facts are as follows - Trees have been on earth longer than any other living thing. Can you think of a kind of tree that many people decorate during a holiday? Trees are very important to people and animals. Trees give us oxygen, food, shelter, wood and paper products. Trees are the largest living thing on earth. Some animals live in trees. Can you name and animal that lives in a tree?

These cards are beautifully made. My son loves looking at them, and has shown an amazing recall of what he has learned. Included in the pack of cards is a Parents Guide on how to use them as well as 4 blank cards that you can use to make your own nature cards.

I highly recommend Baby Einstein Nature Discovery Cards to the parents of any young child. There's a big world out there for them to discover and Baby Einstein makes it possible. Even when you can't get to the ocean or mountains, Baby Einstein will bring the ocean and mountains to you. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My son couldn't put this one down!
My son is seven and working his way through 5th grade math. This book reviewed some concepts for him and introduced him to others. He thought it was fascinating! There's a lot of information packed into these pages, and the author delivers it all in a very entertaining manner. Don't let the ABC picture book concept fool you, this book was designed with the help of 4th-6th grade students and teachers. I give it five stars!

4-0 out of 5 stars "Google:" mind-boggling and well worth a goggle.
"G is for Google" explains complex math concepts in a palatable format. From "abacus" to "zillion," detailed descriptions are combined with fun cartoons and illustrations that bring math concepts down to earth. Even adults can learn a thing or two from this book: for instance, how the German city of Konigsberg, with its seven bridges, came to demonstrate the network theory. How many grown-ups really know the quantity of a google, the two ways of writing a google, and how this number got the name "google" in the first place?

Armed with this book, I was finally able to answer some of my son's questions, such as "what comes after a trillion?" Answer: a quadrillion, a quintillion, a sextillion, and so forth. This information is filed under "z is for zillion," where it is explained that a zillion is not a real number, but merely means "a lot." (One of many math myths dispelled in the book.) Some other terms that are explained include: "fibonacci," "exponent," and "probability," as well as the less intimidating "jupiter" and "diamond."

While the alphabet format is more conducive to browsing than reference, there is a glossary of math terms in the back of the book. "G is for Google" is primarily for ages nine and up, although some younger children who are particularly interested or gifted in math may benefit. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Simple Message for Everyone
I would echo the reviews that praise this book and also add that it can be a lighthearted surprise for grownups to look through too. I am a therapist - I was shopping for books, this one caught my eye, and I put it in my waiting room amongst the magazines & other books there. I can't tell you how many people I see looking at this 'okay book' when I come out to collect them for their appointments! (Then they put it down with a sheepish smile when they see that someone saw them reading it...) :-) It seems to be a whimsical and refreshing reminder for all of us in an occasionally conformity-driven society that we're good like we are. If you get it for your kid(s), enjoy it with them.

4-0 out of 5 stars great but not durable
My daughter loved this book to death - it's death literally. I'm buying a 2nd copy, but why arn't more of Todd Parr's books in board book format? That would be OKAY by me!

5-0 out of 5 stars First Graders Really Think This Book Is Better Than Okay
This is a wonderful little book! My first graders love to read this book over and over. They love the bright pictures and simple drawings. The children begged to write their own okay books which we did! This is another "Good Night Moon" but for the beginning reader set. I've now gone through my fifth classroom copy!

5-0 out of 5 stars It's okay to buy this book
Yeah, that was corny, but it was too obvious. Anyway, I came across this book in one of those educational toy stores. What grabbed me was the vibrant colors and the simple, yet important values it communicates. There are two basic messages. The first is not to be biased or prejudiced against others because of superficial things that don't reflect who they are as people (like how big their house is or how they dress). The second message is that you should have the courage to be who you want to be and to express that. My son has been captivated by this book since he was only a few months old and I am looking forward to the day when he will be able to take away the important messages from it. It's comforting to have this book as a tool so that I can help my son grow up to be confident, respectful and happy. As do most parents, we have a few dozen books now. None is a substitute for "Okay." I've evaluated Todd Parr's other books online, but was less impressed and haven't bought any yet. But this one is a gem.

5-0 out of 5 stars The OKay book is fantastic!
We originally bought this book for our fifteen month old little girl because we thought it was cute that the book matched her initials (O.K.). We were very happy to find out that she loves the book's bold, fun pictures. Her mother and I love this too as well as its great message of tolerance and acceptance (without over-doing it). We immediately bought the rest of Todd Parr's titles. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Boring
This book is simple and kindof boring. The illustrations are not very realistic. My children never got interested in it. There are only a handful of pages with one animal per page. it isn't very exciting at all.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Spanish/English Series
Raising a multilingual child is difficult particularly in our mono-lingual culture. It is all too easy to resort to the English default. As a parent I have to make an extra conscious effort to speak Spanish to my daughter and familiarize her ear with the sounds she will hopefully use one day. In this regard bi-lingual books have been essential in helping me to set aside Spanish-time. I have read this series of board books by Rebecca Emberley to my daughter since she was 3-months old and they are still among her favorites at 15 months. These books are ideal for interacting with your baby and toddler in a multilingual fashion. The illustrations are bright and colorful and the pages withstand repeated vigorous turning by little hands. Each page presents a single word in English and Spanish for added comprehension, yet ideal for short attention spans. Thank you for a wonderful series.

4-0 out of 5 stars GREAT series of books to learn words not just espanol!!
