5-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource
As a math teacher, I love to refer to this book and use theactivities often.I especially liked the section on decimals.Students can have difficulty realizing how big or small a decimal is and there is an activity that allows them to group the pictoral and the number version according to its size.It allows the students to see that a decimal close to 0 has very little shaded pictorally and that the decimal number starts with 0, 1, or 2.That is very important for those visual learners. Also, the estimation activities are very good because it covers estimation in terms of how many are in a space and estimates where rounding and then performing an operation are necessary. As a math resource teacher I have people coming to me a lot and when I show them activities from this book they are pleased and one has even bought it herself! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
This is a great book. My 14-month-old son loves it. He loves touching the monkey faces and putting his fingers through the holes. He also loves the tune that we sing with the book and I'm sure he'll only love it more as he grows older and can sing along and jump higher on the bed!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for children!
My son loves this book! He really enjoys the way each page rhymes and loves touching the monkey faces that protrude from the pages. It's nice because it is practically a board book, and he cannot tear the pages. This is a great story to add to your child's collection! Another good book that is similar to this one, is, Ten Little Ladybugs, by Melanie Gerth.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cute Monkeys
My two daughters, 3 & 17 months, loved this book so much that they took it to daycare with them. The kids there just fell in love with it. The story is so cute, I like that the monkeys are doing a different thing on each page. My 3 year old has memorized it and can read most of it back to me. Other times she tries to act out what the monkeys are doing, on the floor though, and her little sister mimicks her.

5-0 out of 5 stars Silly monkeys for your silly monkey!
My two year old loves this book. Now that he can talk all the time, he likes books that he can pick out. He loves monkeys so this was a natural choice. The story goes along with the song about the monkeys and the nice repetitive ending gives the kids something they can say. "No more monkeys jumping on the bed." This has been a wonderful addition to our always growing library. I also highly recommend the Ten Little ladybugs book. They are similar and great for teaching numbers. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A real joy! A great addition to your child's library.
The dinosaurs in this book are friendly and cute. The pictures work well with the writing. The almost repetitive nature of this book make it easy for children to remember and read the book themselves.

My son loves this book. Even now whenever he sees something dinosaur, he'll say "Roar"!

There are so many books for children out there, it's hard for me to say one is a must have over the other. However, this is one that children will love. I found it well worth the money we spent on it.

4-0 out of 5 stars A fun book, good words and rhyming!
This is a great book for early reading and for fun time with the kids! My son loves it, while my daughter only likes it. It is fun to read with lots of sounds and a variety of "roars".

The graphics are colorful and nice with colorful dinosaurs that and smile a lot, and not scary - dinosaurs can easily go over the "top" and get scary for kids if not done right. The words are few, and go well together with quick rhyming and therefore good for early reading.

Most of all, it is fun! My son is now almost 4 and still pulls this book out and still has a lot of fun while we read it. Your results may vary, because I'm a good "roarer"!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Little Book
This is a small board book that features some nifty dinosaur illustrations accompanied by some simple rhymes. This book has quickly become my 2-year old son's favorite book, and he carries it around the house and always wants us to read it to him.

5-0 out of 5 stars Large vibrant illustrations
This book captivates with it's large vibrant illustrations of dinosaurs. My 17 month old loves looking at the pictures while I read it. In my opinion, it is the best illustrated board book I have ever seen.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book for pre-schoolers
I have two boys, 5 and 8, and they've both loved this book. The pictures are wonderful and the copy is fun to read together. My boys love to shout, "Dinosaur roar!" My youngest still reads it regularly. And he recently insisted on giving a copy to his 3-yr-old cousin for her birthay. Now, it's my neice's favorite book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Alphabet intrigue with a dotted "i" or two.
Bold and captivating, this alphabet concept book is a must have for the beginning reader. Not only is the story of the missing dot on the "i" appealing, but children can learn and enjoy the letter characters and detailed illustrations. This book would also be great for library story times and back to school themes. Another jewel from the ever-popular trove of the Wood family!

5-0 out of 5 stars A "Must Have" alphabet book
Charley's alphabet approaches the first day of school in time to "help a child learn the a-b-c's." However, along the way there are some mishaps and confusions that require sifting and sorting, searching, and trying again until words are formed and learned. This book is not only a wonderful alphabet book for children, it is also a view of the reading process for teachers. Alphabet Adventure is a delight of vibrant colors that cascade the pages of this book. The carefully written story invites inquiry and higher level thinking. The language and illustraions provide opportunities for not only enjoying the story, but for conversation between parent and child, teachers and children. I love alphabet books and was so delighted to find this book that I bought two. It is a "must have" book for Kindergarten and first grade teachers. Parents and grandparents need to share with young children as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exciting adventure for PreK and K ages
My children are 5 (boy) and 3 (girl) years old. They both loved this book. The first time we read it it kept their interest. Wonderful story and beautiful illustrations. When you get to the end of the book, you realize that the book is also an "I spy" or "Where's Waldo" type, looking for the book character, little i's, dot. The kids were so excited to read the book again and hunt for the hiding dot.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book!
We bought this for our 3 year old son and he loved it (and learned the upper and lowercase alphabet without any stress at all). Great, colorful illustrations too.

The smells of the great outdoors are captured in DK's small, sturdyboard book Scratch and Sniff Garden. "What can you smell in the garden? Is the scent of the rose sweet?" the book begins. When you scratch the lovely yellow rose, it does indeed smell quite realistically roselike. Kids can also experience the pungent smells of lavender, a log, a newly mowed lawn, and a bunch of mint. This is a great way to introduce your kids to the aromatic wonders of the plant kingdom. And, DK's Scratch and Sniff Food is fun, too. (Baby to preschool) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My son likes it (still)
I bought this book out of curiosity, and I am glad that I did, because my son liked it at first sight, and he still likes it even after a year. The book is really well made - sturdy, not heavy, safe, and of course smells nice. I was worried about the smell being a little bit toxic for a small child, but it did not bother my little one (he was 9 months old). He doesn;t particularly use the book for its smell, but he loves opening each page (I don't know why). The book is so well made that it must be fun for him to try to open and flip the pages. But I only bought this particular one, and I don't plan to buy any other ones... since my son doesn't seem interested in smelling the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Full of garden scents
DK scratch and sniff books won't disappoint you. They are by far the best scratch and sniff books around (not that there is a huge market of them). The scents last a long long time and the photos and text are very clear. My 3 year old follows along with the words and then tries to read the story himself after we are done.

5-0 out of 5 stars smells as good as rose
My 17-month-old found much to like immediately--each page was enthusiastically checked out. The scents are realistic and long-lasting, and the photos help tie everything together. A rose, mint, lavendar, cedar log, and freshly mown lawn put you out-of-doors no matter what time of year. Very stimulating.

5-0 out of 5 stars A lovely book to share with your young garden lover
Another quality series of books from DK. Good sturdy pages for little hands, wonderful clear and bright photography (no illustrations) and easy to read vocabularly. A wonderful learning tool for your baby and toddler. YOu can read to them, point things out and get to smell something as well. We've been enjoying this series of books for over two years and after lots of "scratching" we are still enjoying lots of "sniffing".

4-0 out of 5 stars Very nice
This is a great idea. The only disapointment is that it is too short (in content). The photos and scents are lovely and my daughter loves it. They could easily add more content that would allow for disscussion with one's child and more pictures. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Fashionistas start young, it seems.
To the bafflement of most of the knowledgeable children's literature world, "Ella Sarah Gets Dressed" garnered itself the prestigious and highly sought after Caldecott Honor Award in early 2004. It beat such potential contenders as Peter Sis's, "Tree of Life" and Gerald McDermott's, "Creation", both far worthier (in my humble opionion) winners. This isn't to say that the book is bad. As a charming tale about a stubborn toddler and her intense desire to wear the clothing of her own choice, the book is sweet and good-natured. Just the same, I was amazed by its reception.

As far as the plot goes, it's fairly basic. Ella Sarah plods around the house in her sheep pajamas, a floppity stuffed animal (with the nose and mouth of a martini glass) accompanying her wherever she goes. Right from the start, our heroine knows exactly what kind of clothing she would like to wear. Says she, "I want to wear my pink polka-dot pants, my dress with orange-and-green flowers, my purple-and-blue striped socks, my yellow shoes, and my red hat". Her mother complains that the outfit is too dressy. She suggests an alternative, which is met with Ella Sarah's reiterated desire. Her father says it's too fancy and she repeats her outfit (this time accompanied by a very realistic tantrumesque stamping on the floor). Her older sister says it's too silly and offers some clothes she's outgrown. Now the stuffed animal goes flying, as Ella Sarah proclaims her perfect outfit for the last time. Carefully she dresses herself in the colorful eclectic ensemble. When the doorbell rings we see that her friends are just as snazzy as our intrepid heroine. And with that, the four friends sit down to tea and donut holes. It is a colorful sight.

Cute plot all right, but it's the illustrations that really take your breath away. Using a kind of paper cutout style (the publication page is a little unclear about this, content to merely call the process, "a variety of printmaking techniques") everyone is presented with a series of rounded colorful forms. We never see the heads of Ella Sarah's parents or older sibling, which makes perfect sense. After all, we're on a toddler's level with this book. No surprise there. Especially enjoyable are the printed backgrounds that make up the wallpaper, bedspreads, and rugs in this story. As for the outfit Ella Sarah eventually dons, it's a pip. If there is an award winning moment in this book then it is the two-page spread of the protagonist doffing a bright red hat. The hat is not only colorful, but also tilted at a rakish angle. It's just a quick moment of kiddie noir before we're back to the usual story.

Kids reading this tale will be inspired by it. It has the capacity to not only send a message like, "Just be yourself" but to also encourage kids to learn how to dress themselves. And heck, any kid with a wardrobe like Ella Sarah and her friends will probably want to learn how to dress forthwith. As you can see, this is a darling tale. It's not the most inspired or original in the world, but it has a very particular knack and charm to it that's adorable. A tale that will entice not only the parents of the world, but their kids as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ella Sarah: What She Ought To Wear....
Ella Sarah is a young woman with a mind of her own... a very young woman with a mind of her own.

This brightly bold picture book reflects the personality of the protagonist. Everyone else gives her "their wisdom" and seems to forget Ella Sarah has a vision all her own.

At the end, Ella Sarah follows her heart and wears exactly what she wanted to all along.... and then her friends who know and cherish her exactly as she is arrive and.... well, its a loving, bright and bold ending as well.

Your children will love this, especially those who are bold, bright little ones who have their own strong fashion opinions. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Van Gogh's World of Color
My daughter loved looking at the pictures in this book, and asked for it every night for weeks. At one, the text was too advanced for her, but we would talk about the pictures--object names, colors, and other things she could relate to. I think when she's a little older, she'll still enjoy the pictures, but will also be able to appreciate the text. From my perspective, a "baby book" that lasts beyond babyhood is pretty rare. Her Baby Einstein books are among the few of her "baby board" books that we are keeping so she can enjoy them again when she's older.

3-0 out of 5 stars Have not made up my mind.
Personally I love this book. I am a huge Van Gogh fan so this book is perfect for me, however, it is supposed to be made for my son. He is not old enough to enjoy it yet, but I am not sure if he ever will

4-0 out of 5 stars Great alternative to standard baby books!
As a die-hard Van Gogh fan, I was thrilled when I found this book. I was concerned that my 6-month old wouldn't be interested, but she loved it! The tabs make it easy for her to turn the pages herself, and the bright colors attract her attention. Now, at 11 months, she focuses enough that I can read the colors to her and point out objects in the pictures. It is a wonderful alternative to standard, cartoony baby books. I wish they made similar books for other famous artists! (How about Picasso? Monet? Georgia O'Keefe?)
Unlike the reviewers who complained that the book is just like the video, I have focused on books rather than television. My daughter loves this book, and I'm sure she will someday be thrilled the first time she is able to recognize a painting as Van Gogh.

5-0 out of 5 stars Baby Einsteins Van Gogh
While this book may appear to be only for the little tykes don't let it fool you. Children as old as 40 have been known to read and like this book. What a great way to introduce Van Gogh in a simple, non-threatening way. Baby Einstein is a genius!

5-0 out of 5 stars great way to introduce art!
My kids love the Van Goat character from the Baby Van Gogh video, and were really happy to see him appear in this book. The book shows art by Van Gogh with suggestions of ideas on how to talk about the art with your baby, and is a good way to teach color. We love it! Totally unique! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
I cannot say enough about how good this series of books is. We have all the titles that are avaiable in Australia and they are the most well-read books in our Children's library.
They are the perfect-sized books for your little one and a great way to get them interested in learning to love books. The pages are strong and sturdy and will take any amount of page turning your little one can dish out.

The best thing about these books is the wonderful photography of each item - clearly labeled with it's name. As you read this book over and over to your child it won't be long before they are the ones pointing to the picture and telling you what it is.

I've read this series of books (over and over)to my children since they were about 6 months old. The eldest (now 4 and a half) still flicks through the books and has started to point things out and say the words to her little brother.

Highly recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for learning colors
This is one of the best color books I have seen. Each color gets two to four pages and a variety of real life items are shown for each color. For instance, red has two intro pages with a red fire engine on a mostly red background and then two pages that show a red car, a ladybug, a red t-shirt, red shoes, red strawberries, a red toothbrush and a red flower.

This book is good at allowing kids to see what the objects have in common which in this case is the color. Too many color books show only one object per color and when my son was younger I always wondered if he thought the word "red" referred to a strawberry or that the word "green" referred to a frog. This book makes it clear because he sees several different items described as green so he knows the word "green" refers to the color and not the object itself. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Museum ABC Metropolitan Museum of ART
I love this book. I read it to my 21 month old and he loves it! There is 4 differnt pictures on each letter and subject. Four different apples. We talk about how each one is different and how everyone sees an "apple" differently. "B" four boat shows for different kinds of boats. Definatly stimulating for baby.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great keepsake book
This book is wonderful gift for children ages 2 and up. Age 2 children (like my son) will enjoy counting the apples on the A page, for example. Some of the art includes complex scenes that school-age children may enjoy losing themselves in. The book helps teach children about art and the alphabet in an intelligent, non-cutesy fashion. Each letter has a two-page layout: one page is: "[Letter] is for [one word]" in large type, and the second page is four different artistic intrepretations of that word, like: an Egyptian mural, a Japanese woodblock print, a Renaissance canvas, and nineteenth century French painting. What a refreshing change from cartoonish, character-based children's books!

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect combination of art and alphabet
As a parent, teacher and art lover, I'm always looking for quality art books for children. This book delivers beautifully. Both simple and elegant, it reinforces letter sounds and gives a mini "I Spy" with four paintings for each letter, as the above review describes. It is even careful to give the short sound for vowels; for example, U is for "umbrella," not "unicorn." This is an important distinction for very young children who will most likely learn the short sound first in school. Meanwhile, your child's eye is becoming increasingly comfortable viewing different styles of visual art, as each letter's object is offered in varying styles. Highly recommended - a great gift, too. Let's give our kids the gift of art appreciation!

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is stunning!
My son's godmother gave it to him for his first birthday, and everyone at the party was entranced. It shows four paintings (or details from paintings) for each letter. For instance, H is for hair, and the pictures are of George Washington, a Japanese geisha, a French woman in the 18th century, and an Egyptian princess. This is a book you can look at again and again, and that adults won't tire of. A great, unusual ABC book. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A favorite of my two year old daughter
What a pleasure to have well written poetry that appeals to my 2 year old daughter! This book is a current favorite of hers, and we read it to her every night. The classic poems by AA Milne are as appealing to me as they are to her, and the illustrations by Ernest H Shepard make me look forward to my daughter growing up with all of AA Milne's books.

One disappointment - nowhere in the book does it point out (for the parent reading them over and over) that the poems contained in the book are often parts of larger poems written by A.A. Milne. You'll need to find a different book if you want the full poems of "Us Two", "Vespers", and "Nursery Chairs" for example.

Otherwise, a great book to add to your child's collection! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This will be my second copy!
My son (17.5 months) loves this book so much he's completely worn it out. We've taped it with clear packing tape several times, but by now even the tape that's taping the tape needs to be retaped, so it's time for a new copy. This is his stroller book--he *must* read this book while riding in the stroller, pointing at all the pictures and exclaiming "truck!" over and over again. Or turning to the fire truck and making a siren noise, or saying "pickle!" at the pickle car.

*I* love this book because it's just silly. It puts real-life vehicles (like fire engines) and puts them on the page next to vehicles that don't exist (like a peanut car).

This is such a must-have book, especially for toddlers obsessed with vehicles. If your child is one of them, then definitely get this book (and Byron Barton's _Trucks_, too).

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book!
My 1-year-old loves this book. She will sit and "read" it to herself. It is a great size for little hands to turn the pages. She also likes to teeth on it! We take it everywhere with us. We are already on our second copy.

5-0 out of 5 stars My son is mezmorized by the this book.
My 20 month old son has been mezmorized by this book for months now. Typically a book will hold his interest for 5 or 10 minutes at a time. My son can never seem to put this book down. It is ideal for long car trips, traffic jams or fussy days. There is a lot going on in the book so he never seems to get bored.

4-0 out of 5 stars My four month old loves it!!
I bought this book with the idea of saving it on the shelf until my little one was able to learn his abc's. Before I put in on the shelf I showed it to him and he was fascinated! He loved the pictures. The book is rather small in shape so I was therefore thrilled to see how easy it was for him to hold it all by himself. I now know that this will be a favorite of his for quite some time! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice book!
Very nice book. Nice colors, nice pictures.
Very handy to teach little ones about + Action words + shapes and Colors + counting + opposites + feelings.
But what I love the most is the diversity of little people. You can find an asian boy, a black mother, a girl with glasses... Nice game to play: "where is the grand-dad?"

Flaps look strong, but i still want to be with my baby right now so he doesn't tear them all! It's such a nice book...

5-0 out of 5 stars The BIG yellow bus that could
My 19 month old loves this book, and prefers it over all of his other books. The flaps have won him over. He loves pulling them up and down to see what "opposite" is on the other side. Because it's centered around school, he relates to it easily since he's in daycare. It's the first book he's started "reading" to himself and to his little buddy doll, and he's even started "counting" all the little people in the book. He wants to take the book everywhere we go! I'm going to get the other books in this series, so that he'll have new adventures to pursue once he's "finished" his fascinating bus ride.

5-0 out of 5 stars A book to grow with
My children love Little People and being able to buy books where they can recognise the characters is exciting for them. The lift-the-flaps get my children involved in the story while I read it to them. No matter how many times we read it, it's always a surprise to find out what is under the flap. A lovely book to share with your growing children and one that isn't too babyish when they start to read themselves.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great interactive book for all ages.
Great Gift. School bus books are popular with young children. All of my children (from 2 to 7) love this book. The two year old can play with the flaps, identify colors, shapes, opposites and count. The 4 year old can begin to read/memorize the word labels. The 7 year old can read the story. It's sturdy and creative. ... Read more

In the gorgeous, interactive ABC Disney: An Alphabet Pop-Up,Ais for Ariel,B is for Bambi, and C isfor Cinderella. And whobetter than Robert Sabuda to pull off this ambitious tribute to Disney animation? A veritable king in the world of pop-up books, he has never missed a new Disney animated feature film release. "Walt Disney films were magic to me and my siblings when we were kids," says Sabuda. "The films had stories, real stories that were completely believable. To the young artist growing inside of me they were visually lyrical and achingly beautiful." Creator of the holiday pop-up favorites A Christmas Alphabet, The Twelve Days of Christmas, and Cookie Count, Sabuda infuses life and motion into each beloved character with his ever elegant, truly astounding paper tricks. A sequence of colorful, lift-up squares, each marked with a letter from A to Z, cleverly conceals the spring-loaded Disney crew: Hercules flexes mightily when you lift the H square, Iago flaps his wings, Jiminy Cricket tips his hat cheerily, and Kaa the python slithers beneath the K. Disney fans young and old will revel in this magnificent tribute to the characters loved the world round and Sabuda fans will welcome another classic from the pop-up master.(Click tosee Ariel in action! 5-0 out of 5 stars This book is extraordinary for both children and adults
Adults will love this book both because it will remind them of the many characters with whom they grew up, and for the incredible science of Robert Sabuda's "paper engineering".Children will delight in the wonder of the "pop up". Not only do they love the recent and classic Disney characters, but thrill to know that they can identify the first letters of those characters' names!

5-0 out of 5 stars Another movable masterpiece from Mr. Sabuda!
The House of Mouse finally meets a master movable book artist and the results are more dazzling than the Electric Parade along Main Street -- or even more spectacular than a synchronized fireworks display in the Orlando, Florida skies. What could have been a run-of-the-mill volume if executed by someone else, Robert Sabuda's latest masterpiece celebrates over 60 years of movie magic with paper, paint and a passion for cutting and folding. Instead of simply replicating the characters and making them move, Mr. Sabuda infuses them with his unique style and sense of humor. (See Pinocchio get cross-eyed as he watches his own nose grow longer! Gepetto would have been proud.) Julie Taymor (surprisingly with the blessings of the formula-bound Disney folks) impressed the critics and the crowds with "The Lion King" on Broadway. Now, Mr. Sabuda likewise has proven to our pop-up publishing planet that creativity and commerce need not be exclusive of each other. Bravo, Robert! (But where is Sebastian? I can't wait for the sequel. A is for Aladdin, B is for Belle, C is for Chip...) "How big is baby ostrich? SOOO BIG!" Young children will love liftingthe flaps to find out just how big each animal can be. The text is simple: "Howbig is baby...? SOOO BIG!" Lift the flap to see giraffes, owls, and snakesstretching and leaping to their fullest extent to impress the world with theirsize. Excellent book! Great repetition and wonderful illustrations! My 22 month old son loves this book. We read it almost every day. He loves to look at the pictures but his favorite part is when I ask how big each animal is and then he answers by raising his arms over his head while I say SOOO Big!

3-0 out of 5 stars A bit too simplistic.
My 14 mo. old daughter is not too interested. I don't think this lift-the-flap is challenging enough. It's cute enough, but I don't think the illustrations are very interesting to her. I guess it depends on your child's likes/dislikes. She's really enjoyed Dora the Explorer's Christmas Book-which has much more "busy" illustrations and oddles of flaps to lift.

3-0 out of 5 stars Too baby-ish for my 14 mo. old.
She's not too excited about this one. Better for the under 12 mo. crowd. Pics very simple and boring. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great book, well loved at our house
My three year old loves this book. In addition to practicing our counting skills, we love to sit down with this book and make up our own story to go along with the pages. I ask him what the children are doing, what the people might be saying, and what is going on inside each building. There is lots of room for imagination. I never realized how much exploration can occur when the text is left out and you are allowed to interpret the pages for yourself. This is a treasure of a book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Truly an excellent book!
THis is a must have for young children. There is no text and only one number on each page. However, this book is a delight.

On page one exactly one of everything appears, on page two you two of more things and on page ten you see ten of many things. As the numbers grow higher the little town grows and the seasons change. THis enables you to discuss counting with your child as well as tell a story about the little town. You can also talk about seasons. What a wonderful multi use book. The illustrations are gentle and are not garish.

This is truly an excellent book. Well worth the money.

5-0 out of 5 stars gentle, artistic introduction to early mathematical concepts
Mitsumasa Anno creates graceful children's picture books that are more evocative than prose and more elegant than poetry. In this counting book, the author/illustrator allows the concepts of number, sets and arithmetic progression to unfold in pages, numbered one to twelve, that also correspond to the first through twelfth month.

Seasons evolve as a little town grows, children play, trees appear, animals pass through, and the clock marks the hours.

Like Anno's other books, this little gem can be enjoyed year after year as children (and adults) continue to find more complex concepts as their cognitive understanding matures.

4-0 out of 5 stars counting, and more.
Anno's _Counting Book_'s first page features a barren hillside, with a frozen river snaking up the hill. Nothing to count here (unless your child points out the river, or the hill!). This is page zero.

On page 1, there is exactly one of several different items-- a bridge, a sun, a building, a snowman, a skier, and more. On page two, there are two of each item presented-- two leafless trees, two trucks, two men, a steeple clock set at 2 o'clock, two rabbits. You get the idea.

There are no words on the pages-- this makes the book an ideal text for teaching the names of these items, too. My child asks "What's that?" when he doesn't know what an item is. Then he repeats the name after me.

Some features of a distant hillside are special (think individual tiny flowers, or butterflies) can not be seen by a distant viewer, but Anno has adjusted for this in his book. Items which are small in real life, such as flowers and butterflies, are presented out of scale in this book, so that the reader can appreciate them along with the other items, such as buildings and people.

The pages 1 through 12 represent the 12 months of the year in a continental climate in the Northern Hemisphere, so 1, 2 and 12 are wintry, 3, 4, and 5 represent springtime, and so forth.

Anno's book is nicely laid out and designed. The pictures are a bit old fashioned, but it is well thought out and should appeal to children for several years, as the pages with higher numbers are more cluttered and therefore more difficult. They also offer more opportunity for creating one's own story as the reader sees such actions as marriages, fencebuilding, caroling, and children playing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lovely Book
I picked this book up at the library for my 2 year old who is quite speech delayed. I had never seen it before and as we turned the pages we were thrilled at the marvelous pictures. She practiced animal soundss and found plenty of new words to try along with the counting. Wonderful. When my 4 year old read it with me she noticed a mistake. I don't know if Anno did it on purpose but my daughter noticed it immediately. Here's a hint. On one of the pages the number of animals is incorrect. Have fun!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The mystery and magic of words
I am a 50+ year-old collector of children's books, and this one is now at the top of my list of favorites -- I would nominate it for every book award! Anyone who has been read aloud to, or has enjoyed reading to someone else, will appreciate the bond between the woman and the bear she reads to at her cabin one summer. The bear, like a young child who cannot understand all the words read to him, still feels their magic and warmth, and is no less involved in the woman's stories than a more sophisticated reader who can analyse narrative point-of-view or the logical intricacies of plot structure. The letter from the woman's parents which the bear finds at the beginning of the story lets the reader know that this woman has enjoyed this special cabin since childhood, and that she apparently returns here every summer. For the bear, this paper, with its mysterious marks on it, becomes a special and almost sacred object. Similarly, the woman's books, which she leaves behind for the bear in the fall, become treasures which he delicately takes to his cave and which fill his winter dreams with warmth until the woman will return to read to him again. In an almost mythic way, this story communicates what is most essential about reading -- the experience of being swept away by the mysterious power of the spoken word, and treasuring the moments when we shared this experience with someone else.
I love the story of this book, but I really was most drawn to it by the illustrations which are superlative in every way -- especially the rendering of this sweet. perplexed, and often astonished bear. I now am ordering another copy for a friend, who is also over 50 and shares my love of books and cabins in pine forests.

5-0 out of 5 stars A book that speaks to the magic of reading to a child
This tender and charming story brought tears to my eyes as I read it in the bookstore. The illustrations are lush and make you want to take the bear (of the title) home with you. What I like best about this book is the focus on the relationship between the bear and the woman who reads to him. Her love for him is the foundation for his emotional development--I can't wait to read it to my son.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Book
I read this book to the kids I was babysitting and I just LOVED it! It has beautiful illustrations as well as a beautiful storyline! It's a very touching story, and I know it would have been my favourite book when I was younger if it had been read to me.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Story for Bear by Dennis Haseley
I loved this book! My children loved this book! It is a book that can be read over and over again and enjoyed everytime that it is read. The first time that I read it I had tears in my eyes by the time I finished it. Both the story and the illustrations are beautiful. It makes you wish that you had a cabin in the woods and a bear to read to. It would be a magical day if indeed a story like this could actually be reality.

5-0 out of 5 stars For 5 and up
I personally liked this book. It really lets children interact with the storyline, which is to get Dora safely to the library so she can return her books. Dora asks the reader for help in finding articles in her backpack that will help her accomplish this goal.

Overall, this book was a little too advanced for my soon-to-be three year-old cousin. Be sure to buy this book for a child who's older, because it's not a hardcover book (a little one will rip this easily) and it might be a little difficult for a toddler to interact with the story.
