Book Description

Hi dee ho! It's off to a picnic we go! One hundred very hungry ants hurry to sample the delights of a picnic, but marching in single file seems too slow for 100 empty tummies. The smallest ant of all suggests they travel in 2 rows of 50, four rows of 25 . . . and the division begins. One Hundred Hungry Ants is not only a spirited and whimsical story, but also serves as an enjoyable visual introduction to math. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One Hundred Hungry Ants
This book was enjoyed by myself and the kids I read it to. The ants on their way to a picnic held our attention with anticipation of how the ants were going to form thier lines. The 100 ants changed formation several times and it shows of all the possibilites there are with using different rows with the same 100 ants. It's a good way to introduce higher numbers and can include lessons on adding, multiplying and even subtraction since the little guy took off in the end. I found very enjoyable because of the cute repitional phrase that allowed the kids to feel familar with this book very fast.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun, useful, and cleverly illustrated
My kindergartener and I were talking about money, one day, and he volunteered that he'd learned that ten dimes make a dollar when his kindergarten teacher read "One Hundred Hungry Ants". This book has no discussion of money, but it teaches that 100 equals 2 times 50, 4 times 25, 5 times 20, and 10 times 10, just the right lesson for him at that time. The rhythm of the rhyming works pretty well, and the pictures are very clever, adding a lot of enjoyment to the story. This one is worth reading again and again, if that's the kind of child you have.

4-0 out of 5 stars How the ants come marching (by the numbers)
As you might guess from the title of this little book, one hundred hungry ants are marching towards a picnic to get some yummies for their tummies. However, marching single file in a line 100 ants long is going to take way too long to get from where they are to where they want to be and the littlest ant is worried the food will all be gone by the time they get there. So he comes up with the idea of marching in 2 lines of 50 instead as a way of getting their faster.

That is just the first of several ideas the littlest ant has about how to divide up 100 ants in this story told by Elinor J. Pinczes and illustrated with what I assume are colored wood block prints. There are plenty of counting books, but "One Hundred Hungry Ants" deals with issues of multiplication and division. It seems to me that the key thing here is that sooner or later in reading this book young readers will be anticipating the littlest ant next suggestion. The front flap of the dust jacket points out that this book provides the math skills young kids can use to make change for a dollar and that certainly has to be a good thing, well worth the learning.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just a Mom's Humble Opinion!
There may be many books about math, but I have yet found any that go beyond 10 or sometimes 20. I found this book interesting, fun and quite beautiful with its slate blue muted tones. I thought the graphics where so calming. The added bonus was my 7 year old daughter enjoyed the book and wanted to read it over and over!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for a 1st grade teacher!
I use this book every year with my first graders and they love it! They think the illustrations are funny, they eagerly predict how the ants will divide their lines next, they want to hear it read more than once (Read it again! Pleeeese Miss B?) The children also like to take it off the shelf in the classroom library and share/discuss the story later with a friend. This is one of my favorite math books, not only because it teaches a concept but also because it makes kids laugh! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The Goodenoughs Get in Sync Review by Lisa Angel
The Goodenoughs Get in Sync by Carol Stock Kranowitz was a great book to read because it so helpful in the classroom. Many times we think that a child is just being mean or annoying when in reality it is a sensory disorder and the child can not help it.I felt the definitions provided to certain words such as sensory under-responsivity, auditory defensiveness and visual defensiveness, to name a few, were extremely enlightning. My son has a friend who has a sensory disorder.I didn't know about the disorder until he came over to spend the night. When it came time to go up the stairs to my son's bedroom he began to freak out.Of course, I called his mom and she explained everything to me and I began to understand. This is a wonderful book to recommend to her.I also enjoyed reading about each family member and how the sensory disorders varied so much. However, each had their own issues to deal with, they really stuck together as a family and supported one another.Even the dog had sensory issues.I would really recommend this book to teachers so that they have better sense of some of the behaviors that go on in the classroom.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Goodenoughts Get In Sync
It is NOT AMAZING to me that Carol Kranowitz has done it again! I know how LIFE CHANGING her book: The Out-of-Sync Child was for me and for my son! That book made LIGHT BULBS go off in my head and I was able to read it inserting my son's name on every page after I had read page number two! Her resources brought HOPE and took away so much self-doubt, guilt, fear, sadness, frustration, etc...!All of her books are something I could put my hands around, my head into and helped open my heart! Her books CHANGED my life and changed "WHO" my son is FOREVER! Doctors, parent, teacher, grandparents,etc...need to read this book as well and share it with the children they are trying to understand/help! Perhaps they will see themselves on these pages?
BRAVO CAROL!

5-0 out of 5 stars Greatest resource for SI kids!
Carol Kranowitz has done it again!I cried when I read her book "The Out of Sync Child" 6 years ago after my son's therapist diagnosed him with Sensory Integration Dysfunction at age 3; his behavior all finally made sense.I wasn't just a neurotic mom!Over the years, we've been very open with both our boys about their "hidden disabilities".This book now helps them understand on their level what is happening with their neurological systems. And, it helps them share their differences with kids (and adults) who aren't neurologically challenged.I particularly appreciate the fact that each of the Goodenoughs struggles with his/her own sensory issues so you get the bigger picture of how sensory processing disorders affect people daily in all activities.

This book is a must for every therapist and family dealing with SI issues!Thank you, Carol, for your ongoing support of children! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Stuck on this one...
My two-year-old daughter really loved this book.It got us through quite a number of pottying sessions, and now we're all hoping to find another sticker book of this quality and size. One observation: we didn't re-use the stickers much (an advertised feature of the book), but really enjoyed their repositionable quality, which came in handy when my DD wanted to repeatedly practice positioning the stickers exactly over their outlines...I would definitely recommend this for the toddler set.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Learning Tool for 2-Year-Old!
My 2-year-old son loves this book.We find a missing object and ask, "Where did the (orange, balloon, etc.) go?"Then we look for it on the sticker page and he puts it in the correct place. He has learned to say so many new words! The stickers are large and easy to see in this book.My son can't get enough of this book! You should only let a young child use it with you since the stickers could be a choking hazard if your child still puts everything in his/her mouth. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great learning book!
This is a wonderful book to teach your children to tie your shoes, my 5 year old son loves it and has learned to tie his shoes in a week! Will definately recommend this book to all my friends.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful way to teach children how to tie shoes!
My 4-year-old daughter practiced with this book for about two weeks and is now the only child in her class that can tie her own shoes. She is so proud of herself! I think this is a wonderful book, with an excellent use of rhyme to teach someone how to tie shoes. I would recommend it for any child who is ready to try to tie their shoes on their own.

3-0 out of 5 stars Teaches "rabbit ears" method!
I was disappointed with this book and returned it. It teaches tying laces by making two loops and tying the loops together. I was looking for a book that taught the "one-loop, wrap around, push through" method.

On the plus side, it is a very sturdy book that would take much abuse from a small child.

5-0 out of 5 stars It did the trick...
After spending a few months trying to teach my then four year old how to tie her shoes (and succeeding only in frustrating her), her babysitter gave her this book as a gift. Within a week or two, she was tying her shoes perfectly! I like the books construction (it's a board book) and the model shoe and illustrations that teach shoe tying with a little catchy poem. The shoe model at the bottom of the book has one lace in it that is red on one end and yellow on the other and the different colors makes shoe tying easier for beginners. This book is now my "standard" gift to children turning four.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book, but dangerous for young toddlers
The book is a wonderful book, but the lace is not anchored to the book. Your toddler can pull it out and wrap it around his or her neck. Make sure you anchor it to the book (with glue or tape on the back) ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
What a cool book! I think it is funny how the doorbell keeps ringing and ringing. I can learn how to show equal shares.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for Childeren of Any Age
This a great book for almost every child. I am an Education Major at Pima Community College in Tucson, Az. I work also work at a Pre-school and the childeren love this book (Childeren ages 12 months to 3 1/2 years). We read it atleast once a day. This is a great book because they don't know it but they are learning how to add and subtract, using cookies. It's great because if you read it aloud to them and then show them how many kids show up, then they start to realize how many cookies are actually there, and then it gets to how many cookies each child will get. The first time I read this book to my kids, they loved it and after the second time they stated to pick up on the subratcion part of the book and now every time we read the book they can come up with the anserws on thier own. It's really amazing to me how they will start to pick it up.

4-0 out of 5 stars good book to learn how to read at a little bit higher level
This book is good for children that are learning how to add and subtract. For example in the book the mom made 12 cookies and they had to spit them in half and then two more people came and then 4 more people came until every one only had gotten one cookie. Also this book teaches that it is important to share.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun to Read
This book was one of my daughters favorites when she was little. She giggled every time I said, with great zeal, "And the doorbell rang"! My house has always been quite active which made this story perfect for us. For any parent with a busy life, this book with tickle you to the core. I enjoyed reading it as much as my daughter enjoyed listening to it. Truly a fun read!

4-0 out of 5 stars A user friendly story with great illustrations.
I have got a lot of mileage out of this book. With my own son, it has brought back wonderful memories of his own Grandma's cookies. As a Day Care Provider, I have delighted my day care children with this story during "circle time". They would get a kick out of following the kitty in the illustrations. As an investigations math instructor, I have relied on this story for Grade levels 2&3 to explain the concept of fractions and division. Every kid that has heard this story, for whatever the reason, gives it a two thumbs up. ... Read more

When George's mother tells her son to bark, he meows. She patiently explains that "Cats go meow. Dogs go arf. Now, bark, George." But he quacks! Then oinks. Then moos. Becoming less patient and more exasperated, George's mom takes him to the vet, who reaches deep down inside the errant pup, and, much to everyone's surprise, pulls out a cat! Then a duck, a pig, and finally a cow. George is cured, and barks at last! On the way home, his proud mother wants to show off her convincingly doglike son to everyone on the street. But when she says, "Bark, George," he simply says, "Hello." This is the simplest offering yet from Jules Feiffer--creator of the delightful picture books Meanwhile and I Lost My Bear. Still, his cartoonish drawings are intensely expressive, alive, and hilarious. None of it will be lost on the youngest of readers who will giggle every time George fails to bark, every time the vet extracts a new animal, and at the final punchline, too. In a world of often overdone or underdone picture books, this fine Feiffer creation is just right. (Click to see a sample spread. Copyright 1999 by Jules Feiffer. 5-0 out of 5 stars Funny story and cute illustrations
My 14 month old loves this book! He already understands the humor in it and laughs when George meows, moos, etc. There is even humor added in for the parents (the long latex glove). I would definitely recommend this book to anyone with a toddler or preschool-aged child...When we read this story, we replace the "goes"'s and the "went"'s with says and said. By the time my son is old to read for himself and catch on to what we're doing, he'll have outgrown this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Silly Dog!
I got this book for my son, who is 2 years old. He requests it eagerly, and enjoys saying "silly DOG" each time George belts out the wrong sound. This is the type of kids book that will have your child repeating with you, and adding things on his own interactively. It is a fun book with cute illustrations and punchline. As a mom who loves to read fun books, I recommend it for all parents with young kids.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Doggone Funny!
Kids will laugh hard at the drawings, especially of George's exasperated mother ! This is a classic and a keeper.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply WONDERFUL!!
I read a review of this book that intrigued me enough to buy it.... 6 years ago! I read it to my son when he was little and it quickly became his favorite. He would even tell people all about George the "goofy" dog. Eventually he moved on to other books over the years. Then, shortly after his baby sister arrived, I quietly watched unnoticed as he brought out the book and read it to her! He told me later that he had "shared" the book with his sister. He was so thrilled to be able to pass on the fun of the animal sounds. I would recommend this book to all parents! It will be a much loved book that your child won't soon forget!

5-0 out of 5 stars Delightful
This is the story of a puppy that can't seem to bark - instead he makes other animal noises. His smart mother takes him to the vet who knows just how to correct the problem. This book makes for a quick read if you can stop giggling. The illustrations of the vet's expressions are very funny. The ending is a delightful surprise. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My Fav When I Was Little!
I had several Richard Scarry books when I was teeny tiny, and I remember loving each one! I am now 29 and about to have my first child and was so excited to come across this book. It will be a great addition to my collection that my mother has saved from when I was a child. I can't wait to share this book with my little one. I hope you and yours enjoy Mr. Scarry's line of children's books as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars This Book is Fabulous!!
My daughter is 2 and absolutely LOVES this book! She's learned so much from it!! Every night this is the book she wants to read! What I love about it is everytime we read it she learns something new--the latest she's learned is the 12 months! I recommend this to everyone---it's also a GREAT gift!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Kids' Books Ever!
This book and the First Word Book were my first Richard Scarry books, and two of the first books I ever had. They were wonderful! Each page is full of detailed illustrations of everyday items and their names. I had most of the Richard Scarry books, and they really helped me to learn vocabulary, and quite a few important lessons on behavior along the way! Now I am a mommy, and I can't wait for my little girl to be old enough to get her Best First Book Ever!

4-0 out of 5 stars Not best FIRST book
This is a great book, I agree. However, it is not the best FIRST book unless your child isn't seeing any books until age 2. My daughter just turned one, and for her the pictures are still too busy. 5-0 out of 5 stars Take this book to the grocery store
We found this book at the library and I'm buying my own copy. It is colorful, has the alphabet in capital and lower case letters, AND they managed to find a fruit or veggie to go with every letter! There is also a section on the pronunciation and a little history of each fruit/vegetable in the back of the book (library edition).

My boys are 3 yrs old and have been coming to the grocery store with me since birth. However, they are also starting to become picky eaters. I plan to take this book to the grocery store and we can learn alphabet letters and find the produce items to match. Maybe I can even expand their taste preferences as we try a new "letter" each visit. Now if they just had a little cookbook to go with this book.....

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book to teach fruit, alphabet and colors
My daughter liked this book. She learned the alphabet, colors and some names of fruits. This book has it all. Good book for 3 years and up.

5-0 out of 5 stars A classic
Excellent! All three of my children adored the board book version of Eating the Alphabet. It provides a nice way to expose toddlers to a variety of interesting fruits and vegetables -- they get a kick out of repeating words like "jicama" and "jalapeno". Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Delicious!
The board book version of this title is cute, but treat yourself ( and your child, too!) to the full-sized hardcover edition. It's a feast for the eyes! Yum!

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Nice
This is a very nice board-book. The illustrations are bright and eye-catching, featuring all the usual fruits and vegetables as well as some of the more exotic ones. Each letter is printed in both upper- and lower-case, as are all the names of the fruits and vegetables (Yy YAM yam). This board book--based on a picture book for slightly older children--is probably best suited for toddlers who can identify some of the familiar items. It would be an ideal gift for a vegetarian or vegan family as it shows absolutely no animal products! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Not your usual Dr. Seuss - but terrific!
My daughter is a huge fan of this book - and so am I! I won't say that about too many children's books... As cute as some of them are, I can only make so many dog noises and elephant sounds in a day (over and over). But this is a book that we both agree on.

First of all, the book is beautiful. The colors are great. I love the illustrations. They're colorful but subtle, not your normal "in your face" Seuss (of which I am a fan).

Second, the book is just the right length for a toddler. Some of the other Seuss, while funny, is long. This is just about perfect.

Mostly, however, I like the message of this book: that you can be in one mood one day and another mood another day and that's okay. I think really small children, especially toddlers, have a difficult time understanding the concepts of mad and glad and sad... We expect them to be "on" at happy all day long. But they really are just little people and they experience different feelings, too. I like that this book says that's okay.

Yeah, the message is a little "touchy feely" but the book doesn't come across that way at all. It's Seussy-y without the camp, but with the same sense of rhyme and optimism. It works.

5-0 out of 5 stars A beautifully illustrated book and unlike any other Seuss
My Many Colored Days was written a long time ago, but Dr Seuss felt that he couldn't adequately illustrate it. Steve Johnson and Lou Fancher provided paintings which add incredible dimension to the text.

The result is a wonderful visual metaphor for presenting the gamut of emotions and a clever way of talking about feelings with one's child, whether it's a grey day and we feel down; a yellow day where we're busy as a bee, or a mixed up day.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love it!
When I read this book to my children (ages 4 & 1) I always try to emphasize the emotions & feelings behind each color & painting using my voice...I think it is an excellent book for opening up a dialogue with kids about their emotions & learning how to express them.

The paintings are inspiring but ordinary in a way that when you look at them you think "I could paint that!". Really a great, great book! It's a continuous favorite in our house, a must have for every child's book shelf!

I recommend the board book for younger kids because it IS so well loved & read. The images on the pages definately call out to be touched by little hands!

5-0 out of 5 stars tomorrow could be different
I would highly recommend this book to anyone--young & old alike! I think it is especially good reading for those feeling like they are in a slump and finding it hard to move on. This book shows that today you might feel like it's a black, brown, or purple day, but if you hold on until tomorrow, you may have a yellow or pink day. Although this book was purchased for my two toddlers, who both love it, this is a coffee-table book at our house.

5-0 out of 5 stars My 10 month old's favorite book
I wouldn't have expected it but this is my 10 month old son's favorite book. I think he likes the bright colors. Also the way the text is written inspires you to change your voice which he really has enjoyed. The bright colors, simple but cute graphics, short and rhyming verse all combine to make a really neat book. This is the first book that my son has really showed interest in, he actually coos and babbles and touches the pages as I read it to him. He sits through the whole book and likes it to be read to him more than once every day. I've tried "Goodnight Moon", "Guess How Much I Love You", "The Runaway Bunny", "Mother Goose", etc but no other book has fasinated him so far as much as this book. I'd highly recommend it. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent follow up to Alphabet Adventure
I bought this book for my four year old daaughter because we both loved Alphabet Adventure so much. The story centers on little x this time. He decidedes to run away because he is a letter that isn't used very much. All of the other letters embark on an adventure to bring him home. This book is especially perfect for this time of year. There is a spooky castle and a monster M that evokes images of Halloween. At the end of the story little x realizes that he is a very special letter after all. Children love the idea of a mystery and the illustrations in this book are really wonderful. Everytime you read it you will see something new. My daughter especially loves the page where the letters match up to an object that they begin with. My daughter has learned a lot from this book and Alphabet Adventure. I highly recommend them both. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very clever, well-illustrated book!
This is a very clever book, with comparisons such as "Ladies are big, lady bugs are little". The illustrations are beautifully hand-painted, and kids like that they are simple, colorful and cute. This makes a great set with the author's other books (Yummy Yucky, Quite Loud), and I hope that they're offered together in a boxed set soon.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book!!!!!
I have this book and i like it alot!!! I think the bears are cute in it!! i love to read it over and over again!! Great Book!!!!!!!!!!!!=-}

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have for begining readers
I am in my 20's now, but I still have my copy of "Bears in the Night" that was passed on to me from my cousin in the 1970's. That book holds so many great memories for me. My mom and I read it together many, many times and was it especially helpful in teaching sight words. It is funny too, I still laugh everytime I think of the bears sneaking up "Spook Hill"!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great illustrations
In this story a group of 7 little bears creep out of bed and out of their house to go adventuring during the night. Their adventures take them all the way "Out the window. Down the tree. Over the wall. Under the bridge. Around the lake. Between the rocks. Up Spook Hill." On Spook Hill they meet with a creature that sends them all clamoring back to their safe bed; an owl.

The pictures are done mostly in shades of blue, in order to make it look like nighttime. I think they do a wonderful job of conveying the mood- the lantern gives off yellow light and adds a neat effect.

The story is told in a very, very simple way. It is told entirely in short, three word sentences, which fit the sneaky mood of the bears perfectly. The lack of elaboration draws the eye to the drawings to look for explanation there. This works amazingly well, and makes for a fun, concise book.

5-0 out of 5 stars My 3-year-old's favorite.
I've been reading this book (an old copy - the one my dad read to me) to my 3-year-old son lately, and I've noticed it has helped open up his vocabulary to a wide array of prepositional phrases.

The book focuses on these - "Down the tree. Over the wall. Under the bridge. Around the lake." etc. - with words and illustrations. My son had a decent grasp on the concept of prepositions (he understood them when he heard them) - but after a few readings of this book, they've begun showing up in his speech.

The book is a fun one. Repeat readings, and my son still laughs at the ending.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great start
This is the book that taught me how to read, plain and simple. Before I picked it up, I couldn't read. When I was through with it, I could. Seems like magic now. ... Read more

Kids love to hammer, saw, turn bolts, and build things. But of coursereal tools are a little too hazardous for those tiny fingers. So Caldecott Honorartist Stephen T. Johnson (Alphabet City) came up with afun and educational solution: a combination toolbox and book! With its sevensturdy cardboard tools, bolts and screws that really turn, and erasable slate, this handy kit will provide hours of entertainment--and may keep thoseyoungsters out of the grownup toolbox. Each two-page spread features a removableworking tool and a different shape to work on. Turn the hand drill in thepremade holes in a triangle. Pound pretend nails into a star shape. Cut a pieceof "wood" into two rectangles--with a satisfying rasping sound! While they'rebecoming amateur carpenters, children will learn some basic skills in counting, shapes, and colors; on each colorful background, readers see one piece of paper, two pieces of wood, three holes, and so on up to six nails. This handsome redbook includes a pencil, ruler, saw, drill, screwdriver, wrench, hammer, andslate for drawing up plans. Smaller children may need some help prying the toolsout of their snug compartments, at least until the tools get a little worn in.(Ages 3 to 6) --Emilie Coulter ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Most Favored Christmas Gift!!
I'm a big fan of interactive and pop-ups and this book is no disappointment! My 4 year old son loves this working tool book, and true, if you want it preserved, supervise, but what fun is that? I'd say it's for ages 4 to 9 - to age 94! I had fun with him. The cardboard is as sturdy and thick as possible - get two if you really care about replacing parts. The Sketch pad in the front of the book created all types of creative imagery play for my son. He definitely favored this gift over modern commercial type toys. FUN FUN FUN!!

2-0 out of 5 stars Great Idea, But Breaking Tools Far From "Toddler-Proof"
A terrific concept, clever and visually appealing, teaches children not just how tools work but also about shapes, colors and counting. Parents and children alike want to love this book, which is why it is so disappointing to find that the "sturdy cardboard" tools break quite easily after being played with just a couple of times by a typical toddler.

My 3-year-old boy was in tears when both the wrench and hammer broke during the first day of use because he bent them. Toddlers will bend toys if they are bendable! When we taped the tools back together, they no longer fit into their slots.

This seems to be a book that evolved from the author's great idea into the publisher's slick package. In the end, it is frustrating and sadly impractical for its recommended age group.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a great interactive book
I am a nanny. I get this present almost every year for any family I work with that has 3yr to 5yr old children. This book is not for children who are hard on their toys. This book is great because children can play with the thick cardboard toy tools in the book or around the house. Any child that I have ever sat for has played for about 30 min with this book at a time. You have to remember that this book is not a toy, but children love to play with the tools so much that you would think it was one. Any book that can keep a 4 year olds interest for 5 min. is a keeper in my book. Plus they are learning at the same time...without something that requires batteries!! Goodluck and I hope you find this book as enjoyable as I know your children will.

1-0 out of 5 stars Boring!
1. It needs an adult to get the pieces out of the book.
2. Once out, they held the attention of our 4-year-old for about 5 minutes. They don't "do" anything.
3. Would have been a complete waste of money, apart from the fact that it kept our 16-month-old amused for 30 minutes.

1-0 out of 5 stars rapidly destroyed
If you like toys which won't hang around for years this is perfect for you. My son wanted to really screw and pound and had a little difflculty at first understanding the limitations of these tools and keeping them in the context of this book. There are many better choices for play tools out there, save yourself from having to deal with the disapointment of your child when his screwdriver or drill tears in two. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Not sturdy enough for toddlers
The idea is a good one, but the very first thing my toddler did was rip the frog off the page. Also, it's not board book, and it doesn't have regular paper pages, it's something in between. More like oak tag folded over to create stiff pages. Pat the Bunny is the only one of this series that I would recommend.

1-0 out of 5 stars Why mess with the original?
Unfortunately, this is one of my 19-month old's favorite books, so I am subjected to it at least 8 times a day. The original, Pat the Bunny, is a sweet book that has an inherant, simple appeal for toddlers. Dated though it may be, it still retains a freshness that my whole family enjoys. I thought I was getting more of the same when I purchased Pat the Puppy and Pat the Pony, but this was not to be. These two books are fraught with political-correctness of a most annoying nature -- why does Granny have to go jogging, and Grandpa bake the brownies? Aren't small children comfortable with seeing stereotypical behavior in books? Give children more credit, and trust them to know that not all families are alike. They don't have to see it in a book to know that people have differences and these differences are to be celebrated. Another annoyance is that the book has too many words. Part of Pat the Bunny's appeal was its simplicity. I don't need to know that the puppy's name is Bailey, and now that I've patted him, do I need to tickle his tummy as well? By the time I read all those words, my daughter is expecting me to turn the page to get on to the next scenario.
Oh, and there's one small grammatical mistake -- we are asked whether Granny's sunglasses feel shiny. Is "shiny" something touchable?
I would not have purchased this book had I known there would be such a feeble attempt at copying the original. In fact, I would rate this book with zero stars if it weren;t for the fact that my daughter likes it. Ugh. Save your money.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not the best of the series
We have "Pat the Bunny", "Pat the Cat", "Pat the Pony" and this book, "Pat the Puppy". I would say that this is not as interesting to our child as "Pat the Bunny" and "Pat the Cat", but it is better than "Pat the Pony".

Tom and Sarah visit their grandparents. First they pat the puppy. The tabs are sturdy, and allow a child to make a frog leap, help the kids rock in a chair, and wag a dog's tail.

Mild criticisms: the scratch 'n' sniff brownie doesn't really smell like a brownie; it doesn't really smell like anything on the planet, though it is not an evil smell. Using smooth sunglasses as an interactive experience is pretty [bad]. And twice there are two-page scenarios (grandpa putting pictures (?) on the VCR and grandma taking off her jogging (!) shoes) where the child is introduced to the activity and then turns the page to experience an interactive aspect to it (turning a wheel to change the pictures -- you know, just like a real VCR! -- and unstrapping the velco on grandma's running shoes, respectively). For continuity's sake and to facilitate the limited attention span of young children, it would be better if the two pages faced each other.

It's nice that the kids visit their grandparents, and that grandma and grandpa are not stereotypes (grandpa bakes, grandma runs!), but if you don't have "Pat the Bunny" and "Pat the Cat", the best of the series, I would get those first.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pat the Puppy
This is a wonderful book and a wonderful way to learn more about your child! My daughter (age 3) loves this book, because it allows her to interact as we read along. Another thing that is great about it, is that it describes the children leaving home to visit their grandparents. Then it leads you to daily activities at their grandparent's house. Lastly, the children return home to their pet wagging it's tail happy to see them! It's a wonderful way to teach a child that visiting their grandparents can be a lot of fun! My daughter also loves, Pat the Bunny, Pat the Cat, and Pat the pony!

5-0 out of 5 stars This is one of my daughters favorites!

5-0 out of 5 stars Lovin' Peekaboo
I took a chance and bought this- for far more- at a book store for my daughter who was 4 months old at the time. I couldn't believe how much she loved it and loves it still at 7 months. Rubbing the furry animals inside is her favorite part. I find myself getting into the book as well by making the sounds the animal would make. A good deal, price wise, too. The book store was almost double the cost! I plan to buy more of his books soon.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Bedtime Reading
My five month old is just learning the concept of peekaboo, and this book gives us both smiles each evening. The large font is good too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for textures & teaching concept of object permanence
My 10 month old is in LOVE with this book. She squeals with delight when she touches the various animal's fur. Its a great way to introduce various textures, colors and animals. The other reason I bought it was b/c she was going through separation anxiety and playing peekaboo as well as reading peekaboo books has really helped her begin to feel less anxious about not always being able to see me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Book Involves Sight, Sound and Touch.
"Peekaboo Kisses" by Barney Saltzberg.

Recently, I gave this book to my granddaughter, Tabitha, (22 months), who was obviously delighted. Each page brings up a different animal: kitten, puppy, sheep, duckling and then a mouse. As you say the words, "Peekaboo!", you open the flap of a page and there is the animal. Each animal has a tiny hole with the appropriate material: the "wool" for the sheep actually looks like some wool. The gray "fur" for the mouse, the last animal, is also a squeaker. An adult finger can cause the "Squeak!" every time, but Tabitha's little fingers had difficulty now and then.

Finally, you come to the last page. As it is opened (with the word, "Peekaboo!", of course), there is a metallic mirror where the young reader can recognize himself. When asked, "Who is that in the book?", my granddaughter would answer with her nickname, "Tabby". So, this book is excellent for both tactile training and self-recognition, while providing entertainment for both adult and child.

5-0 out of 5 stars My son loves this book!
